Eastland shakes off rust with runaway area win.
By Evan Ren.
COLORADO CITY--"After a three-week layoff that saw them through a late open date and a first-round bye in the playoffs, the Eastland Mavericks showed all the signs of ring rust in Thursday's Class 2A area round game with Littlefield.
But despite several bad snaps, penalties and assorted miscues, the Mavericks overcame it all with more than 700 yards in total offense in a 51-22 rout at Wolf Stadium.
Trent Brittain threw for 381 yards and rushed for 191 more to lead to lead Eastland (11-0), which advances to face the winner of Wall (10-0) and Breckenridge (7-4) in the Region I semifinal.
Littlefield, which got 111 yards rushing from Damadrick Moore, closed its season at 8-4.
"As much as anything else, we just finally settled in tonight," said Eastland coach Brian Hulett of a shaky first half that saw the Mavericks take a 16-14 lead into the locker room. "If it was the layoff, I don't know ... but we finally settled in and played football."
By "settling in" the Mavs exploded for 35 second-half points, including four-straight touchdowns between the 10:57 mark of the third quarter and the 8:58 mark of the fourth to put the game away.
Brittain was at his most effective after the break, scoring on a 72-yard run on Eastland's first possession in the third quarter. He later added an 80-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, along with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Justin Schrader emerged in the second half as well, scoring on a 13-yard touchdown run with 6:56 left in the third quarter, and setting up a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Brandon Allen by racing 66 yards to the Littlefield 2.
"We just couldn't stay with them," Littlefield coach Bryan Huseman said. "We couldn't run with them — their speed killed us.
"We let them get a lot of big plays and got frustrated."
Littlefield managed just one score in the second half — a 3-yard touchdown run by Matthew Johnson and subsequent 2-point conversion run by Patric Silvas that left the Wildcats trailing by three scores with 8:11 to play.
"We were moving the ball in the first half, but we were just having stupid turnovers and penalties," Brittain said. "But we tried to come out in the second half and clean it up and do what we know how to do."
