Mavericks won't get their rings - yet.
Chris Moore, Dallas Basketball Examiner.
"Mark Cuban acquiesced, and his Mavericks players will get their jewelry. Just not on Opening Day.
The Dallas Mavericks owner says the championship rings won't be ready in time for the Mavs' first game on Christmas Day, when they will raise a banner for the 2011 NBA championship.
Cuban says he wanted to get feedback from Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and Jason Kidd on the rings' appearance. The league forbade the owners from talking to the players during the lockout. Cuban still can't talk to them until the new labor agreement is ratified; the players are scheduled to vote on it Thursday.
Cuban, however, is putting the best positive spin possible on the delay, saying that fans who can't make it to the first game for the banner ceremony will now have a second chance to watch a commemoration.
At least the players know they'll eventually get the rings; they weren't so sure for a brief time.
Cuban caused a stir in an interview following the Mavs' win over the Miami Heat in the Finals when he said he might not get rings, calling them passé and saying the time for something new might be right. Players and coaches quickly approached him later, asking him to stick with the tradition most pro teams have done since the 1927 New York Yankees."

It is obvious that Cuban mailed it in this year and he was not focused on repeating. The loss of Tyson Chandler created a huge hole on the team. Chandler was a presence inside and Odom is not going to compensate for the leadership and grittiness of Chandler.
The Mavericks fans will be smart not to judge Odom too early. Odom is a second half and playoff player. He paces himself early in the season and in the past he has been derided in the press for lackadaisical play.
The season is young and although Odom is scoring in the single digits every game, he will be a force later in the NBA season. The

3-pointer: Shawn Marion for all-NBA defense?
Comments By Jeff Caplan.
LOS ANGELES--"Following Monday night's 73-70 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban took to his Twitter account.
No, not to rip the game's referees. Not to promote his e-book to commissioner David Stern. Cuban actually doesn't make many statements regarding his team or his players on Twitter, but he did on this night:
"I'm just trying to make it hard on him and make sure I kept a hand in his face," Marion said."Tough loss. Will someone tell me why @matrix31 (Shawn Marion) is not perennial all-NBA defense 1st team? He doesn't get respect he has earned"
A little later, Marion replied to Cuban on his Twitter account: "Thanks, man."
Lost in the Mavericks' tough loss to the Lakers was the job that Shawn Marion did defending Kobe Bryant. Marion held Bryant to 14 points on 7-of-22 shooting.
Marion certainly plays Bryant as tough as anyone in the league. Marion put the clamps on Bryant in the second-round playoff sweep and in the first meeting since the sweep, Marion did it again. Bryant came into Monday's game with four consecutive 40-point games -- while shooting better than 50 percent in that stretch -- and leading the league in scoring at 32 points a game.
Marion was in his jersey all night long. Bryant missed his first shot and didn't score his first bucket until the 4:41 mark of the second quarter. Marion actually got the assist. The Mavs forward grabbed one of his six offensive rebounds, but he couldn't hold back a pass back out top that went right to Bryant for an easy dunk.
That's all that came easy. Bryant finished with 14 points on 7-of-22 shooting.
"I'm just trying to make it hard on him and make sure I kept a hand in his face," Marion said. "I try to take away easy buckets."
Three more thoughts after a weird Lakers loss and before playing a new Clippers team:
1. Vince Carter was in pain: The veteran wing couldn't pressure on his left foot after he sprained it on the final play of Monday's 73-70 loss at the Lakers. That Carter was subbed in for Shawn Marion with 3.1 seconds to go and was given the opportunity to tie the game shows the confidence that coach Rick Carlisle has in him. Carter has been a valuable player off the bench and if he's sidelined for any period of time -- and he was on crutches -- then Rodrigue Beaubois is going to have to prove he can bring consistent play at both ends on a nightly basis.
2. Dirk's shrinking average: The Mavs' perennial MVP scored 21 points Monday night on 8-of-17 shooting, which wasn't bad considering he missed his first six shots. Nowitzki is now averaging just 17.9 points a game, his lowest since he averaged 17.5 points in the 1999-2000 season. Nowitzki went seven games without scoring more than 20 points, going back to Jan. 2.
3. Jason Kidd's shrinking shooting percentage: Monday was not a good night for the old point guard in his second game back from a bad back that kept him out of four in a row -- although coach Rick Carlisle said Kidd was ready to go Friday night, only to be held out for precautionary reasons on the first night of a back-to-back. But, back to Monday's loss at L.A., Kidd was 1-of-9 from the floor to drop him to 30.0 percent shooting from the floor. He missed all eight of his 3-point attempts and is now shooting just 30.2 percent from beyond the arc."

Five things to take from Lakers' 73-70 victory over Dallas.
"1. The Lakers' 73-70 victory Monday over the Dallas Mavericks featured strong play from Derek Fisher in the fourth quarter. Kobe Bryant held the ball at the top of the key and appeared ready to shoot the potential game-winner. But then he drew a double team from Shawn Marion and Jason Terry, prompting Bryant to throw a jump pass to Fisher.
Fisher drained the three, giving the Lakers a 73-70 lead with 3.1 seconds remaining. It capped off a huge fourth quarter for Fisher, who scored nine of his season-high 14 points on five-of-nine shooting. He also made two key steals and closed Lamar Odom's baseline shot late in the game. Say what you will about Fisher's declining skills. I've noticed it too. But the dude still knows how to win.
2. This game was ugly. It served as the perfect argument on why compacting a 66-game schedule through four months proves to be a bad idea. It also showed that the Lakers hardly remain comfortable on offense. And the result: the Lakers scored seven third-quarter points mixed in with a whole lot of sloppy basketball.
Still, it's comforting that the Lakers could win such a horrific game by elevating their defense. Pau Gasol made up for a poor offensive night (three of 11 clip) by limiting premier scorer Dirk Nowitzki only to 21 points on eight-for-21 shooting. Andrew Bynum denied Brendan Haywood any inside presence with one point on 0-for-three shooting. And for once, the Lakers hardly had to worry about the opposing team's backcourt with 39-year-old Jason Kidd going one for nine from the field. Credit in Fisher's two-late game steals.
Clearly, Lakers Coach Mike Brown's hope for a stronger execution will take a while. But it can rely on a strong defense no matter how poor the performance.
3. Odom received a nice standing ovation. Odom refused to guess what the fan reception would entail on his first game back at Staples Center since the Lakers traded him to the Mavericks.
"You should never assume or expect," Odom said before the game. "That will be cocky. I'm not cocky."
The moment he stepped at the scorer's table with 7:32 remaining in the first quarter, however, Odom received a loud standing ovation from the fans at Staples Center. Fisher immediately hugged him before checking in. Matt Barnes delayed walking to the foul line to shoot his free throws to prolong the Odom cheers. And Odom, himself, appeared to soak in the warm reception. On the next timeout, the Lakers featured a 45-second video montage showcasing numerous highlights and community appearances, ending with the message: "THANKS for the memories, LAMAR."
4. Bynum served as the main highlight. The Lakers aren't yet ready to have the balanced offense that will Brown envisions. But Bynum shows he's making the right steps. He fought better through double teams en route to 17 points on eight-of-13 shooting and 15 rebounds. He made Haywood a non-factor. And he was a part of numerous kick-outs and lobs that temporarily jump-started the Lakers' poor play. Pretty impressive Bynum's made such adjustments so quickly.
5. The Lakers' effort remains there. Forgive Bryant's 14 points on seven-of-22 shooting. It's unfair to expect him to score 40 points every night. But I wouldn't read the Lakers' ability to grind out a win against Dallas as evidence they can overcome such horrific offensive stretches.
Still, you can't fault the Lakers' work ethic. Josh McRoberts has provided endless energy. No matter how sloppy it was, there proved to be a real intent on trying to make the offense work. And even if it didn't exactly show up in their shooting percentage, Fisher's elevated play, Bynum's post presence and Gasol's defense helped the Lakers overcome a night that featured less of Bryant scoring."

Jason Kidd comes out of first game back from back injury with no complications.
By Eddie Sefko.SportsDayDFW sports.
"Jason Kidd came out of his first game back from a back injury with no complications, coach Rick Carlisle said.
It was an impressive recovery by the point guard, who was barely able to get around on Monday in Washington at the White House but was playing on Saturday against the Sacramento Kings.
"Those chairs in the White House aren't the most comfortable," Carlisle said. "We did the right thing by sitting him. He wanted to go to the White House. There was no way he was going to miss that. And then he was able to get back and get in the therapy pool and do therapy and by the time we got back, he was ready to play on Friday, but [Mavericks trainer Casey Smith] felt that Saturday would be better. And I thought he played great."

Finally! Mavericks plan to hand out championship rings in Jan. 25 ceremony.
By EDDIE SEFKO.
BySportsDayDFW sports..Staff Writer.
LOS ANGELES--"Every Maverick who was on the championship roster will get his ring in Dallas this season -- including Peja Stojakovic, assuming the Mavericks can work out travel arrangements for the recently retired gunslinger, owner Mark Cuban said Monday.
The Mavericks will fly in the midseason acquisition who played a key role in the title run for the ring ceremony on Jan. 25 against Minnesota at American Airlines Center.
J.J. Barea, now with the Timberwolves, will be on hand as a visitor. Stojakovic, who has retired but still probably could help a number of teams if he so desired this season, will be flown in from New Orleans, where his family lives.
In addition, every other departed member of the championship squad will get his ring at AAC. New Jersey (DeShawn Stevenson), New York (Tyson Chandler), Denver (Corey Brewer) and the LA Clippers (Caron Butler) all will visit Dallas later in the season for regularly scheduled games.
Cuban, by the way, said before Monday's game with the
"Ridiculous," he said.
But no doubt, worth it."
