NBA PM: NBA Lockout A Mixed Blessing?
By Bill Ingram.
Senior NBA Editor.

"Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle calls the 82-game NBA season a “war of attrition,” and for most teams it turns out to be just that. First and foremost, teams have to deal with the inevitable injuries that come with the long season, and it takes more than a little bit of luck to arrive at postseason time with you main pieces in place. Just ask last year’s San Antonio Spurs, who owned the West’s best record all season only to have last-minute injuries contribute heavily to their first round bounce.

No one is happy that the NBA is losing weeks of games from the 2011-12 season as the lockout rages on, but there are a couple of groups of players who could really benefit from what is likely to be a significantly shorter season.

The most obvious group is the older veterans, and a recent HOOPSWORLD poll showed that the majority of NBA fans believe that older teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs could benefit the most from a shortened season. Certainly players like Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Jason Kidd would be fresher come playoff time if they hadn’t had to endure the 82-game grind. Drop 15 or 20 games off that total and it’s very possible that Bryant or Duncan could find themselves one more ring before retirement.

The other, less obvious group who could stand to benefit from a shorter season is the incoming freshman class. Losing summer league and a proper training camp certainly hurts, but knocking off a few weeks could help them avoid the dreaded “rookie wall,” which generally hits right around the time the college season would be over. A later start gives the rookies a fighting chance to sustain a level of consistency right up to the end of the season.

The final group that stands to gain from an extended offseason are the players who had surgery over the summer. Rudy Gay has had plenty of time to rehab his shoulder, for example. Caron Butler can now say he’s 100% as he enters a very brief free agency period. Brandon Roy and Greg Oden have had more time to address their injuries, and the list goes on. PLayers who were even the least bit banged up at the end of last season definitely benefit from extra time to work out those injuries. (See also: Matt Barnes, below)

To be clear, I am not in any way saying the NBA lockout is a good thing. It’s horribly bad for the game and it is massively damaging to the communities that support the teams. Jobs have been lost, city revenues have been lost, and there’s a long line of dominoes that have fallen that will take months if not years for the NBA to rebuild.

However, since the lockout is a reality, we can also analyze the potential benefits as a way of making lemonade out of a big batch of lemons. There aren’t many, but the three groups of NBA players discussed above can potentially enjoy a little lemonade as a salve to the mess that has already cost us a month of NBA games."

Stern cancels all NBA games in November; Mavs will lose 9 home games.
Associated Press
NEW YORK—"The NBA will play a shortened season — if it plays at all — after negotiations to end the lockout again stalled over how to divide the league’s revenue.

Commissioner David Stern canceled all November games on Friday, the 120th day of the lockout.

“It’s not practical, possible or prudent to have a full season now,” said Stern, who previously canceled the first two weeks of the season.

And he repeated his warnings that the offers players have rejected might now get even harsher as the league tries to make up the millions of dollars that will be lost.

“We’re going to have to recalculate how bad the damage is,” Stern said. “The next offer will reflect the extraordinary losses that are piling up now.”

Just a day earlier, Stern had said he would consider it a failure if the sides didn’t reach a deal in the next few days and vowed they would take “one heck of a shot” to get it done.

Although they’ve narrowed the issues between them, the division of revenues remains a huge obstacle.

Owners are insistent on a 50-50 split, while players last formally proposed they get 52.5 percent, leaving them about $100 million apart annually. Players were guaranteed 57 percent in the previous labor agreement.

“Derek [Fisher] and I made it clear that we could not take the 50-50 deal to our membership. Not with all the concessions that we granted,” union executive director Billy Hunter said. “We said we got to have some dollars.”

Instead, they’ll now be out roughly $350 million, the losses Hunter previously projected for each month the players were locked out. He hoped a full season could be played if a deal were made this weekend, but Stern emphatically ruled out any hope of that now.

“These are not punitive announcements; these are calendar-generated announcements,” Stern said.

No further talks have been scheduled.

After two days of making progress on salary cap issues, the sides brought the revenue split back into the discussion Friday and promptly got stuck on both issues.

Stern said the NBA owners were “willing” to go to 50 percent. But he said Hunter was unwilling to “go a penny below 52,” that he had been getting many calls from agents and then closed up his book and walked out of the room.

Hunter said the league initially moved its target down to 47 percent during Friday’s six-hour session, then returned to its previous proposal of 50 percent of revenues.

“We made a lot of concessions, but unfortunately, at this time, it’s not enough, and we’re not prepared or unable at this time to move any further,” Hunter said.

Union president Fisher said it was difficult to say why talks broke down, or when they would start up again.

Fisher said there were still too many system restrictions in the owners’ proposal. Players want to keep a system similar to the old one and fear that owners’ ideas would limit player movement.

The old cap system allowed teams to exceed it through the use of a number of exceptions, many of which the league wants to tweak or even eliminate. Hunter has called a hard cap a “blood issue” to players, and though the league has backed off its initial proposal calling for one, players think the changes owners want would work like one.

“We don’t want a hard cap any kind of way, either an obvious hard cap or a hard cap that may not be as obvious to most people but we know it works like a hard cap,” Hunter said. “And so you get there, and then all of a sudden they say, ‘Well, we also have to have our number.’ And you say, ‘Well wait a minute, you’re not negotiating in good faith.’”

Mavericks Tentatively Scheduled To Open Season Against Heat.
by JP Starkey •

"Well, the NBA is back, but there will be some damage control work to do by the league to reel in all the fans it might have lost because of the extended lockout, which, if you haven't noticed, shortened the 2011-12 season. As the schedule currently stands, the NBA will kickoff on Christmas day, with a trio of enticing games: Knicks/Celtics, Bulls/Lakers, and of course, Heat/Mavericks.

If there's a silver lining to the NBA lockout for Mavericks fans, it's this: the Mavericks will open the season at home on Christmas day, receive their championship rings and raise their banner... with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh all there in person to witness the festivities."

...man talk 'bout SWEET 2 have the HEAT watch!!!

MAVERICKS ANNOUNCE 2011-12 SEASON SCHEDULE.

DALLAS – "The defending World Champion Dallas Mavericks announced their 2011-12 season schedule today, which includes 10 games on ESPN, 10 on TNT, seven on NBATV, three on ABC and eight on ESPN Radio.

Dallas begins its 32nd season on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at home as they take on the Chicago Bulls on TNT, who finished with the league’s best record (62-20) a year ago. It also marks the 11th season at American Airlines Center.

The Mavericks’ 10 ESPN telecasts include Dec. 7 at Chicago, Dec. 9 vs. L.A. Clippers, Jan. 11 at Boston, Jan. 18 at L.A. Clippers, Feb. 1 vs. Oklahoma City, Feb. 15 vs. Denver, Mar. 21 vs. L.A. Lakers, Mar. 30 at Orlando, Apr. 4 vs. Memphis and Apr. 13 at Portland.

TNT features the Mavericks 10 times. Aside from the home opener on Nov. 1, Dallas will play on TNT vs. L.A. Lakers (Dec. 15), at Oklahoma City (Dec. 29), at L.A. Lakers (Jan. 16), at Utah (Jan. 19), vs. Boston (Feb. 20), at Phoenix (Mar. 8), at Denver (Mar. 19), at Miami (Mar. 29) and at Golden State (Apr. 12).

Dallas also has seven televised games on NBATV. They are Nov. 5 vs. Oklahoma City, Dec. 12 vs. Denver, Jan. 21 at New Orleans, Jan. 29 vs. San Antonio, Feb. 11 vs. Portland, Mar. 5 at Oklahoma City and Mar. 10 at Golden State.

The three games on ABC are vs. Miami (Dec. 25), at New York (Feb. 19) and at L.A. Lakers (Apr. 15).

ESPN Radio broadcasts eight games this season. They are vs. Chicago (Nov. 1), vs. L.A. Lakers (Dec. 15), vs. Miami (Dec. 25), at Utah (Jan. 19), at New York (Feb. 19), vs. L.A. Lakers (Mar. 21), at Miami (Mar. 29) and at L.A. Lakers (Apr. 15).

The remaining portion of the Mavericks’ local television schedule for games on Fox Sports Southwest and HDNet will be released at a later date. All games can be heard on ESPN 103.3 FM and on KFLC (1270 AM) in Spanish.

After tipping-off the season at home vs. Chicago, Dallas splits its November almost evenly at home (8 more home games) and on the road (7 total). Games in that month include Western Conference foes San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Phoenix and Portland. The 16 total games tie a season-high (also March).

The schedule slows down for the team in December and January as they play a total of 13 games in each. The highlight of December is a re-match of the 2011 NBA Finals as Miami heads to Dallas on Christmas Day. The Mavericks also face the L.A. Lakers for the first time all season on Dec. 15. In January, the team tackles its first of three four-game road trips traveling to play the Lakers, Clippers, Jazz and Hornets from Jan. 16-21.

In February, the team plays five of its seven road games out East, including a four-game stretch to Minnesota, Cleveland, Indiana and Detroit from Feb. 3-8.

The Mavericks have 19 back-to-backs this season similar to the 20 they had in 2010-11. In total, four of them begin at home and conclude on the road, 10 are on the road and five are road-home. The team’s last four-game trip features the last two back-to-backs of the season as they play in Golden State and Portland (Apr. 12-13) and at L.A. Lakers and Utah (Apr. 15-16)."

The Tyson Chandler sweepstakes begins.
Comments By Jeff Caplan.

"We're about to find out just how coveted Tyson Chandler is around the NBA. Teams can talk to player-agents as of 8 a.m. and you can bet that Chandler's agent Jeff Schwartz will be a busy, busy man.

We know the Dallas Mavericks will make a hard run at re-signing the 7-foot-1 center who played such an integral role in the franchise finally capturing its first championship. So, which teams are legitimate threats to take him away?

The Mavs go in with the clear edge to re-sign the big man. And, Chandler might not find a better spot than Dallas to contend for a title this season. Still, he'll have options and big bucks waiting with every suitor. Here's a quick take on five teams, in no particular order, that could make a hard charge:

Minnesota Timberwolves
Minnesota might seem like the NBA's Siberia and, well, it's hard to argue that isn't. But, is that about to change? Don Nelson thinks so. That's why the Hall of Fame coach lobbied hard for that job after the T'Wolves called it curtains for Kurt Rambis. Veteran mastermind Rick Adelman has the gig and don't you know he'd -- well -- love a frontcourt of Chandler and double-double machine Kevin Love? Spanish phenom Ricky Rubio will finally make his NBA debut, joining a roster that can at least be described as intriguing with Michael Beasley, Anthony Randolph and Anthony Tolliver. This move would take a real leap of faith on Chandler's part, but Minnesota hasn't had an outlook this bright since Kevin Garnett and Latrell Sprewell had a firm grip on the franchise.

Sacramento Kings
The Kings could be just a season away from moving to Anaheim. Chandler is more of a San Bernardino County guy than Orange County, but nevertheless he could potentially play very close to home and family. The Kings are nowhere close to contending, but laid-back coach Paul Westphal, a Southern California guy himself, has some interesting, young talent with Tyreke Evans, DeMarcus Cousins, J.J. Hickson and rookies Isaiah Thomas and "The Jimmer" (Jimmer Fredette). Center Samuel Dalembert is a free agent and could return with the right deal. The Kings are substantially below the salary cap and will have to spend some dough just to get to the cap minimum. Adelman, the T'Wolves coach proved that small-market Sacramento can contend.

Philadelphia 76ers
This is a team that might be ready to pop with a nice mix of young talent and proven veterans returning for Doug Collins' second season. Coming off a playoff appearance and under new ownership, the goals are heightened. Six players averaged in double-digits last season and that doesn't include Evan Turner. The missing ingredient here is an athletic, rebounding center. The 76ers could use the amnesty provision to jettison Andres Nocioni, which would allow Philly to make a legitimate offer for Chandler. After the aging Boston Celtics, the Atlantic Division is wide open.

New Jersey Nets
Superman, aka Dwight Howard, is the man the Nets want to pair with Deron Williams and ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Chad Ford report that they'r serious about trading for Howard and soon. The Nets still plan to hit free agency hard and Denver's Nene and Chandler are at the top of the list. Brook Lopez has proven he can score, but he doesn't rebound like a 7-footer should. The Nets have cap space and will have more if they amnesty Travis Outlaw. Avery Johnson's team is hardly loaded, but with Williams at the helm and a move to Brooklyn coming, Russian billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov will do whatever it takes to buy a winner and steal the spotlight from Manhattan.

Houston Rockets
The Yao Ming dynasty is over in H-town. The Rockets know life in the Southwest Division isn't easy and subtracting an integral player from the defending champs while helping themselves in the process would be a coup for Rockets GM Daryl Morey. Houston is positioned to make a move for Chandler and add him to a roster that includes Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Kyle Lowry and young forward Patrick Patterson. At times last season the Rockets looked like a 6-foot-and-under team in comparison to the competition and Chandler's rebounding and defense would quickly take care of that little issue."

http://espn.go.com/b... ... to-re-sign
J.J. Barea is important piece to re-sign.
Comments By Jeff Caplan.

"With so much free-agent talk revolving around the Dallas Mavericks' must, as in must re-sign Tyson Chandler, there's no time to lose focus on the overall importance of the young man named J.J. Barea.

The 2011 playoffs served as a breakout party for the diminutive Puerto Rican, particularly so in the second round as he carved up the Los Angeles Lakers' stationary defense before nearly being chopped in half by an Andrew Bynum body blow in the final moments of the surprising sweep. Sure, the nation found out about J.J. at that point, but Mavs coach Rick Carlisle will tell you that Barea's been integral for three years now.

Barea is perfectly suited for the Mavs' flow offense and halfcourt pick-and-roll game. Until Rodrigue Beaubois shows signs of a return to his rookie form, Barea is the lone guard on the team capable of consistently breaking down a defense, driving and scoring or dishing, which he has become much more proficient. Carlisle successfully used Barea, barely 5-foot-10, if that, as the starting two-guard for goodness sake in the final three games of the NBA Finals.

His heart and effort are unquestioned and his defense is passable enough in a team setting and is accentuated by his ability to agitate opponents into launching forearms into his chest.

Barea's return will be key in aiding Carlisle to reduce Jason Kidd's minutes. He averaged 33.2 minutes in 80 games last season. In a compressed, 66-game schedule, it will be even more important to keep the 38-year-old as fresh as possible late in the season. Point-guard replacements aren't plentiful on the free-agent market and certainly no one can come in with the Barea's knowledge and familiarity of the system, important will little time to prepare for the season.

He earned $1.8 million last season and Barea has indicated he will accept a homecourt discount. He's also said that the promise of a starting job will not solely lure him somewhere else. How high will offers go? Would a team throw a full, $5 million mid-level exception at him? That would seem a stretch.

The teams most mentioned as Barea hunters in the aftermath of the NBA Finals were the freshly wounded Miami Heat and Lakers. The Heat will want to use their full MLE on a center. The Lakers still have backup Steve Blake under contract for three seasons at $12 million and are significantly over the luxury tax threshold.

Barea has played himself into a profitable position. He will have suitors. He wants to stay and the Mavs want him back. That should work out a suitable deal for both."

Rudy Fernandez expected in camp and happy.
Comments By Jeff Caplan.

"Contrary to a report out of Spain on Monday, Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Rudy Fernandez will be in Dallas next week, not to ask for a buyout and return to Madrid, as the report suggests, but to enthusiastically begin training camp with his new teammates.

The Spanish media outlet is only stirring the drama pot, a person with knowledge of Fernandez's thinking said Tuesday, calling the report, "gossip." Fernandez has been in and out of the news throughout the offseason with overseas reports speculating that he would prefer to return to Spain full-time immediately and not fulfill the final year on his NBA contract.

"It's all garbage," the source said. "He's coming back as soon as the [deal] is ratified. He is excited to play for Dallas."

Fernandez did sign a long-term contract with Real Madrid this summer that will allow him to resume his career there after this NBA season if he chooses. Fernandez has been playing for the team during the lockout. A minor knee injury sustained on Sunday will have him sidelined approximately a week. Fernandez is contractually obligated to return to the NBA once the lockout is lifted.

After this season, Fernandez will be a restricted free agent. He can entertain contract offers from the Mavs and other NBA teams or decide to return to his home country and play for Real Madrid under a contract that will make him one of the league's richest players in history.

The lockout remains in force until the tentatively agreed upon labor deal is ratified by both sides so Mavs management cannot comment on its players. Privately, they are confident that Fernandez is excited to report to training camp and will do so with the intention of fulfilling the length of his contract.

Asked if Fernandez could seek a buyout during the season if he becomes unhappy with his role, the source said it is impossible to speculate, but that Fernandez is committed to the Mavs for this season. Dallas is crowded at shooting guard, but the 6-foot-6 Fernandez, who will enter his fourth season in the league after spending three seasons with Portland, could emerge as the starter.

In late September, a source said that Fernandez planned to use this season as a "test period" to better determine his plan for next season.

"He has to figure out if he likes it [in Spain] and he has to see if he likes the Mavs,” the source said then."

Free agency officially hits starting grid.
Comments By Jeff Caplan.
"Rest assured that at 8 a.m. sharp Donnie Nelson will be placing a call to Jeff Schwartz, agent for unrestricted free agent center Tyson Chandler.
The NBA's free agency period is officially on the starting grid. The NBA has eased lockout restrictions and starting Wednesday morning teams can contact agents and begin contract talks. Top priority for the Dallas Mavericks' president of basketball operations is making sure that the 7-foot-1 Chandler is in a Mavs uniform on Christmas Day.
While talks can take place, no agreements, oral or written, can be made.
Chandler is considered one of the top three free agents along with Denver Nuggets center Nene and New Orleans Hornets power forward David West.
The Mavs have five other free agents: J.J. Barea, Caron Butler DeShawn Stevenson, Brian Cardinal and Peja Stojakovic.
Players can return to their teams' practice facilities on Thursday. They will be allowed to workout under the supervision of team strength and conditioning coaches, but the coaching staff and front office personnel will still not be allowed to be present.
The labor deal that was tentatively agreed to by the league and the players on Saturday still must be completed and ratified by both sides before the lockout will be fully lifted. That is also when teams will be allowed to sign free agents and make trades. Dec. 9 is the target date."

Free agents: 2011 and 2012.
Which NBA players can hit the market? Check out the free-agent classes of 2011, 2012.
ESPN.com
"There are big-time decisions ahead for some of the NBA's brightest ballers. Tim Duncan, Jamal Crawford, David West, Tyson Chandler and Caron Butler, among many others, could all be had -- for the right price.

And there's even more in store in 2012: Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Deron Williams and Steve Nash can all hit the open market, and 2008 draftees like Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook and Brook Lopez can join the fray as restricted free agents.

Take a look and see whom your team could lose ... or which players it might ink in '11 or '12. "

Mavericks finding out that title brings out the vultures.
By Eddie Sefko/Reporter.

"With six free agents, it was inevitable that the Mavericks were going to draw a lot of attention when conversations could start between NBA executives and player agents earlier this week.
Already, a slew of teams have shown interest in Caron Butler, J.J. Barea and, of course, Tyson Chandler.
This is what happens when you win the championship. Other teams realize that the players you have on your roster are not only good, but have intangibles like leadership skills and heart, both of which go a long way when it comes to putting together a title contender.
The latest bit of gossip is that San Antonio has made a strong push for Caron Butler, which would stand to reason because the Spurs have been less than overwhelmed with Richard Jefferson as their primary swingman.
Butler is in an interesting situation because he's coming off a serious knee injury that cost him the last four months of the regular season and all of the playoffs. For that reason, his price tag might be a little under market value.
The Mavericks, meanwhile, are willing to offer a one-year contract that probably would be at a salary that likely would be higher than Butler could get another team to offer as a starting price for a multiyear deal.
In essence, keeping a healthy Butler, would be like getting a nice free agent off the open market, since he wasn't part of the equation during the playoff run.
The harsh reality is that there's no way the Mavericks will retain all of their free agents. With that in mind, here's a quick rundown of where everybody stands -- and those who are most likely to be moving on.
Tyson Chandler: Interest from numerous teams is no surprise. The question is whether Chandler goes for the bucks or the chance to win big again -- perhaps back with the Mavericks or in New York. But others might offer more cash. Likelihood of returning: Very iffy.
J.J. Barea: He's a hot item in New York and teams like the Lakers and Clippers and others could use him. Barea's first stop after a game he played in the Dominican Republic will be back to Dallas. That should be a good indicator. Likelihood of returning: 60-40.
Caron Butler: Can't help but think that the Mavericks were even more impressed with Butler after he was injured last year than they were before. He's been the consummate professional and keeping him could make up for losses to other FAs. Likelihood of returning: Decent.
DeShawn Stevenson: Some players are just meant to be vagabonds through no real fault of their own. Stevenson was a good influence on the team last season and a good player. But there just might not be a spot for him going forward. Likelihood of returning: Dim.
Brian Cardinal: The Mavericks will wait and see what kind of nibbles Cardinal gets from other teams. But he appears to be eager to come back and the Mavericks liked what he brought to the team. Likelihood of returning: Strong.
Peja Stojakovic: The shooter extraordinaire will have plenty of options as long as he's willing to play for the veteran's minimum salary. It will come down to whether the Mavericks have an opening or not. Likelihood of returning: no better than 50-50."

J.J. Barea's current situation with Mavericks remains unclear.
Text By EDDIE SEFKO.
Staff Writer.

"The Mavericks continue to work the phone lines with the agents of their own free agents and those from other teams.

As usual with free agency, when the big fish begin to get hooked, others will follow quickly.

J.J. Barea is somewhere in the middle and his situation is unclear.

Messages on Barea's cellphone went unreturned, but he has been steadfast since the end of the season that his desire is to remain with the Mavs. But he also is in line for a nice raise from the $1.8 million he made last season.

Briefly: Nowitzki is one of 12 nominees for the U.S. Sports Academy's 2011 Male Athlete of the Year. It's the 27th year for the award, which can be voted on at ussa.edu. ... Brewer, Terry, Shawn Marion and Dominique Jones are among the Mavericks who are in town; others will begin trickling in over the weekend."

Mavericks' Chandler expects to be 'on new team come training camp.'

"Tyson Chandler, C, Dallas Mavericks, 7-1, 235 pounds: Chandler's energy, passion and performance as the Mavericks' defensive anchor played a huge role in the team winning its first NBA title. He is at the top of the NBA free-agent class and is Dallas' top free-agent priority. He averaged 8.0 points and 9.2 rebounds in the playoffs. His athleticism and ability to finish at the rim were keys for Dallas.

The Dallas Mavericks have made it known that re-signing center Tyson Chandler is their top priority this off-season. But will that priority turn into reality?

Chandler doesn't seem to think so.

"I really think I'm going to be on a new team come training camp," Chandler told ESPN.com on Wednesday. "I'm really taking a hard look at all of my options, trying to see what best suits me."

Chandler said he was disappointed with what he felt was a lack of communication between the Mavericks and his agent since the season ended.

If the Mavericks sign Chandler to a lucrative, long-term extension this off-season, it would likely prevent them from having enough cap space to participate in the free agent melee that's expected to take place next off-season, when stars like Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Dwight Howard will hit the market.

A source told SportsDay's Eddie Sefko that Chandler has no interest in signing a one-year contract with the Mavericks, though it would likely improve the team's chances of making a splash in free agency next year. According to the source, the Mavericks are working on ways to keep Chandler without handcuffing themselves for next year, and they're "willing to get creative" in order to keep him.

But Chandler remains convinced that he'll ink a deal with a different team before the season starts in December. And a decision on his future may come soon.

"I would like this to be settled by early next week," Chandler told ESPN. "I want to be in camp with my new teammates as soon as possible."

When reached by the Dallas Morning News on Wednesday night, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban declined to comment on Chandler's future."

Report: Mavs' Tyson Chandler turns down offer to play in China.

"Mavericks center Tyson Chandler has decided not to accept an offer to play basketball in China during the NBA lockout.

Chandler, a free agent, told ESPN The Magazine that he rejected a contract offer from the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions.

"I was considering it but I don't think I'm going to do it," Chandler said in a text message. "It was hard to turn down."
