Holiday tournaments offer teams different opponents.
By Sam Waller.
EULA —"With teams across the state gearing up for district play in the coming weeks, holiday tournaments offer one more chance to work out the kinks before games start counting.
At the Eula Holiday Classic, Big Country teams are also getting a chance to test themselves against opponents they normally wouldn't encounter. The Nazareth Swiftettes and Cayuga Lady Cats both traveled more than four hours to give themselves a taste of competition away from their home areas.
Both teams had first-round byes Wednesday in the 14-team girls field. Nazareth — located about an hour southwest of Amarillo — opened the second round by holding off Cisco 46-45. Cayuga — situated in the middle of an area bound by Corsicana, Athens, Palestine and Fairfield — lost 57-35 to Clyde.
"It seems like everybody we play at home, for some reason our schedule works out to where we play the same teams two and three times," Nazareth coach Eric Schilling said. "It kind of feels like everybody there knows what we're going to do and it makes it a little bit tougher on us. We can come down here and kind of open up everybody's eyes and let them know what's going on up in the Panhandle.
"There are some great teams here and we knew that coming in. We really stress during the games one possession at a time, one quarter at a time. We can't worry about what other teams are here. We've got to worry about what we're doing because district's coming up. We want to get better at what we do and what better place to do it than here with all these great teams."
Cayuga coach Tommy Cross echoed Schilling's sentiments.
"We came here exactly for that reason — to see some different teams, people we normally don't get to see over in East Texas and see a little bit different style of basketball," Cross said. "In East Texas, you tend to play very athletic teams. You come out west and you see teams that are more structured and fundamental. It's a good mix."
Cross added that making such a long trip allows his team to develop more than just basketball skills.
"It's about a 4½-hour bus ride here," he said. "We get away from home a little bit and give the girls time together. I like doing overnight tournaments for a team-unity, team-bonding type of thing."
For Cisco coach Troy Wallace and Clyde coach Chris Sumrall, the games offered their teams a chance to work on making in-game adjustments.
"We just don't have that familiarity, so we've got to go out there and adjust on the move," Wallace said. "Even when you get into district play, they're game-planning stuff and you never know what their new game plan is, so when you see those people it helps you learn how to adjust on the floor.
"We had a chance to put a team away (leading by 12 points at halftime), not realizing they were going and buck up like they did. It's a good lesson."
Sumrall said simply seeing new faces helps his team's development.
"Just about everybody in this tournament, we've either played them or seen them the past two or three years. To get to play somebody completely and totally different, where you walk into a game and don't have any idea what they're going to do, is a little bit refreshing.
"I just think when you're playing somebody who you don't know what they're going to do and you have to make adjustments on the fly, that's very similar to things you're going to have to do later in the year in district and the playoffs."
Nazareth's Alisha Rogers scored the deciding basket with 3:45 remaining and the Swiftettes (11-6) relied on defense the rest of the way. Cisco's final attempt with 10 seconds to go came up empty when Sam Kleman stole the ball from Jenna Koenig in the paint, allowing the Swiftettes to run out the clock.
Rogers finished with 18 points while Lexie Rowland added 10 for Nazareth. Cisco (9-9) was led by Blaize Scott with 18 points and MacKenzi Busby with 14.
The Lady Loboes outscored Nazareth 23-4 from midway through the first quarter until the final 90 seconds of the second and led 31-19 at halftime. Nazareth scored the first nine points of the second half to spark a 16-4 run and pull even at 35-35. The Swiftettes took the lead for good on as basket by Rogers early in the fourth quarter.
