Breckenridge boys hammer Merkel.
By Evan Ren.
MERKEL—"The Breckenridge boys gained a measure of revenge in the nightcap, dropping Merkel with a quick start and a strong defensive effort, 55-40.
Caleb Spoon had 17 points and Lane Morris added 14 more to lead the Buckaroos, who improved to 10-7 overall and 2-0 in District 5-2A.
Merkel, which trailed 31-17 at the half and 42-27 at the end of three quarters, was led by Chase Bowman with 14 points and Jason Neptune with 10.
The Badgers dropped to 10-10 and 1-1.
"They came out with a lot of intensity and we didn't match it," Merkel coach Cliff McGuire said. "They jumped on us early and we were a little shellshocked. It took us a while to get going."
The Badgers did hang around long enough to be worrisome, cutting a 15-point deficit to 11 when Baylor Mullins hit a one-hander with 3:54 to play.
Merkel, however, never managed to cut the Breckenridge lead into single digits beyond that point.
"We came out and shot the ball extremely well," Breckenridge coach Rob Ogle said. "Then we just sort of hung on at the end.
"Coach McGuire does a good job with his kids and you can never let your guard down."
