Jim Ned boys hammer Merkel.

"The Jim Ned boys used a 30-13 fourth quarter to put away Merkel 79-63 in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Will Bryant scored 29 points and Brady Leissner added 27 to pace the 19th-ranked Indians, who improved to 21-5 overall and 5-1 in district play with the win.
Merkel, which fell to 13-11 and 4-2, was led by Chase Bowman with 22.
"I think both teams got tired," Jim Ned coach Steve Bryant said. "But I think the minutes that we gave our bench — coming in to just give us some air — paid off in the end."
Jim Ned will next see action when it hosts Hawley on Friday. Merkel will travel to Cisco on the same evening.
"They made shots late and we didn't," Merkel coach Cliff McGuire said. "They did a good job of stepping up when the time came.
"Defensively, we did a good job and held them in check for (most) of the game. But they're a great team and you're not going to hold them down the entire time."

Eastland coach Doug Galyean chalks up win No. 600.

"After more than 30 years of coaching, Eastland coach Doug Galyean chalked up win No. 600 Tuesday night with a 45-38 victory over Anson on the road.

Galyean's victory total includes a four-year stint at Cisco College. But the bulk of his wins have come at the high school level, which has covered 14 years during two tenures at Eastland, along with stops at Ranger, Groom, Liberty Hill and The Colony.

He was aware of the approaching milestone, but never drew attention to it.

"I'm too worried about trying to get into the playoffs right now," said the 54-year-old Galyean, whose club is 13-2 overall and 5-1 in District 5-2A. "But one day, it will be nice to look back on."

If Galyean's Mavericks do reach the playoffs, they won't be strangers to the bracket. Aside from 10 district championships, his teams also have reached three regional tournaments.

"I don't feel like I've ever been to work a day in my life," Galyean said. "I've been blessed to do something I really love, and hopefully, Eastland will want to keep me a little longer and we'll see what happens."

JIM NED ROLLS WITH THE PUNCHES.

Despite suffering through what many viewed as an upset loss to Eastland and a sluggish effort in a 52-50 win over Breckenridge last week, the Jim Ned boys followed it up with a solid 79-63 win over Merkel on Tuesday.

The Indians (21-5, 4-1 District 5-2A), who entered last week ranked at No. 6, dropped to No. 19 in the most recent statewide poll. But that's not something coach Steve Bryant is paying close attention to.

"We came out a little flat last week," he said. "We didn't respond to Eastland's intensity, but we didn't go back on Wednesday and try to reinvent the wheel.

"We've just made up our mind that teams are going to give us their best shot every night. It's a very competitive district and at one point, we had five teams tied at 3-1.

"We just took it at as one of 35 games — a bump in the road — and just got back to work."

BC Player of the Week: Jim Ned's Bryant earns top billing.

"It isn't often then one sees a Jim Ned basketball player sitting atop the Big Country Player of the Week column, and that holds true for both the girls and boys programs, which have established themselves as consistent area powers.

This is largely due to a traditional effort to emphasize offensive balance, making huge numbers from one individual player a rarity in Tuscola.

This week is an exception.

Will Bryant, the son of Jim Ned coach Steve Bryant, has taken this week's accolade, after the junior forward produced totals of 48 points, 19 rebounds, six assists and four steals in wins over Merkel and Hawley.

"Will's size has been an advantage for us this year," coach Bryant said. "He's a 6-foot-6 kid who can play inside and outside and that's been a big plus.

"He's grown about six inches since his freshman year, so he can play inside or outside for us."

The Indians improved to 22-5 overall and 6-1 in District 5-2A with the two victories — not an unfamiliar position for a program accustomed to challenging for regional berths.

"We've always had a balanced program and I think that's one of the reasons for our success," coach Bryant said. "Over the years, no one player has stood out as someone the defense needs to stop.

"And the kids realize that. Recognition is nice, but they understand it's more about team recognition and we've been traditionally strong for quite a while for those reasons."
