Wylie boys motor past Jim Ned.
By Daniel Youngblood.
Abilene Reporter-News.
TUSCOLA--"After spotting Wylie a 40-19 halftime lead on Tuesday, the Jim Ned boys rallied to pull within four in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. But the Bulldogs closed the game on a 20-13 run, going 11-of-12 from the free throw line down the stretch, to hold off the Indians in a 69-58 road win.
Wylie, now 6-3, couldn't have asked for a better start. And Jim Ned couldn't have started worse against an aggressive Bulldogs defense.
Wylie shot 54 percent from the field over the first two quarters, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range, and made it difficult on the other end just for the Indians to hold onto the ball. Jim Ned hit seven of 19 shots in the first half, but thanks to 12 first-half turnovers, the Indians found themselves in a big hole.
But after watching the Bulldogs take a nine-point lead into the second quarter and stretch that to 21 by halftime, Jim Ned battled back in the third.
Led by Will Bryant, who scored 20 of his game-high 22 points after halftime, the Indians outscored the Bulldogs 22-7 in the third period. And with a pair of free throws by Bryant and a layup by Brady Leissner, Jim Ned cut Wylie's lead to 49-45 to start the fourth quarter.
"We watched Wylie shoot in the first half and they kind of showed us how it's done," Jim Ned coach Steve Bryant said. "And so we came out in the second half, thought we'd try it and kind of got back in the game."
But with the Indians storming toward the lead, Wylie junior Josh Davila hit a 3-pointer from the wing — his last of two second-half triples — to shift momentum back in favor of the Bulldogs. And Jim Ned never got closer than five after that.
"We just needed one shot to go in and Josh hit a big 3 for us right there," Perkins said. "Even though it happened early in the fourth, I think that was the bucket of the game just in letting us know, 'Hey, it can actually go in once in a while.'
"That kind of stopped that rush and settled everything down."
After Davila's 3-pointer, Will Bryant hit a layup to pull the Indians back within five. And from there, the teams traded runs.
The Bulldogs scored six straight to push ahead 58-47, followed by a 5-0 Jim Ned run that made the score 58-52 and prompted a Wylie timeout with 2:07 to play.
That was as close as the Indians would get, however. The Bulldogs scored 11 for the final 17 points, including eight free throws from Mike Lopez, who went 10-for-10 from the line in the fourth quarter to lead his team with 16 points.
"Mike made them tonight," Perkins said. "He's worked really hard on that because he struggled a little bit early. But I think he settled down a little, and tonight he really hit some big free throws for us down the stretch."
While Lopez led Wylie in scoring, the Bulldogs got contributions from a number of players. Ten players scored for Perkins and six finished with at least six points.
After Lopez, Duane Hopper had 10, Hunter Musgrave scored nine, Davila finished with eight, Patrick Walker netted seven and Tyler Hicks scored six.
Jim Ned, meanwhile, had three players reach double figures scoring. After Will Bryant's 22, the Indians got 11 points from Brady Leissner and 10 from Austin Mays.
That wasn't quite enough, though, to overcome the Bulldogs' hot start and avoid falling to 7-2 on the year.
"(Wylie is) a good team that's wanting to play in March, just like we're wanting to play in March," Steve Bryant said. "Good teams come through in those tight situations, and they certainly did tonight."
