Heat-Mavericks Notebook.
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.
"THE FACTS: Dallas received a championship banner for Christmas. Miami, the team it defeated to win last season's NBA Finals, received a dose of revenge. LeBron James scored 37 points and Dwyane Wade added 26 as the Heat soured Sunday's season-opening celebration in Dallas and snapped a long regular-season losing streak to the Mavericks with a wire-to-wire 105-94 victory. Dallas, led by Jason Terry (23 points) and Dirk Nowitzki (21), had won 14 straight regular-season meetings against Miami dating back to 2004.
QUOTABLE: "It's not about last year's storyline. It's not about anything else other than trying to establish our season on the right note. And obviously I think we did that for the most part."
--Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra
THE STAT: James broke the Heat record for points in a season opener, set by Tim Hardaway with 32 in a double-overtime victory against Detroit on Nov. 2, 1999. James was 11-for-19 from the field and 15-for-19 at the line with 10 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks.
TURNING POINT: Pick a run, any run. Dallas came out flat after an emotional pregame ceremony and Miami maintained control with a 21-4 surge in the first period, a 17-1 spurt in the second and a 16-2 run in the third. The latter, capped by James' alley-oop tip pass to Wade for a dunk, gave the Heat its biggest lead at 78-43.
HOT: The Heat shot 57.1 percent from the field through the first three quarters, including 4-for-5 behind the arc. Miami led 97-65 entering the fourth, then emptied its bench and was outscored 29-8 during the final quarter.
NOT: Dallas newcomers Lamar Odom and Vince Carter made less-than-favorable first impressions. Odom was ejected at the 5:06 mark of the third quarter after picking up his second technical foul arguing a call, exiting the game with four points (1-of-6 shooting), four rebounds and four fouls. Carter started and contributed five points and three assists in 20:41.
NOTABLE: Miami improved to 6-2 all-time on Christmas Day and 12-12 in season openers, while Dallas lost for the first time on Dec. 25 (2-1) and dropped to 18-14 in openers. .
.. Heat rookie guard Norris Cole tallied seven points and four turnovers in his NBA debut. .
.. Miami outscored Dallas 44-28 in the paint and 31-10 in fastbreak points. ..
. The Heat outrebounded the Mavs 51-31. ..
. There were a combined 40 turnovers in the game, 23 by Miami. .
.. NBA Commissioner David Stern participated in the banner-raising ceremony. .
.. This was the 400th straight regular-season sellout (20,421) at the American Airlines Center.
UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Monday vs. Denver."

Nuggets-Mavericks notebook.
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.
"THE FACTS: For the second straight day, the defending champs looked defenseless. Ty Lawson scored 27 points to lead five Denver players in double figures as the Nuggets opened their season with a lopsided 115-93 victory Monday in Dallas. Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 for the Mavericks, who fell behind by more than 30 points for the second consecutive game and dropped to 0-2 on their home court.
QUOTABLE: "It's way too early to get crazy, but it felt good."
-- Nuggets head coach George Karl
THE STAT: After giving up 30-plus points to Miami in each of the first three quarters on Sunday, the Mavericks allowed 32 points in the first quarter and 37 in the second to Denver. That's five of the first six quarters. Last season, no Dallas opponent registered a 30-point period until New Orleans scored 33 in the third quarter of the Mavericks' 10th game on Nov. 17, 2010.
TURNING POINT: After Jason Kidd drained a 3-pointer with 6:28 left in the second quarter to pull Dallas within 47-41, Denver scored 20 unanswered points until Nowitzki converted a technical free throw with 44.9 seconds remaining. Lawson scored nine of his 21 first-half points in that run, during which the Mavericks missed eight straight shots and committed six of their 20 turnovers.
QUOTABLE II: "We've got to rebuild trust defensively. We've lost some. We've lost a lot. I've got to do a better job coaching these guys, simple as that."
-- Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle.
HOT: Denver point guards Lawson and Andre Miller were a combined 16-for-23 from the field (5-for-8 from 3-point distance) and 8-for-8 at the line with nine assists, nine rebounds and six steals. Miller scored 18 points.
NOT: The Mavericks trailed by as many as 35 points (78-43) in Sunday's 105-94 loss to the Heat. They fell behind by 33 points (95-62) against the Nuggets.
FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Mavericks forward Lamar Odom shot 1-for-10 from the field (0-for-5 from long range) and finished with six points and seven rebounds. He's just 2-for-16 through two games. Al Harrington (18 points), Danilo Gallinari (15) and Arron Afflalo (11, all in the second half) also scored in double figures for Denver.
INSIDE THE ARENA: Just one day after the Mavericks raised the first championship banner in the franchise's 31-year history, fans at the American Airlines Center started booing the defending champs in the second quarter.
ROOKIE WATCH: Forward Kenneth Faried, Denver's first-round pick (No. 22 overall), was inactive. "Being on the road ... first-game jitters," Karl said. Last season at Morehead State, Faried passed Tim Duncan to become the NCAA Division I modern-era (post-1973) career rebounding leader.
NOTABLE: The Mavericks have 21 more back-to-backs on the schedule, but only one more of the home-home variety (Jan. 13-14 vs. Milwaukee and Sacramento). .
.. The last time Dallas started 0-2 was in 2006-07 (0-4). .
.. Mavs forward Sean Williams, playing in his first NBA game in nearly two years (Jan. 6, 2010 with the Nets), tossed in 12 points off the bench on 4-for-4 shooting before tossing his cookies on the sidelines. .
.. Eight players grabbed at least four rebounds for Denver, which won the battle of the boards 47-37. .
.. The Nuggets have won six of their last eight regular-season games played in Dallas.
UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Thursday @ Oklahoma City."

Tyson Chandler Unsurprised About The Dallas Mavericks Slow Start
NBA, New York Knicks, Tyson Chandler.
Tyson Chandler, who played a major role in the Dallas Mavericks 2011 NBA Championship last season, says he is not surprised that his former club is off to a slow start this season, according to the New York Post.
“Honestly, I kind of saw it coming because when you put a team in a situation where you say, ‘You’re the defending champions, but we’re not necessarily trying to repeat,’ and when I say that, I’m not saying that they don’t have the pieces there, I obviously think very highly of those guys, but I say that because they offered everybody one-year deals,” Chandler told the post.
“So they knew nobody was going to necessarily accept that. … And when you have veteran guys in the locker room, the type of guys they got, in this time of their career, it’s tough to face that.
“I think they’re just going through a little lull right now. But I’m hoping for those guys that it turns around because there’s truly good guys in that locker room.”
The Mavericks have began the 2011-12 season 0-2, with blowlout losses to the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets.
Last season Chandler averaged 10.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game for the Mavericks. The 29-year-old center signed a four-year, $56 million contract with the Knicks this offseason."

Former Jazz center Ostertag begins comeback Thursday at Frisco.<br />
By Eddie Sefko / Reporter.<br />
<br />
<br />
"Greg Ostertag, one of the best basketball players to come out of Duncanville and an 11-year NBA veteran, will begin a comeback Thursday night with the Texas Legends that he hopes will lead to the NBA.<br />
<br />
The National Basketball Development League team based in Frisco came to an agreement with the 7-2 Ostertag this afternoon and he will make his debut Thursday against Rio Grande Valley in a home game at Dr Pepper Arena.<br />
<br />
He's also expected to play Friday against Tulsa.<br />
<br />
Ostertag spent most of his NBA career with the Utah Jazz and was one of the most the best shot-blockers in the league, swatting a shot every 11.4 minutes of playing time.<br />
<br />
"I missed playing,'' Ostertag said. "I shouldn't have quit when I did and I feel like I got to give it one last shot to see if I can make it happen.<br />
<br />
"I know there's a lot of naysayers out there who think I couldn't play when I was younger and how am I going to be able to play now? But I'm going to give myself a month or two to get in really good shape and see what happens.''<br />
<br />
Ostertag toyed with the idea of making a comeback a couple of years ago, but after consulting with his family thought better of it.<br />
<br />
By joining the Legends, Ostertag is not beholden to the Mavericks, should he show enough ability to earn a call-up to the NBA. Any team could offer him a contract.<br />
<br />
However, the Mavericks clearly are looking for another big man. Starting center Brendan Haywood has been erratic in the first two games and the Mavericks lost out on free agent Kyrylo Fesenko, who is expected to sign with Golden State.<br />
<br />
Ostertag last played in 2005-06, retiring at age 32. He started 22 games that season for Utah. He was a member of two NBA Finals teams in the '90s while teaming with John Stockton and Karl Malone, losing to Michael Jordan and the Bulls both seasons.<br />
<br />
Ostertag averaged 4.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in 89 playoff games."<span style="display: none"> </span></div>
