Mavericks-Heat Preview.
By TIM REYNOLDS.
MIAMI (AP)"LeBron James said it was one of the most painful moments that he can remember, one that is weighing heavily on him as the Miami Heat get ready for an NBA finals rematch with the Dallas Mavericks.

No, the Heat forward isn't talking about losing last year's title series.

He's talking about dislocating the ring finger on his left, non-shooting, hand at Indiana earlier this week.

"The only recovery for it, the doctors told me, was rest," James said. "And I think we all know I'm having none of that."

Not now, anyway - not with the Mavericks coming back to the building where they celebrated winning a championship a little over nine months ago, and not with the Heat trying to snap a two-game slide that left them looking up at both Chicago and Oklahoma City in the race for the NBA's best record.

Dallas visits Miami on Thursday night, the second and final meeting of this regular season between the clubs.

The first one: All Miami. The Heat watched the Mavs raise their championship banner on Christmas Day, then built as much as a 35-point lead before settling for a 105-94 victory.

"A bad taste in our mouth," Mavs guard Jason Terry said.

So as much as the Heat remember Dallas celebrating on their floor, the Mavs remember the opener, too.

"We've got to think back to Christmas Day because that was a miserable experience for us," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "That was really tough. I was watching some of it (Tuesday). They played terrific, and they were great that day, and we weren't, and so we're going to have to play a lot better."

Which is sort of a Heat mantra these days as well.

The Heat have been held under 100 points in 11 of their last 13 games, and that's not even the most staggering stat. Through March 1, Miami was the league's highest-scoring team at 103.8 points per game. Since then, the Heat are 25th at 93.1 points per game - and all the clubs they're outscoring are well outside the playoff picture.

Miami has a 14-game home winning streak, the margin of victory in those games a little over 10 points. But after losing at Oklahoma City and Indiana by a combined 31 points - the first time since James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh became teammates nearly two years ago that the Heat endured double-digit losses in consecutive games - Heat coach Erik Spoelstra decided Wednesday's practice was the right time to address the slippage.

Not with words, but with action.

"Every team goes through this," Spoelstra said. "Sometimes you take things for granted and you become flat over the course of a long NBA season. And this season's been a challenge for everybody. So it's not an excuse."

James went through the workout, though his left ring finger was bandaged afterward. He dislocated it in the first quarter against Indiana on Monday, popping it back into place himself and labored through the rest of the game. James was catching passes with his right hand only for much of that game, and this latest concern comes not long after two nasty falls in a game against Phoenix last week.

"He's got a football-type mentality," Heat forward Udonis Haslem said. "No one can ever question his toughness."

The Mavericks have won two straight, maybe turning things around after a stretch where they lost 11 of 18 games. Entering Wednesday, Dallas had the fifth-best record in the Western Conference, and was only two games ahead of ninth-place Houston.

Clearly, there's not a lot of time for reminiscing over last year's title run right now. And that may be one of the reasons why Mavs owner Mark Cuban didn't bring his championship ring on this trip to Miami.

"When I walk in, it'll be fun," Cuban said. "And when I hear from their fans, it'll be more interesting. But we've got bigger issues to address."

Dallas has only six home games left, and three of those are next week. If the Mavericks are going to make a real playoff push, it probably should be starting right about now.

"Well, it's another critical game in the standings," Carlisle said. "We know they are a terrific team. They've lost a couple of games. We've been a little up and down over the last three weeks, so you know it's ... we've got to get ready to lace it up and come at them."

James said he never wants to use injuries as an excuse, and that if he's in uniform, he should be considered ready to play. And he plans to be in uniform on Thursday night.

"The last few weeks, we haven't played to how we're capable of playing," James said. "It can change with (Thursday's) performance. So we're going to go out there and do what we need to do."

Mavs don't have time to reminisce.
Team returns to scene of greatest triumph, but focus is on preparing for playoffs.
Updated:By Jean-Jacques Taylor | ESPNDallas.com.

MIAMI--"Black suits. Jason Terry in the zone. Dirk Nowitzki unstoppable at winning time.

South Beach. Club LIV. Six-digit bottles of bubbly.

Championship memories.

The Mavs celebrated their first title the last time they were on Miami's court, but now they face the Heat fighting for a playoff spot.
When the Dallas Mavericks made their last trip to South Beach 290 days ago, they were the NBA's best team, humbling superstars Dwyane Wade and LeBron James -- the dudes who mocked them during the series -- en route to winning their first NBA championship.

Normally, the first trip back to Miami would evoke all sort of feel-good memories.

Not now.

See, there's no time to reminisce based on the way this team has been consistently inconsistent all season.

Only 15 games remain in this lockout-shortened 66-game season, and the fifth-seeded Mavs aren't close to clinching a playoff spot. Actually, they're only two games ahead of ninth-place Houston in the Western Conference.

So any type of prolonged slump could result in the unthinkable -- missing the playoffs. Laugh, if you want.

We're talking about a team that already has lost to raggedy teams such as New Jersey and New Orleans since the All-Star break. Eleven of the Mavs' 22 losses have been by at least 10 points, including seven of 15 points or more. And don't forget they're just 10-14 on the road.

That ain't championship-caliber basketball.

Mark Cuban insists he isn't worried about it. Neither, really, is Rick Carlisle. Or Dirk. Or any player who matters.

All They want is a spot in the playoffs -- even if they must start on the road.

Then the schedule will be more conducive for their eight players in their 30s because they'll have a day or two between games to rest their bodies and practice, enabling the Mavs to play their best basketball.

First, though, they must make the postseason.

Sweeping this two-game swing through Florida, which consists of a back-to-back against Miami and Orlando, would give the Mavs a shot of confidence as we move closer toward the end of the regular season.

They'd settle for a split.

After all, the Heat embarrassed the Mavs on Christmas Day with a 105-94 win. In the fourth quarter, Miami led by as many as 33 points.

"Christmas Day was miserable," Carlisle said.

Other than that, he wasn't interested in reminiscing about the Mavs winning the championship on Miami's court.

"I'm not going to get into all of that," he said.

Dirk didn't want to dwell on it too much either. It's hard to blame him, when you think about it.

The Mavs have had a banner celebration, a ring ceremony for the team and one for each of the players no longer on the team, including Tyson Chandler, Jose Juan Barea and Caron Butler.

"We've sort of been celebrating all year," Dirk said. "It seems like every other day we've had something going on. Now it's time to get ready for the playoffs, but it's nice to go back to the scene of the crime, so to speak."

Perhaps this is just the kind of challenge the Mavs need to find the swagger they've been missing virtually all season. Obviously, Miami would love nothing more than to deliver yet another butt-kicking, especially after consecutive losses by a combined 31 points. James has a dislocated finger on his non-shooting hand, but he's not about to miss the game. Miami, which is 35-13 and has the Eastern Conference's second-best record, has won 14 consecutive home games.

While the Mavs have been inconsistent all season, the Heat have played at a high level. They've been so good their current two-game losing streak is a cause of concern.

We chuckle in Dallas, where style points have been abolished. The Mavs have had four losing streaks of at least three games this season.

Leave it to Jet to forget about being politically correct. He's wearing his championship ring to Miami.

"It'll be fierce," he said about the atmosphere. "The championship is a long memory now. The only thing I can remember is Christmas Day."

Maybe, he'll have another game to remember after Thursday night's contest."

LeBron James to keep playing.
By Michael Wallace | ESPN.com.
MIAMI --"LeBron James confirmed Wednesday he's dealing with a dislocated finger in addition to other pains, but said he doesn't plan to skip games to rest anytime soon.

"I've still got work to do," James said after the Heat's practice in preparation for Thursday's home game against the Dallas Mavericks in a matchup of last season's NBA Finals. "I'll be ready. I hate using injuries as an excuse. If I'm in uniform, then I should be good to go. The only recovery for it, the doctors told me, was rest. And I think we all know I'm having none of that."

James injured the ring finger on his left (non-shooting) hand in the first half of Monday's loss against the Indiana Pacers, but finished the game and never made mention of the dislocation afterward. Addressing the injury for the first time on Wednesday, James said he quickly "popped" the finger back into place and got some treatment before resuming playing against the Pacers.

James finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and six turnovers in 41 minutes against Indiana. Citing a source, ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard first reported Tuesday that James might have dislocated the finger. The Heat did not practice Tuesday. James also has been dealing with lingering elbow and neck soreness from a couple of hard falls he took during a March 20 game against the Phoenix Suns.

The combination of injuries has come with James in the midst of his worst offensive slump since he joined the Heat last season. He has averaged 18.4 points and shot about 40 percent from the field over the past five games. For the season, James ranks third in the league in scoring at 26.7 points per game and is shooting a career-best 53.4 percent from the field.

The latest injury, James said, has impacted his ability to dribble and rebound "because you have to squeeze the ball." But he also said he'll make adjustments and play through the discomfort. The Heat's practices on Wednesday provided a significant test, with coach Erik Spoelstra pushing the team through physical drills that he compared to a training camp workout.

The Heat have performed inconsistently since the All-Star break and are coming off lopsided losses to Oklahoma City and the Pacers on consecutive nights. Miami was outscored by a combined 31 points in those games and committed 38 turnovers.

Spoelstra said the practice was designed to address "slippage" in his team's play. James made it through the workout, but wore a splint on the finger.

"You can't feel nothing because it's definitely [bandaged]," James said. "It's probably an injury I'm going to have for a while. The good thing about it is I got through [practice] without getting hit. I feel good about it. We needed it."

Spoelstra said James has been cleared by doctors and the training staff to continue playing, and that he was told none of the ailments could get any worse by playing. In essence, it's a matter of his pain tolerance.

"If he can get through a practice like this, he can get through any game," Spoelstra said. "LeBron is a tough guy. He's a warrior. I've seen him play through injuries in the last year and a half that most players wouldn't. And I'm not talking just games. He's a guy who rarely misses practices, shootarounds. A day like today, you can probably make a case he could sit out to rest. But he understands how important the work part is."

The Heat's depth at small forward is also affected by a sprained ankle that has kept James' backup, Mike Miller, out of the lineup since March 10. Spoelstra said Miller's condition is improving but that Miller has yet to participate in a contact practice.

James laughed when asked Wednesday if he might need to be protected from himself by being told he should sit out a few games to rest. He has missed only one game this season when he sat out Jan. 5 against the Atlanta Hawks with a sprained ankle.

The Heat (35-13) are 3½ games behind the Chicago Bulls for the Eastern Conference's best record. They also are in the midst of a tough stretch in the schedule, with seven of their next nine games against teams jockeying for playoff position.

Barring any additional setbacks, James said he would consider resting for a couple of games at the end of the regular season late next month once the Heat's playoff seed is secured.

"I just don't like letting my teammates down, honestly," James said. "I've had a lot of battles over my years with myself, coaches and trainers -- trying to keep me from playing. Sometimes, I know it's best for the team for me to sit. Sometimes I know, for me personally, I would like to play. So I don't have a hard time with it.""

Miami Heat Dominate Dallas Mavericks: Fan Reaction.
By David King, Yahoo! Contributor Network.

"After losing two straight games, the Miami Heat got back on track against the Dallas Mavericks, defeating the defending champions 106-86 on March 29. With the win, the Heat complete their season sweep of the Mavericks, increasing their home-win streak to 15 games.

The Mavericks took control in the opening quarter. But the Heat switched things around in the second quarter, outscoring the Mavericks by 12 points. The Heat held on to their lead in the third quarter. And their defense sealed the deal in the final quarter, holding the Mavericks to only 13 points.

"It was a total team win, and everyone did something positive," Dwyane Wade told reporters after the game. "We're going to need that playing three games in four nights. … I think the best thing we did was move the ball around. Everybody got some touches. We understand it was only two losses, but we couldn't lose not playing our style of basketball. This was about getting back to what we're successful doing on both sides of the floor."

LeBron James and Chris Bosh led Miami's offense against the Mavericks, finishing with 19 points and 9 rebounds (game-high) apiece. Wade also played well against Dallas, putting up 16 points and 5 assists.

"We just worked our habits," James told reporters. "The best thing about tonight, we didn't take another step backwards like we did the last two games. And it was good to see."

The Heat's role players have been under a lot of scrutiny lately, but they turned things around against the Mavericks. Udonis Haslem, Mario Chalmers, and Norris Cole stepped up their game against the Mavericks, finishing with 16, 12, and 10 points respectively.

Ronny Turiaf continued playing well for Miami, establishing himself as an inside presence against Dallas. Turiaf finished with 6 rebounds, 4 points, and 3 blocks.

The Heat's role players stepped up to the plate against the Mavericks, and fans can only hope they keep it up in their upcoming games. They'll now head up north, where they'll face the Toronto Raptors on March 30."

David is a Miami Heat fan that has followed the team for 16 years.

Miami Heat’s Big 3 leads balanced effort over Dallas Mavericks.
By Andre C. Fernandez The Miami Herald.

" LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade fueled Miami to a victory over Dallas, getting a measure of revenge for the Heat’s loss to the Mavs in last season’s NBA Finals.

It was clear even hours before tipoff, the Heat was ready to put a stop to its recent lackluster efforts.
Back home and with another chance to get a little payback against the team that denied it a championship last June, the Heat recovered its energy and snapped a losing streak at two games with a 106-85 victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night at AmericanAirlines Arena.
“It was a total team win, and everyone did something positive,” Dwyane Wade said. “We’re going to need that playing three games in four nights.”
At least for one night, the Heat (36-13) shed its recent woes and pulled away from the Mavericks behind some intense defense in the second half.
The Heat extended its home-winning streak to 15 games and dealt the Mavericks (29-23) their ninth road loss in their past 11 road games. The Heat is 21-2 at home this season.
LeBron James and Chris Bosh each finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, and Wade scored 16 points as the Heat swept the two-game season series with Dallas.
“I think the best thing we did was move the ball around,” Wade said. “Everybody got some touches. We understand it was only two losses, but we couldn’t lose not playing our style of basketball. This was about getting back to what we’re successful doing on both sides of the floor.”
The Heat went through an intense shootaround early Thursday.
The session was said to have lasted nearly 45 minutes longer than usual.
Over an hour before tipoff, it was clear the Heat — and especially James — had a little more bounce in its step.
James, who sustained a dislocated finger on his left (nonshooting) hand in the Heat’s loss at Indiana on Monday, was zoned in during the pregame in the team’s locker room.
The injury had no obvious ill effects on James, who delivered early and often.
James hit his first three shots and played well defensively throughout. He then delivered the exclamation point with a late dunk on a fast break.
“It was a total carry-over from the shootaround to the game,” James said. “There wasn’t much that needed to be said. The best thing about [Thursday] was that we didn’t take another step backwards.”
Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points for Dallas, but it did not do any significant damage as he went 9 for 19 from the field. Nowitzki had struggled from three-point range the past three games, going 2 for 11. Nowitzki took only one shot Thursday from beyond the arc, and he missed.
The Heat also got a strong spark from Udonis Haslem and Norris Cole off the bench.
Cole, who has struggled recently, shot 5 of 9 from the field and finished with 10 points and two assists. Many of his contributions came early as the Heat staved off some early Dallas sharpshooting.
Haslem played well on both sides of the ball.
Haslem finished with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and was physical defending Nowitzki when he matched up with Dallas’ superstar.
Among his highlights, Haslem had an emphatic dunk in the fourth quarter off an assist from Wade.
The Heat also rebounded well, something it had not done in its losses to Indiana and Oklahoma City.
Miami out-rebounded Dallas 44-29. The Heat is 10-0 this season when it out-rebounds an opponent by a double-digit margin.
Dallas shot well in the first quarter, shooting 54 percent from the field and making five three-pointers. But the Mavericks finished shooting 42.3 percent and were limited to a season-low two fast-break points.
The Heat outscored the Mavericks 36-24 in the second quarter and used an 8-0 surge in the third quarter to begin to pull away.
The Heat will now try to figure out how to sustain the momentum as it goes on the road for games in Toronto on Friday and Boston on Sunday.
“No matter what, you always want to defend home court,” Bosh said. “Hopefully, this will give us some momentum. This is a big road trip for us. We are looking to turn the corner. As long as we keep elevating our play day by day, we’ll be in the right spot come April.”

Mavs need consistent Jason Terry.
With playoffs in doubt, Jet needs to get right and not worry about his next home.
By Jean-Jacques Taylor | ESPNDallas.com .

MIAMI--"Jason Terry wore his gold Reebok shoes from last summer's NBA Finals on Thursday night against the Miami Heat, an in-your-face reminder of how he helped the Dallas Mavericks win their first title.

Well, you know what they say about karma.

Terry made just 1 of 10 shots -- he was 0-for-5 in the second half -- and finished with the same number of personal fouls (3) as he did points in 31 frustrating minutes.

Jason Terry had as many personal fouls (3) as points in a 1-for-10 shooting night against Miami and also expressed interest in joining the Heat.
When you wear gold shoes, you have to score more than one bucket.

Seriously.

It's right there in the NBA players' swag handbook.

Perhaps Jet struggled because he put too much pressure on himself. Wearing gold shoes is one thing; telling Fox Sports Florida that he'd be interested in playing for the Heat if the Mavs don't re-sign him after the season is just bad business.

"Miami is definitely a title contender. For sure," Terry told the website when asked if he'd be interested in joining the Heat. "[Team president] Pat Riley is a great guy, and what he's done with the organization is tremendous.

"No question, they need a veteran shooter, a guy who can score besides LeBron [James] and [Dwyane Wade] and they know they can count on. I'm a guy that's been in this league 13 years, [averaging] 15 points a night, easy. Off the bench or the starting lineup, it doesn't matter. So I think I'd be an asset to them."

No good could possibly come from those types of comments. Jet's better than that.

Or at least he should be.

This isn't really the time for the 34-year-old to be consumed by his contract. This is the time to help the Mavs make the playoffs. After this latest butt-kicking, the Mavs have only a one-game lead in the loss column against ninth-place Denver, which means the playoffs remain in doubt.

Jet talks about the franchise's loyalty to him all the time, but he owes it some loyalty, too. We all know pro sports is a business, but it's important for the player and the team to treat each other with respect.

When Jet talks about joining the Heat less than two hours before a game against Miami, it's disrespectful to the owner, the coach and his teammates.

The Mavs need him to get his game right on a consistent basis since it's hard for the Mavs to win on the nights Jet struggles, because he and Dirk Nowitzki are the team's only consistent scorers.

Against the Heat, the Mavs needed more offense from the man with the poor attitude wearing the outlandish shoes. The Mavs are 4-4 when Jet fails to reach double figures but have lost three of the past four. Last season, the Mavs were 5-7 when he scored fewer than 10 points.

That qualifies as a trend.

Rick Carlisle took some responsibility for Jet's poor shooting night.

"They had their best defender on him and they were trapping him on the pick and roll," Carlisle said. "I needed to do a better job of getting him good shots. That's on me."

Maybe. Maybe not.

Frankly, Shane Battier may have had more to do with shutting Jet down than Carlisle's offensive schemes.

Miami stole a defensive philosophy from the Mavs, so to speak, opting to use the 6-foot-8 Battier on Terry, much like how the Mavs stick 6-7 Shawn Marion on their opponent's best offensive player.

"When you go 1-for-10," said Jet, "those aren't the kind of looks you want."

Battier harassed Jet, crowding him when he had the ball. Even with his quick release, Jet rarely had a clean look at the basket.

By consistently trapping him on the pick and roll, Miami forced Jet to be a playmaker, which is hardly his strength. Nothing wrong with that strategy, considering he finished with four assists and three turnovers.

Jet can pass the ball effectively in spurts, but the Mavs pay him to put the ball in the basket -- not to set up his teammates.

Dirk provides the foundation of the Mavs' offense and most of it runs through him, but Jet gives the Mavs swag. They feed off his energy. When he hits a key 3-pointer and runs down the court with his wings up, it energizes the Mavs -- no matter how hokey it seems. That's because the emotion, the passion, is all real.

The Mavs trailed 60-53 at halftime, and Jet had made just 1 of 5 shots. Over the years, we've all seen him get into the zone after a bad half or bad three quarters. All it takes, sometimes, is one shot. He never made it against Miami.

Now, the Mavs must face a rested Orlando Magic team on the second night of a back-to-back.

"We'll bounce back," Terry said. "That's all I got."

And then he was gone. Navy blue Beats headphones covering his ears, an iPad 2 in his hands and a scowl on his face.

The gold shoes? They were nowhere to be seen."

http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/_/i ... ext-season

Jason Terry considering Heat.
By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com.

"Add Jason Terry to the list of players who can see themselves joining the Miami Heat next season.

Then again, Terry could envision himself calling any NBA city home next season, as he's already admitted he feels like he's "auditioning for 29 other teams" during the final months of his contract with the Dallas Mavericks.

However, Terry indicated to Fox Sports Florida before Thursday night's loss in Miami that the Heat are an especially intriguing potential option.

"Miami is definitely a title contender. For sure," Terry told the website when asked whether he'd be interested in joining the Heat. "(Team president) Pat Riley is a great guy and what he's done with the organization is tremendous.

"No question, they need a veteran shooter, a guy who can score besides LeBron (James) and (Dwyane Wade), and they know they can count on. I'm a guy that's been in this league 13 years, (averaging) 15 points a night, easy. Off the bench or the starting lineup, it doesn't matter. So I think I'd be an asset to them."

Terry didn't exactly ace this job interview. Wearing gold shoes to celebrate the title the Mavs clinched in Miami last summer, Terry had his worst shooting performance of the season, missing 9 of 10 field goal attempts during a three-point performance.

Terry had his request for a preseason contract extension fall on deaf ears. He is dealing with the reality that his dream of retiring in Dallas isn't likely to happen.

"My main goal was to come back and retire a Maverick," Terry told the website. "After no extension this past offseason, I figure it may be time for me to move on. But you never know& I would love to (continue) in a Maverick uniform, don't get me wrong. But we'll see what happens.

"They said they want me back. But you can say all you want, you got to show me. Like Jerry Maguire said, 'Show me the money.' "

The Heat won't have a lot of money to show Terry this summer. Miami has three stars (James, Wade and Chris Bosh) locked up to lucrative, long-term deals, leaving the Heat without any space under the salary cap. The most Miami would have to offer Terry is the mini-midlevel exception of $3 million per season, a huge cut from the $11.2 million salary he's making in the final season of his six-year, $57 million contract.

That might present a problem, but Terry said he'll see what the market dictates and didn't rule out being involved in a sign-and-trade deal. One thing that wouldn't be an issue for Terry is joining a franchise that he faced in a heated championship series in 2006 and last season.

"Not at all," Terry told Fox Sports Florida. "That jersey has a logo on it. It says, 'NBA.' No matter what team it is, it doesn't matter. So I'll be excited."

Heat win finals rematch, top Dallas 106-85.
By TIM REYNOLDS.
MIAMI (AP)"No fourth-quarter collapse this time against Dallas. These days, everything seems to be going right at home for the Miami Heat.
LeBron James and Chris Bosh each finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem scored 16 apiece and the Heat extended the league's longest home winning streak this season to 15 games with a 106-85 win over the Mavericks in an NBA finals rematch on Thursday night.
Mario Chalmers scored 12 points and Norris Cole added 10 for Miami, which swept its two games with Dallas this season and snapped a two-game losing streak.
"We just worked our habits," James said. "The best thing about tonight, we didn't take another step backwards like we did the last two games. And it was good to see."
Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 for Dallas, but was held to 1-for-9 shooting in the second half. Lamar Odom had 12 for the Mavericks, who were outrebounded 44-29 and were held to only two fast-break points.
Miami outscored Dallas 26-13 in the fourth quarter to cap the win.
"You have to give them credit," Nowitzki said. "They stepped up their pressure on both ends of the floor. In the first half everything came a little too easy for us. We got some good looks, got some rolls, had everything going. Then they really picked up their pressure and we didn't have many good looks."
It was Dallas' first time playing at Miami since winning Game 6 of the NBA finals last June, a series that turned after an epic late Game 2 comeback by the Mavs in Miami and eventually became the ultimate payback - hoisting a championship trophy in Miami, five years after Wade and the Heat celebrated winning their title in Dallas.
Still, Dallas insisted this trip wasn't about revisiting memories.
"Just another day at the office," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said.
Well, not an altogether friendly day at the office - particularly late.
In the fourth quarter alone, Nowitzki had the bridge of his nose bloodied, James got hit in the mouth and Wade spent a few minutes grabbing at his right index finger in obvious discomfort. Adding to Miami's discomfort: Dallas being within 90-83 with 4:37 left after Nowitzki made four free throws in a 27-second span.
Any angst existing at that point dissipated quickly.
"I felt like we were in control," Wade said. "They got a couple things to go their way. It was just about settling down and running offense."
Simple as that. A 9-0 run sealed it for Miami, with Wade quarterbacking the charge.
His two-handed dunk pushed the Heat lead back to double figures, then he found Bosh to set up a three-point play and set up James for a slam that pushed the lead to 99-83 with 3:03 left. The Mavs called time out, took Nowitzki and three others off the floor for the night, and the Heat slide was soon over.
Vince Carter and Brandan Wright each scored 11 for Dallas.
"It's tough," Carter said of facing the Heat. "When they're rolling, they're rolling."
Miami's offense has sputtered for nearly a month, but the Heat scored 60 points by halftime for the first time in 11 games. James, Bosh and Wade shot 12 for 21 by halftime, and Miami's bench - Haslem and Cole, mostly - connected on 10 of 13 shots before intermission. Haslem made all four of his shots in the half and Cole was 4 for 6 after making four shots in his last seven games.
Even with all that, the lead was only 60-53 at the break, in large part because Nowitzki was 8 for 10 from the field.
Miami's offense cooled big-time in the third, the Heat shooting an abysmal 5 for 23. And the lead actually grew by a point in the period, thanks to what went on at the other end.
An 11-2 run gave the Heat their first double-digit lead, after holding Dallas without a field goal for more than 6 minutes. Miami led by as many as 13 in the third, before Odom scored Dallas' final seven points of the period to get the Mavs within 80-72 going into the final quarter.
"It was disappointing," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "Our start to the third quarter was strong and then they answered back."
And now, Miami hits the road for games in Toronto on Friday and Boston on Sunday. The Heat have lost six of their last eight away from home.
"It's time for a response on the road," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We will take this win. This is a great team win against a very good team. But we have to move on and now let's take care of business on the road."

NOTES: Bosh returns to Toronto on Friday, the city where he played his first seven seasons.
... Dan Marino was among those in attendance.
... Miami held a 36-24 scoring edge in the second quarter, the first time the Heat outscored an opponent in their last 12 quarters.
... Mavs point guard Jason Kidd played in his 1,308th regular-season game, passing Buck Williams for 10th place on the NBA career list.
... Mavs guard Delonte West (broken right ring finger) played for the first time in 22 games. Center Brendan Haywood (sprained right knee) was active, but indicated he was more likely to return at Orlando on Friday. .
.. It marked the third time in Heat history that the team swept a season series with a reigning NBA champion."

Notebook: Heat 106, Mavs 85.
Posted by Shandel Richardson, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: The Miami Heat defeated the Dallas Mavericks 106-85 Thursday at AmericanAirlines Arena.

The win snapped the Heat's two-game losing streak, and completed a sweep of the season series against the Mavericks. LeBron James and Chris Bosh each scored 19 points to lead the Heat. Guard Dwyane Wade added 16 points and five assists.

The Heat bounced back from losses to Oklahoma City and Indiana. It was the first time they lost consecutive games by double-digits since signing James and Bosh in 2010. Miami rallied from a slow start to take control in the second quarter. They never trailed again after taking a 60-53 lead into halftime.

The Mavs fell victim to the Heat's smothering defense. Dallas was able to remain in the game behind their 3-point shooting (9-for-24), but shot just 42 percent from the field for the game. Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 25 points. The Mavs' remaining starters made 11-for-28 from the field.

QUOTABLE: "It was good to see that type of energy on both ends of the court ...It was much more to our style. Against this team [the Mavs], it never feels like they're out of it because of their ability to shoot the ball but we stayed the course. Like I said, there were a lot of contributions."- Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.

THE STAT: The Heat outrebounded the Mavericks 44-29. After being handled on the boards the past two games, Miami put together one of its best showings of the season.

TURNING POINT: After trailing by five at the end of the first quarter, the Heat outscored the Mavs 36-24 in the second. Miami shot 75 percent in the quarter.

QUOTABLE II: "We understand that it was only two losses. We can take that if we're losing the game that Miami Heat is accustomed to. It's just about getting back to what's been successful for us on both ends of the floor. I thought we were able to do that tonight."-- Dwyane Wade.

HOT: Despite this being the worst shooting season of his career, forward Udonis Haslem put together his best game of the year. He shot 6-for-10 from field, pouring in a season-high 16 points. He also made all four free-throw attempts.

NOT: Jason Terry shot just 1-for-10 from the field. Without his instant offense, the Mavs were lacking in the scoring department. The Terry who dominated the Heat in last year's NBA Finals was a no-show.

GOOD MOVE: The Heat got their best performance at point guard in quite some time. Mario Chalmers was effective as a scorer and facilitator. Rookie Norris Cole, coming off a poor three-game stretch, had his best game in recent weeks.

BAD MOVE: The Mavs had no answer for the Heat's Big Three of Bosh, Wade and James. When all are scoring, it makes Miami almost impossible to defend. Dallas was unable to key on anyone because they all were contributing.

NOTABLE: Heat swingman Mike Miller missed his ninth straight game with a sprained left ankle. Miller will not travel with the team for this weekend's two-game road trip. Mavericks guard Delonte West (finger) returned for the first time since Feb. 15. Center Brendan Haywood (knee) was active for the first time in six games.

UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Friday @ Orlando."

Mavericks-Magic Preview.
By JEFF BARTL.

"The Orlando Magic have lacked consistency over the last two weeks, experiencing blowout losses that are becoming all too familiar.

The Dallas Mavericks know the feeling.

Orlando seeks to avoid a sixth straight home loss to Dallas on Friday night in a matchup of teams coming off lopsided defeats.

The Magic (32-19) scored a season-high 117 points in a win over Toronto on Monday, but they followed with a 108-86 loss at New York on Wednesday that snapped their three-game winning streak.

Orlando has split its last eight games - all decided by double digits - with the four defeats coming by an average of 17.3 points.

It's been a similar story lately for Dallas (29-23), dropping three of its past five games with each loss coming by at least 16 points. The Mavericks fell 106-85 in Miami on Thursday and now make the short trip to Orlando looking to keep Dwight Howard in check, just as the Knicks did Wednesday.

Howard scored 12 points - his fewest in a game since the All-Star break - and his five rebounds were one off a season low.

He said the Magic can't pick and choose when they want to play hard if they plan to make a postseason run.

"It's the same thing I've been telling the guys: Our effort has to be consistent," Howard said. "If we want to win a championship every guy has to buy in to playing the right way every night. If we don't do that we're going to be sitting at home early (during the playoffs)."

Coach Stan Van Gundy also has been perplexed by the up-and-down performances given Orlando is in third place in the Eastern Conference. The Magic have scored fewer than 70 points four times, including a franchise-low 56 in a loss to Boston on Jan. 23 and most recently in an 85-59 defeat to Chicago on March 19.

"What is shocking to me is a team that is playing over .600 basketball can get absolutely rocked as many times as we have been - Boston, New Orleans (a 93-67 loss Jan. 27), Chicago and (Wednesday). That's what's mind-boggling to me," Van Gundy told the team's official website. "It will happen some if you are a bad team. But to be a .600 team and get crushed like that as many times as we have, that's shocking."

The Magic have lost five in a row at home to Dallas, with four coming by at least nine points. The exception was a 105-99 defeat Dec. 21, 2010, in the most recent meeting in Orlando.

The Mavericks, though, have lost nine of 11 away from home and have given up an average of 104.2 points over their last six road games. They're among the league leaders in points allowed at 93.3 per game.

Dallas was outscored 26-13 in the fourth quarter Thursday as Dirk Nowitzki missed all five of his field-goal attempts. Nowitzki, though, scored a game-high 25 points and is averaging 25.9 over his last nine games.

"We got some good looks, got some rolls, had everything going," Nowitzki said. "Then they really picked up their pressure and we didn't have many good looks."

An injured Nowitzki missed the last meeting as Orlando won 117-107 on Jan. 8, 2011, behind Howard's 23 points and 13 rebounds. Howard is averaging 30.0 points and 16.7 boards in his last three home games in the series."

Dallas Mavericks' Haywood denies he punched Superman.
By Dwain Price.
DALLAS--"Brendan Haywood believes Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy has created a new device that allegedly caught the Dallas Maverick center punching Magic center Dwight Howard in the back during last Friday's Mavs-Magic game.
On Saturday, Van Gundy accused Haywood of punching Howard in the back during the game, which the Mavs won, 100-98. It's a punch none of the game's three officials caught.
After reviewing the game's film, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle, general manager Donnie Nelson and Haywood all said they didn't see what Van Gundy claims he saw.
"I guess Stan has that magical hand-cam that he was taping from the bench and he's got something that nobody else has," Haywood said after Sunday's practice. "Stan will come out of the woodwork with anything.
"He's protecting his player, as he's supposed to do."
Van Gundy said he plans to send video of the alleged punch to the NBA offices in New York. If the league finds Haywood guilty, he likely will be fined and/or suspended without pay.
Like Haywood, Carlisle was particularly mystified concerning Van Gundy's story about Haywood landing a punch in Howard's lower back.
"We looked at some different things and just didn't see anything, other than there's some physical plays," Carlisle said. "But there wasn't a play where Howard flinched or anything."
Maybe not, but Howard didn't practice Saturday and didn't play in Sunday's 104-101 home loss to the Denver Nuggets because Van Gundy said he was suffering from back spasms related to the alleged punch by Haywood.
"I think Dwight caught me with more shots than I caught him," Haywood said. "He's the most physical player in the league."
Haywood isn't sure why Van Gundy would accuse him of punching another player.
"Dwight doesn't have a problem with me," Haywood said. "I don't have a problem with Dwight.
"So the only person that really has a problem is Stan. He'll probably just go to sleep and have a good Sunday."

Dallas Mavericks center mystified by accusation he punched Dwight Howard.
By Dwain Price Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

DALLAS—"Brendan Haywood all but laughed off accusations by Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy that the Dallas Mavericks’ center punched Magic center Dwight Howard in the back during Friday’s Mavs-Magic game.
"I watched it on NBA-TV (Saturday) night,’’ Haywood said after Sunday's practice. "(The Mavs’ coaches) said they looked over it and couldn’t find it.
"I guess Stan has that magical hand cam that he was taping from the bench and he’s got something that nobody else has.’’
Haywood said he was taken aback by what Van Gundy claims he did against Howard, who is generally regarded as the NBA’s most physical player.
"I think Dwight caught me with more shots than I caught him,’’ Haywood said. "He’s the most physical player in the league.
"Stan made his comment. I haven’t got a call from anybody, so I guess no one’s listening.’’
Haywood said whatever physical play happened Friday was just in the normal course of an NBA game. He added that he doesn’t have a beef with Howard, who had 19 points and 15 rebounds in 44 minutes against the Mavs.
"Dwight doesn’t have a problem with me,’’ Haywood said. "I don’t have a problem with Dwight. "So the only person that really has a problem is Stan. He’ll probably just go to sleep and have a good Sunday.’’
Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said he looked at the tape and also didn’t see anything out of the ordinary in regards to Van Gundy’s accusation.
"I’m not sure what play it was,’’ Carlisle said. "We looked at some different things and just didn’t see anything, other than there’s some physical plays.
"But there wasn’t a play where Howard flinched or anything, so I’m not sure.’’
Carlisle also said he’s not concerned if Haywood will be fined or suspended by the NBA.
Meanwhile, Van Gundy said he’ll send a tape of the alleged incident to the NBA, who probably will rule on it either Monday or Tuesday.
Asked if he was stunned by Van Gundy’s motives, Haywood said: "You can’t ever be stunned with Stan. You never know what Stan will hit you with.
"Stan will come out of the woodworks with anything. He’s protecting his player, as he’s supposed to do. You can’t say anything else about it.’’"

Odom sent home.
Lamar Odom showed up for practice Sunday, but was promptly sent home with a 102-degree fever.
It's the same fever that had Odom sluggish when he collected just two points and two rebounds while playing 13 minutes Friday against the Magic.
"He tried to play with a 102 fever, which was probably not a good idea," Rick Carlisle said. "But I loved the fact that he wanted to play."
Carlisle isn't sure if Odom will be able to play in tonight's 7:30 game against the los angeles Clippers at American Airlines Center.

Dirk clutch again.
That game-winning basket forward Dirk Nowitzki converted with 5.9 seconds left Friday in Orlando marked the 11th time in his career -- and second time this season -- he's made a basket in the last 10 seconds or less to win a game.
Nowitzki also beat the Boston Celtics on Jan. 11 when he broke an 85-85 tie with a three-point play with 5.1 seconds remaining in a 90-85 Mavs victory."

Back injury sidelines Magic's Howard.
By Sports Network.
"All-Star center Dwight Howard missed just the eighth game of his eight-year career Sunday because of a lower back strain, leaving Glen Davis to start at center for the Magic against the Nuggets.
Howard played 43 minutes in Friday's loss to the Mavericks, but was apparently battling through a back injury head coach Stan Van Gundy said originated from a phantom punch thrown by Dallas center Brendan Haywood during the game.
Evidence of the punch has yet to be uncovered.
Howard, the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, is averaging 20.9 points, 14.5 rebounds and 2.1 blocks this season for the Magic.
Davis made his second start of the season."

Mavericks finally avoid 3-point dagger against Magic.
By Dwain Price.

ORLANDO, Fla--"No one had to remind the Dallas Mavericks that they won a game Friday night in Orlando that they had no business winning.
Then again, the Mavs figured the law of averages were on their side during their 100-98 victory over the Orlando Magic at the Amway Center.
Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chauncey Billups of the Los Angeles Clippers and Derek Fisher -- with the los angeles lakers at the time -- all defeated the Mavs with 3-point shots in the waning seconds. Orlando's Hedo Turkoglu was vying to become the fourth player to burn the Mavs with a winning 3-pointer.
But Turkoglu's shot missed its mark and Ryan Anderson's ensuing layup attempt also failed to fall as the Mavericks made amends for Thursday's 106-85 loss in Miami with a huge confidence-builder against the Magic.
"Early in the season those 3's would have went down and we would have lost those games," Dirk Nowitzki said. "At least we're catching a little break."
After their fortunate win over the Magic, the Mavs (30-23) will also catch a break from the schedule-makers. Dallas has two days off -- a virtual vacation in this lockout-shortened season -- before it plays host to the Clippers on Monday."

Nowitzki jumper leads Mavericks past Magic, 100-98.
By KYLE HIGHTOWER.
ORLANDO, Fla.(AP)"There's something about playing on Orlando's floor lately that seems to bring out the best in the Dallas Mavericks.
Dirk Nowitzki banked in a 15-foot jumper over Hedo Turkoglu with 5.9 seconds as Dallas overcame a 15-point deficit to beat the Magic 100-98 on Friday night. It was the Mavericks' sixth straight victory in Orlando.
Dallas improved to just 2-19 this season when trailing entering the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks rallied in the final period, aided by a plethora of turnovers and missed shots by the Magic. Jason Terry had 10 points in the quarter and 17 in the game. Delonte West and Shawn Marion each added 15.
"We almost looked down a little bit," Nowitzki said. "Guys were putting their heads down. But we're a too good for that. We have to keep competing. I'm proud of the guys. D-West really changed the momentum of the game. And Jet (Terry) getting hot in there. Guys just battling for each other. That's what we've got to do."
Orlando shot 11 for 32 on 3-pointers, but had 16 turnovers, which led to 20 points for the Mavericks. Eight of those giveaways came in the final 14 minutes of the game and just after the Magic had taken their largest lead.
"Watching Orlando all year long we know that they're a team that has relinquished a lot of leads ... just the way they play," Terry said. "They're either going inside or they're shooting 3's. You live by the 3 or you die by it."
Jameer Nelson scored 24 points to lead Orlando. Ryan Anderson added 21, and Dwight Howard finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
The Magic had two chances to tie or win the game possession, but Turkoglu missed a jumper from the wing and Anderson's tip-in trickled off the back of the rim as time expired.
Orlando led by just seven entering the final period before the Mavericks, sparked by a surging Terry, tied it at 89 with 5:58 to play in the game.
The Magic helped Dallas get back into the game committing six of their 16 turnovers in the period.
Things got heated down the stretch as Nowitzki and Anderson went right at each other.
Anderson was called for a blocking foul guarding Nowitzki that drew the ire of Magic fans with 4 minutes left. But he gave Orlando a small cushion on the other end with an offensive rebound and put back to make it 95-91.
Dallas wasn't done, though.
A 3-pointer by West brought them to 97-96 and after a foul by Anderson, West's two free throws put the Mavericks on top.
A missed jumper by Nowitzki put the ball in Nelson's hands, and he was fouled going in for a layup on the other end. He only connected on one of his two ensuing free throws, though, giving the Mavericks their final shot with 25.1 remaining.
Howard seemed to lament the Magic's shot selection in the closing minutes.
"They did what they were supposed to do in the fourth quarter," Howard said. "They got a good shot every time. You don't have to be a championship caliber team to do that. You just have to understand that when you come down in the fourth quarter, you've got to get a good shot."
Brendan Haywood returned to the starting lineup after missing seven games with a right knee sprain and played 26 minutes. He only had five points, buts frustrated Howard throughout that time. Howard also was unable to capitalize on his trips to the free-throw line, going just 7 for 16. The Magic were 17 for 28 as a team.
The Magic were the more active team offensively early in the first half, taking their biggest lead at 32-19 in the opening minutes of the second quarter.
A 12-0 Mavericks run that featured seven points by Nowitzki got it down to a point before the Magic found their footing again and took it back up to double-digits. Orlando would up taking a nine-point edge into the locker room.
Nowitzki led all scorers with 18 in the half. Anderson topped the Magic with 12 points.
Mavericks' coach Rick Carlisle said the lasting feeling from Friday was the toughness team showed.
"We hung in there," Carlisle said. "We were down 15 and just chipped away. We showed a lot of fortitude, a lot of grit and lot of togetherness. We had some people step up."
Was it a championship-caliber performance?
"We've got work to do. We have lofty goals, but we've got 13 games to go and we've got a lot of improvement left," he said.

NOTES:
With Louisville and Kentucky set to meet in the Final Four on Saturday, Magic F Earl Cark, a former Cardinals standout, said he has full confidence in his underdog alma mater. But he didn't make any prop bets with teammates and former Wildcats Daniel Orton and DeAndre Liggins. "Nope. Straight cash," Clark said.
... Dallas coach Rick Carlisle received a technical foul in the second quarter. .
