MAVERICKS NOTES.
JET PASSES PEJA FOR FIFTH PLACE ON TRIPLES LIST: With his first 3-pointer of the game (1,761st career and 1,113th as a Maverick) at the 35.9-second mark of the first quarter against Portland on 4/6/12, Jason Terry passed former Maverick Peja Stojakovic (1,760) for fifth place on the NBA’s all-time 3-point field goals made list. Terry finished 4-of-9 from beyond the arc against the Blazers. He currently has 1,770 career 3-pointers. Clippers guard Chauncey Billups ranks fourth alltime in 3-pointers made with 1,783.
DIRK DELIVERS ANOTHER DAGGER:
Dirk Nowitzki hit the game-winning shot with 5.9 seconds left in the Mavericks’ 100-98 win over the Magic on 3/30/12. He drained a 15-foot fadeaway bank shot over the outstretched arms of Hedo Turkoglu to break a 98-98 tie. It marked the 11th time in his NBA career that Nowitzki made a game-winning basket in the final 10 seconds of a game, including the second time this season (he had a go-ahead layup with 5.1 seconds remaining at Boston on 1/11/12). Seven of Nowitzki’s 11 such buckets came on the road, including each of the last three. Nowitzki finished with a game-high 28 points in 37 minutes at Orlando (3/30/12).
13 CONSECUTIVE SEASONS WITH 1,000 POINTS FOR DIRK:
Dirk Nowitzki eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for the 2011-12 season in the first half at Miami on 3/29/12. He recorded his 13th consecutive season with 1,000-plus points (1999-00 to 2011-12), becoming one of 16 players in NBA history to accomplish the feat. Tim Duncan (14 straight seasons, 1997-98 to 2010-11) and Kobe Bryant (13 straight seasons, 1999-00 to 2011-12) are the only other active players that have scored at least 1,000 points 13 years in a row.
THE WRIGHT STUFF:
Mavericks big man Brandan Wright recorded a career-high seven blocked shots in the win at Houston on 3/24/12 (his previous high block total was four on two occasions: at Cleveland 2/4/12 and at New Orleans 3/22/09). He became the eighth player in Mavericks history to record seven blocks in a game and the first since Erick Dampier had seven vs. Chicago on 2/25/08. The others are Shawn Bradley, Oliver Miller, James Donaldson, Roy Tarpley, Herb Williams and Dirk Nowitzki. Wright recorded 14 points (7-9 FGs) and six boards to go along with his seven swats, which matched the block total posted by the entire Rockets’ team. Dallas managed seven-plus blocks as a team just 13 times in the 49 games prior to the game at Houston on 3/24/12. The Mavericks finished with a
season-high 15 rejections against the Rockets. It was the first time the Mavericks recorded 15 blocks in a game since 1/29/05 (15 vs. Philadelphia).
TERRY’S 1,000TH GAME:
Jason Terry appeared in his 1,000th career regular-season game at Golden State on 3/10/12, becoming the 102nd player in NBA history to reach the milestone. The 6-2, 180-pound guard from Arizona has proven to be very durable since he came into the league in 1999. Terry, who is in his 13th season, has missed just 27 games over the course of his NBA career. He has appeared in an additional 83 playoff games (45 starts) during his 12-plus seasons in the league. Terry became the second Maverick to reach the milestone this season (Dirk Nowitzki appeared in his 1,000th career regular-season game vs. Phoenix on 1/4/12).
NOWITZKI RECORDS 1,000TH BLOCK:
Dirk Nowitzki recorded his 1,000th career block against Boston on 2/20/12, with an emphatic rejection on an Avery Bradley shot attempt at the 9:30 mark of the first quarter. Nowitzki, who entered the game with 1,220 career 3-pointers, became one of only three players in NBA history with at least 1,000 3-pointers and 1,000 blocks, joining Clifford Robinson (1,253 threes and 1,390 blocks) and Rasheed Wallace (1,064 threes and 1,445 blocks). Nowitzki became the 80th player in NBA history to reach 1,000 blocks. His teammate, Brendan Haywood, was the last player to join the 1,000-block club (at Minnesota 1/1/12) before Nowitzki reached the milestone. Nowitzki became the only player in NBA history to record at least 150 3-pointers and 100 blocks in a single season in 2000-01 (151 threes, 101 blocks). He was also just the second player in NBA history to record 100-plus threes and 100-plus blocks in one season (Robert Horry had 143 threes and 109 blocks with Houston in 1995-96). Nowitzki ranks second on Dallas’ all-time blocks list behind Shawn Bradley (1,250).
KIDD PASSES MJ FOR SECOND PLACE ON STEALS LIST:
Jason Kidd passed Michael Jordan (2,514) for second place on the NBA’s all-time steals list against Boston on 2/20/12 with his first steal of the game (2,515th career) at the 5:59 mark of the second quarter (he intercepted a pass thrown by Ray Allen). John Stockton is the NBA’s all-time steals leader with 3,265 career thefts. Kidd recorded a season-high six steals in his return to the starting lineup against Sacramento (1/14/12), after missing four games with a sore lower back (1/7/12-1/13/12). Kidd has been named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team four times (1999, 2001, 2002, 2006) and NBA All-Defensive Second Team five times in his career (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007).
STILL SEEING DOUBLE:
Of the active players in the NBA who have tallied the most double-doubles in their careers, the Mavericks have three players that rank in the top 10. Jason Kidd’s 486 career double-doubles rank third among active players, Shawn Marion’s 402 rank sixth and Dirk Nowitzki’s 368 rank eighth. Kidd ranks first among active players and third all-time (behind Oscar Robertson, 181, and Magic Johnson, 138) with 107 career triple-doubles.
DIRK’S 11TH CONSECUTIVE ALL-STAR APPEARANCE:
For the 11th consecutive season, Dirk Nowitzki represented the Western Conference at the 2012 All-Star Game held in Orlando, Fla. His 11 All-Star selections are the most by any player in franchise history and his run of 11 straight appearances is the second-longest active streak in the NBA (Kobe Bryant has made 14 straight All-Star appearances). Nowitzki, who appeared as a Western Conference reserve in the 2012 All-Star Game, contributed seven points and four rebounds in 14 minutes as the West defeated the East, 152-149. Nowitzki holds averages of 9.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 18.4 minutes in 11 career All-Star games (two starts). He posted a career-high 22 points (8-15 FGs, 6-6 FTs) in the 2010 All-Star Game held in Dallas.
NOWITZKI 19TH PLACE ON ALL-TIME SCORING LIST:
Dirk Nowitzki scored his 23,000th career point against Milwaukee on 1/13/12 with his first free throw at the 7:17 mark of the second quarter. He became the 23rd player in NBA history (third active player) to achieve the milestone. He moved past Elgin Baylor (23,149) and into 22nd place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list at Cleveland (2/4/12) with a 17-foot fadeaway at the 7:37 mark of the fourth quarter. In his next game at Denver on 2/8/12, he scored a game-high 25 points and passed Adrian Dantley (23,177) for 21st place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with a jumper at the 1:36 mark of the 4th quarter. Nowitzki moved past former Celtic Robert Parish (23,334) and into 20th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list against Boston on 2/20/12, with a three-point play at the 5:55 mark of the first quarter. He hit a 14-foot jumper (assisted by Jason Kidd) and was fouled by Chris Wilcox on the shot attempt. Nowitzki connected on the free throw, giving him his seventh point of the game (23,335th career). Nowitzki scored a game-high 31 points at Houston on 3/24/12 and passed Charles Barkley (23,757) for 19th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. He made a pair of free throws with 18.5 seconds left in overtime that
gave him 31 points for the game (23,758 for his career), the exact point total he needed to pass Barkley going into the game. Nowitzki currently has 23,929 career points. He ranks third among active players in career scoring, trailing only Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett. Only three other players born outside of the United States
have more career points than the 7-footer from Germany: Hakeem Olajuwon (26,946, born in Nigeria), Dominique Wilkins (26,668, born in France) and Patrick Ewing (24,815, born in Jamaica). Nowitzki reached the 20,000-point mark during the 2009-10 season, becoming the first European-born player to achieve the milestone."
DIRK RECORDS 8,000TH CAREER FIELD GOAL:
With a 10-foot step-back jumper (at the 7:40 mark of the second quarter) against Oklahoma City on 1/2/12, Dirk
Nowitzki recorded his 8,000th career regular-season made field goal. He became the 31st player in NBA history to accomplish the feat and he currently ranks fourth among active players in field goals made (behind kobe bryant, Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan).
THREE STREAK:
The game vs. Memphis on 3/6/11 marked Dallas’ 1,000th straight game with at least one 3-point basket. Since 2/27/99, the Mavericks have gone 1,078 consecutive regular-season games with a 3-pointer made – the longest streak in NBA history. They’ve made only one trey in a game 15 times in that span. The Raptors went 986 consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer made, but had their streak (which began on 2/26/99) come to an end vs. Memphis on 1/24/11.
A KIDD AT HEART:
Jason Kidd ranks first among active players with 1,310 games played. He passed Buck Williams (1,307) for 10th place on the NBA’s all-time list for games played at Miami on 3/29/12. The 18-year veteran has started 1,297 of the 1,310 games he has appeared in over the course of his NBA career.

CENTURY MARK SUCCESS:
The Mavericks are 17-1 this season when they score at least 100 points in a game, including 4-0 when they score 110-plus points. The only time the Mavericks have lost when they scored100-plus points in a game this year was at Oklahoma City on 12/29/11. Kevin Durant hit a last-second 3-pointer to defeat Dallas 104-102. The Mavericks were 43-4 (.915) when they scored 100-plus points in 2010-11, including 13-1 (.929) when they recorded 110-plus
points in a game. They were 35-7 (.833) when they scored at least 100 points in a game in 2009-10, and 34-11 (.756) when they did so in 2008-09.
HOLDING TEAMS UNDER 100:
Only 13 teams have scored 100 points against the Mavericks this season (includes four overtime games). The Mavericks are 29-16 on the season when they hold the opposition to under 100 points. Dallas held teams under the century mark 54 times last year (41-13 record). The Mavericks held their opponents to under 100 points for 10 straight games from 1/30-2/17/12, going 7-3 in that span. The Mavericks also held their opponents to under 100 points for 15 straight games from 12/30/11-1/23/12, which set a franchise record for consecutive games holding teams under the century mark (was 13, 1/14/06-2/9/06). Opponents averaged just 84.3 points per game on 39.8 percent shooting against the Mavericks in those 15 games, and Dallas went 11-4 in that span. The Mavericks
held their opponents to under 80 points in three straight games during that stretch from 1/13-1/16/12. The Timberwolves ended the Mavericks’ run when they defeated Dallas, 105-90, at American Airlines Center on 1/25/12. Minnesota was also the only team to score over 93 points against the Mavericks during their 15-game run (defeated Dallas, 99-82, at Minnesota on 1/1/12).
BENCH PRODUCTION:
The Mavericks are averaging 40.6 points per game off the bench this season, which ranks third in the NBA behind Denver’s 41.7 bench points per game and Philadelphia’s 40.9 bench points per contest. Jason Terry has led the Mavericks in scoring 11 times as a reserve this season (including ties). Dallas led the NBA in bench scoring in 2010-11 with 40.4 points per game off the pine.
DEFENSIVE NUMBERS:
The Mavericks rank in the top 10 in several defensive categories including points allowed, opponent field goal percentage, steals per game and opponent points in the paint. The Mavericks have never finished a season ranked higher than fourth in opponent field goal percentage (4th in 2007-08 with .443, T-4th in 1987-88 with .470). Dallas has also never ended a season ranked higher than fourth in steals (4th in 2004-05 with 8.63 spg) or points allowed (4th in 2006-07 with 92.8 ppg, 4th in 1989-90 with 102.2 ppg, 4th in 1988-89 with 104.7 ppg).

20,000 MANIAACS:
The season-opener versus Miami on 12/25/11 marked the Mavericks’ 400th consecutive sellout. Since 12/15/01, Dallas has sold out 430 regular-season home games, which is an NBA-best-sellout streak. Dallas has also sold out an additional 58 playoff games during that same stretch. The listed capacity for American Airlines Center is 19,200 but that can be surpassed because of attendance in the suites. Since moving into American Airlines."

Bynum opened the first half shooting at a four-of-13 clip. He even had a shot blocked by Shawn Marion. And he appeared incredibly slow moving up and down the floor.
Credit Bynum for fighting through it, though. His team-leading 23 points on nine-of-23 shooting included a bounce-back second half in which he showed more energy posting up, fought for more rebounds and didn't appear as frustrated. There were some rough moments, such as when he gave up an an open layup to West and when he missed one of his free throws in the final minute. But he didn't allow his illness to derail his effort level."

Dallas Mavericks @

"What the Dallas Mavericks and the
Quotes
Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle
(On Andrew Bynum continuing to have big games against the Mavs) "We had him one for eight in the first quarter, that was a good sign. Then as the game wore on we didn’t do as good a job. We have got to do better. He didn’t have a lot of free looks. He threw in a lot of shots with guys draped on him and we did make some mistakes. But we battled hard. We didn’t make enough shots, we didn’t get enough stops."
(On Andrew Bynum's Game) "Andrew Bynum is a great inside player so he affects the game a lot of different ways. He checks the game when you got a double team, he kicks it out and now brings threes and rebounding on the court."
(On Dirk Nowitzki’s game today) "He had some opportunities that he missed. We have got to get him some better looks. Nine for twenty-eight is not a Dirk Nowitzki night."
(On playing the
(On the
(On Barnes Goaltend on Gasol's first Three in OT) "It was a goaltend that was missed. And we had a one-point lead at that time, so it’s a big play. I don’t know what to say about that. They’ll see that in black and white in New York."
(On Terry's late blunder) "It was a pick and roll with Dirk and Terry and we need to make play. So he drove and I haven’t seen the replay of it, but it didn’t work out, so that’s disappointing."
(Conclude in 3, 2, 1...) "We did a lot of good things, but then we got unlucky with a couple haymaker shots and a goaltending that was allowed and some other stuff. Sometimes that’s the way that it goes. We’ve gotta pack up and get ready for the next game. It’s as simply as that."
Dirk Nowitzki
(On the loss) "We fought. You have to give them credit. They made some great plays. They got some lucky bounces especially in overtime. We had our chances I thought in the end of regulation. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen your way."
(On his shooting) "My fourth shot was an airball out of the corner where I was wide open. Just had a rough night, shake it off, got a big one tomorrow, four games in five nights and Utah is a tough place to play, so we’ve got to be ready."
(On his offensive play tonight) "I’ve just got to make some shots. Tonight I was more of a volume shooter and that’s not how I want to play. I want to be an efficient scorer, so I got some work to do. The good thing is before the playoffs we only have one game and we have four days off where I can work on my game and hopefully be right when the playoffs start."
(On Delonte West) "Delonte being out five or six weeks (with a fractured right ring ringer) really hurt us. You’ve seen what he can do coming off screen-and-rolls. I think that gives us another scorer, another option, and he was phenomenal tonight."
(On Metta World Peace) "He was phenomenal. He’s stepped up since
(On Brandan Wrights limited time) "He's a little light in the pants. Bynum's got him by about 40 pounds."
(On allowing 15 offensive rebounds) "They’re tough. I think they’re number one in the league. They’ve got a bunch of big guys. Gasol is obviously long, Artest is coming every time, and Barnes is a great offensive rebounder, so they’ve got basically four guys coming in there every time. We played some small ball with West, Kidd, and Jet and obviously that’s not a great rebounding lineup."
(On Barnes' Goaltend) "I don’t really know what happened. It looked like he touched the ball to me, but you never know. Everything goes so quick, and they counted it as a three, so that was a tough one."
(On playing
Jason Terry
(On the Loss) "We didn’t as a team collectively make enough plays throughout the ball game. Usually when the shot clock is winding down, those balls don’t go in. For some reason or another, this season they have. It was a big game. All of these games have tremendous meaning for us."
(On concerns about the road woes going forward) "Not at all. The regular season is going to have no meaning on what the playoffs will mean. Obviously you can blame it on the schedule. Every team has gone through it, but it's not as what it would be in a regular season."
(On his last drive in overtime) "Just misread the whole play.
You can't do that. I got caught under the basket. I saw a clear lane to the basket. There was some misfortune there not going strong enough to the basket. Barnes did an excellent job of getting out of the way. I thought he was going to try to take a charge or go for a hard foul and he did neither. Give him credit and I’ll take the blame for that one. I command and ask for the ball in that situation, and to not be able to deliver for the team is an utter disappointment. Give Barnes credit, it was a savvy defensive play, but if I do it again, I know what kind of play I'm going to make."
(On what the team needs to do moving forward) "We need to maintain our level of play right now and get into the playoffs as the sixth seed. Consistently we’re coming out and giving a great effort. We’re fighting on both ends of the floor. Tonight was a big disappointment but you have to get over it quick because we’ve got Utah tomorrow, which isn't that bad of a city anymore now. Nevermind."
Shawn Marion
(On Sessions) "He's good. Oh my God, what he was doing out there, he's been doing some good things for them, making it tough for guys. He's been doing a great job."
Brendan Haywood
(On Andrew Bynum) "He’s definitely a good player, but like you saw tonight, he got 24 shots. When you get that many shots, it puts you in a position to have a lot of good nights, a lot of opportunities. His game has come a long way. He’s a tough matchup for anybody. Again, he’s developed, he’s gotten better and better every year."
(On possibly playing the
(On the Game) "That was one heck of a game. It was probably very entertaining for you guys, and for the people at home, and it was entertaining for us because we got the win. I thought our guys did a lot of good things. First thing we did defensively, you know, Dallas is a very good offensive team and they shoot the ball very well, and they spread you out very well, and Rick [Carlisle] does a great job of mixing the sets and playing to the team’s strengths. They hit a lot of threes, they hit threes early on, they hit some shots in transitions because our transition defense wasn’t good. I thought our guys just stayed composed, they still tried to continue to execute at the tempo that we want them to. Nobody ever really panicked or anything like that. It was great to see, especially with the way that they were shooting the basketball. And then our guys, time and time again hit big shots."
(On the
(On playing sans bryant) "The first thing is we’ve done a better job understanding tempo. Before, when kobe was playing, with him being on the floor, we started playing a little too fast. He can himself, even though he’s not the point guard, he can subtly effect the tempo of the game by running to the block. When he runs to the block, obviously he’s a pretty dominating factor out on the floor. So our guys are going to try and get him the ball, and when they get him the ball it just kind of brings everything to a stop to a certain degree. Having him on the floor helped us control the pace of the game a lot of times. Without him on the floor, we had to kind of find out how to do that on our own. And it started in the Phoenix game where we didn’t do a good job of that. We got into a rat race of a game with them, and they won the game. But, the great thing about that is that he helped us, we felt like we helped the players and the players helped each other. And we learned from that game in terms of how we can do a better job of controlling the pace when he’s not on the floor. For me that’s probably one of the biggest things we’ve gotten from his absence so far. Then you can go into the confidence factor, you can go into guys stepping up at different parts of the game, doing big things for us, and so on and so forth."
Matt Barnes
(On JET's last play) "Terry always likes to put his leg out and kick you and then go a little higher and get the and-1, so I kind of moved inside and just tried to block it and he just ran out of real estate."
(On sweeping the Mavericks) "We still have that bitter taste in our mouth. We'll definitely take a sweep in the playoffs over a sweep in the regular season, so we know these games don't really mean too much because if we get a chance to see them in the playoffs, that's when it matters."
Andrew Bynum
(On the Win) "We had opportunities to win earlier with a stop. We had a bunch of opportunities to win. I missed one of the free throws that would have put us up by three. We just kept on going. We didn’t stop. We didn’t let one mishap keep us from going on to the next play."
(On assistant
(On Defense) "Defensively I was trying to contest shots. They made a couple at the top but for the most part we had guys who had air balls and guys get rebounds. Defensively I can be big help to this team and that’s one of my focuses."
Pau Gasol
(On Threes) "The first one, you can’t really practice that shot. I just tried to get it off my hands and it worked out well. The second one was a much better look and much better rhythm and it went in too. Obviously it’s not a shot I take very often, but I have taken a few more this year than I have in my career. I’ve worked on it and it works out sometimes."
(On how he felt after hitting the two 3-pointers) "I’m glad I was able to hit them. Prior to that, I wasn’t shooting the ball well. I’m glad I got it going at that particular time in the game because we needed every basket."
(On the importance of the win today) "It’s important to beat every team at this point of the year. This team eliminated us last year and they’re the champs right now. It was a good quality win for us. If we face them again, I don’t know if this 4-0 in the regular season will be worth a whole lot. But we’ll have to start over and take it one game at a time and make sure we play as hard as we’ve been playing lately."
(On Metta World Peace) "He’s been aggressive. Just like Andrew and myself, we feel we have to step up in Kobe’s absence. We’re active, aggressive and we’re getting into better rhythms. That’s what he’s been doing."
(On his thoughts regarding Nowitzki’s poor shooting game) "He had some looks. Some were well defended, some were wide open and didn’t go in. I think we did a pretty good job as a team covering him."
Ramon Sessions
(On the Game) "It felt good. It was one for those games where we played really hard and grinded it out. To get the win like that was a great feeling for us."
(On Pau Gasol’s back to back 3 pointers) "That was huge. Big fella can knock down those corner three’s. He practices them a lot. It was one of those things where he had two huge three’s for us that gave us that momentum to get the lead."

PORTLAND, Ore.(AP)"The Dallas Mavericks built a big lead and then withstood the Portland Trail Blazers' furious comeback attempt in the fourth quarter.
Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points and nine rebounds, Delonte West added 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Mavericks nearly lost a 24-point lead in a 97-94 win over Portland on Friday night.
"We took care of business early, and gave ourselves a little margin for error," Jason Terry said. "In the end we finished the game."
Shawn Marion had 17 points and 14 rebounds for defending champion Dallas, which has a 1 1/2-game lead over Denver and Houston for the sixth playoff spot in the Western Conference. Brandan Wright added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Nicolas Batum had 20 to lead the Blazers, Jamal Crawford scored 18 and Wesley Matthews had 15 points and seven rebounds.
"I think the Mavericks won the game," Portland interim coach Kaleb Canales said. "I don't think we gave them the game."
The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead and held Portland at a comfortable distance for 3 1/2 quarters. Dallas was up by 24 points in the third and 16 points with less than four minutes to go in the game.
However, Portland was not dead. The Blazers suddenly put together a 12-0 run to pull to 93-89 and had the Rose Garden rocking with less than a minute left.
"This team doesn't quit," Nowitzki said of the Blazers. "Their fans are unbelievable. They get into the game like no other crowd in the NBA. The Blazers feed off their crowd. They got going and got back into the game."
But Nowitzki, who had scored just five points in the second half, rose to the occasion, too. He drew a foul and then knocked in two free throws. Wright finished a fast break with a dunk to put the game away.
Matthews made a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Coming off a win at Golden State on Thursday night, the Mavericks have won the first two on their four-game road trip. With the playoffs approaching, Dallas' 39-year-old point guard Jason Kidd was inactive for the game to give him a rest.
Portland's playoff hopes have all but evaporated after the team announced on Thursday that All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge would need arthroscopic surgery on his hip and would be shut down for the rest of the season. Aldridge was eighth in the league in scoring at 21.7 points per game. J.J. Hickson started in place of Aldridge for the second straight game and had 13 points and 10 rebounds, his third double-double in three games.
Dallas jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held a 30-16 advantage after the first quarter. West scored to make it 38-18 early in the second. Batum scored 10 points in short order, keying a 21-7 Portland run to cut the lead to 45-39, but the Mavericks closed out the half with their own 11-2 run.
Dallas opened up the third on another run and eventually led 79-55.
NOTES:
The Mavericks have held opponents to 100 points or fewer in all but 14 games this season.
... Portland finishes its regular-season home schedule on Wednesday. The Blazers are 20-12 at the Rose Garden this season.
... It was the Mavericks' first visit to Portland since Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs last year, which Dallas won to clinch the series en route to the NBA championship."

Notebook: Mavericks 97, Trail Blazers 94.
Posted By Kerry Eggers, for NBA.com.
"THE FACTS:
Dirk Nowitzki scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the first half and Dallas held off a late Portland surge to win 97-94 Friday night at the Rose Garden.
Delonte West added 21 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals for the Mavericks (34-26), who led by 20 points in the second quarter and by 24 late in the third period.
Nicolas Batum collected 20 points and eight rebounds and Jamal Crawford chipped in 18 points off the bench for the Trail Blazers (28-32).
QUOTABLE:
"You have to give (the Blazers) credit -- they are persistent. We made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes, but we survived it." -- Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle.
THE STAT:
Dallas won the rebound battle 51-38, including 30-20 in the first half. That helped the Mavericks survive 21 turnovers that turned into 30 Portland points.
TURNING POINT:
The opening tip. Dallas jumped to a 9-0 lead, extended it to 30-16 after one quarter and 38-18 early in the second period. The Blazers outscored the visitors 33-16 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late.
HOT:
Shawn Marion knocked down 8 of 10 shots -- including his only 3-point attempt -- en route to a 17-point, 14-rebound performance.
NOT:
Dallas' Jason Terry missed his first eight shots from the field and finished 3-for-16. Terry was 0-for-5 in the first quarter, the rest of the Mavericks 13-for-18.
QUOTABLE II: "Down 24 points to the defending champs ... I'm extremely proud and pleased of the effort our guys showed out there, especially down the stretch."-- Portland head coach Kaleb Canales.
INSIDE THE ARENA:
The crowd announced at 20,304 was the 191st straight Rose Garden sellout for the Blazers dating to December 2007.
GOOD MOVE:
With Portland power forward LaMarcus Aldridge out for the season with a hip injury, the Mavericks focused defensively on J.J. Hickson inside. Hickson finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds but was only 5 -or-12 from the field.
BAD MOVE:
With the Blazers still in striking distance in the closing seconds but needing a 3-pointer, Crawford took a rebound and went to the basket for a layup that the Mavericks gladly conceded.
QUOTABLE III:
"Right now, you just have to pile up 'W's.' I don't care how you get them; you just have to get them." -- Marion.
NOTABLE:
Crawford, who leads the NBA in free-throw percentage at .935, was 6-for-6 at the line to extend his consecutive streak to 36.
UP NEXT:
For the Trail Blazers, @ Sacramento Sunday.
For the Mavericks, @ L.A. Lakers Sunday."

kobe-less lakers hold off Mavs in overtime 112-108
By GREG BEACHAM.
LOS ANGELES(AP)"Sure, Pau Gasol and the los angeles lakers are well aware a regular-season sweep means nothing compared to a playoff sweep.
The lakers are still pleased they're controlling this rivalry with the Dallas Mavericks heading to another postseason in which they just might meet again - and they even did it without kobe bryant.
Andrew Bynum had 23 points and 16 rebounds, Gasol made back-to-back 3-pointers in overtime, and the lakers won their fourth straight game without the NBA's leading scorer, 112-108 over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.
Ramon Sessions scored 22 points, and Gasol had 20 points and 10 rebounds as los angeles rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit before finishing off a four-game season sweep of the defending champion Mavericks, who swept the two-time champion lakers out of last season's playoffs.
"This team eliminated us last year, and they're the champs right now," said Gasol, who buried his sixth and seventh 3-pointers of the season in OT. "If we face them again, I don't know if this 4-0 in the regular season will be worth a whole lot. We'll have to start over and make sure we play as hard as we've been playing lately."
Coach Mike Brown thought the lakers put together a remarkable team effort in bryant's absence, with everybody on the floor in overtime contributing a key play. Matt Barnes' cagey defense capped the OT effort against Jason Terry, who missed what should have been an easy tying layup with 5 seconds left.
With the lakers holding the No. 3 spot in the West playoff picture and the Mavs at No. 6, both teams realize they could meet again in two weeks. The lakers boosted their lead over the Clippers atop the Pacific Division to 1 1/2 games with six to play. The lakers also have the tiebreaker edge on their next-door rivals.
"We're excited about the playoffs, but we're still going to have that bitter taste in our mouths until then," Barnes said.
Barnes had 11 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and los angeles' key defensive play, and Metta World Peace scored 18 points for the Lakers, who are 4-1 while Bryant rests his bruised shin. bryant is still contributing to the lakers by shouting out instruction and encouragement from the bench, but his teammates are figuring out how to win when they can't count on Kobe to take the big shot.
"Metta, Andrew, myself, we all feel we have to step up in kobe's absence," Gasol said. "A different guy can do it every game."
Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points on 9-of-28 shooting and 14 rebounds for the Mavericks, whose three-game winning streak ended. Delonte West scored 20 points, and Terry had 21 before overthinking his drive and jamming a layup into the underside of the rim while trying to avoid Barnes' defense.
"I solely take the blame for it," Terry said. "I command and ask for the ball in that situation, and to not be able to deliver for the team is an utter disappointment. ... Give (Barnes) credit, it was a savvy defensive play, but if I do it again, I know what kind of play I'm going to make."
Gasol added two free throws with 0.5 seconds left in the lakers' fifth straight regular-season win over Dallas.
Both teams had chances to win near the regulation buzzer, but Sessions missed an awkward shot with 1.5 seconds to play, and Nowitzki clanged a 3-point attempt off the back rim.
While the Mavericks claimed Barnes goaltended one of the lakers' overtime baskets, they also blamed themselves for a middling effort.
"I just have to make some shots," said Nowitzki, an unimpressive 36 for 95 over his last five games. "I was more of a volume shooter, and that's not the way I want to play. I want to be an efficient scorer. I've got some work to do."
Gasol gave the lead back to the lakers on consecutive corner 3's, with Nowitzki's third 3-pointer sandwiched between them. World Peace put the lakers up 110-106 with a fadeaway jumper with 1:04 to play.
Bynum has been fighting a respiratory infection, but coach Mike Brown described him as "an absolute beast" against Dallas. After a slow start in the first half, Bynum returned to the dominant form he showed while getting 30 rebounds and scoring 30 points in consecutive games, a feat last accomplished by Moses Malone in 1982.
During a midgame interview with ABC, bryant said his shin feels much better, and he intends to return to the lakers well before the playoffs. bryant is walking without discomfort, but the 28.1-points-per-game All-Star hasn't played since April 6.
bryant has missed just 100 games in his 16-season NBA career, including the past five. If bryant plans to return soon, los angeles has just five games remaining, including Tuesday's visit from San Antonio, before the postseason.
"That's coach bryant now," Sessions said. "He's over there drawing stuff up on the board. He's pulling us over to the side and helping us out tremendously."
NOTES:
Lamar Odom is still listed on the Mavericks' roster, but the longtime Lakers forward won't play again this season for Dallas, which acquired him early in training camp after the Lakers' aborted trade for Chris Paul hurt Odom's feelings.
...Dallas' Jason Kidd went 3 for 4 on 3-pointers after going 0 for 8 in Dallas' previous visit to Staples Center this season."

The opening quarter was anything but a display of effective front-court play. Nowitzki missed his first seven field-goal attempts before finding his shot in spurts. He still finished 9-for-28 from the floor with 24 points and 14 rebounds. In the four-game sweep by the lakers this season, Nowitzi was a combined 36-for-90 (40 percent).

Dallas guard Delonte West was the best player on the floor during the first half, scoring 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting.

<span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span>-Jazz Preview.<br />
By BRETT HUSTON.<br />
<br />
"After a close loss against a team they've been unable to beat this season, the <span style="color: #004000">Dallas Mavericks</span> will try to bounce back against an opponent to which they seemingly can't lose.<br />
<br />
If that's the case again Monday, the Utah Jazz can probably start making plans for the offseason.<br />
<br />
The <span style="color: #004000">visiting Mavericks </span>look for an<span style="color: #ff0000"> eighth consecutive victory over the Jazz</span> on Monday night, while Utah needs to get back on track in a hurry if it hopes to salvage any playoff hopes.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Dallas </span>(<span style="color: #ff0000">34-27</span>) had an excellent opportunity Sunday to avoid a season sweep against the los angeles lakers - <span style="color: #ff0000">its potential first-round opponent</span> - but couldn't take advantage of kobe bryant's absence. <span style="color: #004000">Dirk Nowitzki</span> had 24 points and 14 rebounds but missed 19 of his season-high 28 shots in a <span style="color: #ff0000">112-108 overtime</span> loss at Staples Center<br />
<br />
"I just have to make some shots," said Nowitzki, shooting 37.9 percent over his last five games. "I was more of a volume shooter, and that's not the way I want to play. I want to be an efficient scorer. I've got some work to do."<br />
<br />
The <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> are <span style="color: #ff0000">19-21</span> this season when Nowitzki attempts 15 or more field goals and 12-5 when he takes 14 or fewer.<br />
<br />
He took way more than 15 the last time Dallas and Utah got together, but had one of his best games in recent memory. Nowitzki made 14 of 21 shots and finished with a season-high 40 points in less than 29 minutes of a 102-96 home win March 3.<br />
<br />
Nowitzki has generally been a model of efficiency against the Jazz (<span style="color: #ff0000">31-30</span>), shooting 61.1 percent while participating in six of the Mavs' seven straight wins in the series.<br />
<br />
If Utah can't contain him Monday, it might find itself on the verge of elimination. The Jazz are in 10th in the Western Conference, one-half game behind ninth-place Phoenix and 1 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot.<br />
<br />
Utah trails No. 8 seed Houston by two games in the loss column, but would own the tiebreaker should it finish with an identical record.<br />
<br />
It would lose a head-to-head tiebreaker with Phoenix.<br />
<br />
The Jazz won't have to worry about any sort of contingencies if they can't get some stops. After holding the Rockets to 35.6 percent shooting in a crucial road win Wednesday, Utah let New Orleans and Memphis shoot a combined 51.8 percent in losses to conclude their trip.<br />
<br />
"We know it's going to take a lot of hard work at first, then it is going to take focus," Paul Millsap said after the Jazz blew a six-point fourth-quarter lead in Saturday's 103-98 loss to the Grizzlies. "We have to have focus, and we have to stick to what we do for 48 minutes. In the past, we haven't been doing that, and it's costing us right now."<br />
<br />
Devin Harris had a team high-tying 20 points Saturday but he's done next to nothing against his former team since arriving in Utah. The point guard has averaged 6.0 points on 30.4 percent shooting against Dallas this season.<br />
<br />
The <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks </span><span style="color: #ff0000">have shot 51.8 percent from the field during their win streak against Utah</span>, <span style="color: #ff0000">making 64 3-pointers to just 27 - on 98 attempts - by the Jazz</span>."<br />

Rapid Reaction: Jazz 123, Mavs 121 (3 OT).
By Jeff Caplan | ESPNDallas.com.
SALT LAKE CITY--"How it happened:
One of the Mavericks' more uninspired performances through 3 1/2 quarters turned into an incredible exhibition of perseverance in Utah.
The Mavs rallied from an 81-72 hole in the final five minutes of regulation as Dirk Nowitzki finally got some help. The previously ice-cold Jason Terry knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, and Vince Carter hit two gargantuan late bombs, one from the corner to get Dallas within one point, 87-86, and then from the right wing for an 89-87 lead with 8.5 seconds to go.
Paul Millsap forced overtime with a slam dunk putback after Gordon Hayward forced up an off-balance prayer from the baseline.
Both teams hit big shots in the first two overtimes, with Nowitzki hitting the game-tying 3-pointer in the first OT to give him 38 points and force a second overtime, but only after Al Jefferson narrowly missed a putback attempt to win it at the buzzer.
The overtime periods were filled with haymakers as the teams took turns taking the lead, only to have the momentum stolen right back.
For most of regulation, it was the Dirk show for Dallas. He had 20 of the team's 42 points at the half, while Carter was next in line with 12. The supporting cast finally got into the game in the nick of time to save this one from certain defeat.
The Mavs rolled with the same five throughout the first two overtimes with Terry, Jason Kidd, Carter, Nowitzki and Ian Mahinmi. For the third, Carlisle opted to sit Kidd, who logged 46 minutes after going 39 on Sunday at the lakers, for Delonte West, whose strange first-half finger-jab to the head of Gordon Hayward seemed eons ago.
Fatigue finally seemed to take hold of the Mavs in the third overtime. While the shots started caroming off the rim, the Jazz kept hitting big ones, and the biggest rained down from the hands of Devin Harris, with his fifth from downtown giving Utah a 118-115 lead. Nowitzki missed a 3 at the other end, and Jefferson scored for a 120-115 lead.
West, the lone Mav with fresh legs after playing just 22 minutes in regulation, drained a straightaway 3 to make it 120-118. Then wouldn't you know, the Jazz sealed it with a flying offensive rebound from little-known DeMarre Carroll. His board set up Millsap inside, where Nowitzki had no choice but to foul. However, Millsap kept the door open by missing the second free throw with 14.9 to go for a 121-118 lead.
Terry's 3-pointer to tie was on line but short. Dallas retained possession under its own basket. An absolutely exhausted Nowitzki got the inbounds pass and misfired on an awkward 3-point attempt from the corner.
The Jazz came away with the rebound, and Harris salted the long night away with a pair of free throws. West added a final 3-pointer, but the Jazz and their playoff hopes prevailed.
Nowitzki finished with 40 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Terry ended up with 27 points, with 14 coming in the three overtimes. Carter had 18, and West finished with 16.
Harris had his best game against his old team with 23 points. Jefferson had 28, and Hayward had 24.
What it means:
The Mavs (34-28) end the disappointing four-game road trip with consecutive losses and in seventh place in the West standings with four games to go. Houston and Golden State close out the home schedule Wednesday and Friday.
Bold play of the game:
Millsap goes untouched above the rim and slams home Hayward's off-balance shot in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime. It was the Jazz's 12th offensive rebound of the game, and without it, those crazy 15 minutes of OT would not have been necessary.
Stat of the game:
Shawn Marion finished with two rebounds, snapping his five-game run of double-digit rebounds. He didn't play in the fourth quarter or any of the overtimes."

Notebook: Jazz 123, Mavericks 121.

"THE FACTS: Al Jefferson still envisions the Utah Jazz as a playoff team, so he went out and had a 20/20 night.
Jefferson had 28 points and 26 rebounds to lead the Jazz to a riveting 123-121 win over the Dallas Mavericks in triple overtime Monday night. Gordon Hayward had 24 points and Devin Harris had 23 as the Jazz closed in on a postseason berth. They're now only a half game behind Phoenix and Houston for the final Western Conference playoff spot.
Utah blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and had chances to win in the first and second overtime periods, but couldn't put the reigning champions away. The Jazz needed a put-back dunk from Paul Millsap with 2.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 89-89 just to send it into overtime.
Dirk Nowitzki rebounded from a subpar shooting effort Sunday to score 40 points. He had nine rebounds and six assists for the Mavericks, who were playing their fourth road game in five days. Jason Terry chipped in 27 points for Dallas.
THE STAT:
The last Jazz player to have a 25-point, 25-rebound game? Karl Malone? Nope. Carlos Boozer? Wrong again. Rich Kelley, who played for the Jazz back in their New Orleans days, had 27 points and 25 rebounds against the l.a. lakers in a 121-109 loss on Nov. 17, 1978.
QUOTABLE:
"It's now or never. We started tonight. We just got to see where our heart is at and I know everybody in the locker room wants to make the playoffs. So we are going to fight and we are going to fight 'til the end. That's all we can do."-- Jazz center Jefferson on his team needing to win to stay in the playoff race.
THE STAT II:
Nothing stood out quite like Jefferson's stat line. His 26 rebounds tied a career-high and was the most for a Jazz player since Millsap had 24 in a game in April of 2010. Jefferson nearly had a double-double by halftime with eight points and 10 rebounds. He played the most of any player in Monday's game, going 54:02 and he didn't wear down. He had four points apiece in the second and third overtime periods.
TURNING POINT:
The Jazz blew chances to win in the fourth quarter and each of the first two overtime periods before finally putting the Mavericks away. A 3-pointer by Harris and a jumper by Jefferson made it 120-115 with 1:08 left in the game. Millsap made a free throw and Harris sank two foul shots to make it 123-118 to finally pull it out for Utah. Delonte West hit a meaningless 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left for Dallas.
HOT:
Utah's DeMarre Carroll, making his fifth NBA start, caught fire in the third quarter. He scored 11 of his 15 points on 4-for-4 shooting and had three of his six assists in the third period. And that came after he had a root canal earlier in the day. Nowitzki, who shot 9-for-28 in an overtime loss against the lakers on Sunday, was 13-for-26 from the field. He seemingly got whatever shot he wanted against the Jazz, and scored 40 points against them for the second time this season.
NOT:
Vince Carter hit a couple 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that almost won the game for Dallas. But take those two bombs away and Carter shot 3-for-13, and he didn't score in any of the overtime periods. Rookie Alec Burks only played 12 minutes and shot 0-for-6 during that time. The Jazz blew a 10-point lead by shooting 29.4 percent in the fourth quarter, making just five shots.
GOOD MOVE:
It was evident from the start that Nowitzki was getting the world champion treatment and he knew it. He was aggressive offensively, drew fouls and made his free throws. He shot 12-for-12 from the free-throw line.
BAD MOVE:
West may have been inspired by the recent release of "The Three Stooges" movie. After he fouled Hayward while the two were running up the court in the second quarter, he was whistled for a technical foul for sticking his finger in Hayward's ear. Larry, Moe and Curly would have been proud.
QUOTABLE II:
"It was a fun game to be a part of. Both teams left it all out there and competed at a high level. Big plays and big shots on both ends of the floor. The crowd was into it so you couldn't ask for a better game. We had our chances. If we get that rebound at the end of regulation the game is over."
-- Mavericks forward Nowitzki on what a great game it was while lamenting how failing to box out Millsap would have won the game for his team.
QUOTABLE III:
"He had some lint in his hair. I was just trying to get it out for him. I was giving him a wet willy. That's all. We are two warriors. We're out there battling on the battlefield. I forgot the NBA is a gentleman's game so we have to scrap and do it nicely."-- Mavericks guard West on his run-in with Hayward.
NOTABLE:
Dallas guard Rodrigue Beaubois was listed as a game-time decision and Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said he thought he'd play. But Beaubois was held out with a strained calf, missing his second straight game. Utah snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Mavericks. Dallas hadn't played in a triple overtime game since 1989. Jefferson, Millsap, Hayward, Harris, Nowitzki and Terry each played more than 50 minutes. Jason Kidd made his 1,300th career start.
UP NEXT:
For the Mavericks, Wednesday vs. Rockets.
For the Jazz, Wednesday @ Portland."
