Thunder rally past Mavericks for 13th straight win at home
Associated Press.
OKLAHOMA CITY--"The Oklahoma City Thunder's top trio struggled to make shots all night.
With one final flurry, they were still able to keep rolling at home.

Russell Westbrook scored 24 points, Kevin Durant added 22 and the Thunder scored the final eight points to escape with a 95-91 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night and run their home winning streak to 13 games.

Durant, Westbrook and top reserve James Harden went a combined 16 for 49 from the field as Oklahoma City managed to pull one out without needing to make a basket in the final 2 minutes.

"The thing is with us, we've just got to continue to just keep playing hard no matter if we're making shots or not, and playing together on both ends," said Durant, who missed 12 of his 18 shots.

"It was a sloppy game but I'm glad we came out on top."

TrueHoop: Thunderous Statement
The Thunder took a measure of revenge for last year's playoff defeat, and beating the Mavericks for the third time this year, Ian Levy writes. Dime

Westbrook answered Dirk Nowitzki's fourth 3-pointer of the final period by hitting one of his own from the right wing to get Oklahoma City within 91-90 with 2:25 remaining, and Dallas didn't score again.

Serge Ibaka hit two free throws with 46 seconds left to give Oklahoma City the lead, and Jason Terry missed two shots down the stretch for the Mavericks.

Afterward, Dallas coach Rick Carlisle protested the call that allowed Ibaka to attempt the go-ahead free throws after Ian Mahinmi swatted his shot away.

"I'm in disbelief that there was a foul called on Mahinmi. I just watched the play five times. It's a block. That's it. That's an enormous play," Carlisle said in opening his postgame comments.

"Then Nowitzki gets hit on the arm at the other end and there's no call. I'm at a loss, so I apologize for that."

The Mavericks still had a shot to go back ahead and then another attempt at the tie, but Terry missed both times.

"We haven't really been sharp on our execution at the end of ball games and that's hurt us," said Terry, who scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter. "Not a big concern because I know the type of team we are. We thrive in those situations.

"We've got to just keep clawing it out. Eventually it will swing our way and we'll pull these games out, but it's been a thorn in our side the entire season."

Nowitzki finished with 27 points but didn't touch the ball on a key possession when Dallas was down by two with 13 seconds left.

Instead, Terry and Jason Kidd passed the ball back and forth with Kidd getting stuck under the basket before tossing it right back. Terry missed on a short jumper along the right baseline that would have tied it, and Westbrook hit two free throws to ice it after grabbing the rebound.

Terry said "that was definitely not the plan" and guessed that Kidd must have seen something in the defense that he didn't.

"I still ended up getting a pretty decent shot, I thought, under duress. But again, I ask for the ball in that situation and if I get another opportunity, I'm betting on myself to win," Terry said.

Carlisle said Kidd was wide open under the basket but Terry didn't see him in time.

"It just was a really unusual play but it never should have come to that," Carlisle said.

Harden had 16 points on 4-for-11 shooting and Kendrick Perkins grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds for West-leading Oklahoma City. Westbrook missed 14 of his 20 shot attempts.

"It happens like that some nights. We've just got to stay consistent with what we do defensively and everything will play out," Westbrook said.

The Thunder were held to their second-worst shooting performance of the season, at 38.2 percent.

"We gutted this one out, man," Durant said. "They did a great job of throwing different defenses at us. ... They mixed it up on us. It was tough to kind of get a rhythm for a few of us."

Oklahoma City made up for it with a hefty free-throw advantage, making 29 of 33 while Dallas got to the line only 10 times and made all of them. On that note, Carlisle said : "I don't want to be accusatory to the officials. I thought our guys were aggressive enough to have deserved a few more chances."

Mahinmi added 13 points, all in the first half, after being pressed into action when starting center Brendan Haywood was hurt just seconds into the game.

Already without reserve center Brandan Wright because of a concussion, the Mavericks lost Haywood on the opening possession of the game. Haywood won the tip-off, then got the ball inside before missing a shot and landing with his left foot on top of Perkins' left foot. He hobbled up the court to foul Durant and then headed to locker room and did not return.

Carlisle had no timetable on when Haywood would be able to return.

Mahinmi had seven points, including a three-point play, during a 15-5 run that put Dallas up 52-42 with 1:20 to go before halftime.

The Thunder scored the final three points of the first half and then were able to reverse a seven-point halftime deficit during the third quarter. Oklahoma City scored the first seven points after halftime to tie it at 52 on Westbrook's jumper from the right elbow with 9:24 left, then pulled ahead 68-61 with another string of seven consecutive points late in the third.

Nowitzki scored all 12 of his fourth-quarter points by making all four of his 3-point attempts but he never got a chance when it counted the most.

Dallas suffered another tough loss after dropping its previous visit to Oklahoma City 104-102 loss when Durant hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"There's a lot of scrambles at the end of the games. That's why it's important to play from in front when you can. ... There's no excuse," Carlisle said.

"We didn't make the plays and I'm very disappointed at the way the whole thing went with the other stuff."

Game notes
Sean Williams played 3 minutes in the fourth quarter and was twice called for goaltending after being called up from the NBA Development League on Sunday to provide depth at center after Wright's concussion. "He'll be with us until Brandan gets back, and we don't know how long that's going to be. He's done a good job in the D-League with the Frisco team and we feel like it's important to have an extra body in case we need somebody," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said.
... Carlisle didn't want his team slowing the pace to combat Oklahoma City's athleticism. "One of the characteristics of our team last year when we won it was we got it up the floor quick and sometimes we didn't get a shot until the last 5 seconds but the ball kept moving and we just kept playing. This year, we're working toward being better at doing that."
... The Thunder moved to 7-1 this season following a loss."

Notebook: Thunder 95, Mavericks 91.
Posted By Randy Renner, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook hit a pair of free throws with 1.8 seconds left to ice the game and give the Thunder a thrilling 95-91 win over the Dallas Mavericks. It's the 13th straight home win for the Thunder. Westbrook led OKC with 24 points, Kevin Durant added 22 and James Harden had 16. Center Kendrick Perkins pulled down 14 rebounds.
Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs with 27 points, 12 of them coming on fourth quarter 3-pointers. Jason Terry had 18 with half of those in the final frame. Oklahoma City's "Big Three" did not have good shooting nights. Durant was 6-for-18 (1-for-6 on 3-pointers) and turned the ball over seven times. Westbrook was 6-for-20 and Harden was 4-for-11 (1-for-6 on 3-pointers). The Thunder shot just 38.2 percent for the game but held Dallas scoreless (0-for-4 shooting and two turnovers) in the final 2:46 to secure the win.

QUOTABLE: "Our defense in the second half was outstanding (35 percent shooting for Dallas) we competed on both ends and gave ourselves a chance to win. You're gonna have nights when you can't shoot the ball straight (38.2 percent shooting for OKC) but you have to defend and play hard and give yourself a chance."-- Thunder head coach Scott Brooks.

QUOTABLE II: "We gutted this one out. They threw different defenses at us but we were finally able to make some plays. We just gotta keep playing hard even when shots aren't falling."-- Durant.

THE STAT: Oklahoma City had trouble from the field but not from the line outscoring the Mavericks by 19 points at the stripe. OKC was 29-for-33 (87.9 percent) on free throws. Dallas attempted only 10 and hit them all.

QUOTABLE III: "They go to the line 30 times and we go 10 but that's what it is on the road, we still had chances. It's tough we won the championship last year because we were the best team to execute down the stretch, getting what we want and getting stops but this year, so far, we just don't have it."-- Nowitzki.

TURNING POINT: The Oklahoma City defense down the stretch and in particular the play of Perkins. Twice in the final seconds Perkins switched onto Terry along the baseline. He blocked one of Terry's shots and forced a miss on another.

QUOTABLE IV: "Perk was really good, he does so much for us. Terry is a right-handed player and he made him go left and forced those misses."-- Brooks.

HOT: Thunder center Perkins was 3-for-4 in the first half...Nowitzki was 4-for-4 including four 3-pointers in the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter...Harden was 3-for-3 in the fourth quarter...Dallas was 6-for-8 on 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

NOT: The Thunder hit just three of their first 11 shots (27.3 percent) and finished the first half 16-for-39 (41 percent)..
..Westbrook was 2-for-8 in the first half..
..Harden was 1-for-6 in the first 24 minutes..
..Durant had five of the Thunder's six first half turnovers and was just 5-for-15 through three quarters..
..Nowitzki was 6-for-16 in the first 36 minutes..
..Terry was 3-for-10 in the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Thunder assistant coach Maurice Cheeks was honored during a first quarter timeout for being a finalist for the Basketball Hall of Fame this year. He was given a standing ovation by the sellout crowd inside Chesapeake Energy Arena. Watching the game from a primo seat (next to Durant's mom) was Philip Bailey, the lead singer for the group Earth, Wind and Fire.

GOOD MOVE: When Dallas center Brendan Heywood sprained his ankle on the game's first play Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle decided to go with Ian Mahinmi who then hit five of his first six shots and led the Mavericks with 13 points at halftime.

NOTABLE: Heywood limped into the Mavericks locker room with that sprained left ankle and did not return to action. He is being listed as day-to-day..
..Oklahoma City is now 16-1 at home..
..The Mavs are in the middle of a nine games in 12 nights stretch, so far they have lost four of the first five of those games.

UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Tuesday vs. New York, Thursday @ Phoenix, Friday @ Sacramento. For the Thunder, Wednesday vs. Phoenix, Friday vs. Cleveland, Saturday vs. Charlotte".

Knicks-Mavericks Preview.
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN.

"One of the signature performances during Jeremy Lin's rise came when he led the New York Knicks to a nationally-televised victory over the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.

Lin is now enduring some woes heading into a rematch with the Mavericks on Tuesday - a night on which Tyson Chandler will receive a championship ring in his return to Dallas.

New York (18-19) had lost 17 of 19 meetings to Dallas (22-17) before Lin had 28 points, a career-high 14 assists and five steals in a 104-97 home win Feb. 19. He drew praise from point guard counterpart Jason Kidd afterward.

The Knicks sensation, though, has now hit a rough patch, missing 20 of 27 shots and totaling eight assists and 14 turnovers over consecutive road losses.

"I'd rather be going through these tough times right now than in the playoffs," Lin said. "So just trying to learn as much as I can and hopefully we can make a push."

Chandler can expect a warm reception from the Dallas fans after he helped the franchise win its first title in his lone season with the Mavericks by leading the club in rebounding and blocks.

"I'm just really looking forward to being back here," said Chandler, whom the Mavericks dealt to New York in December. "You know, last year was incredible. I felt a lot of the emotions from the fans here, I know how much they respect my game and what I was able to bring last year."

Chandler had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the first meeting with Dallas. He could have an easier time Tuesday if Mavs starting center Brendan Haywood does not play.

Haywood sprained his left ankle on the first possession of Monday's 95-91 loss at Oklahoma City and did not return.

The Mavericks have dropped six of eight, beginning with their loss to the Knicks. They came to New York on a season-high six-game win streak before their up-close view of 'Linsanity'.

Dallas played a fairly good game Monday before being outscored 8-0 over the final 2:45.

"We haven't really been sharp on our execution at the end of ball games and that's hurt us," guard Jason Terry said. "Not a big concern because I know the type of team we are. We thrive in those situations."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 points on the heels of his season-high 40-point effort in Saturday's win over Utah. He and coach Rick Carlisle were not happy that the host Thunder shot 33 free throws compared to 10 attempts for Dallas.

"I don't want to be accusatory to the officials," Carlisle said. "I thought our guys were aggressive enough to have deserved a few more chances."

The Knicks are also among the NBA's best teams in getting to the line mainly because of Carmelo Anthony, who missed last month's meeting while sidelined with a groin injury. Anthony became a Mavericks nemesis during the 2009 playoffs, when he averaged 30.0 points against them in a playoff series victory with Denver.

The All-Star forward has had mixed results in five games alongside Lin in the starting lineup, averaging 18.4 points - more than three below his season average - on 41.7 percent shooting.

"We definitely have the talent, it's just about coming together at this point," Chandler said."

Jeremy Lin fails to put down Dallas Mavericks.

Dallas, March 6 (CNA)"The New York Knicks and their star point guard Jeremy Lin recorded their second straight loss Tuesday, losing 95-85 to the defending champion Dallas Mavericks, who were led by Dirk Nowitzki's game-high 28 points.

Lin, the first Taiwanese-American NBA player, contributed 14 points on 4-13 shooting, seven assists, three rebounds and had two turnovers, while teammates Amare Stoudemire and Steve Novak respectively scored 26 and 13 points.

But that was not enough to overcome Nowitzki, who fired 28 points, including 11 in the final four and half minutes, handing the Knicks their third straight road defeat since losing to the Miami Heat 102-88 Feb. 23.

Lin said postgame that "we couldn't close this game out and they obviously did a great job of getting defensive stops."

"Those stops led to quick easy buckets and Dirk is a clutch player who scores a lot in the fourth quarter," he was quoted as saying by AP.

Down 14 points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Knicks went on a 15-0 run without Lin to take a one-point lead.

The Mavericks countered with a 14-0 drive, including two free throws by Nowitzki and a three-pointer by Jason Kidd, to put the game away.

Lin returned to the game with 3:57 remaining and his team down by 3, but could not stop the Mavericks' charge.

The Knicks are now 18-20 and have fallen to eighth in the Eastern Conference. They will face the San Antonio Spurs Wednesday at the AT&T Center.

Earlier before the game, Lin said there would not have been a "Linsanity" if it was not for the Mavericks' general manager Donnie Nelson, who invited Lin to play for the team's summer league team in 2010 and was the only GM with interest in the Harvard graduate.

Lin said "all I know is that he gave me a chance, and that definitely has something to do with me being able to even be in the NBA this year," FOXSports reported.

Speaking of the practice experiences with the Mavs' Roddy Beaubois and Dominique Jones, Lin said "that was an eye-opening experience for me."

"I saw what could work for me and what couldn't work for me, and I had to make another adjustment once I went from the summer league to the NBA."

Nowitzki leads Mavs past Lin, Knicks.

DALLAS (AP) –"While Linsanity is already simmering down a bit in New York, Dirk Nowitzki keeps having big games for the Dallas Mavericks like he has for so long.

Nowitzki scored nine of his 28 points in a game-clinching run after the Mavericks had lost the lead by going scoreless the first 7½ minutes of the fourth quarter, and Dallas beat the Knicks 95-85 on Tuesday night.

"This was a much-needed win. It was a big character win," Mavericks guard Jason Kidd said. "We responded with some stops and Dirk made some big shots."

Nowitzki made a 14-foot fadeaway jumper with 4:34 left, starting a 14-0 run when the 11-time All-Star forward scored nine points.

That was right after the Knicks, who had trailed by as many as 19, scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter and went ahead 78-77 when Amare Stoudemire penetrated to make a shot with about 5 minutes left. It was their first lead since scoring the game's first four points, and didn't last long.

"The rhythm I had there in the second half, I was definitely looking for the ball," said Nowitzki, who scored 24 after halftime. "I was chasing the ball sometimes, I was looking at Kidd and basically telling him, just bring it over here and let me try and take it home."

Jeremy Lin had 14 points and seven assists, solid numbers but only half of what he had nearly 2½ weeks ago when the Knicks won at home against Dallas. He had 28 points and 14 assists in that game before the All-Star break that ended a six-game winning streak for the Mavericks, and started a stretch of six losses in eight games before Tuesday night.

The Knicks are 2-4 since then, and have consecutive losses for the first time since Lin became a starter a month ago.

Stoudemire had 26 points. Tyson Chandler, who got his NBA championship ring from the Mavericks before the game, had six points, eight rebounds and a technical foul.

When Nowitzki made a short baseline shot with 2:27 left to stretch the lead to 88-78, Chandler was standing at the scorer's table waiting to get back into the game. He was motioning for a travel call against his former teammate, and even tapped an official running by before Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni called timeout.

"First half we did a great job containing him," Stoudemire said of Nowitzki. "Second half, he was able to get it going a little bit, a couple of open shots, a couple of tough shots, a couple of travel shots. But he played well."

Chandler got called for the technical during the stoppage in play, and Nowitzki made the free throw.

Rodrigue Beaubois added 18 points for the Mavericks, while Kidd had 15 points and six assists.

Dallas, which lost at Oklahoma City on Monday night, wraps up a stretch of nine games in 12 days with three road games in three nights, starting Thursday in Phoenix.

Mavericks fans were cheering loudly with 13 seconds left in the third quarter when Nowitzki, with JR Smith pushing against him, finally moved around and drew the foul while driving toward the basket. Nowitzki made both free throws to make it 77-63, but the Mavericks didn't score again until he dominated in the game-turning spurt.

Lin wasn't even on the court the first 8 minutes of the fourth quarter when the Knicks briefly took the lead.

"We made a run with our second team," Lin said. "We couldn't close this game out and they obviously did a great job of getting defensive stops. Those stops led to quick easy buckets and Dirk is a clutch player who scores a lot in the fourth quarter."

The Mavericks played without starting center Brendan Haywood and post player Brandan Wright, who missed his third consecutive game after a concussion.

Coach Rick Carlisle said Haywood still had some swelling after rolling his ankle on the opening possession in the loss at Oklahoma City, but would travel with the team. Wright will not make the upcoming three-game trip.

Haywood became the Mavs starter after Chandler got a $56 million, four-year contract with the Knicks in a sign-and-trade that was part of a three-team deal at the start of training camp.

In a short ceremony before the game, Chandler became the last player from the Mavericks' 2010-11 team to get his NBA championship ring.

A video of Chandler's highlights from last season was shown before the 7-foot-1 center got a nice ovation from Mavericks fans.

"To us, he was that missing piece last year that took us over the top," Nowitzki said. "I was happy to see him get a great ovation by the crowd. That was a special moment for him and for us. I'm glad everything got their ring now and we can focus on getting to the playoffs."

Notes: The Knicks played the second of four consecutive road games, and four of six away from Madison Square Garden. They are at San Antonio on Wednesday night. … Mavericks guard Vince Carter went 1-for-8 shooting for three points. He made a 3-pointer for the first Dallas basket, and didn't make another shot."

Carmelo Anthony invisible as Dirk Nowitzki's Dallas Mavericks too much for NY Knicks, Jeremy Lin; Amar'e Stoudemire scores 26.
By Frank Isola / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS.

Tyson Chandler picks up his championship ring but leaves with a loss.
MAVERICKS 95, NY KNICKS 85

DALLAS —"The Knicks’ comeback came with Carmelo Anthony on the bench. The Mavs’ comeback came with Anthony on the floor.

A bizarre and ultimately frustrating fourth quarter for the Knicks was a 12-minute exercise in futility for Mike D’Antoni’s best player. Somehow, Melo was invisible even when he was visible.

“It was just one of those nights,” Anthony said. “It gets frustrating out there when things aren’t going your way.”

The Knicks overcame a 19-point third-quarter deficit only to collapse in every way imaginable over the last four minutes.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks had no trouble involving their star forward, Dirk Nowitzki, and rode the NBA Finals MVP to a 95-85 victory.

The loss was the Knicks’ second straight and they are 18-20 entering Wednesday night’s game in San Antonio.

Moreover, they are 2-4 since Anthony returned to the lineup. His partnership with Jeremy Lin is officially off to a slow start. In fact, Anthony admitted that it’s been difficult for him to adjust to no longer having the ball to make plays.

“Any time you go from having the ball and me distributing and now just waiting for it to come to me . . . that’s part of the adjustment for myself,” said Anthony, who scored six points, none in the second half.

Anthony originally left the locker room without speaking, only to return 10 minutes later and briefly comment.

He could have been upset for having sat for nearly 12 minutes in the second half and returning with 3:57 remaining. During Anthony’s extended rest, the Knicks went from trailing by 11 to leading, 78-77, which included a 15-0 run to start the fourth quarter. Dallas had regained the lead for good at 81-78 when Anthony and Lin both returned, and D’Antoni admitted that he considered leaving his leading scorer on the bench.

“Everything goes through your mind,” D’Antoni said. “It’s tough. You try to ride it or don’t. It’s a gut feeling. I just thought that some of our guys were losing a little bit. And you hope that the other guys can come in and pick it right up. It’s tough to put them in that situation. It’s not easy but I don’t know how you get around that.”

The issue for Anthony is not that he sits, it’s that the Knicks don’t do enough to involve him in the offense when he’s on the floor. Nowitzki went 1-for-8 in the first half while Anthony was 2-for-8. But in the third quarter, Dallas made a conscious decision to force-feed Nowitzki in the post and he responded by scoring 24 points, taking 10 shots and attempting 10 free throws in the second half.

Anthony took just four second-half shots and failed to make one. Yes, the Knicks were riding Amar’e Stoudemire, who had his best game in weeks by scoring 26 points on 10-for-18 shooting. But the Knicks weren’t trying to run the offense through Anthony in the post just one game after he dominated Boston late in the fourth quarter.

At one point in the third quarter, Anthony was clearly upset at Lin for not passing the ball to him. He also looked frustrated when he returned in the fourth and the first possession resulted in Steve Novak, whose shooting helped the Knicks rally, took a deep, ill-advised three-pointer with Nowitzki in his face.

Seconds later, Novak fouled Nowitzki, and after Dallas pushed its lead to 83-78, Anthony fired up a quick three with 15 seconds left on the shot clock. The Knicks regained possession, but after Novak missed a runner, Jason Kidd buried a three-pointer as Dallas answered the Knicks’ 15-0 run with a 14-0 run.

“The second half we were going to Amar’e,” Anthony said. “He had it going early. We wanted to exploit that. As far as me, I’m all right. I’ll figure it out what I have to do out there.”

Lin, who produced 28 points and 14 assists in his first meeting with Dallas, recorded half that in both categories Tuesday night. He also took a hard foul from Kidd that D’Antoni felt should have been a flagrant since Lin was hit in the head.

D’Antoni argued his way into a technical foul, one of three in the second half for the Knicks. J.R. Smith was booked for one, and ex-Maverick Tyson Chandler, who received his championship ring in a pregame ceremony, had the other.

It was an emotionally charged game. Lamar Odom exchanged words with Mavs owner Mark Cuban, who was upset over the forward’s failure to hustle. Anthony traded insults with Shawn Marion and was so distracted that he threw an inbounds pass away. It was that kind of night.

“We honestly got to figure out what we want to do, what we want to try to accomplish this year,” Chandler said. “We’re really up and down right now, sporadic. We really have to buy in.”

Nowitzki has 28 for Mavs in 95-85 win over Knicks.
By STEPHEN HAWKINS.
DALLAS (AP)"While Linsanity is already simmering down a bit in New York, Dirk Nowitzki keeps having big games for the Dallas Mavericks like he has for so long.
Nowitzki scored nine of his 28 points in a game-clinching run after the Mavericks had lost the lead by going scoreless the first 7 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter, and Dallas beat the Knicks 95-85 on Tuesday night.
Jeremy Lin had 14 points and seven assists, solid numbers but only half of what he had nearly 2 1/2 weeks ago when the Knicks won at home against Dallas.

They are at San Antonio on Wednesday night.
... Mavericks guard Vince Carter went 1-for-8 shooting for three points. He made a 3-pointer for the first Dallas basket, and didn't make another shot."

Notebook: Mavericks 95, Knicks 85.
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: Dirk Nowitzki came to the Mavericks' rescue in a game that appeared headed for a blowout, scoring 24 of his 28 points in the second half -- 11 in the final five minutes -- to secure a 95-85 victory Tuesday against the Knicks in Dallas.
The Mavericks were rolling in the third quarter, up by as many as 19, but New York didn't roll over. A 15-0 run to start the fourth quarter gave the Knicks a brief 78-77 lead. Nowitzki finally put Dallas on the board with a jumper at the 4:34 mark, touching off a decisive 14-0 run for the defending champs.
Amar'e Stoudemire had 26 points, Jeremy Lin tallied 14 points and seven assists and Steve Novak scored 13 points (4-for-8 3-pointers) for New York. Rodrigue Beaubois had 18 off the bench and Jason Kidd finished with 15 points and six assists for Dallas, which won for the 13th time in its last 15 home games against the Knicks.

QUOTABLE: "In this season, no lead is safe, no deficit is too large. We just see it time and time again. We've just got to keep playing, keep playing, keep playing. They made a heck of a run to take the lead. We made a heck of a run to put the game away."-- Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle

THE STAT: Playing their fourth game in five nights, veterans Nowitzki (11) and Kidd (five) had enough in the tank to score the first 16 of the Mavericks' fourth-quarter points.

TURNING POINT: After Nowitzki gave Dallas the lead with 4:34 left, the Knicks sent him to the free-throw line on the Mavs' next two possessions. He went 4-for-4 and then Kidd drained a clutch 3-pointer after a missed jumper by Novak.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought our energy was great. We were getting up into people. We were turning them over a little bit. They missed some shots. Novak hit some threes. Guys got to the rim."
-- New York head coach Mike D'Antoni on the 15-0 run to open the fourth quarter.

HOT: Coming off a 1-for-8 effort in the first half, Nowitzki scored 13 in the third and 11 in the fourth. He was 7-for-10 from the field after intermission and finished 10-for-10 at the line.

NOT: For the Mavericks, Lamar Odom finished 1-for-9 and Vince Carter was 1-for-8. Carmelo Anthony was held to six points on 2-for-12 shooting for the Knicks.

GOOD MOVE: Dallas took advantage of the speed of Beaubois, often at the expense of veteran Baron Davis. Beaubois scored 12 points in just 13 minutes in the first half.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Lin missed nine of his 13 field-goal attempts and was 5-for-8 at the line. He added three rebounds, two steals and two turnovers.

INSIDE THE ARENA: To a standing ovation, Knicks center Tyson Chandler received his 2011 NBA championship ring from Carlisle during a pregame ceremony. "Please help me welcome back a guy that will always go down as an all-time legendary Maverick player," the coach told the sold-out American Airlines Center crowd (20, 605).
... .After the third quarter, a fan sank a halfcourt shot to win an 82-inch 3-D television

NOTABLE: Monday's loss at Oklahoma City guaranteed that the Mavericks, in this abbreviated 66-game campaign, won't record at least 50 wins in the regular season for the first time since 1999-2000 (40-42).
... Dallas centers Brendan Haywood (left ankle sprain) and Brandan Wright (concussion) did not play. Haywood is day-to-day, but Wright will not travel on the upcoming road trip.
... Knicks forward Jared Jeffries left in the second quarter with a sore right knee and did not return.
... The Mavericks are 14-0 at home when leading entering the fourth quarter.

UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Thursday @ Phoenix.

http://www.nba.com/g...X/gameinfo.html

Mavericks-Suns Preview.
By JEFF BARTL.

"The Dallas Mavericks haven't won away from home in nearly three weeks, and their upcoming stretch of three road games in three nights may have come at an inopportune time.

They have a solid chance of ending that streak, though, considering their recent dominance of the Phoenix Suns.

Dallas looks to avoid a fifth straight road loss Thursday night by sweeping another season series from Phoenix, which has won five of its last six at home.

The struggling Mavericks (23-17) have won only twice in their last seven games overall, though Dirk Nowitzki's 28 points helped them earn a 95-85 home win over New York on Tuesday.

"This was a much-needed win. It was a big character win," said Jason Kidd, who scored 15 points.

Dallas is in the midst of playing nine games in 12 days, and it will make trips to Sacramento on Friday and Golden State on Saturday to conclude that stretch.

Starting center Brendan Haywood's status is uncertain after he sat out Tuesday with a sprained left ankle, but coach Rick Carlisle said he'll travel with the team.

Nowitzki has done his part over the last three games, averaging 31.7 points and shooting 52.5 percent from the field. He scored 24 in the second half Tuesday.

"The rhythm I had there in the second half, I was definitely looking for the ball," Nowitzki said. "I was chasing the ball sometimes, I was looking at Kidd and basically telling him, 'Just bring it over here and let me try and take it home.'"

It's winning on the road that's been the problem for the Mavericks.

They've lost a season-high four straight road games, the last being a 95-91 loss at Oklahoma City on Monday. Kidd was fined $25,000 for criticizing the officiating after that contest.

Another trip to Phoenix may help end that skid after Dallas routed the Suns 122-99 on Jan. 30 in its last visit. That marked the club's eighth consecutive win over Phoenix, which played without Steve Nash due to a left thigh contusion.

The Suns, though, have their point guard back and went 5-1 on a six-game homestand from Feb. 19 through Sunday before falling 115-104 at Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Nash had 12 points and 13 assists and Marcin Gortat finished with a career-high 28 points and 11 rebounds for Phoenix (17-21), which blew a 16-point second-half lead and was outscored 31-16 in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we gave ourself a chance and we just weren't able to close it out," coach Alvin Gentry said. "You hope for a chance to be able to compete and put yourself in a position to where maybe making a couple of plays down the stretch you'll be able to win the game."

Nash, who played for the Mavericks from 1998-2004, has averaged 11.4 assists in his last five games against his former team, though he's scored eight points or fewer in three of those contests.

He went 2 for 9 from the field in Dallas during a 93-87 loss Jan. 23, when former Suns forward Shawn Marion scored a game-high 29 points. Nowitzki didn't play that night, sitting out with a sore right knee.

Nowitzki scored 20 points and Nash had a solid 15-point, 12-assist performance Jan. 4 in Dallas' 98-89 win.

Phoenix's last victory in the series was a 112-106 home win Jan. 28, 2010."

Suns get 1st win over Mavericks in 9 tries.
Associated Press.

PHOENIX–"The Phoenix Suns finally got the best of the Dallas Mavericks. Barely.

Jared Dudley scored 12 of his 18 points in a third-quarter comeback and Phoenix held on to beat Dallas 96-94 on Thursday night, the Suns' first victory over the Mavericks in nine tries, four this season.

"This is definitely big for us," Dudley said. "We've struggled against this more than any other team, especially at home."

Dallas blew out the Suns in Phoenix 122-99 on Jan. 30.

Grant Hill scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half for Phoenix, but missed two free throws with 15.4 seconds left. Dallas had two chances after that, but Rodrigue Beaubois missed a driving layup, then couldn't hit an open 18-foot jumper at the buzzer.

"You are not always going to get your star players the shot at the end because they attract so much attention," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said, explaining the last play. "That is one of the reasons Rodrigue got so wide open."

One player who wondered why he wasn't in the game at the end was sharpshooter Jason Terry.

"I can't check myself in and out of the game," he said. "You got to ask the person who didn't have me in the game. Ask him his thoughts on why I wasn't in the game. What I think doesn't matter."

Asked why Terry wasn't in the game Carlisle simply said "coach's decision."

Marcin Gortat added 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Suns won their fourth straight home game, their longest streak in nearly two years. Steve Nash had 11 points and 11 assists.

Vince Carter and Dirk Nowitzki had 18 points apiece for Dallas in the Mavericks' fifth road loss in a row.

Phoenix, coming off a loss at Oklahoma City the previous night, outscored the Mavericks 31-8 over a stretch late in the third quarter and early in the fourth, erasing a 12-point deficit to go up by 11.

"We got the pace of the game up where we wanted it," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. "Once again we came up with stops, which is really important to run off misses as opposed to taking the ball and running off makes. We had the game at the tempo where we wanted it and we were able to score."

Nash said the game was crucial as the Suns try to climb into contention for a playoff berth.

"We couldn't lose both of these (Oklahoma City and Dallas) and stay in the playoff picture," he said. "It's an early crunch time for us. We've got to keep crawling back to that eight-nine-ten spots and try to give ourselves a chance to sneak in there."

The Suns had an 18-4 outburst over the final 4½ minutes of the third quarter to take a 78-76 lead entering the fourth. Phoenix added to the onslaught with a 13-4 run to start the final quarter. Sebastian Telfair made a 3-pointer, then Shannon Brown's thunderous dunk on a rebound put the Suns up 90-80. Hakim Warrick capped the outburst by making one of two free throws.

But the Suns failed to score in the final 2:46 after Warrick made one of two free throws to put Phoenix ahead 96-87.

Jason Kidd sank his third 3-pointer and Nowitzki's 14-footer cut the lead to 96-92 with 1:01 to play. Gortat scored on a layup but was called for an offensive foul. That led to Nowitzki's inside basket that cut the lead to 96-94 with 25 seconds left. Hill was fouled, but missed both free throws and Dallas called a timeout with 14.3 seconds to go.

Beaubois drove the lane but his shot in traffic was off the mark. The ball was knocked out of bounds, and after referees reviewed the replay, the ball was awarded to Dallas with 2.5 seconds left. Beaubois then misfired from 18 feet and Phoenix escaped with its sixth win in eight games.

"This was just a mental breakdown by our team," Carter said.

Dallas led 72-60 after Lamar Odom's 3-pointer with 4:43 left in the third quarter and was up 74-63 on his dunk with 3:59 to go. The Suns scored the next 11 to tie it 74-74 on Dudley's 20-footer with 1:34 left. Nowitzki's two free throws put Dallas back on top 76-74, but Nash made a 16-footer, then Dudley scored inside with 29.8 seconds left to give Phoenix the lead.

The Suns shot 74 percent in the third quarter (14 of 19).

Carter scored 11 in a 4 1-2 minute span late in the second quarter as the Mavericks took a 53-44 lead at the break. But he had only five points in the second half.

Notes: Phoenix wore its "Los Suns" jerseys for its annual tribute to the city's Latin heritage.
... The Suns last beat Dallas on Jan. 28, 2010, in Phoenix.
... The Mavericks were called for defensive 3 seconds violations four times.
... The Mavericks' last road win was on Feb. 17 at Philadelphia.
... The Suns are 6-1 at home since the players dressed up a model skeleton in the locker room with Warrick's jersey, headband and shoes."

Dallas Mavericks blow another lead, torched by Sun's second half.
by andytobo.

"If you watched this game not knowing who the rebuilding team with an aging superstar was, you left either not knowing (because we’re assuming it’s still the Suns) or being right that it’s the Mavs.

If I told you that what happened in this game is that the Mavs gave up a comfortable lead, went down by ten in the fourth and had a chance to win or tie at the end that they squandered, you wouldn’t be able to pick that game out of a lineup.

Bullets! Of the sort used to shoot games like this, like the suffering animals they are.

Dirk was an extremely efficient 8-15 for 18 points, as usual, he can’t get a call to save his life (2 free throws), and as usual he didn’t touch the ball in the last two possessions, as cocksure and significantly worse players jacked up wild shots, too early in the shot clock.

Sean Williams was surprisingly good, with 4 points, 3 o-boards, 2 monster blocks, and was the only bench player to finish in the positive in +/-.

The question, as usual, is how deep this problem goes. Jason Terry played 20 minutes and got only 7 shots, because Jason Terry is playing terribly and deserves only 20 minuets and 7 shots, at best. The Mavs have been relying on a 1 and a ½ star system for years, with Dirk and Terry. It’s now Dirk and the incredibly vanishing Terry. I’ll be honest, I remember thinking Terry was just as washed up at this point last season. When he’s not hitting, he’s not good for anything, because of his terrible decision making. We’ll see. But without him, the Mavs don’t have a semblance of a reliable second scorer.

The overwhelming feeling I had watching this game was that for the full second half, the Suns hit all of their shots and got contributions from everybody. It isn’t true. What is true is that the Suns did shoot 70% from the start of the second half to halfway through the fourth. What’s not true is that the Mavs didn’t also get contributions from everybody. Five players had 12 or more. They had a four man bench to Phoenix’s six, but they scored 30 to Phoenix’s 31.

So how come it looked like the Mavs offense was entirely broken for all of the second half? I literally thought they weren’t going to score again in the fourth, after the first two minutes. And I was actually 100% correct from 10:02 left in the fourth to 5:47, in which the Suns built their three point lead to an eleven point one. Was it just Dirk being out? I don’t know.

Ian Mahimni had a horrible game. 0-2, 4 points, 2 rebounds. Gortat’s 16-12 could have been a lot worse. Lamar Odom played one of his best games at a Mav, scoring 15 points on 6-10 shooting, looking basically active. Roddy Beabuois was terrible. His second-to-last shot was bad luck, and should have gone down. His last shot was more open than anyone should possibly be at that stage in the game. Still, Carlisle better keep playing him. There’s no one else.

The Mavs got 13 free throws to Phoenix’s 27, got outrebounded 42-38, and still should have won this game going away. They didn’t though, which is becoming a bit too common this season. The Mavs closing lineup was Mahimni, Dirk, Kidd, Carter and Marion, which is pretty weird. The final lineup took out Mahimni and put in Roddy, which was also weird. I guess, with Terry and Lamar playing the way they’ve been playing, Delonte and Haywood out, it’s pretty hard to find the answers.

See you tomorrow."

Mavericks Vs. Suns: Steady Phoenix Outlasts Desperate Dallas.
By Jason Walker .

"Steve Nash had 11 assists, including six in a game-changing 34-point Phoenix third quarter, as the Suns broke an eight game losing streak to the Dallas Mavericks, beating the defending champs, 96-94, Thursday night.

Steve Nash started slow, but he came on strong in the third quarter, scoring eight points and distributing six assists in a 34-point Phoenix third quarter that saw the Suns take the lead from Dallas and never give it back, breaking an eight game losing streak against the Mavericks, 96-94, Thursday night.

The Mavericks looked every bit out of sorts in the fourth quarter, shooting 8-25 from the field and keeping Jason Terry and Lamar Odom on the bench for the final 7:30 of the game.

While the Mavs were struggling, Nash and the Suns were thriving with an odd rotational change of their own. Hakim Warrick had played in only two of the last 15 games for the Suns, but with Phoenix needing an boost, Alvin Gentry went to Warrick, who responded with great energy, getting to the free throw line for 10 attempts in his 17 minutes in the second half. He finishing with nine points, four rebounds and a steal.

As Nash was producing in that momentum turning third quarter, so too was Jared Dudley, who led the team in scoring in that quarter with 12 points. Dudley also led four Suns in double figure scoring with 18, hitting on seven of 12 shots and grabbing eight rebounds as well.

Phoenix had gotten the lead to 11 with about six minutes left, when Dallas made its final run at the Suns. Behind Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion, the Mavs went on a 12-3 run to get close again, but couldn't get any help from Vince Carter, who like the Mavs themselves was hot early (6-11, 13 points first half) but cold late (2-10, five points second half). Carter missed all four of his fourth quarter shots, including a three-pointer and a jump shot that was blocked by Marcin Gortat. Carter and Nowitzki led the Mavericks each with 18 points.

The Mavericks still had a chance to win after Grant Hill missed two free throws with 15 seconds left, leaving the Mavs down two with the ball. But after Hill wisely used the Suns' foul to give after Dirk had gotten good position to shoot over him, the Mavericks couldn't get the ball back to Dirk, instead getting a pair of shot attempts from Rodrigue Beaubois that were off the mark, and the Suns got the win.

That Dallas stayed away from Terry late in the game was surprising, even given his recent struggles, considering he is annually among the leaders in fourth quarter baskets, and the Mavericks were struggling to score late. Even this season, Terry is currently fourth in the league in that situational statistic. Dallas ended up shooting 32 percent from the field in the fourth quarter.

East Bay Ray at Bright Side of the Sun tips his proverbial cap to the home team:

This was a gutsy performance by the Suns. It was easy to leave them for dead in that third quarter as the game looked eerily similar to previous losses to the Mavs, but they would not go down without a fight, and the Mavs looked more like the team that had played last night, losing steam as the game went on.

At Mavs Moneyball, andytobo is puzzled about the Mavericks and who should be playing right now:

The Mavs got 13 free throws to Phoenix's 27, got outrebounded 42-38, and still should have won this game going away. They didn't though, which is becoming a bit too common this season. The Mavs closing lineup was Mahimni, Dirk, Kidd, Carter and Marion, which is pretty weird. The final lineup took out Mahimni and put in Roddy, which was also weird. I guess, with Terry and Lamar playing the way they've been playing, Delonte and Haywood out, it's pretty hard to find the answers."

Suns get 1st win over Mavericks in 9 tries.
By BOB BAUM.
PHOENIX (AP)"The Phoenix Suns finally got the best of the Dallas Mavericks.

The Suns had an 18-4 outburst over the final 4 1/2 minutes of the third quarter to take a 78-76 lead entering the fourth.

Notebook: Suns 96, Mavericks 94.
By Mike Tulumello, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: The Dallas Mavericks don't look like world champs these days.
The Mavericks got a chance for comfort Thursday night from a familiar source, rolling up a 12-point lead over the Phoenix Suns -- a team they'd beaten eight straight -- but they couldn't hold it.
The Suns roared back, then held on in the closing seconds for a 96-94 home win. That sent the Mavericks to their seventh loss in the past 10 games.
The Suns (18-21) won their sixth in the past eight. They also have won four straight at home, overcoming double-digit deficits in all of them.
They got 18 points and eight rebounds from Jared Dudley plus 16 points and 12 boards from Marcin Gortat.
For the Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki shot 8-for-15 for 18 points and Vince Carter shot 8-for-21, also for 18.
The Mavericks ran up a 55-44 halftime lead and increased it to 72-60 on a Lamar Odom 3-pointer with 4:43 left in the third quarter.
Then the Suns, with Hakim Warrick joining the starters, sprinted off on an 18-4 run to close the quarter and take a 78-76 lead.
The Suns led 83-80 early in the final quarter when Warrick hit a pair of free throws, Sebastian Telfair nailed a 3-pointer and then Shannon Brown scored on a spectacular follow-slam to make it 90-80 with 7:30 left.
But with the Suns leading 96-94 in the closing seconds, Grant Hill missed two free throws. He'd also missed a shot that would have virtually wrapped it up, an uncontested layup with 4:13 left and the Suns leading 93-84.
The Mavericks' Rodrique Beaubois missed a runner in the lane with 5.6 seconds left, but the ball was knocked out of bounds back to the Mavericks. Beaubois missed an open 16-footer, and the Mavericks were done.
The Mavericks played the first of three straight; they visit the Sacramento Kings Friday night and Golden State Saturday night.

QUOTABLE: "This is definitely big for us. We've probably struggled against that team more than any other. They have a lot of guys who can make plays, are smart, and they know the game."
-- Jared Dudley on beating the Mavericks.

THE STAT: The Mavericks shot just 35 percent in the second half.

TURNING POINT: The Suns' 18-4 run at the end of the third quarter, which gave them a 78-76 lead heading into the final quarter. This was the Suns' first lead since the first quarter.

QUOTABLE II: "I gotta go with guys who perform. If he's going to be out there, he's got to perform."
-- Suns coach Alvin Gentry on the slumping Markief Morris.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Channing Frye continued his slide. He shot 2-for-8, making him 12-for-47 over the past four games.

GOOD MOVE: Gentry replaced Frye in the second half with the energetic Warrick instead of the sleepy Morris. The game turned in the Suns' favor immediately.

BAD MOVE: That Gentry used Morris at all. Morris failed to score or grab a rebound in six minutes, though he did commit a 3-shot foul. Over the past six games, he's averaged 2.0 points on 4-for-26 shooting.

NOTABLE: Carter moved past Bob Pettit (20,880 points) for No. 32 all time. Pettit was the first NBA player to eclipse 20,000 points.

UP NEXT:
For the Mavericks, Friday @ Sacramento, Saturday @ Golden State..
For the Suns, Saturday vs. Memphis."

Mavericks-Kings Preview.
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN.

"The Dallas Mavericks' lone set of three games in three nights didn't get off to a good start, and they are hoping another long streak of dominance over an opponent doesn't end in the next stop on their trip.

The Mavericks have dropped five straight on the road but have won 10 in a row over the Sacramento Kings heading into Friday night's matchup at Power Balance Pavilion.

There is plenty of speculation about how Dallas (23-18) will handle this grueling stretch of schedule with Jason Kidd, who will turn 39 on March 23. Kidd logged 30 minutes and had 12 points Thursday, but the Mavericks' eight-game winning streak over Phoenix ended with a 96-94 loss.

The Mavericks haven't dropped six straight on the road since an eight-game slide Nov. 7-30, 1999, but have to feel good about their chances against Sacramento (13-26). Dallas hasn't lost in this series since a 102-95 defeat Nov. 11, 2009.

The Kings were dreadful in the first meeting this season, a 99-60 loss Jan. 14 in Dallas. The 60 points marked the fewest allowed in Mavericks franchise history.

Fatigue was a factor that night, with both teams finishing stretches of four games in five days. The Mavs had an edge, however, since they'd blown out Milwaukee the previous night and were relatively well-rested at home for a Kings team coming off a loss in Houston.

Sacramento is now entering the second contest of a nine-game homestand after defeating New Orleans 99-98 on Wednesday. Rookie Isaiah Thomas came up with a steal and fed John Salmons for the go-ahead layup with 6.8 seconds left.

The Kings ended a four-game skid capped by Monday's 119-116 overtime loss at Denver.

"We obviously play different at home, so it's nice to have eight more on our court," forward Jason Thompson said. "It was good to get this win and get the monkey off our back. We've had a lot of tough games lately, especially the Denver (one)."

Thomas, a 5-foot-9 second-round pick out of Washington, is averaging 14.7 points in 10 games since making his first start Feb. 17.

"People start looking at his heart, his desire, his toughness. Those were never in question," coach Keith Smart said. "I think more than anything else, he was evaluated based on how big he is and what can he do in the NBA before the draft."

Second-year center DeMarcus Cousins missed Wednesday's game with food poisoning, but expects to play Friday. He's posted double-doubles in all four of his career games against the Mavericks, averaging 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds but shooting only 39.3 percent.

It's unclear what big men Dallas will have to counter Cousins. Brendan Haywood has missed the last two games with a left ankle injury and Brandan Wright is out with a concussion.

The Mavs had a chance to send Thursday's game to overtime, but Rodrigue Beaubois missed two chances to tie the score in the closing seconds. Shooting guard Jason Terry was not on the court for the end, and coach Rick Carlisle said that was a "coach's decision."

Dallas escaped with two-point victories in both visits to Sacramento last season."

among active players in field goals made (behind Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan).
...Nowitzki became the first player in Mavericks history and 98th in NBA history to appear in 1,000 regular-season games.
...Nowitzki, whose first season in Dallas was in 1998-99, is the third-longest tenured player with his original team (L.A.L.’s Kobe Bryant 1996-97; San Antonio’s Tim Duncan 1997-98).

Sacramento Beats Dallas 110-97; Mavs’ Slump Continues - Fan Reaction.
By Clayton Browne, Yahoo! Contributor Network.

"The Dallas Mavericks lost to the Sacramento Kings 110-97 on Friday night in Sacramento. It was the Mavericks' second straight loss and the seventh in their last nine games. Fans in Big D are disconsolate as the team has clearly lost the chemistry that made them so tough on defense last year, and without the defensive stops and the resulting breaks, the offense is stuck in neutral as well. Coach Rick Carlisle has been trying different lineups to create a spark, but with only sporadic success. The solution to the problem is not obvious, and some players, including Jason Terry, are even speaking to the media about their unhappiness with the situation.

The Kings were clearly motivated and came out and set the tone in this game, shredding the Dallas defense 31-22 in the first quarter. It was 54-44 Sacramento at the half. Sacramento exploded for another 34 points in the third quarter and Dallas never seriously threatened from there.

Jason Terry led Dallas with 23 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Shawn Marion had 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Dirk Nowitzki added 13 points and 9 rebounds. Sacramento had a great team effort with 7 players in double figures, including Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton with 17 points each (9 boards for Evans).

Dallas drops to 23-19 on the season with the road loss. Sacramento improves to 14-26 with the victory, their second in a row and first in 10 tries against the Mavericks."

Clayton Browne lives in Austin, Texas and is a big-time NBA fan. He follows both the Mavs and the Spurs closely.

Kings end 10-game skid vs. Mavs with 110-97 win.
By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP)—"A rematch against the defending champion Mavericks showed how far the Sacramento Kings have come from a disastrous game in Dallas in Keith Smart’s sixth game as head coach.

Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton each scored 17 points to help the Kings end a 10-game losing streak against the Mavericks with a 110-97 victory on Friday night.

Rookie Isaiah Thomas added 14 points, including three 3-pointers in the third quarter, for the Kings, who last beat Dallas on Jan. 11, 1999. The worst of those losses came in the first meeting earlier this season when the defending champion Mavericks won 99-60 in Dallas less than two weeks after Smart replaced Paul Westphal as coach.

“‘I told the guys we would not be the same team when we see Dallas again,” Smart said. “I just knew with the work I’d put in with my staff we wouldn’t be the same team. We may lose the game, but we would not be the same team that showed up that time and only scored 23 points in the first half. I just knew we’d be better than that.”

That was clearly the case this game as Sacramento led for the final 45 minutes and topped 50 percent shooting for the second straight game and fourth time this season.

DeMarcus Cousins added 15 points in his return from food poisoning and the Kings had seven players reach double figures in the win.

“We did a good job of playing as a team tonight. Everything was really clicking,” Thomas said. “It was just an overall great team win. If we play together, hit the open guy and make the extra pass, we always play a lot better. That kind of motivates us to play even better defense. We just have to be consistent.”

Jason Terry scored 23 points to lead the Mavericks, who have lost six straight road games for the first time since November 1999. Dallas has lost seven of nine games overall to fall into seventh place in the Western Conference.

“It’s time for change,” Terry said. “You can only look at something for so long and you’re getting the same result so at what point are you going to change or are you going to ride it out. … We’re not a team right now. It shows so until we become a team and play together on both ends of the court, we’re not going to be very good.”

With victories over New Orleans and Dallas, the Kings are off to a strong start to a nine-game homestand that is the longest in franchise history. The homestand started a night after the City Council approved a plan to help finance an estimated $391 million arena to keep the Kings in town for at least another 30 years.

That has given Kings fans something to cheer about for a change for a last-place team that has missed the playoffs for the past five seasons.

Sacramento pulled away in the third quarter against a Dallas team that had lost the previous night in Phoenix. Thomas hit a pair of 3-pointers around a pretty drive from Evans to extend the lead to 78-61 midway through the third. Sacramento led by 16 after three quarters and coasted to the victory.

Francisco Garcia’s 3-pointer midway through the fourth extended the lead to 102-82 and allowed the Kings to become the second team to reach the century mark against Dallas in the past 21 games.

“We got it handed to us in Dallas,” forward Donte Greene said. “We were pretty upset about that. It was good to give it back to them.”

The Kings started off much better than they did in Dallas on Jan. 14, when they were held to a franchise-low 23 points in the first half of the stingiest defensive game in Dallas history.

The Kings took advantage of turnovers to get out on the break early and matched their first-half scoring total from January in just over 6 minutes as Evans’ two free throws gave Sacramento a 23-10 lead with 5:54 left in the quarter.

“It’s the thing that has been biting us lately, the turnovers, and we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. “We had early turnovers and we never got out of that hole.”

The Kings led by nine after one and were up 54-44 at the half after Marcus Thornton’s runner in the lane with 3.8 seconds left. They topped their total from January with 9:44 left in the third when Cousins made two free throws to make it 61-51.

Notes: Greene got his third start of the season for the Kings to match up with Dirk Nowitzki and scored 11 points. Nowitzki finished with 13 on 5-for-13 shooting.
… The Mavericks wrap up a stretch of three games in three nights on Saturday at Golden State.
… Dallas C Brendan Haywood sat out with a sprained left ankle.
… Grammy Award winner Drake was at the game."

Notebook: Kings 110, Mavericks 97
james Ham, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: Don't let the final score fool you, there was a blowout tonight in Sacramento. Surprisingly, it was the Kings who jumped all over the Dallas Mavericks in a lopsided, 110-97 blowout, in front a packed Power Balance Pavilion crowd.
Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton shared the scoring honors tonight for the Kings, each finishing with 17. DeMarcus Cousins clearly wasn't himself after missing Wednesday's game with food poisoning, but that didn't stop him from kicking in 15 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Jason Terry led all scorers with 23, in 26 minutes of action. Shawn Marion played a spirited third quarter, finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds for a winded Mavs team.

QUOTABLE: "I say move the ball. If I see that you're hunting, you have to come out. My job is to get you and let you play in the game. I don't want you over there on the sidelines. Your one of better players or you're a player on our team, I want you to play."
-- Coach Keith Smart on the Kings season long issue with isolation basketball.

THE STAT: The Kings used a well-balanced attack tonight against the Mavs, finishing with seven players with double-figure scoring.

TURNING POINT: It's hard to say what the turning point was in this one. I am going with the Mavs team flight, but maybe it was the bus ride to the arena. Last season's champs looked gassed from the get go. While they hung close in the first half, the young legs of the Kings were just too much down the stretch.

QUOTABLE II: "Tell everyone to bring their cowbells on Sunday."
-- Kings co-owner Gavin Maloof following the victory tonight.

HOT: The Kings starting backcourt of Thornton and rookie Isaiah Thomas played extremely well tonight, scoring a combined 31 points on 11-for-17 shooting in just 53 total minutes.

NOT: Vince Carter looked every bit of 35 tonight. After showing well in Phoenix yesterday, Carter was non-existent tonight in Sacramento, going scoreless in 17 minutes of action.

GOOD MOVE: Smart played the match ups tonight. Donté Greene received the starting nod at power forward over Jason Thompson. Clearly the move was an attempt to slow Dirk Nowitzki and the gamble paid off. The former MVP finished with just 13 points and nine rebounds in 29 minutes.

NOTABLE: The Mavs are eight games into a nine games in twelve night stretch. They looked worn out and it only get's worse as they finish their only back-to-back-to-back stretch of the season tomorrow night at Golden State.

UP NEXT: For the Mavs, Saturday @ Golden State."

UP NEXT: For the Mavs, Saturday @ Golden State.

Mavericks-Warriors Preview.
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN.

"Not much is going right for the Dallas Mavericks on this grueling stretch of three road games in as many nights.
The Mavericks will try to end their longest road losing streak in more than 12 years Saturday night when they take on the Golden State Warriors.
Dallas (23-19) probably expected better results in its lone stretch of three games in three nights. The Mavericks had won eight straight over Phoenix, Thursday's opponent, and 10 in a row over Sacramento, Friday's foe.
Instead the club's road losing streak has hit six - its longest since an eight-game slide Nov. 7-30, 1999, early in Dirk Nowitzki's second season. Dallas fell 96-94 to the Suns and 110-97 to the Kings.
"It's time for change," guard Jason Terry said. "You can only look at something for so long and you're getting the same result, so at what point are you going to change or are you going to ride it out? ... We're not a team right now. It shows, so until we become a team and play together on both ends of the court, we're not going to be very good."
The Mavericks had 17 turnovers Friday that led to 28 points for the lowly Kings, who led by as many as 21.
"It's the thing that has been biting us lately, the turnovers, and we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball," coach Rick Carlisle said. "We had early turnovers and we never got out of that hole."
Fatigue appeared to be a factor Friday for several key Mavs veterans - 33-year-old Nowitzki, 35-year-old Vince Carter and 38-year-old Jason Kidd. Nowitzki made 5 of 13 shots for 13 points, Carter failed to score after missing all five shots and Kidd was 2 of 8 for six points with four assists.
It's unclear what to expect from any of them against a Warriors team that has not played since a 110-92 home loss to Memphis on Wednesday. Golden State (15-21) features an energetic backcourt of 26-year-old Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry, who turns 24 next week.
Curry continues to be limited by a strained tendon in his right foot, and he and the Warriors will be looking to make amends after falling behind 21-4 on Wednesday. Golden State, which was outscored 52-26 in the paint, rallied to take the lead but trailed again by as many as 22 in the fourth quarter.
"As a coach, you don't want to have to coach energy, effort, passion," coach Mark Jackson said. "They outworked us, and the only way we got back into the game was because, even though we went small, that group competed and they worked. Just an embarrassing effort for us tonight."
The Warriors are in 13th place in the Western Conference standings, four games out of a playoff spot.
"Mathematically we are still in it, there is always a chance," Curry said. "It's going to be a tough task because we have a lot of games to make up; we have to go on a run. We are still focused on that goal."
Mavs starting center Brendan Haywood missed his third straight game Friday with a sprained ankle. He remains day to day.
Dallas had won six straight against the Warriors before losing the most recent meeting April 2, when Ellis scored 32 points in a 99-92 victory in Oakland."

Golden State Defeats Dallas 111-87; Mavs Lose 7th Straight Road Game: Fan Reaction.
By Clayton Browne, Yahoo! Contributor Network.

"The Dallas Mavericks were crushed by the lowly Golden State Warriors 111-87 on Saturday night, their seventh consecutive road defeat, and stretching their current slump to 8 losses out of the last 10 contests. Mavs fans are stunned and disappointed by the team's swoon, but they understand that this compacted season and all these back-to-back games are especially difficult on veteran teams like Dallas (and the Lakers, for example, who are also suffering a mid-season slump). We fans can only hope that the cagy Mavs' veterans are saving up their energy for a final late season surge.

This game was all Golden State as Dallas pretty much slept-walked through the whole contest. It was 26-15 at the end of the first quarter and 52-42 at the half. Things just got worse for the Mavs in the second half as they were outscored by seven points in each quarter to lose by 24.

Dirk Nowitzki was the leading scorer for Dallas with 22 points and 4 rebounds, and Jason Terry added 15 points and 5 assists. Golden State had five players in double figures. David Lee led the Warriors with 25 points and 9 rebounds, and Nate Robinson chipped in 21 points and 5 boards in the easy home win.

Dallas drops to 23-20 on the season with the loss, but fortunately the team gets a couple of days of much-needed rest before a home match up with the Washington Wizards on Tuesday, March 13. Golden State moves to 16-21 with the victory, and has to play back-to-back games as they travel to Los Angeles to play the Clippers on Sunday night."

Dallas Mavericks @ Golden State Warriors Post Game 43 Quotes "Happy 1000th Game, JET!"
by DOH in PGQ.
What the Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors said after Game Fourtythree of the Perfect Season.

Quotes
Mavericks
Coach Rick Carlisle

(Pregame) "It’s been kind of a blur and it hasn’t been much fun to this point, but tonight’s another night."

(On Sitting Kidd) "J-Kidd, it was the right move to sit him tonight. He's so important to us that it's tough to play without him. But we got to look at this on a big-picture basis. I'm disappointed, but not dismayed. We got to keep going. It just wasn’t a good idea for him to play."

(On the Game) "I feel like we battled pretty well for a lot of the game tonight, but the thing that happened for us is we were 8-for-25 in shots in the paint in the first half. We had great opportunities we couldn’t cash in on and we dug ourselves another hole. In the third when we were making a run, they rose up and hit some incredible shots and we couldn’t get enough going to answer. Ellis made some unbelievable shots in the third quarter. It was a bad combination. So, it’s a disappointing night."

(On the effects of 9-in-12 tonight) "It was tough but I'm not going to make any excuses about the schedule."

(On the Mavs) "It was tough and disappointing the way things went, but we’ve got to regroup. We’ve got a chance to practice Monday, so that’s an important day for us, and then three home games that are big games for us."

Dirk Nowitzki
(Only difference to yesterday: Kidd sat out)
(How awesome of y'all to go 2-7 in this 9-in-12 stretch....) "That was a great experience, wasn’t it? A lot of unexpected losses, obviously. You know, really what hurt us was the first couple of games out of the break. We just weren’t sharp enough coming out of the break, and it was a really tough stretch for us."

(Wait, why aren't you ready to commit seppuku just yet?!?) "If you look at the schedule, it seems actually decent now. We don’t have a back-to-back for at least two weeks. We’re gonna actually play some home games with a day of rest in between. We’re gonna play some teams that are right there with us in the standings. It’s gonna be a fun challenge the next two weeks, and we’ve just got to get better and make a run here."

Jason Kidd
(On sitting this one out instead of the Kings game) "That was the plan, but when we lost in Phoenix, we decided to go ahead and play in Sac. Taking this one off, plus we got two more days off, that gives me a nice three-day break before we play again."

Jason Terry
(Another day, another Loss - stop. in. my. mind.) "We can’t let this kill our spirit. We’re in a rough go, and you’ve gotta go through rough times to get to where you want to go. Hopefully we’ll look back at this stretch of the season and say, ‘Man, we got through it and persevered.’"

(Talk, talk, talk) "After that Phoenix loss, we aired some things out and we're all on the same page now. And hopefully we can go home now and right the ship."

(On how to get a W) "If we've gotta play the Lady Jets to get a win, we'll do that. I'm calling for a scrimmage on Monday. If we can can get one under our belt, now we'll get that feeling back and start to feel good about ourselves."

Lamar Odom
(On Losing) "We're just not playing well enough to win games. The chemistry is not there right now. We'll pick it up, this is a veteran team. Sometimes you have to take your lumps. We can bounce back."

Golden State Warriors
Coach Mark Jackson

(On The Game) "Thought we played with high energy and great effort. We started off the game and took control of it, which we understood was going to be crucial. Force the pace, force the tempo and followed the game plan defensively - a total team effort. Had great energy from our bench also."

(On The Mavericks Playing Three Games In Three Nights) "We are a no excuse basketball team, we are in the same situation whether we won or we lost. At the end of the day, we don't create the schedule. This is a team that was put in front of us, a team that is very capable of coming in here and beating us and we did what we should have done and that's leave here with a win and look forward to tomorrow night."

(On David Lee) "He was aggressive setting screens, posting up, and forcing one of the best players in the world to play defense. It really set the tone for us early which was big."

(On The Warriors' Bench And Nate Robinson) "The entire bench - when you get 48 points from the bench it's a collective effort. Nate was special. I loved the way he picked up full court, was aggressive defensively, was in attack mode offensively, made the right reads, and gave us a spark. Just what we needed, especially when Steph had to leave the game for a minute."

(On Stephen Curry) "He tweaked his ankle and we'll see how it is. He was able to go back in the game, fortunately for us we had a cushion and decided to make sure - we didn't need him the rest of the night."

(On Klay Thompson) "Our objective for our young guys is to get better. It would be a crime for him to be the same player today that he was a couple of months ago. I think every day of coming in early and staying late with our staff certainly makes him a better player and much more comfortable doing things today than he was a couple of months ago. Give him credit, there are a lot of young guys that stay the same and then there are some special ones that work hard and that are patient with the process and get better."

David Lee
(On The Game) "We just tried to come out and be aggressive. I took responsibility for the last game. First unit didn't come out and play the way we should have. Tonight I just tried to be aggressive coming out and our team did a great job getting stops and we got the lead early."

(On Nate Robinson's Play) "He's a great spark plug for us. He brings a lot of energy for us and he did a great job tonight. Couple of the biggest plays he had was on loose balls, where we were up 10 or 12 points and he came up with the ball and led us to a fast break. He's great for us on both ends when he brings that kind of energy."

Stephen Curry.
(On ankletweaking) "I just had a reaction because it's frustrating being the same ankle. I probably could have gone in and played but we had the game under control at that point, and knowing we have a game tomorrow in L.A., I had to keep that in mind."

(On not shutting it down) "I'll try it again Sunday, See how it feels."

Nate Robinson Crusoe..
(On The Third Quarter Run) "Coach really just preached on do whatever you have to do to get the win and that's what we did."

(On Rebounding From A Tough Loss Against Memphis) "For us every loss is tough, especially against a team who has beaten us three times. We just came in knowing that it was going to be a tough one. We came into practice, played hard, put shots up and guys continue to come in with a good spirit and we got the win."

(On Feeling It When He Gets Hot) "I feed off the crowd and my teammates. They give each guy confidence to go out there and do their job. They made it easy. Basketball if fun. So for me it just makes it easy to feed off the crowd and do my job by getting everyone involved and run the show. Also fill in for Stephen Curry or Monta Ellis when they're out."

Lee, Robinson lead Warriors to 111-87 victory.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)"Nate Robinson gave the Golden State Warriors a boost when Stephen Curry left the game after aggravating an injury.
David Lee scored 25 points, Robinson added 21 and the Warriors beat the road-weary Dallas Mavericks 111-87 on Saturday night.
"I fed off the crowd and my teammates," Robinson said. "It just made it easy and it's fun. Basketball is fun. I try to win for my teammates and to get everybody involved, run the show and fill in for Steph or Monta."
Monta Ellis added 20 points and eight assists for the Warriors, who won their second straight from Dallas following a six-game losing streak. Klay Thompson had 13 points in the Warriors largest margin of victory this season.
"Nate is a great spark plug for us," Lee said. "He brings a lot of energy, and he did a great job. A couple of the biggest plays he made were on loose balls when we were up 10 or 12, and he was able to come up with the ball that lead to a fast break."
Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points to lead the Mavericks, who lost their seventh straight on the road, including three in the past three nights. Jason Terry added 15 points and Rodrigue Beaubois had 12 as Dallas suffered its worst loss of the season.
"We're just not playing well enough to win games," Mavericks' forward Lamar Odom said. "The chemistry is not there right now. We'll pick it up, this is a veteran team. Sometimes you have to take your lumps. We can bounce back."
Curry, making his first start since returning from a tendon sprain in his right foot, added 10 points before leaving the game with 6:59 remaining to play in the third quarter with a mild sprain in his right ankle.
Curry limped to the end of the bench and slammed his right hand into a chair, more out of frustration than pain, before taking a seat. His foot was re-taped and he remained on the bench.
"I just had a reaction because it's frustrating being the same ankle," Curry said. "I probably could have gone in and played but we had the game under control at that point, and knowing we have a game tomorrow in L.A., I had to keep that in mind."
The Warriors never trailed in the game, taking a 20-point lead when Robinson made a pair of foul shots early in the final period.
Ellis and Robinson combined for 25 points in the third quarter to help the Warriors carry an 83-66 advantage into the fourth.
"It was tough but I'm not going to make any excuses about the schedule," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "We were 8 for 25 shooting in the paint in the first half. Those were great opportunities and we didn't cash in. Ellis made some unbelievable shots in the third quarter. It was a bad combination."
The Warriors got off to a much better start against the Mavericks than they did three days earlier against Memphis, when they fell behind by 17 points in the first quarter.
Lee was 6 of 10 from the field and scored 13 of his points in the opening period to help the Warriors open an 11-point advantage.
"He was aggressive, setting screens, posting up, forcing one of the best players in the world to play defense," Warriors' coach Mark Jackson said of Lee. "He really set the tone early for us, which was big."
NOTES: The Mavericks finished a stretch of nine games in 12 days.
... Terry appeared in his 1,000th game, becoming the 17th active player to do so. .
.. Mavs C Brendan Haywood missed his fourth game with a sprained ankle.
... The Mavericks completed their first back-to-back-to-back games since April 20-22, 1999.
... Mavs G Jason Kidd was given the night off and was not in uniform. "It was the right move to sit him," Carlisle said. "It's tough to play without him but we have to look at it on a big picture basis."

"THE FACTS: David Lee scored 25 points, Nate Robinson had 21 off the bench and Monta Ellis added 20 as the Golden State Warriors ran past the Dallas Mavericks 111-87 on Saturday night.
Playing for the third consecutive night and for the ninth time in 12 days, the defending NBA champion Mavericks ran out of gas against a Warriors team that hadn't played since Wednesday.
Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks with 22 points, while Jason Terry, playing in his 1,000th career NBA regular-season game, scored 15.
The Mavericks lost their third straight game and eighth in their past 10. They fell for the seventh consecutive time on the road.
Warriors point guard Stephen Curry returned to the starting lineup for the first time since spraining a tendon in his right foot on Feb. 22 -- he came off the bench the previous two games -- but suffered what the Warriors called a mild right ankle sprain with just 6:59 left in the third quarter. Before hurting the tendon, Curry had been plagued by a sprained ankle this season.
He is considered day-to-day, and Warriors coach Mark Jackson said he could have gone back into the game.
The Warriors' 24-point margin of victory was their largest of the season.

QUOTABLE: "I just tried to come out and be aggressive. I took a lot of responsibility for the last game, our first unit not coming out and playing the way we should have. Tonight I just tried to be aggressive coming out, and our team did a great job getting stops, and we got the lead early."
-- David Lee on scoring 25 points, three days after scoring just 11 in a loss to Memphis

THE STAT: The Warriors 54.1 percent from the field to just 37.3 for Dallas. Golden State hit 40 of 74 field goal attempts. Dallas was 28-for-75.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors closed out the third period on a 14-6 run, building a convincing 83-66 lead entering the fourth. Robinson, who came off the bench for an injured Curry, hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points during the spurt.

QUOTABLE II: "We're just not playing well enough to win games. The chemistry is not there right now. But it will pick up. It's a veteran team."
-- Mavericks forward Lamar Odom

HOT: After he scored 11 points in Golden State's 110-92 loss Wednesday to Memphis, Lee, via Twitter, apologized to Warriors fans for his and his team's performance. In the first quarter, he scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. He scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds in the first half, going 9-for-13 from the field. For the game, he shot 10-for-16 and had nine rebounds.

NOT: Mavericks guard Vince Carter, coming off a scoreless night against Sacramento, was out of the starting lineup and scored just seven points on 2-for-9 shooting. He has finished in single-digit points five of the past six games.

NOTABLE: Mavericks starting guard Jason Kidd got the night off to rest his body after the heavy recent work load.
... Dallas center Brendan Haywood (sprained left ankle) missed his fourth straight game.
... Warriors center Ekpe Udoh had two blocks and extended his streak of games with at least one block to 15.
... The Mavericks fell to 8-13 on the road this season.
... Dallas is now 11-5 against Golden State since falling to the Warriors in the 2007 playoffs.
... Warriors center Andris Biedrins was healthy but did not play. Jackson said it was because he did not match up well against Dallas' smaller lineup.

Wizards-Mavericks Preview.
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN.

"The Dallas Mavericks are happy to be home and happy to have a couple of days off from games.

They're probably also happy about their first two opponents this week.

The Mavericks will try to end a three-game slide as they host the NBA's worst teams starting Tuesday night against the Washington Wizards.

Dallas (23-20) has lost seven of nine within a 12-day span, a stretch it capped by dropping three games in as many nights on the road. The Mavericks fell Thursday in Phoenix, Friday in Sacramento and Saturday at Golden State.

"Well, we've gotta go forward," coach Rick Carlisle told the Mavericks' official website. "It was a murderer's stretch, a tough schedule and all that, but it's behind us and we've gotta focus on this next stretch of games. And the home games are critical for us."

Fatigue was clearly a factor on the grueling road stretch, with 38-year-old Jason Kidd sitting out Saturday's 111-87 loss to the Warriors. Vince Carter, 35, averaged 8.3 points on 28.6 percent shooting during the three-game skid and Dirk Nowitzki, 33, averaged 17.7 points - well shy of his 22.8 career mark.

There are encouraging signs at home, where Dallas is 15-7. Mavericks big men Brendan Haywood (ankle) and Brandan Wright (concussion) both practiced Monday and could be back.

"It's been a tough stretch here but the only way is really up, I think," Nowitzki said. "We've gotta use this homestand here to build some momentum and get some guys back, play with some energy on both sides of the floor, get our legs back and just play a lot sharper."

This three-game homestand should help Dallas since it begins with matchups against Washington (9-31) and Charlotte. Those teams are a combined 6-34 on the road, with the Wizards dropping to 3-15 after Monday's 112-97 defeat to San Antonio.

Wizards coach Randy Wittman wasn't happy that his club allowed the Spurs to shoot 62.2 percent in the first half.

"We can't have a first half from a defensive standpoint (like that)," Wittman said. "Again, until we get committed defensively for 48 (minutes), that's what it was."

JaVale McGee had 21 points and 15 boards while Jordan Crawford added 19 points for the Wizards, whose problems seem to be too numerous to list.

"It's not just the guards," guard John Wall said. "It's not just the bigs. It's everything. No help side, no closing back on shooters, and they score whenever they want to, basically. Until we started playing defense in the second half, a young team like us, we can't wait against a team like this."

Washington, 1-7 when playing the second half of a back-to-back set of games, has lost five of its last six meetings with Dallas.

Haywood's lone games against the team he spent his first eight full seasons with came last season as he totaled four points and three boards in two wins for the Mavs.

Yi Jianlian has played sparingly for Dallas since being signed as a free agent after appearing in 63 games for Washington in 2010-11."

Dallas Mavericks 107, Washington Wizards 98.
by Earl K. Sneed of Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavs finally notched another win, taking out the lowly Wizards.

"After a tough stretch of nine games in 12 days for the defending champion Dallas Mavericks, Tuesday night not only represented the start of a three-game homestand, it also marked a new opportunity.

After going 2-7 coming out of the All-Star break and dropping all three outings during their lone back-to-back-to-back, the Mavericks looked to get back on track against the Eastern Conference’s two worst teams. But before facing the lowly Charlotte Bobcats on Thursday night, the Mavs tried to build some much-needed momentum against the Washington Wizards.

“We’re looking forward to this week,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said before taking the court against the nine-win Wizards. “We know this week is going to be a challenging week, because we haven’t played well and we need to start playing well. The caliber of the opponent in terms of record-wise is a little bit deceiving, these two games, because these teams are both dangerous. So, we’re gonna have to play well. We’re gonna have to reestablish some momentum and that’s work. And we’ve got to do it whistle to whistle and play to play.”

Carlisle and his troops then stepped onto the hardwood floor at the American Airlines Center attempting to end their three-game losing streak while welcoming back big men Brendan Haywood (sprained left ankle) and Brandan Wright (concussion) from their layoffs due to injury.

Still, as Carlisle predicted in his pregame address, the Mavericks (24-20) would find themselves in a dogfight before escaping their home floor with a 107-98 victory.

After not seeing time in the past four games, Haywood rejoined the starting lineup next to forwards Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion, swingman Vince Carter and point guard Jason Kidd, who was fresh off a game hiatus himself due to rest and suiting up for a 1,300th time in his future Hall-of-Fame career. Meanwhile, Wright returned to the bench after missing six straight games.

With the big man back in the middle, Nowitzki and Carter were free to score at will in the early minutes of the opening quarter. But a 10-2 Wizards run would put the visiting team in front until the Mavs got a boost from the backup backcourt of Jason Terry and Rodrigue Beaubois before taking a 27-26 edge into the second period.

After stellar play by Terry and Beaubois at both ends of the floor, Nowitzki reassumed the scoring responsibilities in the second quarter while making his first seven shot attempts. Wright would then provide a highlight reel block as the Wizards (9-32) continued to attack the interior. And after getting a helping hand from Kidd’s alley-oop connection with Marion, Nowitzki and his 20-point first half would carry the Mavs to a 60-51 halftime margin.

Hitting 8-for-9 from the field through two quarters, Nowitzki led the Mavericks to 61.9 percent shooting compared to the Wizards’ 51.3 percent. Meanwhile, Beaubois pitched in 10 points off the bench as the Mavs matched the Wizards’ 24 points in the paint.

Nowitzki continued to terrorize the Warriors’ defense early in the third quarter as the lead reached double digits. But after the Mavs surged ahead by 12, the Wizards stayed close with frequent trips to the free throw line, using a 10-0 run to climb to within two while Nowitzki sat due to a fourth personal foul call.

“We just should have put the game away a little bit in the third quarter,” Nowitzki said. “We were up 10 coming out of the half and I thought we were really going to put a run on, but we just couldn’t separate enough from them. You’ve got to give them credit, they kept playing, they kept throwing in some stuff. And they got to the foul line at will. That really hurt us.”

Still, with a strong close to the quarter led by Terry and Carter, the Mavericks entered the final period with an 83-75 margin under their belt.

Much like earlier in the game, Beaubois’ energy at both ends of the floor translated to an advantage for the Mavs, scoring back-to-back buckets to give his team a 91-79 lead with 9:04 remaining while Kidd rested the entire last quarter.

“Beaubois’ game tonight, from start to finish, you look at offense, defense, decision-making, it’s one of the best games he’s had here,” Carlisle said. “It’s really significant because down the stretch I really wanted to keep Kidd out if possible and have Roddy and JET [Terry] finish. He did a great job, so there’s some real growth there.”

The Mavs would then turn to newcomer Lamar Odom, whose timely and-1 score came immediately after Nowitzki sat with his fifth foul.

But after a John Wall score and Jordan Crawford three, Carlisle was forced to take a timeout with the Mavs up 102-94 and 3:43 left to hold on. The Mavs countered with Terry at the other end as the star reserve kept the Wizards at a safe distance down the stretch while the Mavs brought an end to their three-game skid.

Leading the way for the Mavs was Nowitzki’s game-high 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Off the bench, Terry pitched in 24 points and Beaubois added 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

“I thought we had some guys play well. I thought Roddy gave us a lift,” Nowitzki said with high praise for the third-year guard, “and definitely that was great for us not to put J-Kidd back in there in the fourth. So, Roddy did a great job tonight.”

“I just tried to stay aggressive and just tried to play my game,” the young guard modestly said. “I did some good stuff, but I just need to keep working and get better.”

Carter registered 14 points and Marion’s 10 points and 13 rebounds came on a night in which he passed Antoine Walker (15,647) for 100th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

“I think it’s a great accomplishment. I’ve had some great teammates to help do that, but at the same time I think the bigger picture is we got the win,” Marion said of his personal milestone.

Trevor Booker led the Wizards with 20 points and 12 rebounds while Wall finished with 18 points and 10 assists. Meanwhile, the Mavs outshot the Wizards for the night, 50.6 percent to 44.3 percent, in addition to a 51-38 rebounding edge. Washington did, however, attempt 23 more free throws than the Mavs, making 29-of-38 from the charity stripe compared to Dallas’ 13-of-15.

Both teams also scored 40 points in the paint as the Mavs’ 12 turnovers led to 12 Wizards points and 10 Washington giveaways equaled 11 points for Dallas on the offensive end.

The Mavericks will now return to the practice court Wednesday before resuming action Thursday night at the American Airlines Center against Charlotte in the second showdown of their three-game homestand. The game will air locally on Fox Sports Southwest at 7:30 p.m. CT.
“Our energy was better tonight. We played a spirited game even though we didn’t play a perfect game. We’ve got to do things the next day and a half to position ourselves to do that again against Charlotte,” Carlisle said while looking ahead. “We’ve just got to keep climbing out of this hole we’ve gotten ourselves into with the nine in 12. It’s going to be work.”

Mavericks get much-needed win, 107-98 over Wizards
By STEPHEN HAWKINS.
DALLAS (AP) "Rodrigue Beaubois finished for the Dallas Mavericks, a good sign for a team trying to get back on track while also preserving veterans like Jason Kidd.
Beaubois made some acrobatic moves to keep balls in play and scored 19 points, including five straight in a clinching stretch early in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks got a desperately needed 107-98 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night.
"From start to finish, you look at offense, defense, decision making, it's one of his best game's he's had," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Really significant because down the stretch I wanted to keep Kidd out if possible. ... He did a great job, so there's some real growth there."
Kidd, only 10 days shy of his 39th birthday, wasn't needed in the fourth quarter.
Dirk Nowtizki scored 27 points and Jason Terry, who like Beaubouis played the entire fourth quarter, had 24. Vince Carter added 14, while Shawn Marion had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
The defending NBA champions had lost eight of their previous 10 games. There were three road losses in three nights before a short break leading into consecutive home games against the league's two worst teams.
"I thought Roddy gave us a lift," Nowitzki said. "We've got to work for everything we get and grind those wins out."
After Terry's short jumper early in the fourth quarter, Beaubois quickly followed with five consecutive points in less than a minute. That 7-0 run put the Mavs up 92-79 with 8 1/2 minutes left.
Beaubois made a 12-footer, then followed up Terry's miss with a putback layup and extended his personal run with a free throw on the next possession with 8 1/2 minutes left.
"We weren't playing that good so we needed this," Beaubois said. "I try to attack and play my game. I made jumpers and made some layups. I try to be aggressive but I'm also a point guard so I try to get other guys the ball. I'm learning."
Trevor Booker had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Wizards (9-32). John Wall had 18 points and 10 assists. Jordan Crawford and Nick Young had 15 points each.
"We competed," Wall said. "We just gave up too many easy baskets. We've got to figure out how to close."
The only team with fewer wins than Washington is Charlotte (6-34), which plays in Dallas on Thursday night before Southwest Division-leading San Antonio is in town Saturday night.
After being called for a foul against Young that led to two free throws and got the Wizards within 70-68 with 4:21 left in the third quarter, Beaubois more than made up for that on the next possession.
Shawn Marion's crosscourt pass appeared headed out of bounds when Beaubois leaped up near the sideline to grab it. While still in the air, Beaubois passed the ball to Vince Carter for a 3-pointer.
Beaubois had another nifty save late in the first quarter after Young stole the ball from Nowitzki. Young took off on a breakaway, but Beaubois hustled back and stripped the ball under the basket. He then grabbed the ball and managed to keep his feet up in the air above the baseline while throwing the ball out to Terry.
When the ball got back to the other end, Beaubois hit a long jumper right in front of the Mavericks bench for a 27-26 lead after the first quarter.
"I just liked the way Roddy was playing. You could tell the guys had lot of confidence in him," Carlisle said. "The only mistakes he really made were a couple of shots he turned down that he had. ... He's changing speeds, he's doing a great job guarding people. He's solid. His decision-making is improvement. This is big."
Dallas went ahead to stay in the second quarter, when they shot 82 percent (14 of 17 from the field). They ended the half with a 10-3 run for a 60-51 lead.
That half-ending run came after Nowitzki, who had made his first seven shots, missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2:55 left. But he had a 17-footer and two free throws in the final 44 seconds, giving him 20 points in the first half. He finished 10-of-14 shooting overall.
"Beaubois gave them a big lift," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "To come in off the bench with 19 points, that was a big thing that hurt us."

NOTES: Dallas scored 60 points in the first half for the fourth time this season, the first in 18 games - since 64 against Denver on Feb. 8. ... Washington is 3-16 on the road, including six losses in a row. ... Nowtizki had a four-point play with 5 minutes left in the third quarter. After Nowitzki got fouled making a 14-foot jumper, Crawford was called for a technical foul. Nowitzki made the technical free throw, then the freebie for being fouled for a 68-56 lead. ... Mavs C Brendan Haywood, who had missed the previous four games with a sprained left ankle, had six points and eight rebounds in nearly 25 minutes."

Notebook: Mavs 107, Wizards 98.
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: Facing a struggling road team playing on the second night of a back-to-back, the Dallas Mavericks took care of business Tuesday with a much-needed 107-98 victory against the Washington Wizards at the American Airlines Center. Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 points, Jason Terry had 24 off the bench and Rodrigue Beaubois added 19 for the defending champs, who halted a three-game skid.

Washington, tied for the fewest road victories in the league at 3-16, dropped its sixth straight away from home despite having six players in double figures and double-doubles from Trevor Booker (20 points, 12 rebounds) and John Wall (18 points, 10 assists). The Wizards are now 0-15 on the road this season when trailing at halftime and they are 1-8 on the second half of back-to-backs.

QUOTABLE: "Beaubois' game tonight from start to finish -- you look at offense, defense, decision-making -- it's one of his best games he's had here."
--Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle

THE STAT: The five starters for the Wizards have a combined 11 seasons of NBA experience (including this season), compared to 70 for the Mavericks' veteran starting unit.

TURNING POINT: After Washington scored 10 unanswered points to get within 70-68, Dallas pushed the lead back to 83-73 with buckets on six of its next eight trips: a 3-pointer by Vince Carter (14 points), a reverse by Ian Mahinmi, a finger roll by Carter, two jumpers by Terry and an athletic putback by Beaubois. The Mavericks led by double digits nearly all of the fourth quarter.

QUOTABLE II: "We came in here and I thought we fought them tooth and nail. Against good teams like this, your margin for error for us, being what we are is a young team, is small."
-- Wizards head coach Randy Wittman

HOT: Nowitzki knocked down his first seven shots and was 8-for-9 in the opening half, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 at the line for 20 points. Beaubois was 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 at the stripe in the first half. Dallas shot 82 percent (14-for-17) in the second quarter.

NOT: Jordan Crawford took a team-high 16 shots to score 15 points (5-for-16) for the Wizards. Lamar Odom was 1-for-6 and finished with more fouls (four) than points (three) for the Mavericks.

GOOD MOVE: Playing in his 1,300th career game, Jason Kidd showed he still had a few tricks up his sleeve during an 8-0 Dallas run late in the second quarter. On back-to-back possessions, he fired a pretty no-look pass to Brendan Haywood for a wide-open dunk and delivered an alley-oop toss to Shawn Marion from behind the 3-point line.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Marion contributed 10 points, a game- and season-high 13 rebounds and four assists. In addition to his 399th career double-double, Marion (15,649 points) passed Antoine Walker (15,647) for 100th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

NOTABLE: The Wizards attempted 23 more free throws (38-15) than the Mavs.
... Dallas dominated the battle of the boards, 51-38.
... The teams were dead even in points in the paint (40-40) and fastbreak points (17-17).
... Haywood returned from a four-game injury absence ( left ankle sprain) and tallied six points and eight boards.
... Dallas now has a 31-30 edge in the all-time series.

UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Thursday vs. Charlotte, Saturday vs. San Antonio.
For the Wizards, Thursday @ New Orleans, Friday @ Atlanta, Sunday @ Memphis.
