Notebook: lakers 109, Mavs 93.
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: Pau Gasol made almost every shot, kobe bryant made an impossible shot and the los angeles lakers made Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks miserable Wednesday in a 109-93 win at the American Airlines Center. The lakers halted the Mavericks' four-game winning streak and improved to 3-0 this season against the defending champs.

Gasol scored 27 points on 13-for-16 shooting and shared the team lead with nine rebounds. bryant had a game-high 30 points, including a highlight-reel three-point play in the third quarter. He caught an alley-oop pass from Gasol, got fouled in midair by Jason Kidd and still somehow flipped the ball backward into the basket while falling.

The lakers shot 58.4 percent from the field (9-for-18 from downtown) and destroyed Dallas by a 46-29 margin on the boards. Nowitzki led the Mavericks with his eighth double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds and Jason Terry added 23 off the bench.

QUOTABLE: "Our defense wasn't good enough. We gave up way too many wide-open shots and they had five or six guys who were really into it offensively. We have to do a better job."
-- Mavericks forward Lamar Odom, who was 0-for-3 and finished with one point, one rebound, one assist and one steal in nearly 24 minutes.

THE STAT: The lakers entered the game ranked last in the league in bench scoring at 20.7 points per game, but racked up 24 by halftime and finished with 36. The reserves were 6-for-12 from 3-point land and combined for 21 rebounds and 12 assists.

TURNING POINT: Dallas missed 15 of its 20 shots and was outrebounded 17-6 during a disastrous second quarter. los angeles took command with a 24-6 run that included four 3-pointers, two by Matt Barnes (11 points, nine rebounds) and one each by bryant and red-hot reserve Ramon Sessions.

QUOTABLE II: "We had breakdowns defensively. We had shot-making droughts and they were able to retake the lead and get a cushion. It was probably the difference in the game, but there were other breakdowns, too, and we simply just did not play well enough."
-- Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle on the second quarter.

HOT: The Mavericks were 6-for-8 from behind the arc in the third quarter.

NOT: The Mavericks were just 2-for-18 in the other three quarters.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: It seems only a matter of time before Sessions replaces Steve Blake as the starting point guard in the lakers' post-Derek Fisher era. Acquired in a March 15 trade with Cleveland, Sessions stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting (3-for-4 from 3-point range), a game-high nine assists and five rebounds in 29 minutes.

QUOTABLE III: "The kid, Sessions, made the game easy for everybody. You can see how his speed can help us, and his ability to play pick-and-roll and turn the corner and get in the teeth of the defense, and set guys up for easy, what I call HORSE shots. That's where they've got their feet set and it's like when you're in seventh grade and you're playing HORSE with somebody and nobody shoots off the dribble."
-- lakers coach Mike Brown.

NOTABLE: The Mavericks played without injured starters Brendan Haywood (sprained right knee) and Shawn Marion (sore left knee) for the third straight game.
... Kidd celebrates his 39th birthday on Friday.
... It was the 425th consecutive regular-season sellout (20,664) at the American Airlines Center, the longest active streak in the NBA.
... Dallas is 2-13 when trailing at halftime this season.
... The lakers are 11-2 when they reach the century mark.
... The Mavs had almost twice as many steals (13) as turnovers (seven).

UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Friday @ San Antonio, Saturday @ Houston.
For the lakers, Friday vs. Portland, Sunday vs. Memphis."

Mavericks-Spurs Preview.
By NOEY KUPCHAN.

"The San Antonio Spurs couldn't keep up with the Dallas Mavericks last week despite a double-double from Tony Parker.

They could be in for a rough road ahead with their four-time All-Star point guard possibly out of commission.

Parker is uncertain to be available as the Spurs open a brutal slate of games Friday night against a visiting Mavericks team seeking a third straight win in the series.

San Antonio (30-14) has won four of five, its only loss in that stretch coming by a 106-99 score at Dallas on Saturday. Parker had 13 points and 11 assists but was trumped by Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 27 while Jason Kidd recorded 14 points and 10 assists.

"It was a playoff battle. Anytime we see the Spurs it's a fun game, great atmosphere, both teams really trying to get the win. As expected, it was a physical game," Nowitzki said.

The Spurs bounced back from that defeat with a 116-100 win over Minnesota on Wednesday, but it may have come at a cost. Parker, averaging team highs of 19.6 points and 8.0 assists, exited with a strained left hamstring in the second quarter and didn't return.

While the injury was apparently mild, his teammates were concerned.

"It is very bad. Everybody knows how important Tony Parker has been for us right now," said swingman Manu Ginobili, who's appeared in just 16 games due to injury. "It is going to be difficult. We need to figure it out. Great teams figure it out. Whether you are missing a player or not you have to find a way."

The Spurs have gone 1-5 in their last six games without Parker, losing both such contests this season. His possible absence also comes at a less-than-opportune time given San Antonio's upcoming schedule.

The Spurs open their only back-to-back-to-back stretch of the season Friday and play five games in six days. Gary Neal, who scored 16 points versus the Timberwolves, is expected to start if Parker can't go. Ginobili would also spend time at the point.

"Gary did a great job (at point guard) for a 2-guard," coach Gregg Popovich said. "He's not a 1, but he kind of likes it for some strange reason. So we're happy he can do what he does at that position. Manu does a little bit, so the two of them share it."

The Mavericks (27-21) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a 109-93 loss to the los angeles lakers on Wednesday. Nowitzki had 26 points and 10 rebounds while Jason Terry scored 23, but Shawn Marion's absence seemed to be felt as he missed his third straight game with a sore left knee.

"We can't bellyache about guys being out with injuries," coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's one of the realities of the season. I'm not into that."

Dallas was outrebounded 46-29 and allowed the lakers to shoot 58.4 percent from the floor.

"Our defense wasn't good enough," forward Lamar Odom told the league's official website. "We gave up way too many wide-open shots and they had five or six guys who were really into it offensively. We have to do a better job."

The Mavericks had dropped seven straight on the road before winning 112-95 at Denver on Monday. Dallas has lost six of nine at the AT&T Center, including back-to-back defeats by an average of 17.0 points.

While the Mavericks are hoping to have Marion available, center Brendan Haywood (knee) is expected to miss his fourth consecutive contest."

<span style="color: #ff0000">Rapid Reaction</span>: Spurs 104, <span style="color: #004000">Mavs</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">87</span>.<br />
Comments By Tim MacMahon.<br />
<br />
&quot;How it happened: A magical blend of Dirk Nowitzki, defense and depth carried the Mavs to the franchise’s first title last season. Dallas was dreadful in each of those departments Friday night at the AT&amp;T Center.<br />
<br />
The Spurs, playing without All-Star point guard Tony Parker, had plenty to do with that, physically dominating Dallas while playing a beautifully skilled game.<br />
<br />
However, Nowitzki had arguably his worst performance since his horrific start of the season. He finished with 16 points, but he made only five of 21 shots from the floor. He was an embarrassing liability on the glass, grabbing only two rebounds.<br />
<br />
Nowitzki’s night ended after he was whistled for a technical foul with 2:04 remaining, when he vented some frustration by shoving Kawhi Leonard in the back. Lamar Odom still didn’t take off his warm-ups, collecting his first DNP-CD of his extremely disappointing season.<br />
<br />
With Dallas center Brendan Haywood sitting out his fourth consecutive game due to a sprained right knee, the Spurs punked the Mavs in the paint. San Antonio had outrageous edges of 54-34 on the boards, 21-7 in second-chance points and 50-16 in points in the paint.<br />
<br />
The Mavs’ bench, a longtime strength, was severely outplayed for the second consecutive game. Jason Terry had 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting, and the rest of the Mavs bench contributed only five points.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">What it means</span>: The Interstate 35 rivals split the season series, as the Mavs and Spurs both held serve on their home courts in the four meetings between the longtime Western Conference contenders. While the Spurs sit comfortably at second in the West standings, the Mavs are in jeopardy of dropping out of the top eight as they head to Houston for the butt end of a back-to-back. Dallas is part of a six-team pack within one game of each other fighting for the final five seeds.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">Bold play of the game</span>: Gary Neal ran off a couple of screens, caught the ball and fired over scrambling 7-foot Nowitzki. Neal didn’t call glass, but that’s the way the 3-pointer went down. The lucky bounce capped a 12-0 run at the end of the third quarter that gave the Spurs the lead for good. San Antonio stretched the spurt to 14 unanswered points by scoring the first bucket of the fourth quarter.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">Stat of the night</span>: The <span style="color: #004000">Mavs</span>, kings of the comeback during their championship run, are<span style="color: #ff0000"> 0-11</span> when trailing after three quarters on the road this season.&quot;<br />

3-pointer: <span style="color: #004000">Dirk Nowitzki</span> &#39;had a brutal night.&#39;<br />
Comments By Tim MacMahon.<br />
<br />
SAN ANTONIO–&quot;The spotlight after Friday night’s loss to the Spurs was on the Mavericks power forward who didn’t play.<br />
<br />
Good thing for the guy who logged 37 minutes at the position for the Mavs.<br />
<br />
“I had a brutal night,” <span style="color: #004000">Dirk Nowitzki</span> said.<br />
<br />
That description was accurate, unlike the vast majority of Nowitzki’s jumpers at the AT&amp;T Center. The perennial All-Star had perhaps his worst performance since his early-season struggles, scoring 16 points on 5-of-21 shooting and grabbing a grand total of two rebounds.<br />
<br />
Nowitzki missed his last 13 shots from the floor. He scored only four points in the second half, all on free throws.<br />
<br />
“I actually felt good at the beginning of the game,” Nowitzki said. “Just during the game, I couldn’t get the ball up in there. They were short. Wide-open 3s were even short. I just didn’t have enough to get the ball up today.”<br />
<br />
Added coach Rick Carlisle: “We have to work on getting him some cleaner looks. But he had some that he normally makes that he didn’t make tonight.”<br />
<br />
Dirk didn’t have a rebound until the fourth quarter. While he attributed the off shooting night to heavy legs, Nowitzki made no excuses for such a poor performance on the glass.<br />
<br />
“That’s my bad,” Nowitzki said. “I don’t care, you can always box out and rebound.”<br />
<br />
A few more notes from the Mavs’ second straight lopsided loss to a Western Conference contender:<br />
<br />
1. <span style="color: #004000">Matrix’s</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">return</span>: Want some good news? Shawn Marion&#39;s left knee didn’t bother him in his return from a three-game absence.<br />
<br />
“I felt good,” Marion said. “Once I got out there, I was able to stay warm and keep my body going. That’s pretty much it. I got a little winded there a couple of times, but for the most part, my wind was pretty good.”<br />
<br />
Marion was one of the more productive Mavs, scoring 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting in 31 minutes. He did a more than respectable job defending Manu Ginobili, who had 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting and seven assists.<br />
<br />
2. <span style="color: #ff0000">Custodian’s dirty work</span>: <span style="color: #006400">Brian Cardinal</span> made his mark on the game – or on Tim Duncan’s face, at least.<br />
<br />
“The Custodian” was called for a flagrant foul when he inadvertently raked Duncan in the face, sending the Spurs legend sprawling to the floor. That was the only statistic recorded by Cardinal in 4:20 on the floor, during which the Spurs outscored the Mavs by 10 points.<br />
<br />
As you might imagine, <span style="color: #006400">Cardinal</span> wasn’t exactly a popular guy at the AT&amp;T Center, drawing the wrath of the Spurs faithful. Duncan shrugged it off after the game – “That’s just basketball,” he said – but San Antonio’s Stephen Jackson had some choice words for <span style="color: #006400">Cardinal</span>.<br />
<br />
“To me, it was a dirty play,” Jackson told the San Antonio Express-News. “When you can’t play no more, I guess all you can do is go out and try to hurt people.”<br />
<br />
3. <span style="color: #004000">Kidd’s</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">birthday bummer</span>: The Spurs spoiled <span style="color: #006400">Jason Kidd&#39;s </span><span style="color: #ff0000">39th birthday</span>.<br />
<br />
For a few minutes, it appeared it might be a storybook birthday celebration for Kidd, who got the hot hand from 3-point range to briefly give the Mavs the lead in the third quarter. Kidd ended up with an unusual line in the box score for him: 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, seven rebounds and only one assist. It’s only the second time in Kidd’s career he had only one assist while playing more than 30 minutes.<br />
<br />
Nevertheless, Kidd did have one good reason to celebrate.<br />
<br />
“I’m still in the thirties,” <span style="color: #006400">Kidd</span> cracked.&quot;<br />
<br />
<br />

Scout doubts <span style="color: #004000">Mavs</span> as legit title contender.<br />
Comments By Tim MacMahon.<br />
<br />
&quot;A scout&#39;s take on the <span style="color: #004000">Mavs</span>, from Marc Stein&#39;s ESPN.com Weekend Dime, which is required weekly NBA reading:<br />
<br />
&quot;I see them as the Orlando of the West right now. Could they knock the Thunder off in Round 2? Sure. They could pull that off. But to battle through three rounds to get back to the Finals? I have my doubts.<br />
<br />
&quot;They&#39;re dangerous, don&#39;t get me wrong. They did win the championship last year. But I just haven&#39;t seen the support for Dirk [Nowitzki] and [Jason] Terry. There&#39;s a lot of pressure on those guys to perform. If they&#39;re a little bit off, Dallas starts to look ordinary.<br />
<br />
&quot;<span style="color: #004000">Rick [Carlisle]</span> has them very, very well prepared defensively. They haven&#39;t missed a beat without Tyson Chandler and that&#39;s a real credit to the players and the coaching staff. I [also] really like the way Rick puts his players in position to make plays. He&#39;s an outstanding half-court coach. But I haven&#39;t seen the same hunger [as last season]. I don&#39;t think there&#39;s enough gas left in the tank. Dirk and Terry need some help.<br />
<br />
&quot;I thought <span style="color: #004000">[Lamar] Odom</span> would be helping more by now. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but he just doesn&#39;t look interested. Early on you could understand that there was some adjustment involved. And he seems like a pretty sensitive guy. But he just hasn&#39;t turned the corner. Whether it&#39;s because he&#39;s got other priorities in his life or the transition [from the Lakers to Dallas] has been too much, he doesn&#39;t look fully invested in the program.&quot;</strong></div>

Spurs beat Mavericks without injured Parker.
SAN ANTONIO (AP)"The San Antonio Spurs finally won without Tony Parker, though they don't want to get used to it.
Manu Ginobili had 11 points and seven assists, sparking an unselfish attitude that helped the Spurs roll to a 104-87 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night.
"It was a team victory," Ginobili said. "We didn't have Tony. Tony has been leading us the last 40 games. He's been amazing, scoring 30 points in a lot of games, dishing 10 assists, and we didn't have him today. . . It was a great team victory."
Parker, who missed his third game of the season, sat out with a strained right quadriceps. The Spurs were also without backup center Tiago Splitter, who had mid-back spasms.
Their absences seemed to inspire rather than dampen the Spurs' spirits. They had 28 assists, two shy of their season high, and outrebounded the Mavericks 54-34 in a physical matchup with their in-state rivals.
"If you have to do it because Tony is struggling or not feeling well, we got to do it," Ginobili said.
Ginobili started at point guard in place of Parker, picking up assists on back-to-back layups by DeJuan Blair that gave the Spurs an 8-4 lead with 8:08 left in the first quarter. Blair did his part, finding a driving Kawhi Leonard for a layup that gave the Spurs a 12-8 lead.
Danny Green led the Spurs with 18 points and Tim Duncan added 15 as six Spurs players finished in double figures.
The early sharing allowed the Spurs to take a 24-21 lead while shooting 50 percent from the field in the first quarter. San Antonio maintained its advantage throughout the game with the exception of a two-minute spurt by Dallas in the third quarter.
"Once they made the run, we were taking the ball out of the basket too often," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "When you do that, it's hard to push the ball. When the ball goes in, a team can set their defense.
"When we were rebounding and getting it out in the third, we were able to make up some ground even though Dirk (Nowitzki) had a tough shooting night in the second half."
Nowitzki had 16 points on 5-of-21 shooting and did not have any rebounds through the first three quarters. He finished with two rebounds.
"Everybody plays Dirk hard and physically," Carlisle said. "We have to work on getting him some cleaner looks."
Nowitzki was hounded by several Spurs throughout the game, but newly signed Boris Diaw proved the most effective defender for the Spurs. Diaw played 16 minutes after signing with the Spurs earlier in the day. The 6-foot-8, eight-year veteran only had two points, but had three rebounds and guarded Nowitzki primarily.
"I thought he did a really good job on Dirk," Duncan said. "He was physical with him. He contested every shot he took and made life difficult for him. I thought he was great tonight."
Despite Nowitzki's struggles, the Mavericks battled back to open the second half. After trailing for much of the game, the Mavericks opened the third quarter with a 15-6 run while the Spurs struggled offensively.
Jason Terry's 18-foot jumper with five minutes remaining in the third gave the Mavericks a 60-58 advantage, their first lead since 4-2 two minutes into the game. The Spurs responded quickly, however, going on a 22-3 run to gain a decisive advantage behind consecutive 3-pointers from Ginobili and Gary Neal to close the period.
It was the fourth and final meeting of the lockout-shortened. All the victories came on each team's home court.
Both sides displayed the raw intensity that has defined their rivalry.
"They obviously did not want to lose the season series so they came out with a little more fire," Nowitzki said.
Terry taunted the crowd by "gliding" like a jet after an early 3-pointer and was jawing with fans at courtside during the second half. Terry led the Mavericks with 18 points, Jason Kidd had 14 and Shawn Marion added 13.
Terry's intensity was matched by the Spurs' Stephen Jackson, who was jawing with several Mavericks after Duncan fell to the floor after being fouled.
Duncan went down three times in the first half, jamming his neck after running into Ian Mahinmi's chest and falling over some photographers after saving a ball. Duncan also went down in the second quarter when Brian Cardinal attempted to swipe the ball and instead raked Duncan's right eye. The normally mild-mannered Duncan drove the lane and dunked on the ensuing play, staring at Cardinal with a discontented look.
"I feel good, I feel good," Duncan said. "It was a physical game and that's basketball game for you. I feel good."
Lamar Odom did not play due to a coach's decision.
"It's something that I talked to Lamar about both yesterday and today," Carlisle said. "That I was going to look at a different rotation tonight."
NOTES: Parker missed his third game of the season and second in two weeks. He sat out the Spurs' 120-109 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers with a strained right quadriceps. Parker also did not play due to a coach's decision on 137-97 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Feb. 21. .
. . San Antonio native Eric Dawson played the final minute of the game, scoring four points. He hit a 15-foot jumper on the ensuing play after blocking a shot.

Notebook: Spurs 104, Mavericks 87.
By Tim Price, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: Danny Green scored 18 points in a starter's role for San Antonio and Matt Bonner came off the bench for 14 points after hitting 4-of-5 3-pointers as the Spurs took the floor without the injured Tony Parker and defeated the Dallas Mavericks anyway, 104-87 on Friday at AT&T Center.

Manu Ginobili joined Green in the backcourt and started at point guard in place of Parker, and he had 11 points and seven assists for the Spurs (31-14).

More significantly, the Spurs hounded Dirk Nowitzki with a defensive effort that included Boris Diaw, who San Antonio just signed yesterday after his buyout in Charlotte. Nowitzki shot 5-of-21 for 16 points and two rebounds (Dallas was outrebounded by 20). He showed his frustration late in the game when he pushed Spurs rookie Kawhi Leonard in the back on a rebound and said something to referee Kevin Fehr for a technical.

Dallas (27-22) shot 31 percent in the second half and have lost consecutive games by double digits to the Lakers and now San Antonio. Lamar Odom was the only healthy player for the Mavericks not to play.

QUOTABLE: "I thought the overall team defense was pretty good. That was probably the best part of the game. (Diaw) did a fine job (on defense). No matter who was out there, we were pretty aggressive."
-- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich

THE STAT: The Mavericks got outrebounded by 17 against L.A., and were horrendous inside tonight. In addition to being outrebounded by 20 (they had four offensive rebounds), they were outscored 50-16 in the paint on a night when the Spurs were missing their usual number of layup opportunities from the injured Parker (tight left hamstring) and also had steady post player Tiago Splitter (mild back spasms) in street clothes. Dallas had Shawn Marion back on the court after missing three games with a sore knee, but the Mavs still are missing Brendan Haywood, who sat for the fourth time with a right knee sprain.

TURNING POINT: The Spurs started the second half with a seven-point lead, but the Mavericks wiped that away and took a 63-58 advantage when Jason Terry hit a 3-pointer with a little more than four minutes left in the third quarter. However, the Mavs missed their final nine shots of the quarter -- including three in a row by Marion -- and watched the Spurs close out the quarter with 12-straight points. The beginning of the fourth quarter wasn't much better when Stephen Jackson hit a three and gave San Antonio a 10-2 start, marking a 22-2 run.

QUOTABLE II: "I talked to Lamar (Odom) about ... a different rotation tonight. We wanted Marion on Ginobili. The way it happened with Ginobili starting, we started Shawn. It tweaked the original plan. The thing that it shows us is that Lamar's minutes are valuable to us." -- Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle.

QUOTABLE III: "I had a brutal night. During the middle of the game I just could not get the ball in the rim. A lot of my shots were short. I did not have enough to get the ball in tonight." -- Nowitzki.

HOT: Bonner came back from his only missed game of the season when he was down with back spasms in the Spurs' victory over Minnesota on Wednesday. He was 4-of-5 from the floor and 5-of-7 overall, and the Spurs bench shot 16-of-26 overall.

NOT: Nowitzki's 5-of-21 night was his worst since Feb. 1 when he was 2-of-15 in a loss against Oklahoma City.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Tim Duncan had his 725th career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. But he may not play Saturday night in New Orleans because the Spurs are in the middle of three games in three nights.

GOOD MOVE: The Spurs played tight one-on-one defense on Nowitzki and threw in some late double teams to get him off balance after he went 3-of-5 in the first quarter. Throwing defensive combinations that included Leonard, Jackson, Duncan, DeJuan Blair, Green -- but particularly Diaw -- forced Nowitzki to go 2-of-16 after the first quarter. Diaw used his 6-foot-8, 235-pound body to cramp and bump Nowitzki.

BAD MOVE: The Mavericks had moderate success pestering Gary Neal when Neal was forced over to play point in Parker's absence. But the game really got loose from Dallas when Ginobili directed the attack. His penetrations gave Bonner room past the 3-point line. Ginobili finished with seven assists.

ROOKIE WATCH: Leonard scored 12 and had eight rebounds in another start, but Eric Dawson, who grew up in San Antonio enjoyed his best game since signing a pair of 10-day contracts with three-straight baskets in garbage time.

NOTABLE: Brian Cardinal was called for a flagrant foul-one when his swipe on the ball came in high and popped Duncan on the face. On the possession the Spurs were awarded, Duncan got the ball back and put in a driving one-handed slam over Ian Mahinmi, then he stopped and glared at Cardinal. ... The teams split the season series 2-2.

Mavericks-Rockets Preview.
By KATE HEDLIN.
"After winning the NBA title last season, the Dallas Mavericks are struggling to stay in playoff position in the crowded Western Conference.
Their next opponent has a vested interest in those woes continuing.
The Mavericks will try to avoid their second three-game skid this month when they visit the Houston Rockets in the teams' first meeting this season.
Dallas entered the All-Star break vying for a top four seed in the West, but has gone 6-9 since returning.
The Mavericks had a four-game win streak snapped Wednesday by the Los Angeles Lakers before falling 104-87 at San Antonio on Friday. Dallas (27-22) is among six teams within one game of each other fighting for the final five playoff spots.
Poor defense has been to blame for the last two defeats. After allowing the Lakers to shoot 58.4 percent, the Spurs shot 48.9 and outscored the Mavericks 50-16 in the paint.
Dirk Nowitzki had one of his worst games of the season Friday, finishing with 16 points on 5-of-21 shooting. His two rebounds matched his lowest total of the season.
"I had a brutal night," he told the league's official website. "During the middle of the game, I just could not get the ball to the rim. A lot of my shots were short. I did not have enough to get the ball in tonight."
Dallas didn't have much depth inside behind Nowitzki, who didn't have a rebound through the first three quarters. Brendan Haywood sat out his fourth straight game with a sprained right knee while Lamar Odom did not play due to a coach's decision.
"It's something that I talked to Lamar about both yesterday and today," coach Rick Carlisle said. "That I was going to look at a different rotation tonight."
San Antonio outrebounded the Mavericks 54-34 after Los Angeles had a 46-29 advantage on the glass.
Those struggles inside could be an issue against Houston, which took advantage of its last opponent in the paint.
The Rockets (26-22) are trying to stay among the top eight spots in the West despite missing two starters from their backcourt.
Houston followed Tuesday's victory over the Lakers with another solid defensive effort in a 109-83 win over Golden State on Thursday.
It was the fourth time in five games the Rockets held an opponent under 100 points after giving up 108.3 over the previous eight.
"Every team has an identity and every team has strengths and weaknesses," coach Kevin McHale said. "We are able to cover up our weaknesses better now. I think we are more aware of exactly what we are doing and we are taking away, for the most part, the easy baskets continually."
The defensive improvement can be credited in part to the play inside. On Thursday, Chandler Parsons had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Samuel Dalembert added 15 points and 10 boards.
Dalembert has averaged 12.3 points and 8.5 rebounds in the last 11 games.
"Sammy's been really good," McHale said. "When you get Marcus Camby, Patrick (Patterson) and (Luis) Scola working on the defense, and those bigs are active like that, it gives us a huge different look."
The Rockets have lost four straight to the Mavericks and seven of nine, but the last three meetings have been decided by an average of 5.3 points.
Kyle Lowry (bacterial infection) and Kevin Martin (shoulder) both sat out Thursday and McHale said there is no timetable for their return.

Nowitzki, Terry lift Mavs past Rockets in OT.
By CHRIS DUNCAN.
HOUSTON (AP)"Dallas coach Rick Carlisle told his team before Saturday night's game in Houston that the playoffs were starting right now, and the Mavericks responded with a pivotal victory.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points, Jason Terry added 24 and Brandan Wright had a career-high seven blocks to help the Mavericks beat the Rockets 101-99 in overtime.
The Mavericks came into the game with only a half-game lead over Houston, Utah and Denver in the tightly bunched Western Conference standings. Carlisle emphasized the importance of the game in his pregame message to his team, and the defending champions took it to heart.
Especially Terry, who scored 14 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime.
"He said it was a playoff game," Terry said, "and that's all I needed to hear."
Shawn Marion had 12 points and a season-high 15 rebounds and Wright scored 14 points for the Mavericks, who beat Houston for the fifth straight time.
This meeting took on a postseason feel, with 17 lead changes, 15 ties and a rowdier-than-usual crowd at the Toyota Center split between fans of both teams. Nowitzki needed four stitches to seal a cut over his right eye, another sign of the game's intensity.
"This kind of game, you have to grind it out," Nowitzki said. "But we hung in there and found a way at the end to win, even though it wasn't a pretty game."
Goran Dragic scored 24 points, and Luis Scola added 19 for the Rockets, who had all five starters in double figures.
"You can't expect much more than we had today," Scola said. "We needed this game. It's a shame we weren't going to have it."
Nowitzki split two free throws with 10.9 seconds to go to put the Mavericks up 91-88, but Chandler Parsons swished a 3-pointer over Jason Kidd to tie it with 3.3 seconds remaining. Kidd tried a lob to Wright on a set inbound play, but Courtney Lee swatted it away and Terry's last-second shot from the free-throw line bounced off the rim.
The Mavericks took a 97-93 lead in overtime. Scola sank two free throws to cut the deficit to two and Lee hit a long jumper that initially appeared to be a 3-pointer. But the officials reviewed the shot and ruled that Lee's foot was over the line, and the game was tied at 97-all with 90 seconds left.
Dragic then was whistled for an offensive foul for pushing off Nowitzki. The Dallas star was cut over his right eye and went to the bench for stitches and a bandage. Terry then hit a pull-up jumper with 36 seconds to go, and Wright blocked Lee's jumper on Houston's next trip.
Nowitzki sank two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to make it 101-97. With the points, Nowitzki moved past Charles Barkley and into 19th place on the NBA's career scoring list (23,758)."That's obviously great," said Nowitzki. "Charles was always my hero."
Dragic drove for a reverse layup, and the Mavericks were called for a backcourt violation, giving the Rockets one more chance to tie it.
Chase Budinger missed a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer, and the Mavericks beat Houston for the 12th time in the last 16 meetings.
"It was the biggest win of the year for us," Carlisle said.
The Mavericks won for only the second time in their last 10 road games, despite getting outrebounded 52-38. Houston went 9 for 25 from 3-point range (26 percent), but only 37 of 96 (38.5 percent) overall.
"We battled hard out there, but we just could not get it," Houston coach Kevin McHale said. "We just could not keep it going."
The Rockets led for much of the first half, but Kidd hit back-to-back 3s - one from six feet beyond the arc - during a 12-4 Mavericks' run in the second quarter. The Mavericks surged ahead with Nowitzki on the bench, and he returned for the final two minutes of the half.
Parsons just beat the buzzer with a layup then cut Houston's deficit to 56-54 at the break. Nowitzki scored 16 points in the first half, then made four shots in the first six minutes of the third quarter.

Notes: The Mavericks are 15-1 when scoring 100 points this season.
... The Mavs' bench outscored Houston's reserves 44-13.
... Yao Ming and his wife, Ye Li, sat courtside with 22-month-old daughter Yao Qinlei. The girl will turn 2 on May 21.
... The in-state rivals were meeting for the first time this season. They'll play again Tuesday night and on April 18, both times in Dallas."

Notebook: Mavericks 101, Rockets 99.
By Matt Miller For NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: With the possibility of missing the playoffs creeping into the minds of the defending champions, the Dallas Mavericks earned what head coach Rick Carlisle called their "biggest win of the year."

Dirk Nowitzki scored a game-high 31 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Jason Terry added 24 points on 9-for-16 shooting off the bench to lead the Mavericks to a thrilling 101-99 overtime victory over the Rockets on Saturday at Toyota Center.

Goran Dragic paced Houston's attack with 24 points, eight assists and five boards, while Luis Scola poured in 19 points to go with six rebounds and four assists.

Dallas (28-22) blocked a season-high 15 shots and limited Houston to 38.5 percent shooting from the field to halt a two-game skid. Houston (26-23), meanwhile, has lost nine of its last 14 contests to drop to ninth place in the Western Conference.

QUOTABLE: "It's the biggest win of the year for us. It really is. We were fighting back all night ... and the guys just kept hanging in there. ...These are big games, because ... one win or loss and you can move up or down three or four spots."-- Carlisle.

THE STAT: The Rockets outrebounded the Mavericks 52-38 (16-5 offensively), scored 18 more second-chance points (25-7), netted eight more fast-break points (10-2), connected on three more 3-pointers (9-6), made the same amount of field goals and still lost.

TURNING POINT: Dallas had the ball and a 97-95 advantage with less than two minutes remaining in overtime when Jason Kidd used a pump-fake to earn a wide-open look at a 3-pointer. Kidd's shot drew iron, however, and Courtney Lee (16 points, five boards) rose up and hit a deep 2-pointer on the other end to knot the game at 97 with 1:30 left in the extra session. The Rockets had an opportunity to regain the lead after Shawn Marion missed a hook shot, but Dragic picked up a charging foul to squander that possession. The Mavericks did not waste their next possession, though, as Terry connected on a mid-range jumper that put Dallas ahead for good. Lee tried to tie the game with his own mid-range shot, but Mavericks forward Brandan Wright (career-high seven blocks) deflected the ball off-course with his fingertips.

TURNING POINT II: The Mavericks were closing in on the win, leading 90-88 with 10.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but Nowitzki missed one of two free-throw attempts to keep Houston's deficit at one possession. The Rockets took full advantage of the German's rare miss as Chandler Parsons (12 points, 11 rebounds) drilled a trey from the top of the key with 3.3 seconds remaining, sending the game into overtime.

HOT: Terry willed the Mavericks to a much-needed victory with timely shot-making. The league's top fourth-quarter scorer netted 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting in the fourth period and overtime.

QUOTABLE II: "I love playing in this building. It's a great shooting background, and I'm very comfortable here. It's just a situation, again, where my team needs me to step up. They said it was a playoff game, and that's all I needed to hear."-- Terry on his propensity for delivering in the clutch when playing inside Toyota Center.

NOT: Houston received little offensive production from its bench, which combined for only 13 points on 25.0 percent (6-for-24) shooting and two assists. Dallas' reserves teamed up to net 44 points and distribute eight assists.

BAD MOVE: The Mavericks committed an eight-second violation with six seconds remaining in overtime, handing Houston one final chance to win or extend the game. Fortunately for Dallas, Chase Budinger's buzzer-beating corner 3-pointer did not fall.

NOTABLE: Nowitzki (23,758 points) passed TNT analyst Charles Barkley (23,757) for 19th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list when he sank a free throw with 18.5 seconds remaining in overtime.
... Rockets guard Kevin Martin (strained right shoulder) missed his seventh consecutive game.
... The Mavericks played without Brendan Haywood (sprained right knee) for the fifth consecutive game, but Carlisle did not rule out the possibility that Haywood could return to Dallas' lineup Tuesday.
... Saturday's game featured 15 ties and 17 lead changes.
... Mavericks forward Lamar Odom finished with two rebounds and one turnover in 13-plus minutes on the floor one night after receiving his first career DNP-CD.
... Kidd has handed out 34 assists and committed only four turnovers over his last seven games.
... Marion pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds.
... Dallas improved to 11-6 this season on the second night of a back-to-back set.
... The Mavericks have won five consecutive meetings with the Rockets.
... Dallas is now 15-1 when it scores at least 100 points.
... Houston fell to 3-15 when trailing at halftime.
... The Rockets have grabbed at least nine more rebounds than each of their last four opponents.
... Parsons has recorded a double-double in two straight games.

&quot;<span style="color: #004000">Dirk Nowitzki&#39;s </span>right eye was proof of the intensity between the <span style="color: #004000">Dallas Mavericks</span> and Houston Rockets last weekend.<br />
<br />
Nowitzki needed four stitches to close a cut for the <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span>, <span style="color: #ff0000">who defeated the Rockets for the fifth straight meeting </span>as these teams get ready for Tuesday night&#39;s rematch in <span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span> (<span style="color: #ff0000">28-22</span>)<span style="color: #ff0000"> won <span style="text-decoration: underline">101-99</span> in <span style="text-decoration: underline">overtime</span> </span>at Houston (<span style="color: #ff0000">27-23</span>) on Saturday in the <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks&#39;</span> most recent game. The contest featured 17 lead changes, 15 ties, a rowdy Rockets crowd and an incident in which <span style="color: #004000">Nowitzki</span> was elbowed in the face by Goran Dragic.<br />
<br />
&quot;I just had a few stitches and I&#39;m not for sure how it happened but I think it was Dragic and it was really a huge play for us down the stretch,&quot; Nowitzki said. &quot;I guess he elbowed me in the face and the ref was right on it, and called the offensive foul. And that was a big play in the game. I thought it was Dragic, but it is what it is.&quot;<br />
<br />
That was the first of three meetings this season between these Southwest Division teams involved in a tight race to reach the playoffs. The <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> are in fifth place in the Western Conference and the Rockets are tied with Utah and Denver for spots seven through nine.<br />
<br />
&quot;We&#39;re fighting now,&quot; <span style="color: #004000">Dallas guard Jason Terry</span> said. &quot;We&#39;re fighting every night we go out on the floor. Each game is very critical for us, as far as playoff positioning. It&#39;s been a tough season, but overall I like the effort of everybody. We&#39;re doing what we have to collectively as a group to have success.&quot;<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Nowitzki </span><span style="color: #ff0000">scored 31 points</span> and<span style="color: #004000"> Terry</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">added 14</span> of his 24 after the third quarter in a game coach Rick Carlisle[/color] called the <span style="color: #004000">Mavs&#39; </span>&quot;<span style="color: #ff0000">biggest win of the year</span>.&quot; The Rockets had all five starters in double figures, with Dragic scoring 24 and Luis Scola adding 19.<br />
<br />
While <span style="color: #004000">Dallas </span>hasn&#39;t played since, Houston comes to town after needing overtime to get past lowly Sacramento 113-106 at home on Monday. Patrick Patterson scored a career-high 24 as the Rockets rallied from a 16-point deficit.<br />
<br />
&quot;Patrick played great,&quot; coach Kevin McHale said. &quot;That&#39;s the Patrick that we need to see all the time. He was just fantastic.&quot;<br />
<br />
Dragic left with about a minute left in overtime with an ankle injury and was helped to the locker room. Dragic said it is a &quot;minor sprain&quot; and that X-rays on it were negative.<br />
<br />
The point guard&#39;s absence forced Earl Boykins, signed earlier in the day to a 10-day contract, into the game to make four clutch free throws in the final 21 seconds. Boykins finished with 10 points and five assists in his first action of the season.<br />
<br />
&quot;This is definitely a unique situation, but when you&#39;ve been around as long as I have, you know how to prepare to play in the NBA even when you&#39;re not in the NBA,&quot; Boykins said. &quot;It takes a great deal of confidence to give someone the ball who you haven&#39;t seen all year (and be) confident that they can make free throws. It&#39;s a lot easier to play when your teammates have that kind of confidence.&quot;<br />
<br />
The last two meetings between these teams have gone to overtime and the previous two matchups were decided by a combined nine points.&quot;<br />

Lamar Odom picks up sluggish Mavs.
Forward shows signs of pulse against Houston as Dallas works on consistency.
By Jeff Caplan|ESPNDallas.com.

DALLAS--"Believe in electric headbands? The one Lamar Odom first snapped around his head Tuesday night during pregame warmups and wore throughout the game seemed to send a surge through the struggling forward at a most opportune time.

Perhaps drawing strength from his headband, Lamar Odom played aggressive basketball and boosted the Mavs in Tuesday's win over the Rockets.Who knows if Odom's most energetic and productive performance of the past few weeks will last beyond this one game, but at least it gave his coaches and teammates and the fans who booed him just a little faith that there is a pulse. And where there's a pulse, there is hope.

Odom's assertive, nine-point, four-rebound, three-assist, one-block, one-steal night was pivotal in the Dallas Mavericks' 90-81 victory, their second over the backcourt-depleted Houston Rockets in four nights.

"He played his game. That's how he plays," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "It was big because we needed a lift and he was one of several guys that gave it to us. He was terrific all night long."

That was the good news, as Dallas got a must-have win with a back-to-back coming up starting Thursday with the first trip to Miami since the Mavs celebrated the title in South Beach on June 12, then it's on to Orlando and Dwight Howard on Friday night.

The bad news was the Mavs might not be competitive on the road if they come out as sluggishly as they did in both these Rockets games, which as Carlisle has said officially kicked off the playoffs because of the crowded standings and the desperate need for wins now with just 15 games remaining.

Carlisle said his club looked like a lottery team in the first half as it fell behind 26-10 to a Houston team playing without its starting backcourt of Kyle Lowry and Kevin Martin and having gone to overtime the night before in rallying to knock off the Kings.

Asked if his team, now 2-2 since the encouraging four-game win streak, is nearing any level of consistency, Carlisle said, "I don't know … so we've got work to do, and I don't mind that."

The same can be said for Odom in these final 15 games. In Tuesday's game, in which he made 3 of 4 baskets, Odom might have put on display a combination of his best burst and most determined effort. He aggressively attacked his man and got to the basket on two impressive drives and drained a jumper after a little shake 'n' bake to get his man off balance.

“I've always felt optimistic about the future. The future's good, bro, I'm here. It beats the alternative, bro. ”
-- Mavericks forward Lamar Odom.

His best move came in the third quarter when he drove baseline, cradled the ball in the crook of his arm and finished with a finger roll that trickled over the rim and in to give Dallas a 64-55 lead about three minutes after he checked in with just a two-point margin over the Rockets.

"It was great to see him just being aggressive; I don't know about the headband, though," Nowitzki said. "But it was definitely fun to see him in attack mode. We all want to make this work. I think we all know, the fans know, we know if he's aggressive getting to the basket, playing with energy, getting rebounds, blocking shots, I think this team can go to another level. I think everybody sees it, and so we're behind him and hopefully there's going to be more of that."

Who can be sure?

This game came on the heels of an almost unfathomable week, if there can be such a thing in this ongoing drama. Odom flamed out against the Lakers last Wednesday and was lustily booed. Carlisle then handed Odom the first DNP-CD of his career Friday, which Odom followed with 13 scoreless minutes Saturday.

After Monday's practice, Odom felt compelled to address the boo birds, sparking a fresh round of sports talk radio debate wondering if he was simply done.

"Sometimes as a sportsman, sometimes you see things click, sometimes stuff clicks," Odom said. "I mean, I can still play now. It's just a matter of fact of finding it, finding how to assert yourself on a new team, a new system and so on and so on."

Odom has a golden opportunity ahead to keep things clicking at Miami and Orlando. But the Mavs have been here before. When Odom returned from his mostly unexplained leave of absence, his first game back on March 3 against Utah was highly encouraging with a near-identical stat line to Tuesday's game -- nine points, five rebounds and three assists.

Two nights later at Oklahoma City, he scored six points in his first three minutes. Then everything again started to slide, culminating with yet another strange week of events.

"Look, all things considered, his attitude has been terrific," Carlisle said. "And none of us will ever know a lot of the things that have happened to him in the last several months, but right now it's clear he's looking forward and he sees the opportunity to help this club, and I don't know if we would have won the game without him tonight."

Maybe it's the headband. Former Lakers teammate and friend Laron Profit sent Odom pictures of his rookie season with the Clippers when he used to don the headband, so Odom figured it couldn't hurt.

It was only one game, yet when Odom has one like this, even when he's the low-score and the low-minute man off the bench, it is worth taking note.

Will it continue? Not even Odom was willing to make a prediction.

"You can't read the future now, you know what I mean?" Odom said. "You're going to put the pressure on me not to have a bad game. You can't do that. You have to take it game by game. … I've always felt optimistic about the future. The future's good, bro, I'm here. It beats the alternative, bro."

Jason Terry sparks key run, helps Mavs edge Rockets.
Associated Press.
DALLAS--"Jason Terry scored seven consecutive points in a minute, starting a game-turning run for the Dallas Mavericks. And he wasn't alone contributing off the bench.

Like Terry, Rodrigue Beaubois and Brandan Wright scored in double figures in a 90-81 victory over the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night. Even Lamar Odom resembled the player the defending NBA champions always thought they were getting.

"We got off to a very poor start," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Odom, Terry, Wright, all of those guys that came in, Beaubouis had a very impact game. All of those guys did, and they were the difference."

The Mavericks fell behind by as many as 16 in the first quarter, and didn't overtake a short-handed and worn-out Rockets team until Terry's seven consecutive points started a 21-6 run in the third quarter.

"We needed a spark. We needed some energy. I saw us lagging there. It was an opportunity for us to take control of the game," Terry said. "The bench was tremendous. It will be a key for us down the stretch. We need to be consistent off the bench, especially offensively."

With 15 games left in the condensed regular season, the Mavericks (29-22) are tied for fifth place in the Western Conference. Next is a trip Thursday night to Miami in a rematch of last season's NBA Finals, and their first matchup since the Heat won 105-94 at Dallas in the Christmas Day season opener.

Dallas has won consecutive games against the Rockets, also winning 101-99 in overtime Saturday night in Houston.

But the Rockets (27-24) also had to play at home again Monday and needed overtime to beat Sacramento. This loss dropped them a half game behind Denver for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

"We got a little bit tired," coach Kevin McHale said. "We didn't have that zip we needed. ... The game was up for grabs in the third quarter, but we didn't have any rhythm offensively."

A turnover by Houston led to a breakaway layup by Terry with 6:39 left in the third quarter. The Mavs still trailed after Terry got credit for a layup after a goaltending call, but Terry then swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 55-53 lead with 5:39 left in the quarter. It was their first lead since the game's opening minutes.

Terry finished with 12 points and four assists. Beaubouis had 14 points with five assists and Wright 13 points.

Odom's nine points were his most in the past nine games, not including the game when Odom didn't even play last Friday.

He was 4 of 5 shooting, including a driving wraparound layup during that third-quarter run that drew a huge cheer from the crowd, which had initially greeted him with a mix of cheers and boos. He also had four rebounds, three assists, a steal, a block and no turnovers in his 23 minutes.

"I felt comfortable. I'm finally getting to the point where I'm getting my second wind," Odom said. "I can finally count on my body, which in this game is what it's all about. All you can do is take it game by game and not get too excited."

Carlisle called it a "great step in the right direction" for last season's NBA Sixth Man of the Year with the los angeles lakers.

Dirk Nowitzki had 21 points despite a bad shooting night (5 of 17), and was the only Dallas starter who scored in double figures. He made 11 of 12 free throws, 10 of the attempts coming before halftime.

Luis Scola had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Rockets, while Goran Dragic scored 17 points. Chandler Parsons had 15 points and nine rebounds.

After Terry's seven-point run, Jason Kidd had a mistake. His turnover led to a running layup by Dragic to tie it at 55, but he quickly redeemed himself with a 3-pointer that put the Mavs ahead to stay.

Even after two overtime games the previous three nights, and again without guards Kyle Lowry and Kevin Martin, the Rockets jumped out to a quick 15-4 lead. That was capped by Dragic and Courtney Lee hitting consecutive 3s.

The Rockets had their largest lead, 26-10, after a 3-pointer by Chase Budinger with 3 minutes left in the first quarter.

"We had good energy in the first quarter," Scola said. "But we didn't play well in the second half."

Game notes
After scoring 30 points in the first quarter, the Rockets had only 32 in the entire second half. ... Nowitzki scored 11 points in a first half-ending 16-10 run for Dallas. ... Lowry has missed 11 games in a row because of a bacterial infection and Martin has been out nine in a row with a sprained right shoulder. ... Mavericks G Delonte West missed his 21st straight game because of a broken right ring finger and C Brendan Haywood was out his sixth consecutive game with a sprained right knee. "They're getting close but they're not ready to play," Carlisle said."

Rockets Vs. Mavericks: Dallas Sends Houston Away With Another Road Loss.
By Jason Walker.

"The Mavericks got down early but held together long enough to give their guys enough time to erase an early 16-point Rockets lead and eventually wear down Houston to win 91-80 Tuesday night.

Mar 28, 2012 - After the Houston Rockets got off to a fast start, the Dallas Mavericks made some energy substitutions to stop the Rockets' roll and stymied them throughout the second and third quarter to give Dallas enough time to grab the lead and win 90-81 Tuesday night.

Rodrigue Beaubois came into the game as Houston was stretching their early lead to 16 and provided a spark for Dallas, getting inside and scoring nine points and cutting that lead down to four in about eight minutes.

Dirk Nowitzki provided a boost in the second quarter as well, scoring 11 of his team-high 21 points in the second quarter, depending largely on 7-8 shooting from the free throw line, ultimately seeing the Rockets lead down to three going into halftime.

In the third, it was Jason Terry's turn to provide the boost, scoring seven points in a 16-2 run late in the quarter to finally grab the lead from Houston. Also, Brandon Wright made all five of his second-half shots (11 points in all for the half) to provide support for Terry in swinging the momentum over to the Mavs.

Houston entered the game with the fourth largest discrepancy between home and away record, winning 19-7 at home and 8-17 on the road. The road was once again unkind as their second and third quarters were an uncomfortable 14-41 (34 percent) for 31 points between the two quarters.

The big lead early on for Houston was led by Luis Scola, who scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the quarter. Houston was without both backcourt starters, Kyle Lowry and Kevin Martin and just learned that Lowry could miss the rest of the season.

In a statistical anomaly, the two teams combined for only seven offensive rebounds, despite both teams shooting under 50 percent, including a 41-percent effort from Houston, who is 13th in offensive rebounding percentage.

At Mavs Moneyball, andytobo raves about the sneaky value that Brandon Wright provides:

That being said, if Haywood's injury has been good for anything it's the emergence of Brandan Wright who continues to amaze. He didn't have 7 blocks this game --- matter of fact he didn't have any -- but he was 6-7 for 13, he grabbed 7 boards, and he only committed 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He is far from a terrific rebounder or defender. But the Mavs did outrebound the Rockets tonight, and he was a big reason why. If Hay comes back and keeps performing well, the Mavs might have two fine centers after all."

Delonte West 'Overwhelmed' After Giving Birth To Cheetah.
by Tom Ziller •

"Hey, he said it. From Jeff Caplan's recap of a day at the Dallas Zoo for completely mundane teammates Delonte West and Lamar Odom:

"Well, I think they noticed as soon as I came into the zoo my natural animal instinct, you know what I mean?" Delonte said, speaking of the actual animals. "I got a chance to eat with the lions, you know? They had Lamar playing with the penguins, but they needed me for the more animalistic-type of things, carnivore-type of things. So, I also had a chance to give birth to a baby cheetah today and I'm just overwhelmed with the experience to be amongst my own and my peers."

Mavericks finally overcome Rockets for 90-81 win.
By STEPHEN HAWKINS.
DALLAS(AP)"Jason Terry scored seven consecutive points in a minute, starting a game-turning run for the Dallas Mavericks.
"Odom, Terry, Wright, all of those guys that came in, Beaubois had a very impact game. All of those guys did, and they were the difference."
The Mavericks fell behind by as many as 16 in the first quarter, and didn't overtake a short-handed and worn-out Rockets team until Terry's seven straight points started a 21-6 run in the third quarter.
This loss dropped them a half-game behind Denver for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.
Beaubois had 14 points with five assists and Wright 13 points.
Odom's nine points were his most in the last nine games, not including the game when Odom didn't even play last Friday.
Carlisle called it a `"great step in the right direction" for last season's NBA Sixth Man of the Year with the los angeles lakers.
Notes: After scoring 30 points in the first quarter, the Rockets had only 32 in the entire second half.

Notebook: Mavericks 90, Rockets 81.
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS:
Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points and the Dallas Mavericks got a big boost from the bench Tuesday in a 90-81 victory over the Houston Rockets at the American Airlines Center. The reserves combined for 48 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists, with Rodrigue Beaubois (14), Brandan Wright (13) and Jason Terry (12) scoring in double figures and even the embattled Lamar Odom enjoying his most productive game in weeks.

The Rockets (27-24) blew a big first-half lead and dropped two games behind the Mavericks (29-22) in the Western Conference playoff picture. Houston has lost six straight in the series, including an overtime loss in Houston on Saturday. Luis Scola led four Rockets starters in double figures with 22 points and eight rebounds.

QUOTABLE:
"Us bench guys came in and picked the team back up. That's what it is about, a whole team effort, and we came in and picked the guys up and kept going from there." -- Wright on the Mavericks' 48-17 advantage in bench scoring.

THE STAT:
This was just the third time the Mavs have rallied to win when trailing by 10 or more points, improving to 3-18 in those games. Houston was ahead 26-10 late in the first quarter. Dallas' two other double-digit comebacks came against Philadelphia (Feb. 17) and vs. Charlotte (March 15).

TURNING POINT:
Terry scored seven points in the span of 60 seconds, from the 6:39 mark to 5:39 in the third quarter, to ignite a 16-2 run that put the Mavericks on cruise control. The "JET"-fueled outburst by Terry included a fastbreak drive, a layup (with a goaltending call on Samuel Dalembert) and a pull-up trey from 25 feet.

QUOTABLE II:
"We weren't running and didn't have the zip that we needed, especially in that third quarter. I thought that first five minutes of that third quarter, if we could've gotten some juice and really gotten some run outs and gotten some baskets and gotten some momentum, it would've been a different game." -- Rockets head coach Kevin McHale

HOT:
Scola scored 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting in the first half. ...
Nowitzki was 11-for-12 at the free-throw line (but just 5-for-17 from the field).

NOT:
The Rockets had their lowest-scoring third quarter of the season with 12 points on 26.3 percent shooting (5-for-19). Their previous low for the period was 16, on two occasions. Playing the second night of a back-to-back after Monday's overtime win against Sacramento, Houston looked sluggish coming out of the intermission.

GOOD MOVE:
Wearing a white headband for the first time this season, Odom weathered some early boos and brought the crowd over to his side with an aggressive and energetic effort. He finished with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting with four rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in 23 minutes. It was his highest-scoring game since March 8, when he had 15 at Phoenix.

QUOTABLE III:
"He played his game. It was big because we needed a lift and he was one of several guys that gave it to us. He was terrific all night long. This is a great step in the right direction. This is how he plays. I've said all along we believe in the guy."-- Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle on Odom

BAD MOVE:
Houston's foul trouble helped Dallas close the gap in the second quarter. The Mavericks were in the bonus with 6:43 remaining in the period and took advantage, going 9-for-10 to trim the Rockets' lead to 49-46 at the break.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT:
Despite being a game-time decision with a sprained ankle, Goran Dragic played 38 minutes for Houston and contributed 17 points, seven assists and four steals. ... It's all or nothing lately for Patrick Patterson. He went 0-for-7 in Friday's loss to Dallas, scored a career-high 24 points Monday against the Kings, then went 1-for-7 on Tuesday.

ROOKIE WATCH:
Chandler Parsons scored 15 points and added a team-high nine rebounds and three steals for the Rockets.

NOTABLE:
The Mavericks said that center Brendan Haywood (sprained right knee) and guard Delonte West (fractured right ring finger) were getting closer to returning. Haywood has missed six games and West has been out for five weeks.
... Houston had won the rebounding battle in a season-high five straight games, but Dallas finished with a 43-39 edge on the glass thanks to an 11-board effort from Shawn Marion.
... Jason Kidd played in his 1,307th game, tying Buck Williams for 10th place on the NBA's all-time list.
... Dallas finished 6-1 at home for the month of March.

UP NEXT:
For the Mavericks, Thursday @ Miami, Friday @ Orlando.
For the Rockets, Friday vs. Memphis.
