Notebook: Mavericks 100, Magic 98.
Posted By Dick Scanlon, for NBA.com.
"THE FACTS:
Dirk Nowitzki's 28 points included a 15-foot game-winning shot with 5.9 seconds left in the Dallas Mavericks' 100-98 victory over the Orlando Magic.
Jason Terry and Delonte West came off the Dallas bench to combine for 32 points (17 in the fourth quarter), plus nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
Jameer Nelson led Orlando with 24 points. Ryan Anderson added 21 points, but missed a layup at the final horn.
The Magic led by as many as 15 points late in the third quarter.
QUOTABLE:
"We had a chance to tie it and I blew it. Ultimately, we need to play the whole game. We've been talking about that the whole season practically, just playing a whole 48 minutes. They made a great run and we didn't have answers during that time."-- Anderson
THE STAT:
After 34 minutes the Magic had committed eight turnovers and had a 14-point lead. In the final 14 minutes they had eight more turnovers and the lead evaporated.
TURNING POINT:
Hedo Turkoglu drove for a dunk that would have put the Magic up by three with 1:12 left, but Ian Mahinmi blocked it and West got the rebound.
QUOTABLE II:
"You block and go down and score, that was huge. There was not one play in the last six minutes that was not a huge play. That's the kind of game it was."-- Dallas coach Rick Carlisle
HOT:
After a broken finger limited him to a total of eight minutes in the preceding 22 games, West scored 15 points in 24 minutes for the Mavericks. "His energy, his toughness has been something we've missed. He came to play tonight and we needed him," said Terry.
NOT:
J.J. Redick missed all six of his shots, including five 3-pointers, and committed three turnovers.
GOOD MOVE:
The Mavericks put Dwight Howard at the free throw line 16 times. He provided nine misses, which stood out big in a two-point loss.
NOTABLE:
After missing six games with a knee injury, Dallas center Brendan Haywood started and played almost 26 minutes . .
The Mavericks have won six straight times in Orlando and the Magic have won their last two in Dallas.
UP NEXT: For the Mavericks, Monday vs. l.a. Clippers."

Clippers-<span style="color: #004000">Mavericks </span>Preview.<br />
By ALAN FERGUSON.<br />
<br />
"A lengthy stay at home appeared to provide just what the los angeles Clippers needed to end their struggles on the court and put aside any distractions off it.<br />
<br />
The Clippers, though, will be on the road for much of the rest of the season starting Monday night against the <span style="color: #004000">Dallas Mavericks</span>, <span style="color: #ff0000">winners of 10 in a row at home in the series</span>.<br />
<br />
los angeles entered its five-game homestand after getting swept during a three-games-in-three-days road stretch and having lost 12 of 19 overall following a 19-9 start. That miserable trip led to questions about coach Vinny Del Negro's job security, but he received a vote of confidence from owner Donald Sterling during the stay at the Staples Center.<br />
<br />
The franchise's first five-game win streak since November 2006 certainly helped, as los angeles (<span style="color: #ff0000">31-21</span>) finished its perfect homestand by beating Utah 105-96 on Saturday.<br />
<br />
"It ain't a huge milestone," said guard Chris Paul, who had a team-high 26 points. "You've got to strive for more than that. Every win now is crucial. We got to expect to win. The mindset is changing, and that's a good thing."<br />
<br />
Blake Griffin had 24 points, his sixth straight game with at least 20. He'll try to continue that streak while helping his team end its struggles against the Mavericks (30-23).<br />
<br />
The Clippers - who play nine of their final 14 away from Staples Center - are on the verge of their second four-game road losing streak, and the prospects of avoiding that don't appear promising. Los Angeles has dropped 17 of 19 to <span style="color: #004000">Dallas </span>and hasn't won at the American Airlines Center since April 19, 2006, when the 23-year-old Griffin was a junior in high school.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span> enters this matchup having split its last six games but with six wins in its last seven at home. The <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> bounced back from a <span style="color: #ff0000">106-85 drubbing</span> in Miami on Thursday by rallying for a <span style="color: #ff0000">100-98 victory</span> at Orlando on Friday.<br />
<br />
They trailed by 15 in the third quarter but completed their comeback when Dirk Nowitzki hit a 15-foot jumper with 5.9 seconds left. Nowitzki had 28 points to lead five players in double figures while giving his team only its second win when trailing to start the final period.<br />
<br />
"We showed a lot of fortitude, a lot of grit and lot of togetherness," <span style="color: #004000">coach Rick Carlisle </span>said. "We have lofty goals, but we've got 13 games to go and we've got a lot of improvement left."<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span> will continue that work while attempting to close its gap on Los Angeles in the standings. The fifth-place <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> are <span style="color: #ff0000">1 1/2 games behind the fourth-place Clippers</span>, who are seeking to catching the rival lakers in the Pacific Division.<br />
<br />
They can help themselves in that quest with their first six-game win streak since March 18-31, 1992, a run that began with a <span style="color: #ff0000">117-86 victory</span> in <span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span>.<br />
<br />
los angeles earned its most recent victory in the series Jan. 18 when the now-injured Chauncey Billups hit a last-second 3-pointer to secure a <span style="color: #ff0000">91-89 win</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Nowitzki</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">scored 11 of his team-best 22 points</span> over the final six-plus minutes to lead his team to a <span style="color: #ff0000">96-92 victory</span> in <span style="color: #004000">Dallas </span>on Feb. 13. Clippers Vs. Mavericks: L.A. Demolishes Dallas In Key Conference Battle.
By Steve Perrin.
"The Clippers dominated Dallas from wire-to-wire as they moved two and a half games ahead of the Mavericks, in fourth place in the Western Conference standings.
Heading into their showdown in Dallas Monday night, the Los Angeles Clippers led the Dallas Mavericks by just a game and a half in the Western Conference standings, with the Clippers in the all-important fourth spot that assures a team home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The winner of Monday night's game would be in the driver's seat going forward, not least because they would own the season series, which constitutes the first head-to-head tie-breaker in the standings.
With so much on the line, it was an open question how the Clippers might respond. The Mavericks are the defending NBA champions, a team chock full of veterans -- they've played dozens and dozens of big games over the years. But for Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Randy Foye and several other Clippers, this was literally the first meaningful game in the month of April they had ever played.
Turns out, they did just fine. Foye scored a season-high 28 points on the strength of eight three-pointers, which tied a Clippers' franchise record set in 2004 by Quentin Richardson, and the Clippers dominated the game from wire-to-wire, winning 94-75. Dallas led the game exactly once -- at 2-0. They tied the game for the last time at 11, at which point the Clippers went on a 14-4 run and never looked back. The Mavericks never even got the lead down to single digits for the final 30 minutes of game time.
For whatever reason, the Mavericks were completely discombobulated in this game. It wasn't fatigue -- Dallas was actually coming off two rest days, a rare luxury at this point of this season. It should not have been a lack of urgency -- a win in this game would have put them just a half-game out of fourth place, but instead they drop all the way to sixth. Nonetheless, the Mavericks were aimless Monday night. Perhaps it was the absence of Jason Kidd, out with a strained groin. Perhaps it was a motivated and active Clippers defense. Whatever the reason, the Mavericks shot just 39 percent and were just plain off all night.
The fourth quarter play in which Foye hit his eighth three-pointer epitomized Dallas' night. Sitting back in a zone, the Mavericks were hyper aware of where Foye was -- or at least they should have been, given that he'd already lit them up for seven treys. Foye had the ball beyond the arc at the left angle when Dirk Nowitzki decided he had strayed too far from the basket to defend Foye and decided to hand him off to Delonte West at the top of the zone. Unfortunately West's head was turned and he didn't see Nowitzki's hand off -- the net effect being that the Mavericks defense just walked away from the hottest shooter in America Monday night. A pleasantly bewildered Foye drained his record-tying three ball to stretch the L.A. lead to 18, a frustrated Rick Carlisle called timeout, and the game was over.
In addition to Foye's 28, Blake Griffin had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Clippers, and former Mav Caron Butler chipped in with 13. Chris Paul had an off shooting night, hitting just 3-12, but handed out 10 assists against just one turnover. The Mavericks were led by Nowitzki with 19; Jason Terry had 15 off the bench. No other Dallas player scored in double figures.
The Clippers will next face the lakers Wednesday night, in an even bigger game. The lakers are currently a single game ahead of the Clippers for third place in the Conference, first place in the Pacific Division. The Mavericks now find themselves behind Memphis in the standings, but they'll have a chance to catch them as the Mavs play two of their next three against the Grizzlies."

LA Clippers @ Dallas Mavericks Post Game 54 Quotes "When you stink..."
by DOH.
"What the Dallas Mavericks and the LA Clippers said after Game Fiftyfour of the Perfectly wasted Season.
Quotes
Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle
(On the Mavs) "We were poor in virtually every area of the game. I’m going to look at the film before I gauge the effort. Sometimes you just get your **** kicked that bad. We were poor and there are no excuses, guys being out, any of that kind of stuff. All of that stuff rings hollow."
(On the Game) "I'm not big on judging it on one game after you've gone through a stretch where you've been winning and been doing some good things, but we got beat every quarter. We got beat in virtually every statistical category. I don’t think you can play much worse. We can’t just dismiss it like it’s just a bad game. We’ve got to correct the things that are wrong and bounce back."
(On the Mavs' Game) "We struggled. The first half we had a lot of good shots that didn’t go in. Some of the problem was them, they’ve got big guys that cover the rim well. When you stink, you stink and we’ve got to bounce back."
(On Randy Foye making 8 Threes) "I was waiting for somebody to knock Foye down, do something. We just didn't do it, and really that's on me. If we're not aware and if we're not going to be physical with a guy that gets it going like that then it's on the head coach."
(On which Frenchy to blame what to do) "We’ve just got to be better. We’ve got to work on it tomorrow and we’ve got to bounce back and be better. The thing is, we’ve got probably the most physical team in the league coming in here on Wednesday; that’s rebounding and that’s physical play. And we weren’t good in that area tonight, so that’s gotta change."
Dirk Nowitzki
(On the Mavs D/Clips O) "I just thought everything was too easy for them in the first half, getting whatever they wanted. Our man-to-man defense wasn’t there tonight and we were a step slow."
(On Randy) "Foye was open all night. Since we really couldn’t guard them in man-to-man, we tried to go a lot of zone there in the second half and Foye was open all game."
(On the Zone) "Eventually if you play zone for 24 minutes straight, the other team is going to find some openings. That’s what the zone is going to give up, some shots here or there. Give them credit. They found them."
(On the Mavs) "I don’t think we were very good. I mean, that was obvious. We weren't shooting the ball well and shot in the low thirties all night. We couldn’t really score and at the other end we couldn’t get any stops either. That’s a bad combination."
(On what the Mavs need to do sans Kidd) "Just got to get over it, have West step in, have Roddy give us something and just get over it somehow. But obviously Kidd is the head of the snake and he's going to be missed, his leadership out there, his decision-making obviously, giving the ball to the right guys at the right time, and that's definitely going to be missed."
(On the Standings) "Yeah, I saw Memphis won tonight, Houston won. It's a tough stretch, so we've got our hands full. It's tough without Kidd, but we've got to make it happen somehow."
Jason Terry
(On leaving Foye open) "I don’t know what the breakdown in the coverage was, but it wasn’t to leave Foye open. He’s been hot of late and obviously he continued that tonight."
(On the idea to knock down give Foye FTs) "I don’t know what that was going to do. You do that and he’s going to get two free throws. If that’s me and you do that to me, I’m just going to shoot some more. So I don’t know if that works."
(On how to beat the surging Grizzlies) "I have no idea, but we'll have to figure it out. If I have to take more responsibility, try to shoot more, shoot 30 times, that's what I'm going to have to do."
Shawn Marion
(On the showing) "Tonight was a rough one out there. It was just like we couldn't get anything going on either end of the floor. It was like bringing a knife to a gun fight and you're going to lose when that happens unless you're Zorro, so it was tough. But it can't stick with us right now, because we've got to play Memphis next, so it can't stick with us. We've got to get some work in tomorrow and get ready for Wednesday."
(On not defending Foye) "I think when a guy goes out there and gets three or four consecutive shots in the same spot, something’s wrong. When you don’t pick up on that after the first, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt after the second one. But when you get to the third and the fourth and he’s getting the same shot, damn, something’s **** wrong. Either we’re going to get it right or we’re not."
Delonte West
(On the Game) "We just couldn't get the ball to fall for us and Foye was hitting dagger after dagger. All those 3's, it takes a lot out of you. They did a good job of picking us apart."
(On Mavs' Guardplay) "You don't plan to play like that. You get stops and you come down and play a very good segment of defense and then come down and have miss after miss, it will take a lot of momentum out of you. That was the story right there. We couldn't get in the flow offensively."
LA Clippers
Coach Vinny Del Negro
(On Foye) "We got him in some rhythm. They went zone, they lost him a few times on that left wing. They load up so much on Chris Paul and Blake Griffin."
Blake Griffin
(On Randy) "I know Foye had it on his mind the last time we came and played here, a lot of us did. For him to come out and perform that way is special."
(On what it means) "It's a good game because we need wins and it helps us in the West standings. At the same time, just because we won like this doesn't mean that if we had to come back it would be a rout. They're a tough team, they're a veteran team, they're missing some guys, so we've just got to keep on working and keep on plugging."
Chris Paul
(On Foye tying Quentin Richardson's franchise-record for threes in a game) "There's no point in tying the record. You might as well break it. No, Randy has been shooting the ball great lately. And I think the other thing is we've got a lot of confidence in him."
Randy Foye
(On his 8 threes) "I was just being aggressive. That was my main thing was to just come out and be aggressive. They were cracking down on Blake when he was driving and it opened up lanes, and I was just feeling it."
(On his shooting) "Whatever the defense gave me I took. I was just knocking down shots."
(On the Win) "A win like this shows that we're growing. It means a lot to play this well and beat the ex-champs."

By STEPHEN HAWKINS.<br />
DALLAS (AP)"Randy Foye kept knocking down shots for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks did nothing to stop him.<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">Foye tied a team record with a career-high eight 3-pointers</span> while scoring 28 points for the Clippers, who have their first six-game winning streak in two decades after a 94-75 victory over the Mavericks on Monday night.<br />
"I was waiting for somebody to knock (Foye) down, do something. We just didn't do it, and really that's on me," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "If we're not aware and if we're not going to be physical with a guy that gets it's going like that then it's on the head coach."<br />
After Brandan Wright's tip-in capped an 8-0 run to get Dallas within 76-62 with about 7 1/2 minutes left, Foye responded with a 3-pointer. Jason Terry then made another basket for Dallas, only to have Foy make another 3, his eighth to match the franchise record.<br />
"I was just trying to be aggressive," said Foye, who made 8 of 15 from 3-point range and 10 of 19 shots overall.<br />
"We got him in some rhythm," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "They went zone, they lost him a few times on that left wing. They load up so much on Chris (Paul) and Blake (Griffin)."<br />
Quentin Richardson made 8 of 11 from long range while scoring 36 points for the Clippers at Boston on Feb. 4, 2004.<br />
Griffin had his streak of six consecutive 20-point games snapped, but he still put up his 33rd double-double this season with 15 points and 16 rebounds.<br />
Caron Butler, part of the Mavericks' championship team last season, had 13 points for the Clippers, who had lost 10 consecutive games in Dallas since 2006. Nick Young had 10 points, while Paul had eight points and 10 assists.<br />
Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks with 19 points, while Terry had 15.<br />
Los Angeles entered the game fourth in the Western Conference, just ahead of the defending NBA champions.<br />
Had the playoffs been starting, it would have been a first-round game - in Los Angeles. Good thing for the Mavericks there are still more than three weeks left in the regular season.<br />
For the Clippers, they took two of three in the season series against Dallas.<br />
"A win like this shows that we're growing," Foye said. "It means a lot to play this well and beat the champs."<br />
The loss dropped the Mavs to sixth place in the West. They are now a half-game behind Memphis, who they play twice in their next three games, including Wednesday night at home.<br />
Dallas was without veteran guard Jason Kidd (strained right groin) and forward Lamar Odom (stomach illness). Kidd isn't expected to play this week, meaning he could miss his third four-game stretch this season.<br />
As usual, Griffin had some highlight-reel dunks. He punctuated his night with a high-flying gem in the closing minutes. On one of Foye's missed 3s, Griffin came charging into the lane and cut in front of Nowitzki for a one-handed putback slam.<br />
Griffin's first dunk came 5 minutes into the game, when Butler had a steal and pass to Griffin for a breakaway jam. Griffin made the shot even as Delonte West, filling in as the starter for Kidd, reached over and slapped down on his head.<br />
The Clippers were already up 25-15 in the first quarter after a 3-pointer by Foye.<br />
"We just couldn't get the ball to fall for us and Foye was hitting dagger after dagger," West said. "All those 3's, it takes a lot out of you."'<br />
Young's only points before a late 3-pointer had been seven in a row in a 75-second span midway through the second quarter for a 35-23 Clippers lead.<br />
Dallas had only 33 points at halftime, its second-lowest scoring first half of the season, and things didn't get any better after that.<br />
Vince Carter drove for what he thought was a layup early in the second half, but was called for charging. While Carter ran down the court in disbelief, replays showed that Griffin appeared to have his feet set when he took the contact.<br />
Butler then hit a 3-pointer over Carter, and Foye drove for a short high bank shot to push the lead to 52-35.<br />
"It's a good game because we need wins and it helps us in the West standings," Griffin said. "At the same time, just because we won like this doesn't mean that if we had to come back it would be a rout. They're a tough team, they're a veteran team, they're missing some guys, so we've just got to keep on working and keep on plugging."<br />
Notes: The Clippers left the floor at halftime with a 49-33 lead, but officials reviewed an earlier basket by Kenyon Martin that they determined came after the shot clock ran out. So the halftime score was really 47-33.<br />
... Los Angeles' six-game winning streak 20 years ago began with a win at Dallas.<br />
... The Mavericks scored 29 points in the first half at San Antonio on Jan. 5, their eighth game this season."<br />

Clippers 94, <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">75</span>.<br />
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.<br />
<br />
"<span style="color: #ff0000">THE FACTS</span>:<br />
The los angeles clippers ran their longest winning streak in 20 years to six in a row with a rare 94-75 road victory Monday against the Dallas Mavericks. Randy Foye tied a franchise record with eight 3-pointers and scored 28 points to help the Clippers snap a 10-game losing streak at the American Airlines Center.<br />
<br />
The Clippers' last six-game winning streak was from March 18-31, 1992, and their last road win against the Mavericks was on April 19, 2006. Blake Griffin contributed 15 points and a game-high 16 rebounds in the victory.<br />
<br />
Dirk Nowitzki had 19 points and Jason Terry added 15 for the short-handed <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> (<span style="color: #ff0000">30-24</span>). Playing without Jason Kidd (right groin strain) and Lamar Odom (stomach illness), Dallas dropped further behind the Clippers (32-21) in the Western Conference standings. los angeles took two out of three to win the season series with the defending champs.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE</span>:<br />
"He was just feeling it obviously. We got him in some rhythm. They went zone and they lost him a few times on the left wing. ... He hit a couple tough ones. They left him a couple of times, but he just got into a rhythm. When they were making runs, he hit a three probably two or three times, which kind of set them back."<br />
-- Clippers head coach Vinny Del Negro on Foye.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">THE STAT</span>:<br />
In the two decades since the Clippers' last six-game winning streak, the Mavericks put together 26 regular-season streaks of six or more victories (including a six-game streak from Feb. 8-17 this season).<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">TURNING POINT</span>:<br />
Dallas pulled within seven early in the second quarter, but L.A. received a big lift from its bench to push the lead back to double figures for good. Nick Young scored seven straight points with a layup, a 19-footer and a 3-pointer and Eric Bledsoe followed with back-to-back pull-up jumpers during the 11-2 surge, putting the Clippers up 39-23 with 5:08 left in the half.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE II</span>:<br />
"I was waiting for somebody to knock him down, do something. We just didn't do it, and really that's on me. If we're not aware and if we're not going to be physical with a guy that gets it going like that, then it's on the head coach."-- <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle</span> on Foye.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">HOT</span>:<br />
Foye was 8-for-15 behind the arc and matched a team record for 3-point field goals set by Quentin Richardson, who was 8-for-11 in a 36-point effort at Boston on Feb. 4, 2004. Foye's previous career high was six treys, set while with Minnesota on Jan. 7, 2009 against Oklahoma City.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">NOT</span>:<br />
The Mavs had just 33 points at halftime on 35 percent shooting (14-for-40), their lowest-scoring first half at home this season and second-lowest overall behind a 29-point effort at San Antonio back on Jan. 5. Dallas shot 2-for-12 from 3-point range in the first half.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">FANTASY SPOTLIGHT</span>:<br />
Griffin saw his streak of six consecutive 20-point games come to an end. He was 7-for-11 from the field and just 1-for-5 at the stripe. Chris Paul dished 10 assists, former Maverick Caron Butler scored 13 points and Young finished with 10.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">ROOKIE WATCH</span>:<br />
Trey Thompkins saw some action for the Clippers during garbage time and scored four points (2-for-2 field goals) in less than three minutes.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">NOTABLE</span>:<br />
Odom is day-to-day, but the Mavericks said that Kidd, 39, will not play the rest of the week. Dallas is 0-7 this season without Odom in the lineup. ...<br />
The Mavs' only lead of the night was 2-0. ...<br />
Terry sank his 1,759th career 3-pointer, one shy of tying former teammate Peja Stojakovic for fifth place on the NBA's all-time list. ...<br />
The Clippers outscored the Mavericks 16-2 in fastbreak points. ...<br />
Los Angeles is 17-1 when holding opponents under 90 points.<br />

Grizzlies-Mavericks Preview.
By JEFF MEZYDLO.
"The busiest stretch of their season seems to have brought out the best in the Memphis Grizzlies.
Trying to win three games in three nights, the visiting Grizzlies look to put some distance between themselves and Dallas in the Western Conference standings with a fourth straight victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday night.
Memphis (30-22) opened a stretch of five games in six days by losing 98-89 at Houston on Friday, but has since won three in a row. One night after winning 94-88 at West-leading Oklahoma City, the Grizzlies overcame a 12-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat Golden State 98-94 at home Tuesday.
O.J. Mayo scored 19 points and Mike Conley added 18 in his first game after missing the previous two with an ankle injury, and Memphis used a late 13-0 run to record its fifth victory in six games.
The Grizzlies are fifth in the West, one game ahead of sixth-place Dallas (30-24).
"We started to try to find it within ourselves when we were down eight or nine at the end, saying: 'We can't lose this game,'" Conley said. "That game we played (Monday) night is nothing if we don't win this game. Guys understood that and went out there and found a way to win."
Trying to match a season high with a third consecutive road victory, Memphis also looks to win its third straight at Dallas following a nine-game road skid in the series. Zach Randolph scored 27 points and Conley added 17 with 10 assists during a 104-103 victory over the Mavericks in the teams' most recent meeting at American Airlines Center on March 6, 2011.
Back tightness limited Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki to one point in 10 minutes while Memphis handed the visiting Mavericks a 96-85 loss Feb. 29. Marc Gasol had 22 points with 11 rebounds while Conley added 20 and 10 assists for the Grizzlies' third consecutive victory overall in the series.
If Dallas is to end that skid, it likely must show some improvement after shooting 39.0 percent during a 94-75 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. Nowitzki scored 19 points, but the Mavericks trailed by 14 at halftime en route to posting their third-lowest point total this season.
The Mavericks have dropped four of seven since a four-game winning streak.
"I don't think you can play much worse," coach Rick Carlisle told the Mavericks' official website. "We can't just dismiss it like it's just a bad game. We've got to correct the things that are wrong and bounce back. We've just got to be better."
Dallas played without injured point guard Jason Kidd (groin) and key reserve Lamar Odom (illness) on Monday. While Odom could return for this contest, the 39-year-old Kidd is likely to miss the next three games.
"(Kidd's injury is) something that has been an issue and we've got to get it resolved," Carlisle said.
Nowitzki has totaled eight points in his last two games at Memphis, but he's averaged 25.9 on 54.8 percent shooting in the last 14 home contests against the Grizzlies including playoffs.
These teams meet for the final time in the regular season Saturday night in Memphis."

Recap: Dallas vs. Memphis.
By The Sports Network.
"Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading to Dallas Mavericks to a 95-85 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in a battle of playoff contenders.
Shawn Marion scored 12 of his 16 points in a fourth quarter that saw the Mavs outscore the Grizzlies by a 29-17 margin.
Dallas rebounded from a 19-point loss to the Clippers on Monday and pulled into a virtual tie with Memphis for the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference playoff race.
"It was a good bounce back for us," Mavs guard Jason Terry said. "Obviously we're fighting with all of these teams for playoff positioning and this was a crucial game for us as are all of them."
The Grizzlies, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, were led by O.J. Mayo's 17 points. Marc Gasol recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but shot just 3-for-13 from the field.
Dallas trailed by five early in the fourth, but scored 10 straight points - six from Marion - to go in front 78-73 near the midway point.
The Grizzlies, playing their third game in as many days, appeared to slow down in crunch time, as a 9-0 run by the Mavs a little later turned a close game into a double-digit deficit.
Terry began the stretch with a three-pointer, and Marion ended it with a dunk for an 89-77 cushion with three minutes remaining.
The closest the visitors got from there was eight.
"I think we ran out of gas. I think we gave our best effort, for the most part," Grizzlies guard Mike Conley said. "In the fourth quarter, we couldn't score, shots weren't falling for us, and they got too many easy looks in transition. They got out and got some turnovers, and they were able to capitalize off of those for some easy buckets."
Memphis held a 23-20 lead after the opening quarter and led by as many as 10 in the second. Dallas, though, chipped away at the deficit and pulled within 51-47 at the break.
A back-and-forth third quarter ended with the Grizzlies holding a 68-66 edge."

Backs to the wall,Dallas Mavericks catapult past Grizzlies.
Posted By Dwain Price.
DALLAS—"With the games running out fast, the Dallas Mavericks had to make a move in the right direction to improve their playoff chances.
That move came Wednesday when the Mavs wore down the tired-legged Memphis Grizzlies, 95-85, at American Airlines Center.
“Yeah, it was a good bounce back for us,” said Jason Terry, who poured in 15 points. “Obviously we’re fighting with all these teams for playoff positioning and this was a crucial game for us, as are all of them.
“It was a good win tonight, but our focus now shifts to Portland.”
The victory put the Mavs (31-24) in a virtual tie with the Grizzlies (30-23) for fifth place in the Western Conference standings with 11 games remaining. Memphis has a winning percentage of .566, while Dallas is at .564.
The game turned early in the fourth quarter when the Mavs used a 21-4 run to turn a 73-68 deficit into an 89-77 lead with 3:01 left. Shawn Marion was the sparkplug during that decisive run as he tallied 10 of his 16 points.
The effort helped the Mavs put Monday’s ugly 94-75 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in their rearview mirror.
“We didn’t play a good game on Monday, but today was a new day,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “We needed to come out stronger, come out and play better.
“I thought our discipline and patience was good.”
It had to be. Especially after the Grizzlies built a 46-36 lead late in the second quarter.
“You get down 10 early and the way it went Monday, it would have been easy to just let it go off a cliff, but we didn’t do that,” Carlisle said. “We just stayed in there.
“The run at the end of the half was important. Then the first possession of the second half, the ball touched five different guys. We hit a three and that was big for us and gave us momentum in the second half.”
Dirk Nowitzki had five points and Delonte West added four in an 11-3 run the Mavs pieced together just before halftime. Then, when the Grizzlies tried to shake loose of the Mavs in the fourth quarter after building a five-point cushion, Marion kept hustling and kept the Mavs in the game.
“Our motto is don’t even worry about it,” Terry said. “So if something goes wrong out there on the floor, or somebody is out of the lineup, we just tell ourselves or tell our teammates don’t even worry about it and just keep playing.
“And I think that’s what has been keeping us in these games and keeping us positive. Monday night was a bad performance, but we just put it away and did not even worry about it.”
In addition to bagging the victory over a Grizzlies team that was playing its seventh game in nine days, and its third in three days, the Mavs finally were able to beat someone on the boards. After getting hammered on the boards for the past two weeks, the Mavs won the rebounding battle, 45-40, with five players coming up with at least five rebounds.
“The attention to detail was much better on the boards,” Carlisle said. “It was a collective effort. Everyone chipped in.
“That’s the kind of team we are. We don’t have one guy that’s going to go and get 15 rebounds a night. It’s just not how we’re set up.”
Nowitzki led the Mavs with a game-high 23 points and 10 boards, West scored 14, and Ian Mahinmi came off the bench to collect 10 rebounds as the Mavs stopped a three-game losing streak to the Grizzlies.
For the second straight game, the Mavs played without 39-year old Jason Kidd, who is out with a strained right groin. But West filled in admirably as he had only one turnover in 26 minutes.
Lamar Odom also returned after missing Monday’s game with a stomach illness. Odom contributed five points and five rebounds in 19 minutes, but drew jeers when he missed the entire rim during one free throw attempt in the third quarter.
“We’re still trying to get guys comfortable in their roles,” said Terry, who had five points and three assists in the fourth period. “Obviously, Delonte West has missed a lot of time. We’re trying to implement him back into the system and get him in sync and get everyone on the same page.
That’s one reason why we’re having so many inconsistencies.”
The win over the Grizzlies was critical if the Mavs have any hopes of catching the Clippers (32-22) for fourth place and the all-important homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
“You can win two or lose two either way and that can make a big difference where you’re going to be in the playoffs, or not in the playoffs at all,” Terry said. “Knowing that and knowing we’re a championship caliber team, we just have to continue to grind it out and don’t even worry about it.”
The Grizzlies got 17 points from O.J. Mayo, 11 from Mike Conley Jr. and 10 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals from Marc Gasol.
But they had nothing left in the tank when they needed to play a play in the critical stages of the fourth quarter.
“I think we ran out of gas,” Conley said. “I think we gave our best effort, for the most part.
“In the fourth quarter we couldn’t score, shots weren’t falling, and they got too many easy looks in transition. They got out and got some turnovers and they were able to capitalize off of those for some easy buckets.”
The Mavs shot 50 percent from the field and outscored Memphis in the paint, 44-36. Now, the Mavs will end this three-game homestand Friday against Portland before hitting the road to play at Memphis on Saturday.
“Throughout this rigorous schedule our guys are going to be in and out of the lineup,” Terry said. “But once we get a consistent set rotation I think we’re going to be OK.
“I think once we get to the playoffs everyone should be healthy by then, and go forward and make another championship run.”

Nowitzki 23 for Dallas in 95-85 win over Grizzlies.
By STEPHEN HAWKINS
AP Sports Writer.
DALLAS—"Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and the Dallas Mavericks used a big fourth-quarter run to get a 95-85 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.
Shawn Marion scored 10 of his 16 points when the Mavericks went ahead with a 21-4 run over a 7-minute span in the fourth quarter to take control.
It was the first of two games in four days between the teams that are in a virtual tie for fifth place in the Western Conference standings. They play again Saturday in Memphis, a night after both play different teams.
Dallas (31-24) had dropped to sixth place behind Memphis after a 95-74 loss Monday night at home against the fourth-place Los Angeles Clippers.
The Grizzlies (30-23) had won five of six games, including road games against division leaders Oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Before playing again, Memphis is at Miami on Friday, when Dallas hosts Portland.
O.J. Mayo had 17 points to lead Memphis, which had balanced scoring as seven players scored at least eight points.
Memphis had a 73-68 lead after Quincy Pondexter's three-point play with 10 minutes left. He moved between Nowitzki and Lamar Odom to grab an offensive rebound and was fouled making the putback shot. He then added the free throw.
Jason Terry's long jumper started the game-turning run and his inbound pass to Marion for a strong layup got the Mavericks within one point.
After Gilbert Arenas came up short on a shot, he fouled Marion on the other end. Marion hit both free throws for a 74-73 lead with 8 minutes left, butting the Mavericks ahead to stay.
Arenas then had a shot blocked by Terry, and Nowitzki made two free throws before Marion's layup for a 10-0 Dallas spurt.
Mayo, who scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter, ended the Dallas run with a driving layup.
The Grizzlies were within 80-77 after two free throws by Mayo. But Nowitzki responded with a 3-pointer and Terry had a steal that led to a layup by Marion, who ended the 21-4 spurt with a breakaway slam dunk with 3 minutes left.
Terry finished with 15 points while West had 14 on 6-of-7 shooting. Ian Mahinmi had 10 rebounds.
Mike Conley had 11 points for Memphis. Marc Gasol had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Memphis led 46-36 when Conley made a 21-foot jumper with 3:24 left in the first half before Dallas cut its largest deficit with a 9-1 run.
Odom, back after missing Monday night's game with a stomach illness, made a short turnaround hook shot that finally dropped after rattling around the rim.
West then had a pair of long jumpers before blocking a shot. That led to a putback layup by Nowitzki that got Dallas within 47-45 with a minute left.
After Nowitzki pushed through Mayo while Rudy Gay tried to swat the ball away to make a basket, the Mavericks' All-Star head-butted the ball after it went through the hoop and shouted out in frustration.
Gay hit a 19-foot turnaround in the final second for a 51-47 halftime lead.
NOTES: Memphis G Tony Allen left the game with 5:20 left after taking a hard foul from Brendan Haywood. Allen remained in a heap on the floor, dripping blood and leaving with a towel over his mouth. ...
Terry's only 3-pointer was the 1,760th of his career, matching Peja Stojakovic for fifth on the NBA career list. ..
Dallas G Jason Kidd (strained right groin) missed the second game in a row, and is expected to miss at least two more games. ...
The Grizzlies played the fifth of seven games in nine days."

By STEPHEN HAWKINS.<br />
<br />
DALLAS (AP)"Shawn Marion and Jason Terry decided it was time for the Dallas Mavericks to run.<br />
And they went right past the worn-out Memphis Grizzlies in the fourth quarter for a 95-85 victory Wednesday night.<br />
"We concentrated on getting some transition offense. We were able to get out and run," Marion said. "We want to make teams pay for their mistakes."<br />
Marion scored 10 of his 16 points, with Terry setting up some of the baskets and making some of his own, and the Mavericks went ahead to stay with a 21-4 run over a 7-minute span in the fourth quarter. Memphis, playing for the third straight night, made only one of 12 shots in that stretch.<br />
"We ran out of gas," guard Mike Conley said. "In the fourth quarter, we couldn't score, shots weren't falling for us, and they got too many easy looks in transition."<br />
The Grizzlies had a 73-68 lead after Quincy Pondexter's three-point play with 10 minutes left. By time Marion had a breakaway dunk with 3 minutes left, Dallas was in control and avoiding another damaging loss.<br />
It was the first of two games in four days between the teams that are in a virtual tie for fifth place in the Western Conference standings. They play again Saturday in Memphis, a night after both play different teams.<br />
Dallas (31-24) had dropped to sixth place behind Memphis after a 95-74 loss Monday night at home against the fourth-place Los Angeles Clippers. The Mavericks lost two of three in that season series, losing the tiebreaker against the Clippers.<br />
"It was a good bounce-back for us," Terry said. "Obviously we're fighting with all these teams for playoff positioning and this was a crucial game for us, as are all of them."<br />
The Grizzlies (30-23) had won five of six games, including road games against division leaders Oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Lakers.<br />
Before playing again in the rubber game of their three-game series, Memphis is at Miami on Friday, when Dallas hosts Portland.<br />
"It's one thing to just play three games in a row, but we just played five in six (days)," coach Lionel Hollins said. "I thought we played well enough to win the game. We were in the game all the way. We kept staying ahead; staying ahead, and then right at the end we kind of just let go of the rope a little bit. And then they got the lead, and then they sustained their run."<br />
Dirk Nowitzki had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Mavericks. Terry finished with 15 points while Delonte West had 14 on 6-of-7 shooting. Ian Mahinmi grabbed 10 rebounds.<br />
O.J. Mayo had 17 points to lead Memphis, which had balanced scoring as seven players scored at least eight points. Mike Conley had 11 points.<br />
Pondexter moved between Nowitzki and Lamar Odom to grab an offensive rebound and was fouled making the putback shot. He then added the free throw, before Terry's long jumper started the game-turning run and his inbound pass to Marion for a strong layup got the Mavericks within a point.<br />
After Gilbert Arenas came up short on a shot, he fouled Marion on the other end. Marion hit both free throws for a 74-73 lead with 8 minutes left and putting the Mavs ahead to stay.<br />
"They got anything they wanted in the fourth quarter," said Marc Gasol, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis.<br />
Arenas had a shot blocked by Terry, and Nowitzki made two free throws before Marion's layup for a 10-0 Dallas spurt.<br />
Mayo, who scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter, ended that portion of the Dallas run with a driving layup.<br />
The Grizzlies were within 80-77 after two free throws by Mayo. But Nowitzki responded with a 3-pointer and Terry had a steal that led to a layup by Marion<br />
Memphis led 46-36 when Conley made a 21-foot jumper with 3:24 left in the first half before Dallas cut its largest deficit with a 9-1 run.<br />
Odom, back after missing Monday night's game with a stomach illness, made a short turnaround hook shot that finally dropped after rattling around the rim.<br />
West had a pair of long jumpers before blocking a shot that led to a putback layup by Nowitzki to get within 47-45 with a minute left.<br />
After Nowitzki pushed through Mayo while Rudy Gay tried to swat the ball away to make a basket, the Mavericks' All-Star head-butted the ball after it went through the hoop and shouted out in frustration.<br />
Gay hit a 19-foot turnaround in the final second for a 51-47 halftime lead.<br />
"We made them earn everything they got," Gasol said. "We've had a tough stretch and it isn't getting any easier."<br />
<br />

"<span style="color: #ff0000">THE FACTS</span>:<br />
Memphis controlled the game through three quarters, but fatigue caught up to the Grizzlies in the fourth quarter Wednesday and so did the Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas to a 95-85 victory with 23 points and 10 rebounds, snapping a three-game winning streak by a Memphis squad playing the final game of a back-to-back-to-back and its fifth game in six nights.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Shawn Marion</span> added 16 points, <span style="color: #004000">Jason Terry</span> tallied 15 and <span style="color: #004000">Delonte West</span> had 14 for the Mavs (<span style="color: #ff0000">31-24</span>), who had dropped their last three meetings with the Grizzlies (<span style="color: #ff0000">30-23</span>). The teams clash again Saturday in Memphis to decide the season series. O.J. Mayo paced Memphis with 17 points, courtesy of his 4-for-5 shooting from downtown.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE</span>:<br />
"We kept staying ahead, staying ahead, and then right at the end we kind of let go of the rope a little bit. They got the lead and sustained their run. They got a little more aggressive offensively and kept attacking the basket, and we just didn't have enough to hold the finger in the dike."-- Memphis head coach Lionel Hollins.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">THE STAT</span>:<br />
It was a rare rally for Dallas. This is just the third time the Mavericks have won a game this season when trailing after three quarters (3-20). Memphis led 68-66 entering the fourth. The <span style="color: #004000">defending champs</span> were 18-22 in that situation last season.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">TURNING POINT</span>:<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Dallas </span>used a <span style="color: #ff0000">21-4 run</span> from the 9:39 mark of the fourth quarter through the 3:01 mark <span style="color: #ff0000">to flip a 73-68 deficit into an 89-77 advantage</span>. The Grizzlies' only points in that stretch came on a layup by Mayo and one free throw each from Marc Gasol and Mayo. They were 1-for-12 during the cold snap.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE II</span>:<br />
"I think we ran out of gas."-- Memphis guard Mike Conley.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE III</span>:<br />
"Our motto is 'don't even worry about it,' so if something goes wrong out on the floor or somebody is out of the lineup, we just tell ourselves don't even worry about it, just keep playing. That's what has been keeping us in these games and keeping us positive."-- <span style="color: #004000">Terry</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">HOT</span>:<br />
Starting for the injured <span style="color: #004000">Jason Kidd</span> (right groin strain), <span style="color: #004000">West </span><span style="color: #ff0000">finished 6-for-7</span> and <span style="color: #ff0000">knocked down both of his 3-point attempts </span>in his highest-scoring game since Jan. 30 at Phoenix (25 points).<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">NOT</span>:<br />
The Grizzlies <span style="color: #ff0000">scored just 34 points in the second half on 30 percent shooting (12-for-40). </span>After intermission, Rudy Gay was <span style="color: #ff0000">0-for-5</span>, Gasol was <span style="color: #ff0000">1-for-6</span> and Conley was <span style="color: #ff0000">1-for-6</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">GOOD MOVE</span>:<br />
Terry picked of a sloppy pass by Gay and drove to the basket before dishing it behind his back to a trailing Marion for an easy layup and an 85-77 lead.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">BAD MOVE</span>:<br />
Shortly after missing a wide-open finger roll, things got even more embarrassing for <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks forward Lamar Odom</span> when he touched nothing but air on a free-throw misfire with 56.9 seconds left in the third quarter.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">FANTASY SPOTLIGHT:</span><br />
Gasol shot just 3-for-13, but still had a nice night for fantasy owners with 10 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots.<br />
... <span style="color: #004000">Backup center Ian Mahinmi </span><span style="color: #ff0000">matched his season high with 10 boards </span>for the <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">NOTABLE</span>:<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Terry's </span>3-pointer with 4:59 left in the game was the 1,760th of his career, matching Peja Stojakovic for fifth place in NBA history.<br />
... The Mavericks improved to 5-19 when trailing by 10 or more points this year. They were down 46-36 in the second quarter.<br />
... Memphis guard Tony Allen went to the locker room midway through the fourth quarter with an apparent bloody nose.<br />

<br />
I’m getting a sinking feeling that we’re reaching the part of this season that is going to make me sad. We’ve got 10 games left, six road and four home, and barring some miracle (or more accurately a succession of back-to-back-to-back miracles) that’s it.<br />
<br />
This is the time of year when the games get better. Teams in the hunt for Playoff spots start shorting their rotations and playing every second of every possessions. The intensity level in the stands goes up a notch. The focus heightens. That Playoffs are coming. If you’re a fan of basketball at it’s highest level, like me, then you get excited just knowing that in a couple of weeks you’ll get to see the very very best basketball in the world.<br />
<br />
What makes me sad is that the Blazers will not be taking part. Three straight Playoff appearances is a good run. It can even make for a successful era. But Portland is a franchise that once played in 23 consecutive post seasons. That puts this iteration’s Playoff streak two decades shy of tying that its forebear’s. Talk about disappointment.Playing hard and getting positive results is good. But missing the Playoffs is going to be hard to stomach.<br />
<br />
One team that isn’t going to miss the Playoffs is Portland’s opponent on Friday: NBA champs of last year, the Dallas Mavericks. Handicapping Dallas is a tough proposition. They’ve played much better basketball than what we’ve seen from them in 2011-12. But it’s as true today as it ever was, when you’ve got Dirk Nowitzki on your roster you can compete with any team in the league.<br />
<br />
The Mavs are comfortably stationed in the sixth spot in the Western Conference. Comfortable in the sense that they won’t fall out of the top eight. They are, however, tied with Memphis, two games behind the Clippers for home court in the first round, and a game and a half ahead of Houston for the seven seed.<br />
<br />
If the Playoffs began tomorrow, the Mavericks would face the Lakers in the first round. That would be a classic grudge match, but I doubt it’s one the defending champs want any part of. I can imagine Kobe Bryant et al. salivating at the chance to repay Dallas for handing the Lakers their ignominious exit from last year’s Playoffs, and I can just as clearly imagine Dirk an co. believing that getting swept out of the first round will somehow invalidate their title run.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">has two choices</span>: play a little bit better, or play a little bit worse. My guess is they try to play better. That’s no good for Portland. The Blazers have played well in Dallas, but very rarely have they played well enough to win. With the Mavericks intent on improving their Playoff position, there’s a good chance that Portland will have to be at the topper most of their top form to have a chance.<br />
<br />
The Mavericks are beatable, though, and luckily for Portland, the best way to beat them is by playing a lot of defense. I say it’s the best thing because since taking control of the team head coach Kaleb Canales has preached defense, preached to the point that he often says little else, even when asked about offense, or lineups, or the Kardashians. The Blazers will have a chance to flex that defensive identity when and if they can stop Dallas from blowing up the scoreboard.<br />
<br />
The <span style="color: #004000">Mavs</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">begin and end with</span> <span style="color: #004000">Dirk Nowitzki</span>, of course, but they still have a ton of weapons. It’s important to note that they still bring Jason Terry off the bench, and that this season he’s been joined by the other Mr. Kardashian, Lamar Odom. Against the Nets on Wednesday, Portland’s bench was pretty ineffective. The combo of Gerald Green and Anthony Morrow hung an even 40 spot of the Blazers’ second string. LO and JET can and will do better. Luke Babbitt, Jonny Flynn, Nolan Smith (maybe), and Jamal Crawford can’t hope to out-score their Dallas counterparts. For Portland’s second unit it is going to be defend or get killed.<br />
<br />
Like Boston (in a regular season when Portland plays them twice) the Blazers often get Dallas at least one good game. Usually that game happens at home. Portland went to double OT their only other stop in the Big D this season, and won’t meet the Mavs at the Rose Garden until next week. History tells us, then, that Friday’s game will not be the Blazers’ one shining moment against the Mavericks. History has been wrong before though.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">Here’s a couple of things to watch for</span>:<br />
<br />
The J.J. Hickson/LaMarcus Aldridge duo: Joel Przybilla will start Friday. He will start the rest of the season. He won’t start next year (at least not for the Blazers). That position will likely go to J.J. Hickson. Friday will most likely be like the last four or five games. Joel starts and plays around 10 minute; J.J. comes off the bench and plays around 27. Dallas used to be a dominant defensive team in the paint because they used to have Tyson Chandler. Brandon Haywood is not Tyson Chandler, and Dirk has never been a defender. With Hickson and Aldridge on the court, Portland might not have a distinct advantage defensively, but they at least are going to be able to get some stuff done on offense. If J.J. and LA can combine for 30 or more points and 20ish rebounds, I do believe Portland has a chance.<br />
<br />
Jamal Crawford versus <span style="color: #004000">Jason Terry: Jason Terry </span>is the elder statesmen of Seattle basketball; Jamal Crawford is the next in line. Terry and Crawford play arguably the same roles for their teams, and even if their shots don’t look anything alike, they have basically the same style of play. Jamal’s a bit better off the dribble. JET’s a bit more consistent. Whenever Seattle guys get together, they like to go at each other. Jamal would probably like nothing better than to have a good game against his older Emerald City comrade; Terry would probably like nothing better than to keep Jamal from going off by going off himself. Should be fun to watch.<br />
Coach K’s game plan: Portland cannot lose any more games the rest of the season, that we know. We also know that winning right now is basically irrelevant. We also know that the Canales Era has alternated wins and losses since the day it began. Kaleb Canales has a choice: try to break that cycle by playing Friday as if it were a game that mattered, or play Friday like he’s been playing all his games, as if getting guys minutes is equal in importance to the score. The former gives Portland their best shot. The latter is what I expect to see."<br />

Trail Blazers-<span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> Preview.<br />
By ALAN FERGUSON.<br />
<br />
"Even with a new coach, the Portland Trail Blazers are still having trouble gaining momentum in the playoff race. A visit to the <span style="color: #004000">Dallas Mavericks </span>might not help.<br />
<br />
The <span style="color: #ff0000">Blazers will seek back-to-back wins for the first time in more than two months</span> Friday night in <span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">Portland (26-29) </span>is 6-6 since interim coach Kaleb Canales took over for the fired Nate McMillan, and has alternated wins and losses over its last nine games.<br />
<br />
"We've got to figure it out," guard Raymond Felton said. " We've got to figure out how to go on a roll for like five games."<br />
<br />
The Blazers bounced back from a five-point loss to Utah by pulling away in the fourth quarter Wednesday for a 101-88 victory over visiting New Jersey. After falling behind by three with 6:50 remaining, Portland ended the game on a 19-3 run.<br />
<br />
LaMarcus Aldridge topped 20 points for the fourth straight game with a team-best 24, and Nicolas Batum recorded his second straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The win left the Blazers 3 1/2 games behind Houston and Denver, who are tied for the final two playoff positions in the Western Conference.<br />
<br />
Portland will continue that push during a two-game trip to <span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span> (<span style="color: #ff0000">31-24</span>) and Milwaukee. The Blazers, who haven't won consecutive games since Jan. 23-24, are 7-19 on the road and have lost 23 of 27 all-time at the American Airlines Center, including all three games during last year's playoffs.<br />
<br />
Portland fell 97-94 in double overtime during the most recent visit Feb. 11 as the Mavericks' Delonte West scored six of his 10 points to open the second extra session.<br />
<br />
Dirk Nowitzki had 20 points to lead five players in double figures and Jason Terry finished with 19. Aldridge had 33 points in his hometown.<br />
<br />
The Blazers' big man has averaged 32.0 points and 10.7 rebounds during his team's three-game losing streak in Dallas during the regular season.<br />
<br />
The Mavericks will try to extend Portland's struggles at the American Airlines Center while ending their own inconsistent stretch. Dallas has alternated losses and victories in its last four contests.<br />
<br />
The Mavericks rebounded from a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, the fourth-place team in the West, by topping Memphis 95-85 on Wednesday. The win allowed Dallas to move into a tie with the Grizzlies for fifth in the conference.<br />
<br />
Shawn Marion scored 10 of his 16 points during a key 21-4 run in the fourth quarter, while Nowitzki recorded his ninth double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.<br />
<br />
"It was a good bounce-back (victory) for us," Terry said. "Obviously we're fighting with all these teams for playoff positioning and this was a crucial game for us, as are all of them."<br />
<br />
To help themselves in the playoff race, the Mavericks will try to collect two wins over the Blazers over their final 11 games. Dallas visits Portland next Friday as part of a four-game trip.<br />
<br />
The Mavericks might have veteran guard Jason Kidd back for that game, but he's expected to miss this one with a strained right groin.<br />
<br />
Nowitzki will trying to make up for Kidd's absence by improving on a 26.3-point average over his last 19 games against the Blazers, a stretch in which he's shot 49.1 percent. He averaged 27.3 points while leading Dallas to a six-game victory in last season's playoffs.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">With his next 3-pointer</span>, <span style="color: #004000">Terry</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">will pass Peja Stojakovic for fifth on the all-time list</span>."<br />

Mavericks-Grizzlies Preview.
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN
"After convincingly knocking off one NBA finalist from a year ago, the Memphis Grizzlies have quickly set their sights on avenging a loss from earlier this week to the other one.
The Grizzlies are eager to move two games ahead of the visiting Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference standings Saturday night.
Memphis (31-23) never trailed in an impressive 97-82 win over Miami on Friday, snapping the superstar-laden Heat's 17-game home winning streak. The Grizzlies led by double digits throughout the final three quarters.
"The first time I looked up at the scoreboard we were up 15 points," coach Lionel Hollins said. "We were playing well and we had a lot of people do a lot of good things."
His players seem to have quickly turned the page to Dallas (31-25), which won 95-85 at home over Memphis on Wednesday.
"This is a great win, but tomorrow we have a Dallas team that got on us two nights ago," guard Gilbert Arenas said.
The Grizzlies were a fatigued team that game, playing for the third straight night against a Mavericks team that had Tuesday off. Both teams played Friday heading into this rematch, and Dallas could be more tired this time after losing 99-97 in overtime at home to Portland.
Dirk Nowitzki notched his second straight double-double with 23 points and 14 boards, but his turnover with 19 seconds left in OT gave the Trail Blazers possession and set up LaMarcus Aldridge's buzzer-beating 17-foot jumper.
"It was kind of an instinct play," Nowitzki said. "You see a guy open, you want to throw it to him. Sometimes you make decisions in a split second. I made the wrong one."
The Mavericks led by as many as 15 points before scoring 10 in the third quarter - a season low for any period. They dropped one game behind Memphis into sole possession of sixth place in the West.
Reserve center Ian Mahinmi missed Friday night's game to be with his fiancee for the birth of their child. Mahinmi is expected to rejoin the team Saturday after he tied Nowitzki for the team lead with 10 boards Wednesday against the Grizzlies.
The Mavs remain without veteran point guard Jason Kidd, who has missed three straight games with a groin strain.
Memphis could again be without starting guard Tony Allen, who didn't play Friday with Quincy Pondexter in his place. Allen suffered a facial laceration Wednesday on a hard foul from Brendan Haywood with 5:20 left.
Pondexter was one of only two Grizzlies who failed to reach double digits in points Friday among nine who logged at least 12 minutes. Rudy Gay scored a team-high 17 points and Arenas had 12, his most since joining Memphis last month.
"There's nothing to celebrate," center Marc Gasol said. "We just won a game. Tomorrow is a big game for us at home."
The Grizzlies have won nine of their last 11 at home, where they haven't lost in regulation since a 98-88 defeat to Utah on Feb. 12."
