Notebook: Trail Blazers 99, Mavericks 97.
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS:
LaMarcus Aldridge drained a stepback 16-footer over Brendan Haywood as the buzzer sounded to give Portland a hard-fought 99-97 victory in overtime Friday in Dallas. Aldridge scored six of the Trail Blazers' eight points in the extra session and finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Raymond Felton, whose perimeter shooting helped Portland overcome a 15-point deficit, had a season-high 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Jamal Crawford scored 11 of his 14 points during the fourth quarter.

Dirk Nowitzki led six Mavericks in double figures with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Jason Terry scored 18, Brandan Wright had 13 on 6-for-7 shooting and Shawn Marion tallied 12 points, including the game-tying layup that forced overtime with 15.9 seconds left. Delonte West and Rodrigue Beaubois each scored 10.

QUOTABLE:
"We wanted LaMarcus to get the ball. LaMarcus is our All-Star, and he's working his tail off. To his credit, he hit a big-time shot tonight."-- Portland head coach Kaleb Canales.

THE STAT:
Coupled with Wednesday's 101-88 defeat of New Jersey, Portland has won back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 23-24.

TURNING POINT:
After rebounding a missed 3-pointer by Felton with 22 seconds left and the game tied at 97-97, Nowitzki overthrew a wide-open Marion with a long pass for a critical turnover. Following a timeout by Portland with 3.7 seconds left, Aldridge knocked down the winner.

QUOTABLE II:
"They picked up their intensity, their level of play, and we didn't."
-- Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle on the team's dismal third quarter.

HOT:
Felton outscored Dallas 16-10 in the third quarter, with 12 points coming during the Blazers' 16-0 run to end the period. He sank three 3-pointers and added a three-point play in that spurt. For the game, Felton was 12-for-18 from the field and 5-for-8 behind the arc.

NOT:
The Mavericks were outscored 30-10 in the third, their lowest-scoring quarter of the season. They shot 22 percent (4-for-18) and were killed on the boards (16-8) during the period.

GOOD MOVE:
Wright flushed several crowd-pleasing dunks, including an athletic alley-oop finish that put Dallas ahead 41-26 with 7:42 left in the second quarter. He received a pass from Terry with his right hand, then windmill dunked it with his left.

INSIDE THE ARENA:
The sellout crowd at the American Airlines Center included a group of exchange students from Nowitzki's hometown in Wurzburg, Germany.

NOTABLE:
Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd (right groin strain) missed his third straight game and backup center Ian Mahinmi was not with the team to attend the birth of his child.
... Terry's 3-pointer in the first quarter was the 1,761st of his career, passing former Maverick Peja Stojakovic for fifth place on the NBA's all-time list. Chauncey Billups is fourth with 1,783.
... Interim Portland coach Canales went to school and worked as an assistant coach nearby at the University of Texas at Arlington.
... The Blazers won their first overtime game of the season (1-3) and the Mavericks lost their first (3-1). Dallas beat Portland in double-OT on Feb. 11.

Grizzlies take big early lead, hold off Mavericks.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)"The Memphis Grizzlies landed a solid first-quarter shot on the Dallas Mavericks and dropped the defending NBA champs further down the Western Conference playoff ladder.
Rudy Gay scored 25 points, Zach Randolph added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and the Grizzlies built an early 20-point lead and held on to beat the Mavericks 94-89 on Saturday night.
In the tightly contested Western Conference, Memphis moved two games up in the race for fifth place on Dallas, which is in a three-way fight for sixth and barely holding on to a spot.
"We're now eighth or ninth, so we've got to fight," said Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki, who led the Mavericks with 17 points and eight rebounds. ".We've got to battle and win some games."
Gilbert Arenas added 14 points and made three 3-pointers, while Mike Conley finished with 12 points for Memphis, which won its second straight and seventh in the last nine games.
Arenas helped the Grizzlies hold on when the Mavericks rallied in the second half. His timely 3-point shooting turned back several Dallas runs, the long-range shooting adding a dimension the Grizzlies have wanted.
"It's like he's a video game player. It's just automatic," Conley said. "It's fun to watch when he's shooting like that, and we need that."
Added Memphis coach Lionel Hollins: "Gilbert hitting the 3s has been huge. He has brought in a new spirit for our guys, and it is contagious."
Brandan Wright added a season-high 16 points for Dallas, while Vince Carter had 14 points. Shawn Marion finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Mavericks' second straight loss.
Memphis claimed the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Mavs by winning the season series 2-1.
"Looking at the standings should get us even more motivated," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "I'm not a big watcher of the standings, but for anybody that is, it brings to the forefront the urgency of the situation."
The Mavericks weathered an early 20-point Memphis advantage and pulled close midway through the third period.
But the Grizzlies never let Dallas take the lead, although four free throws by Nowitzki down the stretch cut the Memphis lead to 92-89 with 21.5 seconds left.
Randolph hit a pair of free throws 6 seconds later, and Marc Gasol stole an inbounds pass in the closing seconds to preserve the Memphis victory.
"Tough isn't the word," Marion said. "It's just frustrating in all aspects. We dug ourselves a deep hole."
Dallas missed 13 of its 14 shots, finishing 2 of 15 in the first quarter. Randolph's 3-pointer as the horn sounded at the end of the first frame gave Memphis a 29-10 lead, the 10 points matching Dallas' season-low for points in a quarter.
"We came out with a fast tempo, getting baskets and stopping them," Randolph said. "They missed a lot of shots in the beginning. It was just coming out and playing our game, making defensive stops and getting out in transition."
Nowitzki missed all five of his shots and was 1 of 7 in the half.
The Mavericks got untracked in the second, scoring the first eight points as Memphis began struggling from the field. Jason Terry, who had 12 points on the night, connected on a couple of 3-pointers, and Dallas got the advantage under double digits, when Carter's drive with 1:36 left in the half made it 43-34.
Memphis carried a 50-39 lead into halftime as Gay had 14 points.
The Mavericks continued to chip into the lead in the third, starting the quarter outscoring Memphis 23-13, a rally capped by a 3-pointer from Carter. That pulled Dallas within 63-62, but Memphis pushed it back to 72-67 entering the final period.
Memphis got the lead to 10 once in the fourth, and maintained a five- to seven-point advantage through much of the quarter. Dallas shot 57 percent in the frame, but that was offset by a half dozen turnovers.
"The turnovers just killed us," Marion said. "That's how they were able to capitalize, and that's how they got the win.
".They played hard, but if we did what we were supposed to do, we should have won this game. I am not taking anything away from them, but that's a loss on us, not as much as on them."

NOTES:
The Mavericks were without reserve forward Ian Mahinmi, who welcomed a new baby girl earlier Saturday.
. Memphis G Tony Allen missed his second straight game after getting popped in the mouth during Wednesday's game at Dallas, resulting in seven stitches inside his mouth.
...The game drew 18,119, Memphis' fourth sellout of the season.
...Marion has at least nine rebounds in six of his last eight games.
...Dallas shot 46.6 percent for the game, losing for only the fourth time this season when shooting better than 45 percent.
... Memphis beat both teams who played in last season's NBA finals on consecutive nights and never trailed in either game. The Grizzlies defeated the Miami Heat 97-82 on Friday night."

Notebook: Grizzlies 94, Mavericks 89.
By Marlon W. Morgan, for NBA.com

"THE FACTS:
The Memphis Grizzlies capped off their stretch of seven games in nine days with a 94-89 win over Dallas Saturday night in a game that clinched the season series against Mavericks 2-1. Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies with a game-high 25 points. The Grizzlies went 5-2 during their stretch of games that featured wins at Oklahoma City, at Miami and against the defending NBA champion Mavs.

QUOTABLE:
"We're finally at home. We get a day off and can rest a little bit and have a Happy Easter."
-- Grizzlies guard Mike Conley on the team finishing up playing seven games in nine days.

THE STAT:
Dallas shot just 13 percent (2-for-15) in the first quarter and trailed 29-10. In the final three quarters, the Mavs were 32-for-58 (55 percent) from the floor and managed to outshoot the Grizzlies 47 percent to 39 percent.

TURNING POINT:
The Mavericks trailed the Grizzlies the entire game, but a layup and a 3-pointer by Vince Carter pulled them to within 63-62 late in the third quarter. Enter Gilbert Arenas and Zach Randolph. The outside shooting of Arenas and the inside play of Randolph helped the Grizzlies regain their edge.

HOT:
With his deadly 3-point shooting, Arenas has quickly become a fan favorite at FedExForum. For the second night in a row, the former All-Star guard scored a season-high, this time putting up 14 points on 3-for-6 shooting. Arenas was 3-for-5 from 3-point range and made all five of his free throws before leaving the game with 5:14 to go have banging knees with a Maverick player. Arenas is avering 11 points on .667 shooting over the last four games.

NOT:
O.J. Mayo had an off-night for the second straight game, going 1-for-8 from the floor to finish with six points. In the last two games, Mayo is 5-for-18, and 1-for-7 from 3-point range.

QUOTABLE II:
"Tough isn't the word. It's just frustrating in all aspects. We dug ourselves a big hole. We were playing good defense. We couldn't hit any shots. If everything could go wrong, it went wrong."
-- Dallas forward Shawn Marion after losing their second game in as many nights.

NOTABLE:
Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki never got into a consistent rhythm, finishing with 17 points on 5-for-16 shooting.
... The Grizzlies, one of the NBA's worst 3-point shooting teams, have caught fire from behind the arc since the arrival of Arenas. They actually shot better from 3-point range, making 9-for-20 (45 percent) than they did overall (39 percent). In addition to Arenas making 3-for-5, Gay also hit 3-for-5 and Conley was 2-for-4.
... Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said he's starting to like the dynamics of having Zach Randolph come off the bench. Playing with Arenas, Mayo and Quincy Pondexter gives Randolph better spacing, Hollins said, as team's have to honor those shooters. Randolph had his second straight double-double with 15 points and 11 boards in 29 minutes.
... Dallas remains in eighth place in the Western Conference standings and finds itself trailing Memphis by two games, three in the loss column. Memphis also now owns the tiebreaker over the Mavs.
... Memphis had its second straight wire-to-wire victory.
... The Grizzlies became the first team to beat both defending conference champions on back-to-back days since Indiana in 2003-04 when the knocked off San Antonio and New Jersey."

Lamar Odom leaves Dallas Mavericks.

Report: Odom and Mavericks part ways.
Comments By Gene Farris, USA TODAY.

The Dallas Mavericks and Lamar Odom have parted ways.
By Tony Gutierrez, AP.

"At least Lamar Odom's marriage to the Dallas Mavericks lasted longer than his sister-in-law's marriage to Kris Humphries.

The Mavericks and Lamar Odom will go their separate ways according to a report at ESPNDallas.com.

According to Marc Stein's report:
"The Mavericks and I have mutually agreed that it's in the best interest of both parties for me to step away from the team," Odom said in a statement to ESPN.com. "I'm sorry that things didn't work out better for both of us, but I wish the Mavs' organization, my teammates and Dallas fans nothing but continued success in the defense of their championship."

The team will list him as inactive for the remainder of the season instead of releasing him, opening the possibility of a trade after the season."

Lamar Odom left heart, head in l.a.
By Jeff Caplan | ESPNDallas.com.

"Lamar Odom arrived in Dallas on Dec. 14. His head and heart never made it from los angeles.

"I think when you think about it, that kind of says it all," Odom told reporters on his first day in Dallas referring to how his former team, the los angeles lakers, could trade him for virtually nothing to the rival Mavericks. "I guess it was just time from their standpoint. I guess they just felt like, 'To hell with it.'"

The reality show that is Lamar Odom has ended in Dallas-Fort Worth.

That's apparently finally the conclusion Mavs owner Mark Cuban and coach Rick Carlisle reached following Saturday's 94-89 loss at Memphis. The Mavs were playing shorthanded, yet Odom received just four minutes, all in the first quarter. He played 11 minutes in Friday's home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

And now, the Mavs and Odom are parting ways.

Odom's mind was not on basketball throughout the offseason due to an emotionally difficult summer in his private life. He fell into a deeper mental funk when the lakers tried to trade him to New Orleans in the proposed blockbuster deal for Chris Paul. Odom admitted he didn't train or work on his game. He contemplated not even playing this season. The lakers surely knew this about last season's Sixth Man of the Year. Should the Mavs have looked deeper before pulling the trigger?

Maybe. But, that's in the past and now the Mavs, 31-26 and seventh in the West, have only nine game in front of them to get their act together, get in the playoffs and do their best to defend their title.

This move won't fix all the Mavs' issues, and they have several. But removing Odom from the locker room should provide at the least a collective exhale and a clearing of the air. There will be no questions about him, no more trying to defend him when his body language on and off the court told the whole story for all to see.

Dallas certainly tried to make it work. The club continually opted for positive reinforcement, it tried to pump up his career-low statistics and pointed to the team's 0-7 mark without Odom as a reason to keep him on board, if only to provide minute relief for Dirk Nowitzki. But, the situation was going the wrong way.

This was a move that had to be made. Fans were fed up and players and coaches were too. After Saturday's loss at Memphis, an exasperated Carlisle wouldn't answer a question about Odom, saying, "No Lamar questions tonight." Then Dirk Nowitzki, frustrated with his own subpar outing against the Grizzlies, ended an interview when asked about Odom: "I'm done talking about that."

The Mavs badly wanted it to work and it's why they kept him around. At 6-foot-10 and believed to be as versatile as any forward in the game, the team kept hope that Odom's effort level would spike and he could provide a spark, especially in the postseason.

But Odom continually said he wasn't comfortable playing so much small forward, a position he never played with the Lakers in his seven seasons. With Nowitzki, Odom's preferred power forward position was taken.

This season-long drama is finally over. Odom isn't around. Carlisle will have to figure out an Odom-less rotation behind Nowitzki.

Will this provide a pep in the Mavs' step? Maybe. They still have plenty of issues to work out before the playoffs. They still have to make the playoffs.

But this was a move that had to be made. Odom's clearly left his head and his heart in l.a."

Lamar Odom Leaves Dallas Mavericks, Still Owed $8.2 Million.
By Benge Nsenduluka , Christian Post Contributor.

"Lamar Odom has officially left the Dallas Mavericks after posting disappointing stats since joining in December, and he will now be placed on the team's inactive list for the remainder of the season.

Placing Odom on the team's inactive list as opposed to simply releasing him enables the possibility for the Mavericks to trade him after the season, though any team that picks him up must accept responsibility for the full $8.2 million that he is scheduled to earn in 2012 to 2013.

Odom, who was traded from the los angeles lakers on Dec. 11, has struggled to adapt to his new team, which critics have attributed to his reluctance to leave the lakers, whom he had played for since 2004.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle and Odom's teammate Dirk Nowitzki recently fueled speculation that there was tension amongst the team after Dallas' recent 94-89 defeat to the Grizzlies.

"No Lamar questions tonight," Carlisle bluntly told reporters.

"I'm done talking about that," Mavericks' star forward Nowitzki told reporters before ending an interview.

Odom, who has played 50 games during this season, has averaged just 6.6 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game, which is a far cry from his better days with the lakers, where he averaged 16.5 points, 13.4 rebounds (4.9 offensive and 9.5 defensive) during one season.

Fans of the 32-year-old "Khloe and Lamar" star immediately took to Twitter to weigh in on his departure.

"Oh and look at what just happened to Lamar Odom and the Mavs. That did look like a time bomb ticking," Mav Gonzales tweeted.

"Lamar Odom might be the biggest joke in the NBA, from 6th man of the year to essentially being cut by the Mavs #DramaQueen #NoRespect," Trent Bennett tweeted.

"Good riddance to Lamar Odom! He should have to pay back his check for not really playing this year! #odomsucks," Jason Knight tweeted."

Dumping Lamar Odom won't impact Deron Williams pursuit.
By Tim MacMahon|ESPNDallas.com.
"Don’t spend a second worrying about whether the Mavs finally doing the right thing and dumping Lamar Odom will have any impact on the potential of Deron Williams coming to Dallas this summer.

Yes, they’re represented by the same agent, Jeff Schwartz. That doesn’t lessen the high likelihood that Williams, who grew up in nearby The Colony, will have a max-contract homecoming as a free agent this summer.

Guess what? If anything, Schwartz owes the Mavs a major favor at this point. He orchestrated the deal that shipped Odom from l.a. to Dallas after the emotionally soft reigning Sixth Man of the Year got his feelings hurt because the lakers tried to include him in a blockbuster to get Chris Paul. The Mavs got a player in horrendous shape physically and worse shape mentally.

The Mavs more than held up their end of the bargain. They bent over backward trying to get a man with an $8.9 million salary – plus a $2.4 million buyout due by June 29 – to care enough to play hard for the defending NBA champions.

Heck, Mark Cuban spent a couple of days practically giving Khloe’s little Lam Lam foot massages in the W Hotel while the rest of the Mavs were on the road during the most difficult schedule grind of the season. And Cuban still stuck up for Odom afterward, pumping nothing but sunshine about the NBA’s most underachieving player this season.

“You never see us calling out or talking [negatively] about players,” Cuban said last week, speaking in general terms when asked about the drama that had unfolded in Orlando. “If anything, if I’m doing something relative to a player, I’m taking a bullet for him as opposed to shooting one at them.”

Cuban took a bunch of bullets for Odom. Schwartz surely knows that. The only potential benefit of Odom’s awful four months with the Mavs is that it provided further evidence that the Mavs will do everything in their power to try to help a player be successful.

The Mavs should have dumped Odom weeks ago. There was a strong feeling in the locker room that he never should have been welcomed back after Odom’s bizarre, self-imposed, 10-day midseason sabbatical. This is all on Odom.

If Schwartz isn’t sure about that, he can just ask Jason Kidd, the client who has made the power-broker agent more money than anybody. You can rest assured that Kidd wasn’t thrilled that Odom refused to commit to actually trying to help the Mavs repeat.

Kidd, by the way, has also made it clear he’d be happy to back up his golf buddy Williams in Dallas next season."

..Lamar Odom leaves Dallas Mavericks after rocky, disappointing season.
..By Dan Devine.

"Lamar Odom and the Dallas Mavericks will part ways. (Getty Images)And so it's come to this: Lamar Odom's time as a member of the Dallas Mavericks ends not with a bang, not with playoff redemption or a long-hoped-for moment in the sun after a season shrouded in darkness, but with a whimper of what amounts to a release.

According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein, an agreement reached Sunday allows the two sides to part company immediately, with the long-struggling Odom leaving Dallas for the remainder of the season without the defending NBA champs actually having to release him, and thus holding on to his rights.

"The Mavericks and I have mutually agreed that it's in the best interest of both parties for me to step away from the team," Odom said in a statement to ESPN.com. "I'm sorry that things didn't work out better for both of us, but I wish the Mavs' organization, my teammates and Dallas fans nothing but continued success in the defense of their championship." [...]

Sources said Monday that Odom's departure will be immediate and that the Mavericks intend to simply list him as inactive for the rest of the season instead of outright releasing him, leaving open the possibility that they could still trade him after the season in conjunction with the draft. Any team that has Odom on its roster as of June 29 must buy him out by that date for $2.4 million or otherwise accept responsibility for the full $8.2 million that Odom is scheduled to earn in 2012-13.

The Mavs acquired the 13-year veteran before the season started in what looked like a steal of a deal with the los angeles lakers. Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson sent the lakers a 2012 first-round draft pick and an $8.9 million trade exception for Odom, who reportedly demanded lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak trade him after feeling betrayed by his inclusion in a league-vetoed deal that would have sent Chris Paul to the Staples Center and made Odom a part of the New Orleans Hornets.

At the time of the trade, the Mavs were thought to have scored a huge coup — Odom, a 6-foot-10 jack of all trades and reigning Sixth Man of the Year, could help cushion the loss of championship center Tyson Chandler in free agency, giving the Mavs a versatile frontcourt scorer and defender whom coach Rick Carlisle could deploy in a variety of lineups to create matchup nightmares for opposing defenses. That vision never materialized, though.

Odom struggled mightily from the season's opening tip, posting career lows in virtually every statistical category, eliciting vociferous boos from the Dallas faithful and looking like a lost soul more often than not. His on-court struggles followed a tumultuous offseason during which one of his cousins (someone Odom called "one of my favorite people in the world") died after being shot. Shortly thereafter, Odom was a passenger in an SUV that was involved in an accident that killed a teenage cyclist. After spending his offseason months dealing with those tragedies, Odom never seemed quite ready to contribute, whether physically (he came into the season out of shape, especially in comparison to last year, when he'd just come off a stellar turn for the U.S. national team in the FIBA World Championships) or emotionally.

Phil Jackson, who saw Odom shine as a sixth man during his time with the los angeles lakers, reached out in hopes of jumpstarting the struggling 32-year-old forward, but it was to no avail. When Odom's poor play continued after a four-game leave of absence from the team — during which he returned to l.a. to tend to his father, who'd reportedly had a health scare — the Mavs decided to send him down to the D-League, an unprecedented step for a player of his caliber, where they hoped some time away from the spotlight to just get out on the court and play would help him get right. It didn't. And now, he's gone.

What comes next for Odom is anybody's guess, but it seems like a good bet that he'll take some time away from the game to get his house in order. After coming back from his stint with Del Harris and the Texas Legends, Odom spoke with Yahoo! Sports NBA writer Marc J. Spears about his struggles on the court, the myriad hardships he's faced off the court, and trying to get a handle on why things are the way they are.

"I'm just trying to understand life, really," Odom said. "You think somebody got it bad and then you turn on the news and read about somebody else's situation, and they got it just as bad, if not worse, than you do. There is still a lot to smile about even with the trials and tribulations.

"I'm one of those dudes who feel like I go through it for a reason. The reason is to make me better."

As someone who loves the collection of talents at Odom's disposal and the joyful brand of basketball he plays when he's at peace and firing on all cylinders, here's hoping he's able to figure it out. Lamar Odom deserves a better ending than this..."

Lamar Odom and the Dallas Mavericks are Parting Ways.
Least surprising NBA news this month: Lamar Odom and the Mavericks have parted ways.

Nobody can pick up Odom for the rest of the playoffs, which probably means after the Mavericks are bounced in the first round (there’s a chance the defending champs miss the playoffs),...."

Kings-Mavericks Preview.
By MATT BEARDMORE.

"The Dallas Mavericks finally got back on track following a rough start, but now there's real concern they won't even get the chance to defend their NBA title.

If Dallas does make another playoff push, first-year Mav Lamar Odom won't be along for the ride.

The Mavericks go for a 16th consecutive home win over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night, a day after announcing Odom's season in Dallas is done.

After winning the franchise's first NBA championship, Dallas (31-26) opened 2011-12 by losing three straight and four of five.

The Mavericks recovered from their championship hangover and climbed to fourth in the Western Conference with a season-best six-game run Feb. 8-17, but they've gone 11-15 since and are clinging to one of the final three playoffs spots.

"I'm not a big watcher of the standings, but for anybody that is, it brings to the forefront the urgency of the situation," coach Rick Carlisle said following Saturday's 94-89 loss at Memphis.

Before opening a four-game trip, Dallas will try to avoid a third consecutive loss and second in a row at home.

The Mavericks will have to do so without Odom, who Monday was placed on the inactive list - where he'll remain for the rest of the season. Odom averaged career lows of 6.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in just over 20 minutes a game while shooting 35.2 percent.

After being acquired from the los angeles lakers shortly before the season - Odom would have gone to New Orleans as part of a trade for Chris Paul had the league not nixed that deal - the veteran forward has been unable to fit into Dallas' system.

The Mavericks, who called up Kelenna Azubuike from the D-League on Monday, are not expected to waive last season's Sixth Man of the Year.

"I'm done talking about (Odom)," Nowitzki said following Saturday's loss.

With that distraction behind them, the Mavericks can focus on extending a regular-season home winning streak over Sacramento (19-38) that began in January 2004.

Dallas won 99-60 in the Kings' last visit to American Airlines Center on Jan. 14. It was the fewest points ever allowed by the Mavericks, and Sacramento's 23 first-half points were a franchise low.

The Kings ended a 10-game skid in this series with a 110-97 home win March 9, but they enter this contest with just two wins in their last 11 games.

They dropped their fourth in a row Sunday, 104-87 to Houston, as injuries to Marcus Thornton (bruised left calf) and Francisco Garcia (concussion) forced coach Keith Smart to give rookie Jimmer Fredette his first start since Jan. 31. Fredette finished with 17 points but was unable to contain Courtney Lee, who scored 17 of his 25 in the opening 12 minutes as Sacramento fell behind by 11.

"We've got guys that are normally in the rotation, trying to come in, trying to play frontline teams, NBA players who are starters on other teams," Smart told the league's official website. "... But you know, you've got to fight through it and we will fight through it."

Thornton could return as the Kings open this three-game trip after missing the last four. Garcia is questionable, as is John Salmons, who has missed eight straight with a sore hip.

Whoever is on the court needs to take care of the ball and make free throws. Sacramento has committed 41 turnovers in the last two games while hitting just 39 of 65 from the foul line.

DeMarcus Cousins has missed nine of 15 free throws during that stretch and has averaged 10.7 points over his last three since scoring a career-high 41 last Tuesday against Phoenix.

The Kings are a conference-worst 5-23 on the road."

Dallas Mavericks find offensive stride against Kings.
Posted By Dwain Price.

DALLAS--"The air seemed fresher and the drama certainly was behind them.
In their first game post-Lamar Odom, the Dallas Mavericks put on one of their best offensive performances of the season in racing past the Sacramento Kings 110-100 on Tuesday night at American Airlines Center.
It was a game where the Mavericks got 15 points apiece from Dirk Nowitzki and Rodrigue Beaubois and13 points apiece from Jason Terry and Delonte West in one of their most balanced offensive showings of the season.
And it all came on the heels on Monday's explosive events, when the Mavericks parted ways with Odom, who was the big-time off-season acquisition they thought would help them win back-to-back NBA titles. So, were the Mavs all-in against the Kings now that they know that the team's biggest distraction is no longer around?
"This is a team, we've got a lot of veteran guys in here, so we've dealt with worse," Terry said. "It's a situation that it wasn't working out and management has decided to move on, as has the team.
"We wish him luck in his future endeavors. But as far as the Dallas Mavericks, we are a team vying for playoff position and we're ready to go forward."
The Mavericks improved their record to 32-26 and will embark on a four-game road trip, which starts Thursday at Golden State. But they do so knowing they were able to grab tons of confidence while shooting 50 percent form the field and outrebounding the Kings by 16.
"He was part of this team all year and I'm sorry that situation happened," said Shawn Marion, who had 10 points and 14 rebounds. "Everybody is still going to compete and step up their scoring."
The Mavericks led 27-25 after the first quarter and 57-50 at the half. Yi Jianlian picked up some of the minutes that would have gone to Odom and responded with eight points in eight minutes.
Also, Jason Kidd returned after missing four games with a strained right groin and contributed seven points, six rebounds and seven assists in 22 minutes.
"[Odom's] gone, but again our biggest difference is Jason Kidd is back," Terry said. "When you have your leader, your point guard, I think that's more of what we're looking at with the feel of everything out here."
And smoothness is exactly what coach Rick Carlisle was looking for.
"This is the first time we've had this complement of players healthy," Carlisle said. "It's a beginning. We don't have a lot of time to be experimenting and this and that. Every second counts from here on out, and we know that."
The Mavs also know victories like the one they got against the Kings must continue if they want to enhance their standing in the Western Conference.
"It's always fun when you're playing for something," Terry said. "Right now, as you know, each game is critical, and obviously tonight was a big win for us."

Kings Vs. Mavericks: Dallas Extends Home Dominance Over Sacramento.
By Steve von Horn.

"The Dallas Mavericks extended the third-longest active home winning streak over a single opponent in the NBA by knocking off the Sacramento Kings for the 16th-straight time.

"On Tuesday night, the Dallas Mavericks extended its home winning streak over the Sacramento Kings to 16 games with a strong bench effort that propped up a 110-100 victory. The Mavs' prolonged dominance over the Kings represents the third-longest active home winning streak over a single opponent in the NBA, behind only the Phoenix Suns' 25-year reign of terror over the Milwaukee Bucks (24 straight games) and the San Antonio Spurs' mastery of the Golden State Warriors (27 consecutive wins). In the latest iteration of this trend, Dallas dug a hole immediately after the opening tip, regained control in the second quarter with help from Vince Carter, Rodrigue Beaubois, Brandon Wright and Yi Jianlian, and then never relinquished the lead in the final 24 minutes.

While most of the chatter surrounding the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday centered around news that owner Mark Cuban confronted Lamar Odom in the locker room at halftime during of Saturday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies (right before the team moved Odom to the inactive list for the remainder of the season), the Mavs found a measure of joy in the fact that Jason Kidd returned to the starting lineup after missing four games with a groin injury. The 17-year veteran started quickly with three of his six points and two of his game-high seven assists in the opening quarter, but none of his Dallas starters front-loaded their evening.

In fact, the Kings attacked the paint from inception -- they scored 18 points on 9-13 shooting in the paint during the first quarter -- which prompted quick timeouts from Rick Carlisle as they mounted an 8-2 advantage and then a 14-7 margin. DeMarcus Cousins opened the game 4-4 in the first six minutes and appeared primed for one of those truly spectacular nights, but he slowed his roll on offense and instead settled on just an eye-popping double-double that featured 25 points on 11-21 shooting and 18 rebounds and paired well with a career-high five steals.

Sacramento played opportunistic basketball in the early going. Isiah Thomas (16 points, five assists, four rebounds) and company pushed the pace and raced into transition as the Mavs committed nine turnovers in the first 16 minutes. Then Carlisle turned to the bench for a spark that changed the complexion of the game. In the second period, Beaubois stepped up with seven of his 15 points and both of his assists, while NBA prospect turned bench bum Yi Jianlian paid off pick-and-pops and drive-and-kicks with 4-4 shooting and all eight of his points during his stint. Jimmer Fredette eight of his 15 during an impressive run, but even he couldn't prevent Dallas from claiming a 32-23 victory in the second quarter.

After halftime, the Kings never quite moved within striking distance again. Tyreke Evans (16 points, five assists) pulled the margin down to four midway through the third, but that's as close as Sacramento ever came. Shawn Marion helped protect the lead by grabbing eight offensive rebounds en route to a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double, while Dirk Nowitzki (15 points, eight rebounds) and Delonte West (13 points) back-loaded their respective efforts to pace the offense. As expected, Dallas used its experience to hold off any runs and finished up with a 110-100 win.

With the victory, Dallas tightened its grip on the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference playoff bracket and is now 0.5 game up on the Houston Rockets for the final seed and 1.5 games ahead of the Phoenix Suns."
