"The Dallas Mavericks are coming off of their best season in franchise history. They had their 11th straight 50+-win season that was capped off with the ultimate victory: The 2011 NBA Championship. The Mavs steamrolled through the playoffs, knocking out foes with reckless abandon. They swept the perennial champion Los Angeles Lakers, and exacted revenge upon the Miami Heat to take the title.

This seemingly miraculous feat would not have been possible without the key acquisition of one Tyson Chandler, who quickly became the team’s emotional leader when he was traded to Dallas in the summer of 2010. With his high-octane attitude and talent to back it up, the Mavericks found a new defensive presence that had been lacking in previous seasons.

They had some hiccups along the way, namely the season-ending injury of Caron Butler, who tore his patellar tendon after showing signs of having one of his best seasons yet. The team rallied, however, and leaned on their bench for support. Sixth man Jason Terry found himself among the best fourth-quarter players in the league, and Jose Juan (JJ) Barea finished the season out strong, providing an inside game where there previously was none.

And how could we forget the man, the legend, the Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki? We couldn’t. After last season, in his free agency, he made the decision to remain loyal and true to the only team he had ever played for, and in doing so he took less money so that owner Mark Cuban could try and put together a solid supporting cast. He played some of the most beautiful basketball of his career as he single-handedly (literally and figuratively) carried the Mavericks through the playoffs into the winner’s circle. He firmly entrenched himself among the game’s greatest, showing a quiet determination and resolve rarely seen in professional sports.

Whether or not there is an NBA season this year remains to be seen, but Dallas fans aren’t too distressed because the lockout means that our old players like Dirk and Jason Kidd can let their weary bones heal from an exhausting season. Not to mention the Mavericks get to be World Champs for even longer! The number one goal before the league resumes play (whenever that may be) is to re-sign Tyson Chandler. After that it would be nice if they could keep Caron Butler, but we have no idea what this lockout will do to their ability to afford their own players.

Regardless of what the future holds, right now is a pretty sweet time to be a Dallas Mavericks fan. Our storybook season may have come to a close in June, but the pride we feel for our team won’t soon fade away."

Mavericks Vs. Kings: Behind A Balanced Scoring Attack, Dallas Wins 110-100.
Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE.

"It was close the whole way, but the Mavericks stemmed the bleeding from their recent skid.

Western Conference Standings Update: Mavericks Holding On At Seventh.
The Dallas Mavericks currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference at 32-26, and a playoff berth is far from certain.

The middle of the Western Conference standings are a logjam. The Mavs are only two games behind the fifth-place Memphis Grizzlies, but they're also just two games ahead of the 10th-place Utah Jazz. Dallas has struggled on the road this season, and six of the Mavs' final eight games are on the road, so it's going to be tough, but only four of those games are against current playoff teams.

The Mavs are fourth in the Southwest Division, which has been all but wrapped up by the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are one game behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for first in the Western Conference. Behind the Spurs are the lakers and Clippers, but the final two spots for home-court in the first round still are up for grabs. The Mavericks have had one of the worst seasons by a defending champ in recent memory, and missing the playoffs would be a disaster.

Mavericks Vs. Kings: Dallas Takes Must-Win Game Against Kings 110-100
Entering Tuesday, the Mavericks were in seventh place in the Western Conference and the chance to defend their NBA championship was up in the air. The season is far from over, but Tuesday's 110-100 win over the Sacramento Kings was a game the Mavs could not afford to lose.

Of the Mavs' final nine games, only three are at home, and Dallas is just 11-16 on the road, so the Mavs need to win the home games. Tuesday's win against Sacramento leaves two home games on the schedule.

Six Mavericks scored at least nine points, led by 15 from Dirk Nowitzki and Rodrique Beaubois. Shawn Marion scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. After missing the last four games due to a groin injury, Jason Kidd scored seven points, grabbed six rebounds and had seven assists in 22 minutes, although he only played eight minutes in the second half.

The Mavs led by seven at halftime, but couldn't pull away in the second half. The Kings got as close as five points in the fourth quarter, but Delonte West scored seven points in the final six minutes for the Mavs. DeMarcus Cousins finished with 25 points and 18 rebounds for the Kings."

Mavs gets much-needed win, 110-100 over Kings.
By STEPHEN HAWKINS.
DALLAS (AP)"The Dallas Mavericks finally won a game without Lamar Odom, who is no longer an option for them.
Rodrigue Beaubouis, Jason Terry and the rest of the guys still coming off the bench for the defending NBA champions did just fine in a much-needed victory before going on the road, 110-100 over the struggling Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night.
Yi Jainlian, a 7-foot forward from China, added eight points with four long jumpers in a 5-minute span of the second quarter when the Mavericks went ahead to stay.
"We needed it. (The backups) had good energy put the ball in the basket," coach Rick Carlisle said. "I thought Yi's minutes were vital. ... It energized us, kept us going."
Dirk Nowitzki and Beaubois each had 15 points to lead six players in double figures for the Mavs, who lost three of their previous four games. They are seventh in the Western Conference standings, a half-game behind sixth-place Houston and only a half-game ahead of Denver.
Dallas (32-26) plays six of its last eight games on the road, with a four-game trip in five days starting Thursday at Golden State. They play at home again next Wednesday against the Rockets.
"We've got a lot of veterans in here and we've been through worse than that," Terry said when asked about Odom's departure. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors, but that's now all in the past and we are focused on the job at hand, and that's making the playoffs."
In a strange twist, Dallas was 0-7 in games Odom missed before Tuesday, a day after the team said they had parted ways with the NBA's reigning Sixth Man of the Year. His averages of 6.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 20.5 minutes in his underwhelming 50-game stint were career lows.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said the end came after a heated halftime exchange with Odom after the forward's uninspired four minutes at Memphis on Saturday night.
"I just asked him, does he want to go for it or not. Is he in or is he out? I think he thought we were playing poker. I just didn't get a commitment. And that was the end," Cuban said before the game in his first public comments about Odom's departure.
When asked if that was the first time he noticed Odom having such a demeanor, Cuban responded, "No, but the first 17 times, I decided to try to help him and turn it into a positive."
Odom is still on the roster, but Dallas said he would be listed as inactive for the rest of its games and is no longer with the team.
Carlisle said the Mavericks are only focused on what they have to do moving forward.
Delonte West and Jason Terry each had 13 points, and Brendan Haywood 11 for Dallas. Shawn Marion had 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Dallas never trailed again after a 12-3 run over a 2 1/2-minute span early in the second quarter with none of its starters on the floor. Beaubois started it with a three-point play and Vince Carter had a 3-pointer for a 31-29 lead.
Marcus Thornton made a 3-pointer for the Kings before Yi had back-to-back jumpers that sandwiched a blocked shot by Carter before one of the highlight play of the night.
Carter had a steal and pushed the ball ahead to Terry, who threw the ball up in the air over his shoulder to a flying Brandan Wright for a powerful dunk.
After Sacramento tied the game for the last time, Beaubois had two free throws and Yi had two more long jumpers.
DeMarcus Cousins had 25 points and 18 rebounds for the Kings (19-39), who have lost five in a row and 10 of 12.
Thornton, Isaiah Thomas and Tyreke Evans each had 16 points for the Kings. Jimmer Fredette had 13.
Sacramento had an 8-0 run to get within 92-87 in the fourth quarter before Delonte West stole the ball from Cousins and got fouled. West hit both free throws to start a game-clinching 12-4 run.
"I thought the tone was set for us to play, we had to make sure we kept this game under control," Kings coach Keith Smart said. " We had a few little details of turning the ball over or maybe some quick shots, but that's what you get with a team that's trying to learn how to win and close out quarters."

NOTES:
Jason Kidd returned for Dallas after missing four games with a strained right groin. The 39-year-old guard had seven points on 2-of-5 shooting with two air balls in his 1,310th career game, most among active players and 10th on the all-time list.
... Carter had a powerful one-handed slam over the 7-foot Hassan Whiteside in the third quarter, soon after missing a layup and being called for traveling trying to shoot again.
.. .Dallas had won 10 consecutive regular-season games in the series before Sacramento's 110-97 win at home last month."

Notebook: Mavericks 110, Kings 100
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com

"THE FACTS:
A group effort by Shawn Marion and the Mavericks offset a great effort by DeMarcus Cousins and gave Dallas a desperately needed 110-100 victory over the Sacramento Kings at the American Airlines Center on Tuesday.

Marion led six Mavericks in double figures with 10 points and 14 rebounds for his 10th double-double. Dirk Nowitzki added 15 points and eight boards and Delonte West had 13 points, while reserves Rodrigue Beaubois (15 points) and Jason Terry (13) fueled the Mavs' 54-23 advantage in bench points.

Cousins contributed game highs of 25 points and 18 rebounds to go with a career-high six steals, three assists and two blocked shots. Marcus Thornton, Tyreke Evans and Isaiah Thomas each scored 16 for the Kings, who dropped their fifth straight game.

QUOTABLE: "We just need to come prepared and ready for business the next [eight] games. Everybody needs to be focused so we can make a push for the playoffs."
-- Mavericks guard Vince Carter, who had seven points, seven rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

THE STAT:
This was the Mavericks' 16th straight victory in the series at the AAC. The Kings have not won in Dallas since Feb. 27, 2003.

TURNING POINT:
Both teams shot exactly 44.6 percent (41-for-92). The difference was that Dallas was more aggressive, attacking the glass and getting to the line. The Mavericks won the battle of the boards 56-40, including 17-8 on the offensive glass. They had a 20-10 advantage in second-chance points and made 12 more free throws than the Kings.

QUOTABLE II:
"This is the first time we've had this complement of players healthy. It's a beginning. We don't have a lot of time to be experimenting and this and that. Every second counts from here on out, and we know that."-- Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle.

HOT:
With the disgruntled and disinterested Lamar Odom out of the picture in Dallas, Yi Jianlian took advantage of his increased playing time. He swished all four of his field-goal attempts in the second quarter, draining jumpers from 17, 20, 20 and 22 feet to match his season high of eight points. He heard more cheers in about four minutes that quarter than Odom did in four months.

NOT:
The Mavericks committed seven turnovers in the first quarter on their way to 17 miscues for the second straight game. The Kings were credited with 12 steals.

BAD MOVE:
After the Kings cut the Mavericks' lead to 92-87 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Thornton and Jimmer Fredette, Cousins stalled the momentum with a silly foul. Prone on the floor under his own basket, he reached up and flattened West with an arm tackle. West made both free throws with 5:58 left, then canned a 3-pointer on Dallas' next possession to push the lead back to 10.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT:
After missing four games last week with a strained right groin, Dallas point guard Jason Kidd looked rested and re-energized. He finished with seven points, seven assists, six rebounds, two blocks and one steal.

NOTABLE:
Dallas is 17-1 when scoring 100 or more points.
... Only two of the Mavericks' eight remaining regular-season games are at home.
... The Kings are just 5-24 on the road.
... Dallas (32-26) gained some ground in the Western Conference playoff race on idle Denver (31-26), Phoenix (30-27) and Utah (30-28).

UP NEXT:
For the Mavericks, Thursday @ Golden State, Friday @ Portland.
For the Kings, Wednesday @ New Orleans."

Mavericks-Warriors Preview.
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN.

"Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle is trying some new combinations in the wake of the messy departure of Lamar Odom.

Carlisle's Mavericks begin a critical four-game road trip over a five-day span Thursday night when they meet the Golden State Warriors.

Dallas (32-26) won for the first time in eight tries without Odom with a 110-100 home victory over Sacramento on Tuesday. Odom and the Mavericks mutually agreed to part ways Monday, and one day later, owner Mark Cuban said the final straw was an exchange he had with the forward during Saturday's 94-89 loss at Memphis.

Without Odom, Dallas avoided a third straight loss with six players reaching double figures.

"We've got a lot of veterans in here and we've been through worse than that," Terry said when asked about Odom's departure. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors, but that's now all in the past and we are focused on the job at hand, and that's making the playoffs."

The Mavericks are in a three-way tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with Denver and Houston. Those teams are 1 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Utah.

Carlisle led the team through an intense workout Wednesday in San Francisco after the Mavericks traveled west early to prepare for this trip. The coach gave 7-footer Yi Jianlian his first minutes in four games Tuesday and has indicated he will continue to mix and match who he puts on the floor.

"We have a lot of things to work on with our chemistry," Carlisle told the Mavericks' official website. "We're gonna have some different rotations with our second unit and there's gonna be fluidity with it. So, you know, we've gotta get together quickly really on both sides of the ball."

Another player Carlisle is counting on now is Brandan Wright, who is averaging 12.7 points on 60.7 percent shooting in his last three games. Wright will play at Golden State (22-35) for the first time since he spent his first two-plus years with the Warriors.

The 6-foot-10 forward missed Dallas' 111-87 loss at Golden State on March 10 due to a concussion. That matchup, however, won't be indicative of what to expect in this rematch.

Jason Kidd sat out that night with the Mavs playing for the third time in as many nights. Kidd returned Tuesday after missing four games with a groin strain and had seven points and seven assists.

Dallas won't have to worry about facing Monta Ellis this time. Ellis, who had 20 points in last month's meeting, was dealt to Milwaukee on March 14.

Stephen Curry, meanwhile, started for the Warriors as Ellis' backcourt mate. The third-year guard has been out since March 11 due to his troublesome right ankle.

Golden State has dropped nine of 11 and will have to regroup quickly after Wednesday's 118-110 loss at Portland. David Lee had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Golden State, which lost 123-84 to Denver on Monday.

"That may be an excuse for other teams, but for us that's unacceptable," said coach Mark Jackson about his absences. "The last two games we haven't been ourselves."

Mavericks survive late run, top Warriors 112-103.
ANTONIO GONZALEZ, AP Sports Writer.
OAKLAND, Calif. --"Sweating out the last month of the playoff chase might be just what the Dallas Mavericks need to regroup for another run at an NBA title.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 points and former Golden State lottery pick Brandan Wright had 16 points and nine rebounds, leading the Mavericks past the Warriors 112-103 on Thursday night in another unexpectedly tight game for the defending champions.

"We'd rather have this than resting guys," said Jason Terry, who had 16 points and made some big shots late.

Jason Kidd added 12 assists, 10 rebounds and nine points to pace the Mavericks to a 19-point lead before hanging on late, moving 1 1/2 games behind Memphis for the Western Conference's fifth playoff seed. The Grizzlies lost 107-97 to San Antonio earlier in the night.

The Mavericks are just a half-game ahead of Denver and Houston and trying to regain that rhythm that propelled them to an improbable title last summer.

"It's the kind of pressure that you like," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "It brings you to higher levels and we embrace it. We embraced it last year in the playoffs and it got us a ring."

They'll take a better seeding, for now, even if it comes in shaky wins against an overmatched opponent.

David Lee had 30 points and eight rebounds and rookie Klay Thompson finished with 24 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the shorthanded Warriors. Golden State has lost three straight and is already eliminated from playoff contention.

"We, for some reason in the first half, were a step behind on every play defensively, and you could just see it sometimes as a coach and as a player," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said.

Dallas survived late behind its usual playmakers.

After the Warriors whittled the deficit to three early in the fourth quarter, Nowitzki returned and took charge. The 7-footer made a difficult fadeaway and backed down defenders for a layup to start an avalanche of offense.

Terry followed by swishing a walk-up 3-pointer in front of the Warriors' bench. Then Nowitzki passed out of a double-team to find Vince Carter for another 3 and put away Golden State for good.

These Warriors had little chance of a lasting comeback.

Point guard Stephen Curry (sprained right ankle) and center Andrew Bogut (fractured left ankle) are likely out for the season. Leading scorer Monta Ellis and forward Ekpe Udoh departed in the trade that netted Bogut from Milwaukee, and Jackson has only a shattered roster remaining to explain why his misguided playoff prediction predictably flopped.

Not until Nate Robinson swished a jumper and a 3-pointer and Brandon Rush dunked to open the fourth did Warriors fans -- who still packed Oracle Arena with an announced crowd of 17,929 to cheer a franchise with one playoff appearance since 1994 -- get riled up for anything other than next season. The shots sliced Dallas' lead to 89-86, giving the defending NBA champions a scare.

"It means nothing when you give up 112 points," Thompson said.

The scare was brief.

The site of another familiar face -- a constant theme in these parts -- ripping the home team did most of that early.

Wright, drafted eighth overall by the Warriors in 2007, bullied and bruised his way around the paint against Golden State's undersized frontline. He had 12 points and six rebounds off the bench by halftime, including a pair of dunks.

The Mavericks, who plucked the injury-riddled Wright -- traded to New Jersey by the Warriors after 2 1/2 seasons -- out of free agency in December, opened the game open behind patches of open space with the forward drawing so much attention. Nowitzki followed with a flurry of jumpers, giving Dallas a 60-41 lead late in the second quarter to take complete control.

"It's a race to the finish line," said Mavericks forward Shawn Marion, who scored 7 points. "Every game counts here on out."

Game notes:
Bogut was shooting around before the game without his walking boot for the first time since being acquired in the March 13 trade.
... The Mavericks improved to 12-5 against the Warriors since being upset by Golden State in the first round of the 2007 playoffs, when Dallas was the top seed and coming off an NBA finals loss to Miami a year earlier.
... The Warriors held the team's second annual Bollywood Night, which featured Indian-themed music, outfits and other entertainment during intermissions."

Golden State Warriors rally but lose to Dallas Mavericks.
By Marcus Thompson II.

"Thursday's 112-103 loss to the visiting Dallas Mavericks at Oracle Arena was a perfect scenario for many Warriors fans.

They got to see some standout performances, namely one from rookie shooting guard Klay Thompson, who totaled 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

They got to see a competitive game, as Golden State fought back from 19 down to get as close as three early in the fourth quarter. They even got a free smoothie from Jamba Juice, the prize for the Warriors topping 100.

To top it all off, they got a loss -- keeping alive the Warriors' hopes of keeping their 2012 first-round draft pick. With an eye toward the June draft, many Warriors fans are happy each time Golden State loses.

But the losing ways aren't sitting well with some of the youngsters on the roster.

"I hate it," rookie shooting guard Klay Thompson said before the game. "Burns me up."

"I'm (upset) after every loss," added rookie big man Jeremy Tyler. "After every one."

With the loss to the defending champions, Golden State has dropped three straight and 15 of its last 19 games. The Warriors season has spiraled out of control, and now all everyone can talk about is whether they can lose enough to keep the draft pick.

But Warriors coach Mark Jackson is adamant that his team not get comfortable with losing. That's why at halftime, with the Warriors down 14, he got on their case.

"I was very disappointed with our effort," Jackson said.

"We got in at halftime, we talked about it, and the way we played in the second half is what we expected in closing out the season. We battled, gave ourselves a chance. We had some breakdowns. But the energy and effort was certainly there."

In 2008, the Warriors traded a first-round pick to New Jersey for point guard Marcus Williams. Thanks to the conditions of the pick, and a tweaking of the deal, the Warriors have yet to give up the pick.

New Jersey traded the Warriors' pick to Utah in the Deron Williams trade, so it now belongs to Utah. The only way Golden State will keep its 2012 first-round pick is if it's one of the top seven selections. If it's lower, it goes to the Jazz. Considering the prominence of this draft, which is widely considered a good one, keeping the pick would be a serious coup for the Warriors.

The lower the Warriors finish in the standings, the better their chances of keeping that pick. The order of the draft won't be decided until May 30. But where the Warriors finish affects their chances in the lottery.

Golden State entered Thursday's game with the ninth-worst record in the league. If that stands, the Warriors' only hope of keeping their first-rounder would be to land one of the top three picks in the lottery. They would have a 6.1 percent chance of that happening.

Of the Warriors' eight games remaining, six are against winning teams and four are on the road -- including their one back-to-back-to-back set. Losing out would be the best way to help the Warriors keep their pick. Winning more than one of their final games would likely leave them with slim hopes of retaining their lottery pick.

The seventh-worst record in the NBA is owned by New Jersey (21-38). With eight games left after Thursday's game against visiting Dallas, the Warriors have time to catch the Nets.

Of course, the draft possibilities aren't exactly consoling the Warriors' rookies.

"It really bothers me," Thompson said. "I don't even like moral victories."

Warriors forward David Lee had a game-high 30 points to go with eight rebounds. He also had five turnovers in 40 minutes. Over his past eight games, he is averaging 23.1 points on 49.7 percent shooting with 9.3 rebounds.

Mavericks forward Brandan Wright, a former Warrior, seems to have finally found a place to thrive. He finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes on Thursday.

He's become a regular part of the rotation in Dallas the second half of the season, and he's producing.

In his last 30 games entering Thursday, he's averaged 7.5 points on 61.5 percent shooting with 3.7 rebounds in 18.5 minutes.

Wright flamed out with Golden State and was traded to New Jersey in February 2010. He never lived up to expectations with the Warriors after being acquired from Charlotte on draft day in exchange for then-face-of-the-franchise Jason Richardson.

Cal-product Jason Kidd finished a point shy of a triple-double. He had 12 assists and 10 rebounds."

Dallas Mavericks @ Golden State Warriors Post Game 59 Quotes "Never underestimate Greatness."
by DOH.

"What the Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors said after Game Fiftynine of the Perfect Season.

Quotes
Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle
(On Brandan Wright) "Wright was terrific all night. It was the kind of game where if a team is playing small, he’s a valuable guy because he can be a presence at the rim and he can guard perimeter guys when needed."

(On Jason Kidd) "Never underestimate greatness. I don’t care if that guy [Kidd] is 29, 39 or 49, he’s going to do something to help you win."

(On the biggest Thing) "We’ve put together a couple wins which is positive. We had a couple ugly stretches tonight, but those things happen. Right now, the biggest thing we have to do is get showered, get on the plane to Portland, get settled in there and get ready for a battle tomorrow night, because each game is super meaningful for us. It’s not only trying to win games, it’s trying to get playing better and that’s a task."

(On Playoff mode) "We've been talking about playoff mode for two-and-a-half weeks. It's a must. The pressure that comes with that is a good thing, because it's the kind of pressure that you like. It brings you to a higher level and we embrace it. We embraced it last year in the playoffs and it got us a ring."

Dirk Nowitzki
(On winning games) "I mean, we talked about it last week and out playoffs started a little bit early. We’ve gotta win some games. It might not be pretty right now and we might not be playing our best, but we’ve gotta find ways to win games."

(On the Warriors) "I think they made a great run in the second half, but we made enough shots, enough stops to get the win and that’s all that matters right now."

(On Kidd missing the Triple-double by a point) "If we'd have known, we would have gotten him one or two more shots. I thought he had a great look on that runner. But that’s what he does, he runs the show for us," Nowitzki said of Kidd’s engineering. "People most of the time leave him and he’s a great spot-up shooter, so he made some big shots again tonight. You know, he’s the head of the snake, and if we obviously want to play well in the playoffs or even make the playoffs here in the last seven games, we need him out there and directing everything, for sure."

(On the next Games) "Well, we have obviously a tough stretch here. We have four games in five nights, all on the road, and that’s never easy. You know, will take it one game at a time, so it was a good win for us tonight. Another one in Portland. The Rose Garden is a tough place to play, I don’t care who suits up for them."

Jason Kidd
(On missing the Playoffs, perhaps?) "It has never been in our minds that we won’t be in the postseason. That’s what we play the game for, to see if you can get in the postseason and see if you can get hot, lock in and see if you can win a championship. Right now, guys are getting better when we take the floor. You can see the ball movement and when we score 100 points we have a pretty good record."

(On not going for the Triple-double late) "At that point, I thought we needed to run clock."

Jason Terry
(On being worried about the Playoffs) "No worry at all. We're a team full of veteran guys that know what needs to be done. It definitely prepares you for the task ahead. We'd rather do this than be resting guys and you lose your rhythm. We tried that. Golden State did us nasty the last time we did that in 2007 when they lost in the first round. We learned from that.''

Shawn Marion
(On the remaining Games) "It's a race to the finish line. Every game counts here on out."

Brandan Wright
(On payback) "It really wasn’t about playing an old team or anything like that. It was about us getting off to a good start."

(On the Dubs almost coming back) "I think they like that style of play. When they get down, they’ve got a free will to shoot threes, shoot a lot of jumpshots, get a little active. They got within five, we got the timeout and we ran it back out to eight or 10. Then we were feeling pretty good about ourselves."

Warriors Coach Marc Jackson
(On Klay Thompson) "It was awfully impressive seeing him crashing the boards. With his size and athletic ability - I thought he started off battling, but it seemed like his feet were in quicksand. He did a great job of bouncing back and having an outstanding all-around game on defense, sharing the basketball and scoring the basketball. There is no question about his talent and his future."

(On The Second Half) "At halftime I was very disappointed with our effort. I believe seven games in ten days - physically I can understand we were drained, but there is no excuse. We, for some reason, in the first half were a step behind on every play defensively. You can just see sometimes as a coach and as a player...we couldn't fool ourselves. We got in at halftime, we talked about it and the way we played in the second half is what we expected in closing out the season. We battled, gave ourselves a chance - we had some breakdowns, but the energy and effort was certainly there."

(On The Play Of The Rookies) "Klay Thompson is obviously very advanced. He's the one that has played the most, been in the most battles and there is a reason why he was the number 11 pick. Charles Jenkins has come along as a proven guy that defends. He can run a show, can score and make plays. Jeremy Tyler, who's had the least amount of time, has shown some bright spots. I think overall tonight Jeremy Tyler had a tough time and Charles Jenkins had a tough time trying to keep Rodrigue Beaubois in front of him. Those guys have had some bright spots for us. I think this, overall, helps because it speeds up the process."

(On promising Playoffs before the Season) "If I had to do it all over again, I'd come in talking the same mess. I wouldn't have said it if I didn't believe it, but it also raised the bar for our expectations across the board. It'd be easy to come in and talk about a long process and needing a long time to get it right, but that's not what I signed up for. I'll take the criticism and the heat that comes with it, but I came in with a mind-set to change the culture. When you're changing the culture, there are going to be some tough spots. Obviously, it hasn't been the season that we wanted it to be, but we're excited about what the future holds."

(With Bogut and Curry back next Season, maybe another Playoff Promise right now?) "Growing and maturing. No comment."

Klay Thompson
(On the Game) "We gave up 112 points. That's too many. We gave up over 100 points in the last three games and that's inexcusable."

(On how to improve on D) "Play harder, have more focus, take pride in our defense, take pride when somebody scores on you and get offended. That's what we need to do. Doesn't mean we'll do it or that it might help at all, though. Have a nice Day."

(On grinding this late for nothing) "It's not difficult for me at all because I enjoy competing. We are all trying to get wins here. We just need to keep fighting - not getting blown out. We just have to keep working."

(On the Moral Victory) "It really bothers me. I don't even like moral victories."

"Rapid Reaction: Mavs 112, Warriors 103.
By Jeff Caplan | ESPNDallas.com.

"How it happened: Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle called a 20-second timeout less than two minutes into the game. The Golden State Warriors had a 4-0 lead and scored on a putback and fastbreak dunk.

If Carlisle had to remind his troops of the imperative nature of this first of four consecutive road games, then his message sunk in. The Mavs scored the next six points and were pretty much off and running against a Warriors team that traded Monta Ellis and is without injured guard Stephen Curry.

Oh, you weren't particularly thrilled that the Mavs' 19-point lead was whittled all the way down to 91-88 in the fourth quarter? Neither was Carlisle, who called for Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd to hop off the bench with 10:10 left to go in the game. Kidd had already played his 23 minutes and surely Carlisle was hoping Kidd could again take the entire fourth quarter off with a game at Portland on Friday night.

Kidd went to Nowitzki on consecutive possessions and the 7-footer, despite being just 6-of-16 from the floor at the time, drained a one-legged fallaway and then curled around his man and softly put in the finger roll to jump-start a 10-2 run and effectively put the game away.

The disappointing aspect for Carlisle is that he had to go with Nowitzki for nearly 37 minutes and Kidd logged 33. That's not the best way to start a back-to-back and four games in five nights.

Dallas got a big-time first half from former Warriors lottery pick Brandan Wright. He had 12 points and five assists in his first 11 minutes of the first half and finished with 16 points and nine boards. And Rodrigue Beaubois (11 points, five assists) had a nice first half as well, including a couple of highlight-reel plays with a swooping reverse layup and an alley-oop.

Kidd, in his second game back from a right groin strain, fell one point shy of his 108th career triple-double. He had nine points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Nowitzki finished with 27 points on 10-of-23 shooting and Shawn Marion collected double-digit rebounds (12 with seven points) for a fifth consecutive game.

The Mav's bench poured in 57 points ' as Jason Terry matched Wright's 16 points.

Last month, the Mavs lost to Sacramento and Golden State in consecutive games. This time around, they've taken care of both, averaging 111 points in the process.

What it means: The Mavs recorded consecutive victories for the first time since the two-game sweep of the Rockets on March 24 and 27 when Carlisle declared it the start of the playoffs. The win moves Dallas to 33-26 and gives the Mavs sole possession of the sixth seed, one-half game ahead of idle Denver and Houston, and 1 1/2 games behind fifth-seeded Memphis.

Bold play of the game: With 2:16 to go in the first half, Kidd lofted an alley-oop pass that Beaubois went high to grab and threw it down with flair, using the right hand from the left side of the bucket for a 58-41 lead.

Stat of the game: The Mavs didn't commit their first turnover until the 5:13 mark of the second quarter and had just three in the first half."

Notebook: Mavericks 112, Warriors 103.
Posted By Geoff Lepper, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS:
Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 points as the Dallas Mavericks blew almost all of a 19-point lead but held on for a 112-103 win against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night.

Four other Mavericks -- all reserves -- reached double figures, led by Brandan Wright, who lit up his first NBA team for 16 points and nine rebounds. Dallas (33-26) moved a half-game ahead of Houston and Denver and into sole possession of the No. 6 spot in the Western Conference standings. Even better for the Mavericks: They're now just 1 1/2 games behind Memphis, which sits fifth.

David Lee had 30 points with eight rebounds but committed five of Golden State's 16 turnovers. Rookie guard Klay Thompson contributed 24 points with new career highs in assists (eight) and rebounds (seven).

QUOTABLE:
"We've been talking about playoff mode for two-and-a-half weeks. It's a must. The pressure that comes with that is a good thing, because it's the kind of pressure that you like. It brings you to a higher level and we embrace it. We embraced it last year in the playoffs and it got us a ring."-- Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle

THE STAT:
Carlisle talked before the game about the need to avoid "catastrophic" turnovers, but that memo didn't get passed along to Golden State. Dallas held a 24-13 advantage in points off of turnovers, and 21-13 in fast-break points.

TURNING POINT:
Despite leading by 18 midway through the third quarter, the Mavericks gave up almost all of that advantage to a surging Warriors second unit trying to rebound from a first-half mauling. But though Golden State closed to within three points early in the fourth quarter, Thompson misfired on a couple of 3-point looks, and the Warriors never again had a shot at tying the score.

HOT:
Wright and Rodrigue Beaubois were the stars of Dallas' 23-8 run bridging the first and second quarters, which staked the Mavericks to their early lead. Wright and Beaubois combined for 15 points during that run; for the evening, they had 27 as the Mavericks' bench outscored Golden State's reserves 57-33. Golden State's backups came in averaging 50.7 points per game over their last three contests.

QUOTABLE II: "Wright was terrific all night. It was the kind of game where, if a team's playing small, he's a valuable guy because he can be a presence at the rim and guard perimeter guys, too, if needed."-- Rick Carlisle

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT:
Jason Kidd was all over the box score, especially in the fourth quarter when he doled out six assists and collected four rebounds. All told, he fell just one point short of his 108th career triple double: 12 assists, 10 boards, nine points and three steals.

QUOTABLE III:
"Never underestimate greatness. I don't care if that guy's 29, 39 or 49 (years old). He's going to do something to help you win."-- Rick Carlisle on Kidd

INSIDE THE ARENA:
The Warriors staged their second annual "Bollywood Night," which included, among other things, Indian-themed routines and costumes for the club's dance squad and Indian foods at concession stands.

NOTABLE:
Jason Terry had 16 points, including a backbreaking jumper that pushed Dallas' lead to 10 points with 2:42 remaining.
. . . Mavericks forward Shawn Marion grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
. . . Nowitzki, on the other hand, was limited to just one board, his lowest total since Feb. 17, 2011 at Phoenix.
. . . Dallas is now 5-0 when they record at least 30 assists.

UP NEXT:
For the Warriors, Saturday @ L.A. Clippers.
For the Mavericks, Friday @ Portland, Sunday @ l.a.lakers."

Mavericks-Trail Blazers Preview.
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN.

"The Dallas Mavericks are catching a huge break in their pursuit of a playoff spot on this critical road trip.

The Mavericks have had plenty of trouble defending LaMarcus Aldridge over the last two seasons, but won't have to deal with the injured Portland Trail Blazers star in Friday night's matchup.

Portland (28-31) announced Thursday that Aldridge will have surgery on his right hip and miss the rest of the season. The first-time All-Star averaged 21.7 points and 8.0 rebounds this season while shooting a career-high 51.2 percent.

"I'm very disappointed," Aldridge said. "I feel we have a really good group of guys here. I feel we're starting to find a really good rhythm together. So it's definitely hard to do right now."

Not including playoffs, Aldridge is averaging 28.2 points against the Mavericks (33-26) over the last two seasons to lead all players, shooting 51.1 percent and averaging 10.0 rebounds in six meetings. Most recently, the Dallas native capped a 25-point, 12-rebound effort with the game-winning 17-footer at the overtime buzzer in last Friday's 99-97 road win over the Mavericks.

These teams also went past regulation in their first 2011-12 meeting Feb. 11, when Delonte West scored six of his 10 points in the second overtime in a 97-94 home win for Dallas.

The Mavericks are visiting Portland for the first time since Game 6 of last year's first-round playoff series, in which Dirk Nowitzki had 33 points and 11 rebounds as Dallas won 103-96 to eliminate the Trail Blazers.

Dallas moved into sixth place in the Western Conference standings by opening a four-game, five-day trip with Thursday's 112-103 victory at Golden State. Nowitzki scored 27 points and Jason Kidd barely missed a triple-double with 12 assists, 10 rebounds and nine points.

"It's the kind of pressure that you like," said coach Rick Carlisle about trying to reach the postseason. "It brings you to higher levels and we embrace it. We embraced it last year in the playoffs and it got us a ring."

The Mavs got 57 points Thursday from their reserves, with Jason Terry and Brandan Wright each scoring 16 as the team continues to adjust after parting ways with Lamar Odom earlier this week.

"It's going to take us some time but we feel we can compete with the best," Kidd said.

The Blazers are also entering off a victory over the lowly Warriors, 118-110 on Wednesday. Jamal Crawford scored a season-high 34 points and J.J. Hickson added 23 and 13 rebounds.

"I envisioned more nights like this when I first came here, but everything happens for a reason and better late than never," said Crawford, who joined Portland as a free agent before this season.

Hickson, inserted into the lineup for Aldridge, is averaging 22.3 points on 63.0 percent shooting and 11.7 rebounds in three starts since the Blazers signed him March 21.

Portland is 4 1/2 games out of the West's final playoff spot with seven games left."
