FINAL
DAL-18-24-20-27+16+6+10=121
UTA-22-21-28-18+16+6+12=123

Jazz outlast Nowitzki, Mavericks 123-121 in 3 OT.
By LYNN DeBRUIN.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)"Al Jefferson hasn't been close to the playoffs since his rookie season.
Seven years later, the Utah Jazz big man is doing everything he can to make sure he's not on the outside looking in again.
Jefferson scored 28 points and tied a career-high with 26 rebounds to fuel Monday night's 123-121 triple-overtime victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
"Right now we just got to win every game, no excuse," said Jefferson, who had 10 points in the extra periods. "This is a big test for us. We just got to see where our heart is and I know everybody in the locker room wants to make the playoffs. So we are going to fight and we are going to fight `til the end. That's all we can do."
Dallas was coming off an overtime loss Sunday to the Los Angeles Lakers, and Monday's felt just as bad. It was the Mavs' first triple-OT game since Dec. 29, 1989, against Portland, which they also lost.
"It's a disappointing loss," said the Mavs' Rick Carlisle, coaching his 800th career game. "We have to get ready for the next one. There's not a lot of time to belly ache. It was a phenomenal game, the competition was great but we came up short."
Monday's win halted Utah's seven-game losing streak against the Mavericks, but more importantly kept the Jazz in the postseason race.
Utah began the day 10th in the Western Conference but pulled one-half game behind Phoenix and Houston for the eighth and final spot with four games remaining.
The Jazz (32-30) hold the tiebreaker with the Rockets but not with the Suns, who they face again next week.
The loss dropped defending champion Dallas to seventh in the West, one-half game behind Denver.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 40 points against Utah for the second straight time. His 3-pointer forced the second overtime, but he couldn't convert late in the third extra period.
The Jazz forced overtime on Paul Millsap's put-back dunk with 2.2 seconds remaining in regulation.
"The good thing about the overtimes is we knew they were going to kind of run out of gas," Jefferson said. "They are an older team, they played yesterday. So we knew the shots were going to start falling a little short. I am surprised they lasted as long as they did."
The Jazz led by as many as 11 points early, and were up 87-83 with 46 seconds left in regulation before Vince Carter hit back-to-back 3s, including the second with 8.5 seconds left in regulation.
On Utah's final possession in regulation, Gordon Hayward drove the lane but missed, only to have Millsap fly in for thunderous put-back dunk.
Nowitzki's long 3 to win it at the buzzer in regulation came up short.
Utah led by four in the first overtime, only to see Nowitzki force the second extra period with a 3 with 3.9 seconds left.
Jefferson hit a jumper in the third overtime then blocked Ian Mahinmi's shot, setting up Millsap for a fast-break score and 115-113 lead.
Devin Harris hit a 3 and Jefferson's 6-foot running jumper after Nowitzki's missed 3 gave Utah a 120-115 lead with 1:08 remaining.
Delonte West sank a 3 with 56 seconds left to get Dallas back within two points.
Millsap made 1 of 2 free throws with 14.9 seconds left and Utah led 121-118.
Jason Terry and Nowitzki both missed 3s in the final 10 seconds. Terry finished with 27 points and four 3s.
Harris' free throws provided Utah's final points, before West hit a 3 that was too little too late.
"Big plays and big shots on both ends of the floor, the crowd was into it, so you couldn't ask for a better game," said Nowitzki, who added nine rebounds and six assists. "We had our chances. If we get one rebound at the end of regulation the game is over."
DeMarre Carroll instead would come up with two huge rebounds for the Jazz late in the third overtime.
Carroll was playing just two days after having a front tooth dislodged and suffering a mild concussion in a loss at Memphis.
He was cleared to play Monday morning, and finished with 15 points, four rebounds, six assists and a steal for the Jazz.
Hayward added 24 points for Utah and Harris had 23, with five 3s.
Like the last game played in Utah between the teams, this one got chippy, with the Mavericks whistled for three individual technical fouls.
West drew chants of "Throw Him Out" after he was called for a technical in the second quarter after fouling Hayward away from the ball then poking his index finger in the back of Hayward's head a few seconds later.
Nothing was more physical than the matchup between Nowitzki and Millsap, who bumped and battled the entire night.
"He's a tough player," said Nowitzki, who started 3 of 3 but found early foul trouble. "I always liked him. He can make plays off the dribble and can post up. He's an active defender. We always have good matchups. Just their whole team competes. I don't care who they throw out there."
Millsap finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
No matter how tight the Western Conference race, the Jazz know how hungry Jefferson is.
"He was huge," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "I mean 26 rebounds, the timely shots on the perimeter. They were double-teaming him as soon as he got it, had bodies on him all night to try to get him off the block. But he hung in there."

NOTES:
Mavericks PG Jason Kidd was making his 1,300th career start, and his 498th with Dallas.
... Terry tied the Clippers' Chauncey Billups for fourth place on the NBA's career 3-pointers list at 1,783.
... Jazz SF Josh Howard (knee surgery) and SG Raja Bell (knee) both worked out for about 15 minutes on the court during Monday's morning shootaround.
... Jazz backup PG Earl Watson will undergo surgery Tuesday in New York to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.
... NBA D-League call-up Blake Ahearn scored his first Jazz points on a 3-pointer with 11:43 left in the second quarter."

Notebook: Jazz 123, Mavericks 121.
Posted By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: Al Jefferson still envisions the Utah Jazz as a playoff team, so he went out and had a 20/20 night.

Jefferson had 28 points and 26 rebounds to lead the Jazz to a riveting 123-121 win over the Dallas Mavericks in triple overtime Monday night. Gordon Hayward had 24 points and Devin Harris had 23 as the Jazz closed in on a postseason berth. They're now only a half game behind Phoenix and Houston for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

Utah blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and had chances to win in the first and second overtime periods, but couldn't put the reigning champions away. The Jazz needed a put-back dunk from Paul Millsap with 2.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 89-89 just to send it into overtime.

Dirk Nowitzki rebounded from a subpar shooting effort Sunday to score 40 points. He had nine rebounds and six assists for the Mavericks, who were playing their fourth road game in five days. Jason Terry chipped in 27 points for Dallas.

THE STAT:
The last Jazz player to have a 25-point, 25-rebound game? Karl Malone? Nope. Carlos Boozer? Wrong again. Rich Kelley, who played for the Jazz back in their New Orleans days, had 27 points and 25 rebounds against the l.a. lakers in a 121-109 loss on Nov. 17, 1978.

QUOTABLE:
"It's now or never. We started tonight. We just got to see where our heart is at and I know everybody in the locker room wants to make the playoffs. So we are going to fight and we are going to fight 'til the end. That's all we can do."-- Jazz center Jefferson on his team needing to win to stay in the playoff race.

THE STAT II:
Nothing stood out quite like Jefferson's stat line. His 26 rebounds tied a career-high and was the most for a Jazz player since Millsap had 24 in a game in April of 2010. Jefferson nearly had a double-double by halftime with eight points and 10 rebounds. He played the most of any player in Monday's game, going 54:02 and he didn't wear down. He had four points apiece in the second and third overtime periods.

TURNING POINT:
The Jazz blew chances to win in the fourth quarter and each of the first two overtime periods before finally putting the Mavericks away. A 3-pointer by Harris and a jumper by Jefferson made it 120-115 with 1:08 left in the game. Millsap made a free throw and Harris sank two foul shots to make it 123-118 to finally pull it out for Utah. Delonte West hit a meaningless 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left for Dallas.

HOT:
Utah's DeMarre Carroll, making his fifth NBA start, caught fire in the third quarter. He scored 11 of his 15 points on 4-for-4 shooting and had three of his six assists in the third period. And that came after he had a root canal earlier in the day. Nowitzki, who shot 9-for-28 in an overtime loss against the lakers on Sunday, was 13-for-26 from the field. He seemingly got whatever shot he wanted against the Jazz, and scored 40 points against them for the second time this season.

NOT:
Vince Carter hit a couple 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that almost won the game for Dallas. But take those two bombs away and Carter shot 3-for-13, and he didn't score in any of the overtime periods.
Rookie Alec Burks only played 12 minutes and shot 0-for-6 during that time. The Jazz blew a 10-point lead by shooting 29.4 percent in the fourth quarter, making just five shots.

GOOD MOVE:
It was evident from the start that Nowitzki was getting the world champion treatment and he knew it. He was aggressive offensively, drew fouls and made his free throws. He shot 12-for-12 from the free-throw line.

BAD MOVE:
West may have been inspired by the recent release of "The Three Stooges" movie. After he fouled Hayward while the two were running up the court in the second quarter, he was whistled for a technical foul for sticking his finger in Hayward's ear. Larry, Moe and Curly would have been proud.

QUOTABLE II:
"It was a fun game to be a part of. Both teams left it all out there and competed at a high level. Big plays and big shots on both ends of the floor. The crowd was into it so you couldn't ask for a better game. We had our chances. If we get that rebound at the end of regulation the game is over."
-- Mavericks forward Nowitzki on what a great game it was while lamenting how failing to box out Millsap would have won the game for his team.

QUOTABLE III:
"He had some lint in his hair. I was just trying to get it out for him. I was giving him a wet willy. That's all. We are two warriors. We're out there battling on the battlefield. I forgot the NBA is a gentleman's game so we have to scrap and do it nicely."-- Mavericks guard West on his run-in with Hayward.

NOTABLE:
Dallas guard Rodrigue Beaubois was listed as a game-time decision and Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said he thought he'd play. But Beaubois was held out with a strained calf, missing his second straight game.
Utah snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Mavericks. Dallas hadn't played in a triple overtime game since 1989.
Jefferson, Millsap, Hayward, Harris, Nowitzki and Terry each played more than 50 minutes. Jason Kidd made his 1,300th career start.

Rockets-Mavericks Preview.
By KATE HEDLIN.

"Fatigue may be a concern for the Dallas Mavericks, who will play three games in the next four nights.

The slumping Houston Rockets have even bigger worries.

The Mavericks will try to avoid losing their third straight while the Rockets look to stop a four-game skid as the two playoff hopefuls face off Wednesday night at American Airlines Center.

With four games remaining, Dallas (34-28) is in seventh place in the Western Conference - 1 1/2 games ahead of Houston and Phoenix, which are tied for eighth, and two games up on 10th-place Utah.

The Mavericks have a tough final stretch of games, with three opponents in playoff contention - including road games against Chicago and Atlanta. However, they have won six in a row over the Rockets, including both meetings this season.

Dallas has made things a little harder on itself with back-to-back losses beyond regulation to the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah.

The Mavericks came back from a late 10-point deficit in regulation Monday against the Jazz, but fell 123-121 in triple overtime. Dirk Nowitzki scored 40 points, but none in the third overtime, missing three shots.

"The good thing about the overtimes is we knew they were going to kind of run out of gas," Utah's Al Jefferson said. "They are an older team, they played (Sunday). So we knew the shots were going to start falling a little short. I am surprised they lasted as long as they did."

The Mavericks came up short Monday after fading Sunday against the lakers, shooting 38.5 percent in the fourth quarter and overtime of a 112-108 defeat. Dallas has lost three overtime games this month by a combined eight points.

Frustration may be setting in. Delonte West earned a technical foul in the second quarter Monday after fouling Gordon Hayward away from the ball then poking his index finger in Hayward's ear.

"We are two warriors, out here battling," said West, who may be facing a fine. "I forgot the NBA is a gentleman's game."

The Rockets (32-29) are trying to stave off a late-season collapse as they head into their final five games.

Houston, which trailed by at least 16 points in each of the first three losses during its slide, was swept in a crucial home-and-home series with Denver, losing 105-102 at home Monday.

Goran Dragic and Chandler Parsons scored 21 points each, but Parsons missed a desperation 3-pointer in the final seconds. The Rockets have been in a shooting slump over the past week, connecting on 39.5 percent of their shots the last four games.

"The guys are hurting right now," coach Kevin McHale said. "We'll regroup and we've got to go to Dallas and find a way. ... We were sitting good a few games ago and now we're not sitting so good."

The offensive struggles also seem to be impacting the Rockets' defense, with the team giving up an average of 105.3 points during the losing streak.

Houston will try to regroup as it heads on the road for its next two, playing the first of two remaining games against lowly New Orleans on Thursday. The Rockets face Golden State and Miami this weekend.

"We need to win three or four games out of these last five to have a really good shot at it," forward Luis Scola said. "With five (wins) I think we're going to be in the playoffs. But right now we can't think that way. We've just got to try to think about getting one."

Rockets Vs. Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki Drops 21 In Fourth As Dallas Stuns Houston With Comeback.
By Steve von Horn.

"Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 Points on 4-6 FGs and 11-11 FTs in the fourth quarter as the Dallas Mavericks pulled off a 117-110 comeback win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night.

At this point, the phrase "losing streak" doesn't do the Houston Rockets justice. Anyone who just started watching Rockets this week might think they've been commissioned by North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Houston has mixed close losses with clear defeats along the way, and now it no longer control its playoff destiny. On Wednesday it had the game in hand heading into the fourth quarter, and then the grizzled playoff veterans on the Mavericks snatched it away like candy from a (post-season) baby. Dirk Nowitzki pumped in 21 of his game-high 35 points in the final period and Dallas seized a 117-110 win.

All five Rockets starters -- Chandler Parsons (12), Luis Scola (18), Marcus Camby (11), Courtney Lee (16) and Goran Dragic (20) -- scored in double figures, while Kyle Lowry (11) and Chase Budinger (14) chipped in to make it seven Houston players hitting that mark in total. Unfortunately, nearly all of that group front-loaded its effort into the first three periods. Dragic hit his first six shots and dished out all 10 of his assists before the fourth quarter, and Scola saved 12 of his 18 points for a third-quarter run that put the team up 84-78 heading into the penultimate period. Then the collapse came.

Some great analysis of what turned the contest in the fourth quarter comes from Rob Mahoney of The Two Man Game:
The strategic turn of the game came when the Mavericks -- who had been torched by Houston's perimeter shooting since the early stages of the first quarter -- began switching on every pick and roll. The Rockets immediately looked to exploit that fact by involving Brandan Wright (four points, five rebounds) in mandatory switches and then looking to exploit him off the bounce, but Wright did a fantastic job of getting down into a defensive stance and rebuffing dribble penetration. Similarly, Jason Kidd (12 points, 4-7 3FG, eight assists, one turnover) was as brilliant in denying the post as can be expected. ... Houston warily tried to attack what they initially perceived as created mismatches, only to fall back into a less aggressive offense and let Dallas switch without penalty.

A relentless cascade of big plays from Dirk simply overwhelmed the Rockets at the last.
The sheer weight of Nowitzki's fourth quarter effort speaks for itself:
Score ..Dirk Nowitzki's 4th Quarter (12 Min, 21 Points on 4-6 FGs and 11-11 FTs)
(Hou- Dal)
88-85 Dirk Nowitzki makes 25-foot three-point jumper (Vince Carter assists)
90-88 Dirk Nowitzki makes 24-foot three-point jumper (Jason Kidd assists)
94-101 Dirk Nowitzki makes driving layup (Jason Kidd assists)
94-102 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 1 of 1
98-103 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 1 of 2
98-104 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 2 of 2
100-108 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 1 of 2
100-109 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 2 of 2
103-110 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 1 of 2
103-111 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 2 of 2
107-113 Dirk Nowitzki makes layup (Jason Terry assists)
107-114 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 1 of 2
107-115 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 2 of 2
110-116 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 1 of 2
110-117 Dirk Nowitzki makes free throw 2 of 2

He was sparkling on spot ups, swift on drives and even sweetened it all with a back-door spin and cut around Dragic on a layup for his last field goal of the night. Sprinkle in smaller contributions from Jason Terry, Vince Carter and Jason Kidd -- which added up to 64.7 percent shooting, nine assists on 11 made baskets and just one turnover for the team -- and that's how the Mavs outscored the Rockets 39-26 in the final period to claim their victory.

Meanwhile, Luis Scola literally did nothing but commit fouls in his final six-minute stint, while Goran Dragic coughed up more turnovers (1) than he dished out assists (0) and the bench trio of Kyle Lowry, Patrick Patterson and Chase Budinger kept the game within "close, but not-good-enough" range, which is probably better than the "total meltdown" alternative as a matter of degree on the team's failure."

Dallas Mavericks close in on playoff berth with late magic.
Posted by Dwain Price.

DALLAS--"They gave their fans a little dose of some fourth-quarter magic Wednesday night at American Airlines Canter.
For that, the Dallas Mavericks need only one victory in their final three games after they rallied for a 117-110 triumph over the slumping Houston Rockets.
One more loss each for the Rockets (32-30) and Phoenix Suns (32-30), or a Dallas victory, will wrap up a playoff spot and put the Mavericks (35-28) in position to at least have the chance to successfully defend their NBA title.
"We understand things and we talked about it [Wednesday] morning,'' coach Rick Carlisle said. "This game was really pivotal in so many ways because it's a double court game on the whole magic number thing, and it effectively takes one team [Houston] out of it, which is big.
"We've got three more important games to go and they're all meaningful.''
The Mavs, who collected 39 points in the fourth quarter when they scored on 17 of their first 20 possessions, knew Wednesday's game was meaningful, also. Perhaps that's why when the money quarter rolled around, they rolled up their sleeves and started doing some serious damage.
Down 84-76 very late in the third period, the Mavs woke up in time to go on a 26-10 run and assume a 102-94 lead with 4:05 left. Most of the damage was done by Dirk Nowitzki, who tallied nine of his game-high 35 points in the run that inched the Mavs ever so close to the playoffs.
Jason Terry also played a pivotal role in the comeback, as did Jason Kidd and Vince Carter, who finished with 23 points.
"He just had a really strong disposition at both ends of the floor,'' Carlisle said of Carter. "Defensively, he was putting his body on people and he was rebounding.
"He's a tremendous all-around player. His passing ability is something that's frequently overlooked because he's a high flyer and scorer.''
Kidd's passing certainly wasn't overlooked. The 18-year veteran scored 12 points -- he was 4 of 7 from 3-point range --and also finished with eight assists while getting kudos from Delonte West for helping jump-start the comeback.
"He came in late in the third and he just got the ball to the right guys at the right time,'' West said. "And he hit big shot after big shot all game, and that's what it's about.
"And our scorers -- Vince and Dirk and Jet -- they put this team on their back.''
The game was tied 27-27 after the first period and 55-55 at the half before the Rockets started getting some separation in the third quarter when Luis Scola tallied 12 of his 18 points. But the Mavs showed they had plenty of fight left when the game was still there for the taking.
"It was definitely important to get this win tonight,'' center Brendan Haywood said. "Houston's a team that's fighting for one of those last playoff spots, so it was almost like a game that had a playoff-type atmosphere.
"It had playoff implications, so it was important that we got this one. Now we know that we're a couple of games away from locking this thing in and locking ourselves in the playoffs.''

Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki deal Rockets fifth straight loss,
Associated Press,
DALLAS--"Dirk Nowitzki should have been tired after playing 96 minutes in consecutive overtime losses.

Instead, Nowitzki was at his best late when the Dallas Mavericks needed him most.

"The first half I was a step slow. Then I got going. The guys kept us in it," Nowitzki said. "The second half, guys were looking for me. I got some good looks and got into the game."

Nowitzki scored 31 of his 35 points in the second half, and 21 in the fourth quarter Wednesday night when the Mavericks rallied for a 117-110 victory over the Houston Rockets, whose playoff hopes took another blow with their fifth consecutive loss.

Jason Terry put Dallas ahead to stay with a 3-pointer that made it 93-92 with 7:37 left.

By the time Nowitzki completed a three-point play 3 1/2 minutes later, the Mavs led 102-94. That wrapped up a 20-6 go-ahead run their 11-time All-Star forward started with consecutive 3-pointers. Then he made 10 free throws in a row over the final 2 1/2 minutes of the game.

"Dirk put the team on his back," Delonte West said. "It's not how you start, it's how you finish. Dirk was a prime example of that."

Two nights after playing 53 minutes and scoring 40 points in a triple-overtime loss at Utah, Nowitzki was only 2-of-7 shooting with four points in the first half against the Rockets. He made eight of 11 shots after that.

Houston matched its longest losing streak of the season, and slipped to ninth place in the Western Conference with Phoenix, a half-game behind Utah for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with four games left.

"We could use some help," Chandler Parsons said. "We have to stay together, we can't get our heads down. As crazy as it sounds, it's not over yet."

Vince Carter added 23 points and Terry 19 for the defending NBA champion Mavericks, who can clinch a playoff berth with a win over Golden State in their regular-season home finale Friday night.

"This game was really pivotal in so many ways because it's a double-count game on the whole magic number thing, and it effectively takes one team out of it, which is big," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said.

Goran Dragic had 20 points to lead seven Rockets in double-figure scoring. Dragic also had 10 assists, and Marcus Camby had a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds after missing the previous game because of his back. Luis Scola had 18 points for Houston, Courtney Lee 16, Chase Budinger 14, and Parsons 12.

Jason Kidd has 12 points on four 3s for Dallas while West had 11 points after finding out earlier Wednesday he had been fined $25,000 by the NBA for jabbing his finger in the ear of Utah swingman Gordon Haywood in Monday night's game.

Houston was up 71-62, its largest lead, when Scola made a short bank shot midway through the third quarter to wrap up an 11-0 run.

The Rockets still led by eight after Scola made two free throws in the closing seconds of the third. But when Carter missed a 3-pointer, Brandan Wright grabbed the rebound and beat the buzzer with a 10-foot jumper.

Budinger's pull-up jumper with 10 minutes remaining had Houston up 88-82 before Nowitzki hit the first of his consecutive 3s.

"Dirk got on fire and got to the line a lot in the fourth," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "They executed better than we did in the fourth and we couldn't get stops."

After Terry's go-ahead 3, Carter followed with a 3 of his own at the 7-minute mark.

Soon after that Terry was fouled and went hard to the ground while driving for a dunk attempt. After staying down for several minutes and Carlisle calling timeout, Terry got up and walked away smiling and urging the crowd they get loud.

After the Friday home finale, the Mavericks close the regular season at Chicago and Atlanta.

Houston, trying to get back into the last playoff spot, plays at New Orleans on Thursday. The Rockets have home games left against Golden State and the Hornets with a trip to Miami in between.

Phoenix lost to Oklahoma City later Wednesday night, but owns the tiebreaker against Houston since the Suns won two of three this season, including a 112-105 victory at Houston last Friday. Utah beat Portland to move into eighth place.

"We still believe in our chances," Dragic said. "Ten days ago, we were really confident, but we've been playing bad. Four games left, win those, we have a chance."

Game notes
Kidd made three 3s in a 90-second span late in the first half before Scola made two free throws for a 55-all halftime tie.
... The game was tied 27-all after the first quarter, when Carter scored the last 10 Mavericks points including consecutive slam dunks in a 20-second span.
... Terry broke a tie with Chauncey Billups (1,783) for No. 4 on the NBA career 3-pointers list with his first one Wednesday night. He had three pushing his total to 1,786. At No. 3 on the list is Kidd, who has 1,874 after his latest four."

Notebook: Mavericks 117, Rockets 110.
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.

"THE FACTS: Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday, rallying the Dallas Mavericks to a 117-110 victory against the reeling Houston Rockets at the American Airlines Center. Dallas (35-28) completed a three-game sweep of the season series and handed Houston (32-30) its fifth consecutive loss.

Vince Carter scored a season-high 23 points, Jason Terry added 19 and Jason Kidd tallied 12 points and eight assists for the defending champions, who can clinch a return to the playoffs with a victory at home Friday against Golden State. Seven players scored in double figures for the Rockets, led by Goran Dragic with 20 points and 10 assists, Luis Scola with 18 points and Marcus Camby with 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

QUOTABLE:
"We really needed the win and our guys weren't going to let it go."-- Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle.

THE STAT:
All four of Kidd's made baskets were from 3-point range (4-for-7). So far this season, 79 of his 99 field goals have come from behind the arc.

TURNING POINT:
Entering the game, Dallas was 3-24 when trailing after three quarters and Houston was 27-4 when it held the lead going into the fourth. This time, however, the Mavericks showed the finishing form that carried them to the title last season. They overwhelmed Houston with 39 points on 65 percent shooting (11-for-17) in the fourth quarter.

QUOTABLE II:
"It's tough now. We basically have to win out. We do have to win out.
... Now it's to the point where we are going to need some help. We've got handle our business first, though.
... We have to stay together. We can't start hanging our heads now, because as crazy as it sounds, it's not over yet."-- Rockets forward Chandler Parsons.

HOT:
Streaky shooting was contagious for Dallas. In addition to Nowitzki's 21-point fourth period, Carter scored the Mavericks' final 10 points of the first quarter, Terry scored 12 of their first 14 in the second quarter and Kidd drained three consecutive 3-pointers to close out the first half.

NOT:
After winning four straight games -- all on the road -- from April 2-9, the Rockets have dropped five in a row while allowing an average of 107.6 points per game. Houston is in a dogfight for the final playoff spot in the West with Phoenix and Utah.

GOOD MOVE:
Carter capped another vintage "Vinsanity" performance with an emphatic, two-handed putback slam with 5:31 remaining.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT:
Nowitzki scored 31 in the second half, three shy of his own franchise record for a half set against Utah on Nov. 3, 2009. His back-to-back 3-pointers sparked a decisive 20-6 run in the fourth and he finished 10-for-18 from the field and 12-for-12 from the line (11-for-11 in the fourth quarter). It was his eighth 30-point game of the season.

INSIDE THE ARENA:
Technical difficulties with the sound system delayed the start of the game for several minutes. There was another audio outage during the second quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH:
Parsons scored 12 points on 4-for-13 shooting and added four rebounds and four assists.

NOTABLE:
Dallas guard Delonte West was fined $25,000 by the NBA for poking Utah forward Gordon Hayward in the ear Monday night.
... Terry drained his 1,784th career 3-pointer at the 11:22 mark of the second quarter, passing Chauncey Billups for fourth place on the NBA's all-time list.
... The Mavericks have had at least five players score in double figures in eight straight games.
... Carter needs one 3-pointer to reach 1,500 for his career.
... There were eight ties and 14 lead changes."

Warriors-Mavericks Preview.
By JEFF BARTL.

"The Dallas Mavericks need one victory to clinch a playoff berth. A home matchup with the injury depleted Golden State Warriors appears to provide the perfect opportunity.

The defending champions look to secure a return to the postseason and send Golden State to its season-high seventh straight loss Friday night at the American Airlines Center.

The Mavericks (35-28) snapped a two-game skid with a 117-110 win over Houston on Wednesday, moving them into sixth place in the Western Conference, one-half game ahead of Denver.

Dirk Nowitzki got off to a slow start, then scored 21 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter to help Dallas pull away.

"We really needed the win and our guys weren't going to let it go," coach Rick Carlisle told the team's official website.

Nowitzki has averaged 30.0 points over his last five games.

"Dirk put the team on his back," guard Delonte West said. "It's not how you start, it's how you finish. Dirk was a prime example of that."

The Mavericks would certainly like to get their ticket to the playoffs punched Friday, as they close the regular season with road games against playoff teams Chicago and Atlanta.

Nowitzki's hot stretch started with a 27-point effort in a 112-103 win at Golden State last Thursday, when the Mavericks' bench outscored the Warriors' 57-33.

David Lee had a game-high 30 points for Golden State in that contest, but he hasn't played since and has been shut down for the season with a strained groin.

The Warriors (22-39) have been without Stephen Curry since he sprained his right ankle March 11, and they were missing Andris Biedrins and Nate Robinson in a 99-87 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday.

Golden State has dropped six straight and 13 of 15.

"Some would perceive these to be dark days," coach Mark Jackson said. "I believe these are times to build character and hold on to the rope even tighter."

Klay Thompson scored a team-high 17 points Wednesday and had 24 in the last meeting with Dallas. He's averaging 18.3 points while starting the last 23 games since Curry's injury, often being guarded by the opposition's top defender.

"It's great experience, being doubled, grabbed and getting beaten up," Jackson said. "The great ones ... it's a complement. I think its valuable experience for him."

Including Thompson, the Warriors started four rookies Wednesday and will be looking at a similar lineup Friday. Jackson guaranteed a playoff appearance before the season began, but the rash of injuries has contributed to Golden State's problems.

A much different-looking Warriors team beat the Mavericks 111-87 on March 10, as Thompson scored 13 points off the bench, but Golden State hasn't had much luck on the road in this series of late. Dallas has won nine of the last 10 home meetings, including postseason."

UP NEXT:
For the Mavericks, Saturday vs. Bulls.

http://www.nba.com/g...I/gameinfo.html

Mavericks-Bulls Preview.
By JEFF MEZYDLO.
"The final stretch of the regular season has not gone as smoothly as the Chicago Bulls had wanted.

Hoping to bounce back from their latest defeat without injured star Derrick Rose, the Bulls try to maintain their grasp on the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference with a third consecutive win over the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night.

Chicago's hold on the top seed and home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs got a little looser with an 83-72 loss at Miami on Thursday to split the four-game season series between the teams.

The Bulls (47-16) have a 1 1/2-game lead over the Heat in the East, one in the loss column. Chicago has three games remaining, while Miami has four.

"Got to win, got to win," said Bulls guard Richard Hamilton, who was held to six points on 1-of-6 shooting Thursday after scoring 22 in each of the previous two contests. "Just take one game at a time. We have Dallas coming up and we have to figure out a way to win that game."

The Bulls likely must try to get that done without Rose for a fourth consecutive game because of a foot injury. Chicago is 17-9 without him during his injury-plagued season, including 3-4 in April.

There is a possibility that Rose, averaging 22.5 points and 7.9 assists, could return for Wednesday's game at Indiana.

"You deal with it like you deal with it all year," coach Tom Thibodeau said.

Third-string point guard John Lucas had a team-high 16 points Thursday as the Bulls shot 35.7 percent and were physically pushed around while scoring their fewest points of the season.

"This game will reveal certain things to us, things that need to be corrected, continue to strive for improvement, and we're not going to get caught up in (leads of) 1 1/2 games, 2 1/2 games or whatever," Thibodeau said. "Just keep doing the things we need to do to win, that's all we're focusing on.

"We get ready for Dallas."

Chicago beat the reigning NBA champs 82-77 at home in the most recent meeting Jan. 20, 2011. Playing without Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah, the Bulls got 26 points, nine assists and seven rebounds from Rose - the only Chicago player to score in double figures.

While Chicago looks to avoid dropping consecutive home games for the first time since a five-game skid March 1-19, 2010, the Mavericks (36-28) hope to avoid a third straight road defeat.

Dallas is coming off a pair of home victories after beating Golden State 104-94 on Friday. With two games remaining, the Mavericks are trying to hang on to the sixth seed in the West.

"We're playing as a cohesive unit out there," said guard Delonte West, who had 16 points against the Warriors.

Dirk Nowitzki averaged 30.0 points in the previous five games before scoring 16 on Friday in the Mavericks' home finale. He's averaged 30.4 points in his last five against the Bulls but finished with 19 on 6-of-16 shooting at Chicago last season."
