<span style="color: #ff0000">Notebook</span>: Thunder 95, <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">79</span>.<br />
By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.<br />
<br />
"<span style="color: #ff0000">THE FACTS</span>: After a couple of near-misses in Oklahoma City, the Dallas Mavericks returned home and missed nearly everything in Game 3. Kevin Durant and the Thunder shoved the defending champs to the brink of elimination Thursday, seizing a 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven first-round series with a lopsided 95-79 victory at the American Airlines Center.<br />
<br />
Durant scored 21 of his 31 points in the first half, Russell Westbrook had 20 and Serge Ibaka added 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. James Harden and Derek Fisher each scored 10 points off the bench. An efficient Oklahoma City offense turned the ball over just eight times and an aggressive Thunder defense registered 11 steals and seven blocks.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">committed 16 turnovers and shot just 34 percent </span>from the field. <span style="color: #004000">Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks with 17 points. Jason Kidd (12) and Jason Terry (11) </span>were the only other players in double figures. The series resumes Saturday with Game 4 in Dallas. No team in NBA history has ever come back from an 0-3 deficit. The Mavericks have never been swept in a postseason series.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE</span>:<br />
"Defensively we did probably as well as we could possibly do against a very good offensive team that really moves the basketball very well."-- Oklahoma City head coach Scott Brooks.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">THE STAT</span>:<br />
Oklahoma City shot 43 percent (12-for-28) from 3-point range, compared to 32 percent (7-for-22) by Dallas. Leading the long-distance barrage for the Thunder were Durant (4-for-6), Daequan Cook (3-for-6), Fisher (2-for-4) and Westbrook (2-for-5).<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">TURNING POINT</span>:<br />
The older Mavericks expended a ton of energy coming back from a 15-point hole in the first quarter and another 15-point deficit in the second quarter, but they were out of gas and out of answers when Oklahoma City used a 16-5 run in the third quarter to expand its lead to 66-50. Westbrook scored nine of his 11 third-quarter points during that surge.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE II</span>:<br />
"Our goal was to come out swinging, create energy and get the building going. ... It wasn't the way we wanted to start the game. Give them credit. They threw a heck of a game at us. ... We picked a bad time to put a stinker out there."-- <span style="color: #004000">Nowitzki</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">HOT</span>:<br />
After shooting 15-for-44 from the field in the first two games, Durant was 11-for-15 in Game 3. The three-time NBA scoring champion was particularly sharp from the perimeter, swishing fadeaways and pull-up jumpers from 15-25 feet practically whenever he wanted.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">NOT</span>:<br />
The <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks</span> were 4-for-16 in the second quarter and 4-for-18 in the third, finishing that frigid and forgettable 24-minute stretch with more turnovers (10) than field goals (eight).<br />
... <span style="color: #004000">Shawn Marion</span> had a team-high 10 rebounds, but <span style="color: #ff0000">missed his first seven shots and finished 1-for-</span>8.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">GOOD MOVE</span>:<br />
Oklahoma City did a commendable job of keeping the ball out of Nowitzki's hands and limiting his offensive impact. His dunk at the 9:01 mark of the fourth quarter was his first bucket since there was 2:01 remaining in the first half, a field-goal drought of 17 minutes on the game clock.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">BAD MOVE</span>:<br />
Terry foolishly attempted to sneak a layup past Ibaka's reach with 8:14 remaining in the second quarter. The runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year swatted it harder than anything hit by Albert Pujols this season, about 10 rows deep.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">INSIDE THE ARENA</span>:<br />
Fans at the sold-out American Airlines Center arrived to find blue Mavericks T-Shirts draped over their seats, emblazoned with the battle cry "All In."<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">NOTABLE</span>:<br />
The <span style="color: #004000">Mavs</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">got whistled for four technical fouls</span> in the game: <span style="color: #004000">Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle, Nowitzki, Delonte West and Brian Cardinal</span>.<br />
... <span style="color: #004000">Starting center Brendan Haywood</span> was glued to the bench for the entire second half for Dallas.<br />
... <span style="color: #004000">Dallas</span> is <span style="color: #ff0000">15-16</span> (.<span style="color: #ff0000">483</span>) all time in elimination games.<br />
... Durant and Westbrook have each scored 20-plus points in all three games of the series.</span></div>

"HANG TIME PLAYOFF HEADQUARTERS – Don’t let the designer Poindexter glasses fool you. Thunder stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook see just fine.
They can see through the playoff matrix already, just three trips into the postseason in their young careers.
Clearly, the Thunder do not plan on waiting their turn. They also won’t be deferring to their elders, as their 95-79 Game 3 destruction of the defending champion Mavericks Thursday night at American Airlines Center serves as proof.
Durant’s shooting touch came back — he had 15 points 12 minutes in — was 8-for-10 and had 21 points by halftime and finished with a game-high 31 points. Westbrook did as he pleased and the Mavericks still do not have anyone on the roster capable of shutting him down. And the Thunder, from Kendrick Perkins, Serge Ibaka and Nick Collison up front to James Harden, Derek Fisher and Thabo Sefolosha in the backcourt, are proving that they are the deeper, stronger, more resilient and a just plain better team.
“We wanted to focus on being solid, keeping it simple, hit singles and not home runs and I thought we did that,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “That’s important, because sometimes we get a little excited. And that’s good, because they are very excitable. But when we talk about playing our basketball and improving everyday, we have to think simple. Sometimes it’s challenging to coach simple with our guys but it’s important to focus on that.”
A 3-0 hole in a playoff series is the ticket for any team to get off the postseason ride, even the defending champs. The Mavericks know this better than anyone, having handed the same ticket to the Lakers last year in the Western Conference semifinals.
Now here they are, 48 minutes away from the same fate.
“We’ve got to fight,” Mavericks swingman Shawn Marion said. “We’ve got to go out swinging. That’s what it’s about. It’s about going out there and seeing what’s inside of you. Gotta dig deep inside of us and go out there and get it. We’ve got to all look at each other in the eyes and in the face and go out there and challenge each other.”
All that’s left for the Mavericks is to show they have the resolve of a champion who will cede their position to the Thunder or some other Western Conference team (like the Spurs or lakers) capable of handling the rigors of the postseason road Dallas owned last season. If they don’t want to become the first defending champ to be dismissed in the first round since the Miami Heat in 2007, they have to come up with a better showing Saturday night in Game 4.
After two close games to start this series, plenty of folks believed the Mavericks might have had another run in them. But that feeling was washed away by that early-and-sustained blitz from the Thunder. They simply overwhelmed the Mavericks, with Durant leading the way. The three-time scoring champ bounced back from his shooting struggles in the first two games (15-for-44) and owned Game 3.
“Look, he’s a great player,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. “He’s the best scorer on the planet. And Marion did a phenomenal job for two games, and tonight Durant picked his level up a little bit and he was making some of those contested shots. What was he, 11-of-15? I mean that’s a phenomenal shooting night in a game that their spreading the ball around quite a bit.”
If not for that late 10-0 run by the Mavericks’ reserves, the Thunder would have won by 26 instead of 16.
“You’ve got to take your hat off to them,” Mavericks guard Jason Terry said. “They came out and played a hell of a game tonight, kicked our **** in every facet of the game.”

Harden huge as Thunder sweep Mavs.
CBSSports.com wire reports.
DALLAS--"Oklahoma City kept picking and rolling, and James Harden kept making plays.
Instead of giving in and being content going home for a Game 5, the Thunder now are waiting for their next series. Oklahoma City rallied for a 103-97 victory Saturday night to complete a first-round series sweep of the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks
Harden scored 15 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, including seven in a row and nine in the Thunder's 12-0 run after they trailed by 13 points with 9:44 left.
"I got into attack mode," Harden said. "I was determined to make plays."
After the Harden-fueled surge over 3 minutes got the Thunder within a point, they finally took the lead -- and kept it -- when Russell Westbrook stole the ball from Dirk Nowitzki and passed to Serge Ibaka for a two-handed slam that made it 92-91 with 5:17 left.
"He beat us in individual drives, beat us in pick and rolls. He got up a head of steam and was great," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said of Harden. "We tried everything, five or six different coverages going. We needed to be better but it was more about how good he was."
Dallas is the second defending champion in five years to be swept in the first round. After beating the Mavericks in the 2006 NBA Finals, Miami lost in four games to Chicago the next year.
Kevin Durant had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Thunder, who will play the winner of the series between the los angeles lakers and Denver. The lakers lead that first-round series 2-1 going into Game 4 on Sunday night in Denver.
"This goes without saying, I'm excited we won the series," coach Scott Brooks said. "James had an incredible game. We ran pick and rolls at the angles. ... He was making plays for himself or our shooters."
Even when Harden bobbled the ball in the fourth quarter after Oklahoma City took the lead, Derek Fisher ended up with it and drove for a layup to make it 96-91. Nowitzki then had a shot that hit the rim a couple of times before falling out.
Nowitzki had 34 points, including all six of his free throws after that. But he also missed a couple of shots in that span, all that were close but not good.
With their 20-something All-Star duo of Durant and Westbrook along with the late-season addition of Fisher, who won five NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Thunder got the franchise's first four-game playoff sweep since 1996.
That's when they were still the Seattle SuperSonics and swept the Houston Rockets in a second-round series.
"If you want to be an elite team in this league, you got to have two or three guys who can go off at any time and I just thought they had more weapons than us," Nowitzki said.
Oklahoma City finished off the Mavs without starting center Kendrick Perkins, who left the game with 4:09 left in the first quarter with a right hip strain. He had two rebounds, two assists and missed his only shot in his 8 minutes.
Jason Kidd, the Mavericks' 39-year-old point guard, had 16 points and eight assists. Jason Terry had 11 points in what might have also been his last game in Dallas.
Westbrook and Fisher had 12 points each for the Thunder.
Dallas led 86-73 on a 3-pointer by Terry before Harden scored seven in a row - on a three-point play and two other baskets. Durant then made a 3-pointer, and after Nowitzki was short on a 14-footer, Harden drove for a powerful two-handed slam that got the Thunder within 86-85.
The game was tied at halftime before Nowitzki had 12 points and Kidd made three 3-pointers in the third quarter, when the Mavs scored 34 points to take an 81-68 lead.
Dallas had never been swept in a best-of-seven series. And the Mavericks hadn't lost four playoff games in a row since the 2006 NBA Finals against the Heat, when they took a 2-0 series lead before losing the rest.
Now they are the oldest team in the NBA, and vastly changed from last year's championship squad.
Still, the Mavs looked like they were ready after halftime to at least force the series back to Oklahoma City, where they opened the series with two losses by a combined four points before losing by 16 at home in Game 3 on Thursday night.
Nowitzki drove around Ibaka for a tiebreaking one-handed reverse layup less than a minute into the second half, and the lead was up to 64-54 when Shawn Marion had a slam dunk.
The closest the Thunder got the rest of the third quarter was six points, but Kidd stretched that back out with another 3-pointer.
Carlisle had talked during the off day about the Mavericks controlling their emotions after his outburst in the first quarter of Game 3. He had to be held back by an assistant coach when he charged onto the court and was pointing and screaming at an official because of what he said were three missed calls on one possession, ending with Oklahoma City scoring on what appeared to be basket interference.
Before the end of the first quarter Saturday night, Carlisle was mad again -- and for good reason.
Kidd had bad pass that went out of bounds, but officials missed that the ball was deflected in the air by Harden. Replays showed clearly that Carlisle had a gripe and that the loud boos were warranted.
Fisher then made it worse by hitting a 22-foot jumper when play resumed. But Vince Carter made a 3-pointer to get the Mavs within 26-24 before drawing a charge from Harden near midcourt.
Notes
•This was Dallas' 23rd best-of-7 playoff series. The only time the Mavericks had ever been swept in the postseason was in the a first-round series in 1990 when they lost a best-of-5 against Portland.
•Ibaka fouled out with 2:14 left.
•Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who won three Super Bowls for the Cowboys, sat in a front-row seat near midcourt. "

Dallas Mavericks' best not enough.
The defending champs fought hard but couldn't overcome Thunder's rising trio.
By Jean-Jacques Taylor | ESPNDallas.com.
"The Dallas Mavericks played as hard as they could Saturday night to avoid the indignity of getting swept out of the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
They scrambled. They fought. They even built a 13-point fourth-quarter lead in Game 4 -- and it still wasn't enough.
The Mavs were dismissed from the playoffs without winning a game for the first time in franchise history -- 329 days after winning the franchise's first title.
Dirk Nowitzki scored a game-high 34 points in Game 4, but he was the only Maverick to consistently score throughout the series.
Ironic, isn't it?
Oklahoma City 103, Dallas 97.
Just so you know, moral victories don't exist for teams defending titles -- nor should they.
The Mavs hold themselves to a high standard, as they should, which is why there's no way to avoid using the word embarrassment when discussing their playoff performance.
They whined about the officiating too much. They consistently fell apart at winning time. And they didn't have anyone other than Dirk Nowitzki capable of consistently scoring.
So we're reduced to talking about their effort, which was supreme in Game 4.
During the third quarter -- their best of the series -- the Mavs seemed determined to make at least one more hour-long flight to Oklahoma City. They outscored the Thunder 34-21 and led by 13 entering the fourth quarter.
Nowitzki had already scored 25, Jason Kidd and Ian Mahinmi were also in double figures and Oklahoma City center Kendrick Perkins hadn't played since the first quarter because of a strained right hip.
Jason Terry, harassed much of the series, drilled a 3-pointer from the wing, pushing the Mavs' lead to 86-73 with 9:44 left.
Then the Mavs collapsed. Once again.
Or James Harden took over.
It probably depends on your perspective. Less than four minutes later, the score was tied at 88-88.
At that point, we all knew Oklahoma City was going to win.
Three games in this series were decided in the game's final three minutes. The Mavs lost each one.
In the regular season, three of their four games against Oklahoma City were decided in the final two minutes. The Mavs lost each one.
Oklahoma City has beaten the Mavs six consecutive times and seven of eight this season.
This series wasn't about a blown call here or there. Or a lucky shot by Kevin Durant. Or the basketball gods.
It was about a team with three young stars -- Durant, Russell Westbrook and Harden -- learning how to win after obsessing over their 4-1 series loss to the eventual champions last season.
And it was about an aging Mavs' team with eight players in their 30s fading when it mattered most because keeping up with the youngsters for three quarters required so much energy and concentration.
"We left it all on the floor," Dirk said. "If we had come back here 1-1, we would've had a chance, but we had two heartbreaking losses and then we picked a bad time to have one of our worst games of the season."
Oklahoma City is younger, faster, quicker and better than the Mavs. You could make the argument pretty easily that Dirk is the only player who could start for the Thunder.
Nowitzki and Terry were the only Mavs to score 20 points in this series. Dirk had two 30-point games and another with 25. Terry scored 20 in Game 1.
Terry, the Mavs' second-best offensive player, scored 18 points and made 8 of 9 shots in the first half of Game 1. In the last 3.5 games, he totaled just 37 points and made only 12 of 35 shots.
Westbrook shut him down by either denying him the ball or preventing him from getting to his sweet spots on the floor. And when the Mavs set screen after screen for Jet, Westbrook fought through each of them.
He made Jet a nonfactor, something LeBron James failed to do in the NBA Finals last season.
The Thunder won because they have multiple offensive weapons. Four different players scored at least 20 points in a game.
Westbrook scored a game-high 28 in Game 1 and had 29 in Game 2, Durant had a game-high 31 in Game 3 and Harden had a team-high 29 in Game 4. Their top three offensive players combined for eight games of 20 points or more -- not including Serge Ibaka's 22-point performance in Game 1.
And they do it different ways.
Westbrook is a speedster who gets into the lane anytime he wants. Durant hangs around the perimeter and Harden excels at the pick-and-roll. Each regularly gets to the free throw line, making them efficient scorers for the most part.
"We need guys who can make plays for themselves," Nowitzki said. "The elite teams have two or three guys to go to offensively. They had more weapons than us."
It showed in the fourth quarter, when the Mavs routinely collapsed and the Thunder thrived.
The Mavs' reign is over. It was fun while it lasted."

..The Dallas Mavericks? Gone Till November.
..By Dan Devine.
"Jason Terry may have broken every broom in the house, but when Game 4 was on the line, James Harden broke the Dallas Mavericks.
Time and again in the final 12 minutes, Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Scott Brooks turned to Harden, his team's most gifted facilitator, to orchestrate offense and bring the West's No. 2 seed back against a defending NBA champion fighting to stave off elimination. And time and again, the 22-year-old lefty delivered.
Harden had a hand in creating 24 of the Thunder's 35 fourth-quarter points — scoring 15 points of his own (6-of-9 from the floor, 3-of-3 from the line) and assisting on a pair of 3-pointers by Kevin Durant, as well as one by Daequan Cook — to bring Oklahoma City roaring back from an 81-71 deficit at the start of the fourth and lead them to a 103-97 win on the road in Game 4 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series.
The presumptive Sixth Man of the Year finished with 29 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in 34 1/2 minutes off the bench for the Thunder, who closed out a four-game sweep of the Mavericks and will move on to face the winner of the opening-round matchup between the third-seeded Los Angeles Lakers and the sixth-seeded Denver Nuggets. L.A. leads that series two games to one, with Game 4 set for Sunday night in Denver.
The Mavericks will not move on. They will go home, and we will not see them again until the NFL is running things. Last year, Dallas was the last team standing; this year, Dallas is the first team to exit the postseason. What a difference a year makes.
Some Mavericks — certainly centerpiece Dirk Nowitzki, and presumably valued defender Shawn Marion, who is slated to make $17.5 million through 2013-14, according to ShamSports.com's salary database — will go home, take some time off and begin preparing for another run in Big D next season. This time, they'll have a proper offseason and training camp to get up to speed. This time, Dirk won't come in out-of-shape with a title hangover that takes more than two months to work off. This time, for these guys, the job will be the job, and not a sawed-off nod at a victory lap.
Some of them — free-agents-to-be Terry, Jason Kidd (who reportedly wants to get paid one more time), Ian Mahinmi and Delonte West, plus unguaranteed-contract types Vince Carter and Brandan Wright — will spend the late spring and early summer wondering if they'll be wearing new jerseys and occupying new locker rooms next season. That number probably also includes almost-too-obvious amnesty candidate Brendan Haywood, the current leader in the clubhouse in the race for the first round's worst overall performance — although Orlando Magic guard Chris Duhon's not far off the pace — and a big man still on the books for $37.7 million over the next four seasons.
It also includes head coach Rick Carlisle, who went offense-heavy and damned the torpedos in a work-your-tail-off effort to put a badly overmatched seventh seed in position to win three of the four games in this series. Carlisle has come to the end of the four-year contract he signed in 2008, having won 63.5 percent of his games since coming to Dallas and just under 60 percent as an NBA head coach. His tenure with the Mavericks has confirmed that Carlisle is one of the league's best coaches. If he is not retained, the Mavericks have most likely done poorly, and will suffer as a result of it.
Off the court, owner Mark Cuban and general manager Donnie Nelson will have plenty of cap space to play with — not counting unguaranteed deals, Dallas has just under $40 million committed for next year with the cap expected to hang around $58 million, and Dallas' number shrinks substantially if it can jettison Haywood and if it chooses to move Marion — which gives the Mavs a ton of flexibility heading into free agency.
Which, of course, was the plan all along.
After the league and players' union struck a new collective bargaining agreement to govern league business prior to the lockout-shortened 2011-12 campaign, Cuban allowed multiple members of the team that won the franchise's first NBA championship — center Tyson Chandler, backup point guard J.J. Barea, and wings Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson — to walk out the door rather than make any attempt to re-sign them to long-term deals. This, mostly, did not go over very well.
Mavericks fans eager to see their beloved champs get a legitimate, full-strength chance to defend their title carped at their famously free-spending owner for all of a sudden deciding to pinch pennies. Amid their jeers, Cuban openly said that the team's strategy was going to be to create as much financial wiggle room as it could going forward rather than hamstring itself by committing to salaries that would keep Dallas over the luxury tax line and subject the Mavs to the new system's significantly steeper dollar-for-dollar tax penalties. We can get the band back together and take another run at a title this year, Cuban argued, but that'll mean we take two (or more) steps backward for the years to come. Which one do you really want?
"We have to change our approach," Cuban said on Dallas radio before the start of the season in December. "By getting back under the cap, we have a ton of flexibility not only for free-agent signings, but also trades."
Cuban and Nelson made window-dressing attempts to keep the team competitive this year by plugging roster holes with veterans on short-term deals, including Carter and West, both of whom provided reasonably sound performance for the team's limited investment. Dallas also swung a trade with the lakers to import reigning Sixth Man of the Year Lamar Odom, who'd become disenchanted with l.a. after the team tried to include him in a deal that would have made Chris Paul a laker. That one didn't go so well.
All season long, the 2011-12 edition of the Dallas Mavericks bore little resemblance to last year's model; they won more than they lost and ripped off a few short winning streaks (largely against less-than-elite competition) but they never once, to my memory, looked like a legitimate threat to defend. Early-season "whens" ("When will the Mavs get it together? When will Dirk round into form?") turned into late-season "ifs" ("What if Dallas doesn't have another gear? What if Jason Kidd is as done as he looks? If Dirk's not a superhero and JET's off-target, is there somewhere else they can go?") and, at season's end, were answered with a whispered, "No."
While the temptation is to blame the drop-off on the personnel that Cuban and Nelson let go — especially after seeing Chandler move to Manhattan, turn the New York Knicks into a top-five defensive unit and earn Defensive Player of the Year honors — the facts don't quite fit that framework. The Mavericks were still a top-10 defensive team without Chandler, allowing the league's eighth-fewest points per 100 possessions and holding opponents to the league's sixth-lowest field-goal percentage while playing that mutant matchup zone that Carlisle's coaching staff has grown to favor and deploying Marion as a nightmarish cover artist capable of making life miserable for opposing scorers at four positions on any given night. Whatever ZIP code Chandler called home, the defense wasn't the problem.
No, where the Mavericks fell off a cliff was on the offensive end, which sounds weird considering they employ one of the planet's most unguardable individuals, but is true. A year after averaging just a touch under 110 points per 100 possessions, a mark good for ninth-best in the NBA, Dallas turned in the ninth-least-efficient offense in the NBA, ranking 22nd by scoring an average of just 103.3-per-100 over the course of the regular season.
That's a giant drop, but that kind of thing can happen when your one All-World monster posts across-the-board dips — Dirk went from 51.7 percent from the field last year to 45.7 percent this year, shot one more 3-pointer a game despite hitting 2.5 percent less often, grabbed a smaller share of available rebounds, assisted on a lower percentage of team baskets, used a higher share of possessions and did so less efficiently — and no secondary scorer steps in to fill the void. If anything, you could argue that Dallas missed Barea — a reserve trigger-man capable of providing an instant infusion of offense off the bench, a capable facilitator who could pick-and-roll opposing second units to death, collapsing defenses with penetration to create open looks for shooters in the corners and on the wings — more than Chandler, given the way their offensive production so often went to pot this year.
The Mavericks were a middle-of-the-pack team in terms of point differential, a middle-of-the-pack team in expected wins and a seventh seed in a strong conference. That they were swept out in the first round is a mild surprise, but not a huge one; if Dirk wasn't going to be that All-World monster, this team didn't have a prayer.
Nowitzki, who will turn 34 this offseason, is set to make $43.6 million over the next two seasons, and will continue to be the focal point of Dallas' attack. But for Dallas to return to the heights they reached last postseason, he'll have to be joined by a playmaker capable of getting him easier looks, creating his own offense and improving the quality of offensive production from the cadre of role-players that the remixed Mavs will likely employ moving forward.
That, of course, sounds an awful lot like All-Star Deron Williams, the soon-to-be unrestricted free-agent point guard who famously grew up near Dallas, who perhaps even more famously seems eager to disassociate himself from the Nets and after whom, perhaps most famously, Dallas has reportedly long lusted. The Mavs figure to be able to create enough cap space to make a serious run at one max-contract free agent (and perhaps two); Williams would seem like a natural fit. We'll have to wait and see if what seems to make sense to us makes financial sense to Cuban, Nelson, Williams and his representation and, if so, how the rest of that rebooted Dallas roster fills out before we'll have a great handle on their chances next year. All we know for sure right now is that, for the Dallas Mavericks, this year is over.
On one hand, we might mourn for the loss of a team that gave us so many thrills and such beautiful play throughout that glorious golden summer of 2011. On another, we might realize that joyful group died the minute the buzzer sounded to end the 2011 Finals, and that this year's version was ousted by a pretty freakin' joyful group in its own right, helmed by a similarly unguardable four, packed with similarly likable shooters and looking for all the world like a similarly dangerous thing just learning how to use its claws. The kings are dead. Long live their legacy."

DALLAS (AP)"Down by 13 points with less than 10 minutes remaining, youthful Oklahoma City could have easily have been content knowing they could go home for a Game 5 still needing to win only one more game.
The Thunder, with their 20-something All-Star duo Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, are instead going home to wait and see who they will play next.
And it was their other emerging star who led the way.
James Harden scored 15 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, including nine in a 12-0 run, and the Thunder rallied for a 103-97 victory Saturday night to complete a first-round series sweep of the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.
"I got into attack mode. I was determined to make plays," Harden said.
"He was phenomenal," said Durant, who scored 24 points. "His pick and roll game is unreal. It's fun to watch, fun to be part of. The best part about our team is that we have a lot of guys who can play off each other, and we complement each other well."
Dallas led 86-73 after Jason Terry hit a 3-pointer with 9:44 left before the Harden-fueled surge over 3 minutes when the only other score was a 3-poitner by Durant.
Oklahoma City finally took the lead, and kept it, after Westbrook stole the ball from Dirk Nowitzki and passed to Serge Ibaka for a two-handed slam that made it 92-91 with 5:17 left.
"This goes without saying, I'm excited we won the series," coach Scott Brooks said. "James had an incredible game. We ran pick and rolls at the angles. ... He was making plays for himself or our shooters."
Durant had 11 rebounds, while Westbrook and Fisher had 12 points each.
Oklahoma City plays the winner of the series between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver. The Lakers lead that first-round series 2-1 going into Game 4 on Sunday night in Denver.
It was the first four-game postseason sweep for the Oklahoma City franchise since 1996, when they were still the Seattle SuperSonics and swept the Houston Rockets in the second round.
Dallas is the second defending champion in five years to be swept in the first round. Miami lost in four games to Chicago in 2007, after beating the Mavericks in the 2006 NBA Finals.
Dallas had never been swept in a best-of-seven series. And the Mavericks hadn't lost four playoff games in a row since 2006 against the Heat.
But now they are the oldest team in the NBA, and vastly changed from last year's championship squad.
"It was an up and down year," said Nowitzki, the 11-time All-Star who had 34 points. "We weren't consistent enough throughout to be an elite team."
Even when Harden bobbled the ball after Oklahoma City took the lead for good, Fisher ended up with it and drove for a layup to make it 96-91. Fisher, a late-season addition to the young Thunder, won five NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Nowitzki then had a shot that hit the rim a couple of times before falling out, among several near misses for him down the stretch.
"If you want to be an elite team in this league, you got to have two or three guys who can go off at any time," Nowitzki said. "I just thought they had more weapons than us."
After Terry's 3-pointer, Harden scored seven in a row - on a three-point play and two other baskets. Durant then made a 3-pointer. After Nowitzki was short on a 14-footer, Harden drove for a powerful two-handed slam that got the Thunder within 86-85.
"He got up a head of steam and was great," said Rick Carlisle, the Mavs coach whose four-year contract is up. "We tried everything, five or six different coverages going. We needed to be better but it was more about how good he was."
The Mavs had looked like they were ready after halftime to at least force the series back to Oklahoma City, where they opened the series with two losses by a combined four points before losing by 16 at home in Game 3.
The game was tied at halftime before Nowitzki had 12 points and Kidd made three 3-pointers in the third quarter, when the Mavs scored 34 points to take an 81-68 lead.
Nowitzki drove around Ibaka for a tiebreaking one-handed reverse layup less than a minute into the second half, and the lead was up to 64-54 when Shawn Marion had a slam.
Carlisle had talked about the Mavericks controlling their emotions after his outburst in the first quarter of Game 3. He had to be held back by an assistant coach when he charged onto the court and was pointing and screaming at an official because of what he said were three missed calls on one possession, ending with Oklahoma City scoring on what appeared to be basket interference.
Before the end of the first quarter Saturday night, Carlisle was mad again - and for good reason.
Kidd had bad pass that went out of bounds, but officials missed that the ball was deflected in the air by Harden. Replays showed clearly that Carlisle had a gripe and that the loud boos were warranted. Fisher then made a 22-foot jumper.
"Not our year. Take your hat off to them. They're a good young team," Terry said. "The balls were definitely bouncing their way. You have to give them credit. It just wasn't our time."
Notes: This was Dallas' 23rd best-of-seven playoff series. The only time the Mavericks had ever been swept in the postseason was in the a first-round series in 1990 when they lost a best-of-five against Portland. .... Ibaka fouled out with 2:14 left."

<span style="color: #ff0000">Notebook</span>: Thunder 103, <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks </span><span style="color: #ff0000">97</span>.<br />
Posted By Dave Ivey, for NBA.com.<br />
<br />
"<span style="color: #ff0000">THE FACTS</span>: The Dallas Mavericks played with a lot of heart. Oklahoma City answered with a lot of James Harden, dominating the fourth quarter in a 103-97 victory in Game 4 Saturday to complete their first-round sweep of the defending NBA champions. Harden scored 15 of his 29 points in the fourth as the Thunder overcame a 13-point deficit, outscoring Dallas 35-16 in the quarter. Dirk Nowitzki scored 34, but the Mavericks didn't make a field goal for the final 5:47 with eight straight misses.<br />
<br />
Kevin Durant added 24 points and 11 boards for Oklahoma City, which faces the winner of the Lakers-Nuggets series in the next round. Los Angeles leads that series 2-1 with Game 4 on Sunday.<br />
<br />
It was <span style="color: #ff0000">an ugly end to the season for the</span> Mavs. They won the first championship in the franchise's 31-year history last season, but lost key components from that squad in the offseason, particularly center Tyson Chandler as well as J.J. Barea and Caron Butler. Bringing in Lamar Odom clearly wasn't the answer and Dallas never really established an identity. More changes could be coming, with Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Delonte West, Vince Carter, Ian Mahinmi, Brandan Wright and Brian Cardinal among a host of potential free agents.<br />
<br />
Kidd contributed 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds and was 4-for-8 from 3-point distance. Terry made his first start of the playoffs and struggled against Russell Westbrook's defense, scoring 11 points on 4-for-12 shooting. Mahinmi was the only other Maverick in double figures with 10 points.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE</span>:<br />
"We didn't crumble. I think that's the best part of our team. We've grown in that area. We never gave up."-- Durant on the fourth-quarter rally.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">THE STAT</span>: Dallas is just the <span style="color: #004000">third defending champion </span>to get the broom during the first round of the playoffs. The only other time it happened in a best-of-seven series was when the Miami Heat were swept by the Chicago Bulls in the first round in 2006-07. <span style="color: #ff0000">This was the first time the <span style="text-decoration: underline">Mavericks</span> have ever been swept in a best-of-seven</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">TURNING POINT</span>:<br />
Dallas led 86-73 on Terry's 3-pointer with 9:44 left in the game, but Oklahoma City answered with a Harden-fueled 23-5 run to build a 96-91 advantage with three minutes to play. Harden scored 11 during that stretch and Durant scored eight, including two 3-pointers. OKC shot 65 percent (13-for-20) in the final frame.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE II</span>:<br />
"[I was] in attack mode. Scotty [Brooks] put the ball in my hands in the fourth quarter and he told me to make plays. ... It was just tremendous."-- Harden<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE III</span>:<br />
"He's a good player. He sees something that he can use to his advantage and he exploits it. You have to give him credit for the way he played tonight and the whole series."-- <span style="color: #004000">West</span> on Harden.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">QUOTABLE IV</span>:<br />
"His pick-and-roll game is unreal. It's fun to watch and fun to be a part of. ... James did a great job of getting to the rim and making the right decision every time."-- Durant on Harden.<br />
<br />
QUOTABLE V:<br />
"I hope [Oklahoma City] has enough money to sign him, because he's going to be in high demand."-- <span style="color: #004000">Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle</span> on Harden.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">HOT</span>:<br />
Harden was 6-for-9 in the fourth and 11-for-16 (3-for-4 3-pointers) in the game. He added five rebounds, five assists, three steals and one blocked shot in 34-plus minutes off the bench.<br />
... <span style="color: #004000">Nowitzki</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">was 13-for-13 from the line and became just the eighth player in NBA history to make 1,000 career postseason free throws </span>(<span style="color: #ff0000">1,007</span>).<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">NOT</span>:<br />
Dallas missed its last eight field-goal attempts and shot just 22.2 percent (4-for-18) during the fourth quarter. Nowitzki was just 1-for-8 from the field in that period.<br />
... Westbrook had an off night for the Thunder, scoring 12 points on 3-for-12 shooting.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">GOOD MOVE</span>:<br />
The Thunder took advantage of Harden's quickness advantage against Kidd, which was particularly evident on his last bucket. He zipped right past the 39-year-old veteran in the paint for an easy finger-roll layup and a 102-97 lead with 33 seconds left.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">INSIDE THE ARENA</span>:<br />
Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman was among the <span style="color: #ff0000">20,533 in attendance at the sold-out AAC. Dallas has sold out 60 consecutive playoff games and 492 straight overall, dating back to Dec. 15, 2001</span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ff0000">NOTABLE</span>:<br />
Kendrick Perkins left the game in the first quarter with a right hip strain and did not return. He will be reevaluated on Sunday.<br />
... Including the two preseason wins, Oklahoma City was 9-1 against Dallas in 2011-12.<br />
... <span style="color: #006400">Dallas</span> <span style="color: #ff0000">is now 17-17 all time in playoff series</span>. .<br />
.. After the Thunder's wire-to-wire win in Game 3, this one featured much more drama with 10 lead changes and seven ties. The game was knotted <span style="color: #ff0000">47-47</span> at intermission.<br />
... Oklahoma City had a <span style="color: #ff0000">52-23 edge</span> in bench points."</span></div>
