Mavericks Tentatively Scheduled To Open Season Against Heat.
by JP Starkey •
"Well, the NBA is back, but there will be some damage control work to do by the league to reel in all the fans it might have lost because of the extended lockout, which, if you haven't noticed, shortened the 2011-12 season. As the schedule currently stands, the NBA will kickoff on Christmas day, with a trio of enticing games: Knicks/Celtics, Bulls/Lakers, and of course, Heat/Mavericks.
If there's a silver lining to the NBA lockout for Mavericks fans, it's this: the Mavericks will open the season at home on Christmas day, receive their championship rings and raise their banner... with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh all there in person to witness the festivities."
...man talk 'bout SWEET 2 have the HEAT watch!!! ipb.global.registerReputation( 'rep_post_638458', { domLikeStripId: 'like_post_638458', app: 'forums', type: 'pid', typeid: '638458' }, parseInt('0') );

Comments By Jeff Caplan.
DALLAS --"The Dallas Mavericks finally got the whole gang together for the first time to practice Wednesday and then Dirk Nowitzki had to head home with an illness.
Still, it was the first time that newcomers Lamar Odom, Vince Carter and the most recently signed, Delonte West, were all on the floor for the first of two practices today.
West, who will handle backup point guard duties for the departed J.J. Barea, said it was just good to be back playing NBA basketball again and that he's excited to pick up where Barea left off playing behind Jason Kidd.
"For a little guy, those are big shoes to fill," West said of Barea, before comparing his game somewhat to the future Hall of Famer he'll back up. "With the green eyes and 15 pounds lighter, you might say I'm a poor man's Jason Kidd."
Well, Mavs fans will get to make that determination for themselves as the season wears on. The ultimate goal for West is to allow Kidd to play about 30 minutes a night and even less in some instances throughout the compacted 66-game schedule.
West, who held down a job as a delivery man/stock room worker at a furniture store during the offseason, said he had several options for the season, but when he got the call from the Mavs he knew where he was going. And it wasn't back to Regency Furniture Showrooms where he got that job during the lockout because the court system wouldn't let him play basketball overseas stemming from his 2009 arrest for driving around with three guns.
West's one-year deal with the Mavs is for $1.1 million.
"I had a few options, but then the world champions come knocking, and me just being a fan of the Dallas Mavericks, just the way they play, an opportunity to play with -- a lot might not agree, but -- I would say play with the best basketball player, one of the best basketball players in the world with Nowitzki, and being able to learn from Jason Kidd -- I actually think our games emulate each other in a way," West said. "With J.T. (Jason Terry) being the sixth man of the year, Lamar Odom, there's a lot of things that I can pick up from guys like that and I'm just excited to be here."

Mavs add guard to camp roster.
Comments By Jeff Caplan.
DALLAS --"The Dallas Mavericks signed free-agent guard Jerome Randle to fill out the training camp roster.
Randle did not get selected in the 2010 draft and most recently played in Turkey.
There's always a chance the 5-foot-10 guard could impress and get a shot with the D-League Texas Legends up the road in Frisco."

Mavs among DeShawn Stevenson's options again.
Comments By Tim MacMahon.
"There is room on the Mavs’ roster for the return of rugged swingman DeShawn Stevenson after Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer were shipped to Denver.
It’s a matter of whether Stevenson is willing to come back to Dallas for the veteran’s minimum, which is less than a third of the $4.1 million salary he earned as a valued role player on the Mavs’ championship team.
Agent Mark Bartelstein said Stevenson, a defensive stopper who averaged 5.3 points per game and shot 38.8 percent from 3-point range last season, has multiple offers. Bartelstein indicated that Stevenson would probably make a decision within the next day.
The 6-foot-5 Stevenson is tremendously popular in the Mavs’ locker room and immensely respected by coach Rick Carlisle, who appreciated Stevenson’s toughness and professionalism while bouncing back and forth from the end of the bench to the starting lineup last season.
Stevenson started 54 games during the regular season after veteran leaders Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry suggested a lineup switch early in the year to allow Terry to return to the sixth man role. Once Rodrigue Beaubois returned from a broken foot, Stevenson fell out of the rotation until the regular-season finale, when the leadership trio persuaded Carlisle to start the defensive-minded Stevenson again.
Stevenson started every playoff game until Game 4 of the NBA Finals, when he was replaced in the lineup by J.J. Barea, a move prompted in part by Carlisle’s wish to have either Stevenson or Shawn Marion defending LeBron James at all time. Stevenson responded with a playoff-high 11 points off the bench while playing his typical tenacious defense in the series-shifting win that night.
It isn’t likely that Stevenson would get many minutes for the Mavs after the additions of Vince Carter and Lamar Odom. However, his defensive ability would make him a valuable asset during the playoffs. He’s earned the Mavs' trust by proving he’ll stay ready regardless of the circumstances."
