A Celebration of Byrnes Football 10 Years

On a cold rainy night on November 23, 2001 Byrnes would lose to Conway 19-14 in a heart breaking game that would have sent them to the State Championship, little did we know how that would motivate Byrnes Football into I guess what others now have labeled as the "Football Empire"
Let’s take a look at a few of those accomplishments.

Byrnes Football
As we gave our player of the week awards at our weekly Sunday team
meeting, I began to reflect on the year. I asked the coaches how many
State Championships they have been involved with as a player or coach.
I was astonished with the numbers that our staff has accumulated over
the years.
Coaches with State Championship Game Experience:
Miller 12
Bentley 9
Bullard 9
Gillespie 9
Srock 9
Hansen 6
Howard 6
Scott 6
Woodall 6
Bailey 5
Glenn 5
Henderson 5
Kelly 5
Crowe 4
Feiling 2
Bunton 1

But what impressed me more was when I asked the players to reflect on
the season, and list what they learned this year. I can tell you that
this was one of the most rewarding years of my career due to the overall
improvement displayed by numerous players. These young men suffered
through humiliation and trials (to the point it truly hurt) yet stuck to
the task when others doubted. Yes, I know that what they learned will
not be listed on a school district's report card or may not increase an
SAT score, but true learning was achieved.
I have listed the things the guys posted as statements of lessons
learned from this year's season:

Devos - Give maximum effort / care for one another
Jones - Everyone is important / work ethic is action / Scout Team is
important
Weldon - Football should not be the highlight of your life
Dominique - Learn to Trust others
Acevado - Leadership training
Wharton - Learn to face challenges and adversity
Dillard - Through thorns and thistle see it through
Howard - Learn to do your job to be successful
Pinson - Be respectable / Be coachable
Taylor - Relationships are important / No excuses
AJ - Commitment and keep your composure
Hudson - Perseverance
Williams - Never give up
Booker - Believe in us as coaches
Harpel - Responsibility and Accountability
Srock - Hard work pays off
Weldon - Know your seat on the bus (know your role)
Taylor - All of us have potential
Woodall - Trust in one another
Acevado - there is a difference in being hurt and injured
Jones - Have heart like Ben Clark
Bailey - football is more than X’s / O’s
Henderson - Best players must be our best leaders
Marcus - Love the game no matter what and you must practice

If we take time to listen to a young person we will learn also. Having
witnessed it first hand and regardless of how many games we win, I can
testify our players learned life lessons this year.
Thanks for truly caring about the overall development of our young
people!!

Bobby Bentley
