There may be more than one out-of-state opponent on Byrnes’ football schedule this season.
In addition to the Rebels’ season-opening game against Oscar Smith in Chesapeake, Va., they may also be on their way to New Orleans.
Byrnes, the two-time defending 4A Division I state champion, has a tentative agreement to play John Curtis (La.) as part of the Sugar Bowl Prep Classic on Sept. 7 at the Superdome, according to Spartanburg School District 5 athletic director Bobby Bentley. Plant (Fla.) and St. Paul (La.) also are scheduled to play.
Byrnes was scheduled to host Northwestern at Nixon Field in the third week of the season. The Rebels will play in New Orleans if a deal is worked out allowing the Trojans to face Tallahassee Lincoln (Fla.). That deal is expected to be finalzed this week, Bentley said.
Should the game become official, Byrnes will not host a home game until Week 4 against Clinton.
John Curtis finished 15-0 last season, winning the Class 2A state championship in a 33-3 decision against Winnfield. The Patriots averaged 43 points per game and gave up seven or fewer points in 11 contests.
Oscar Smith fell to Gilman (Md.) 51-27 in its only loss of the season last year. The Tigers rebounded by winning 14 straight games and defeated Centreville (Va.) 47-21 in the state championship game. The season-opening contest against Oscar Smith will be televised on ESPN.
It will be the second consecutive year the Rebels have traveled out of state for the season opener. Byrnes defeated Ballard (Ky.) 68-0 at the University of Louisville last year. The Rebels finished the season 13-2 overall after a 31-24 victory against Gaffney in the title game at Death Valley in December.
Byrnes is 12-3 against out-of-state opponents, including a 56-2 victory against Bayside (Fla.) at Nixon Field last year.

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome and the Allstate Sugar Bowl will host the second annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Classic on Friday, Sept. 7 in the Superdome. This year’s high school football doubleheader will feature John Curtis Christian School from River Ridge, La., against Plant (Fla.) High School and St. Paul’s High School from Covington, La., against Lincoln (Tallahassee, Fla.) High School.
"The Sugar Bowl Committee has demonstrated a strong commitment to high school football over the years, and this sponsorship serves to further showcase that tradition," said Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Paul Hoolahan. "We are proud to play a part in this event, and we look forward to the possibility of building on that support in the years ahead."
The Sugar Bowl Committee continues to be very active in the New Orleans community by holding fast to its mission of sponsoring and promoting amateur sporting events which foster revenue and spark economic growth for the city and the state. This year the Bowl will support 23 events in sports such as volleyball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, sailing, track and field, soccer and tennis, as well as football. In addition, the Allstate Sugar Bowl was a key part of the local organizing committee for the 2012 NCAA Men’s Final Four and is playing a key role in the hosting of the 2013 NCAA Women’s Final Four. It also sponsors the local chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame as well as the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame.

MAXPREPS recently released their Pre-Season rankings. #6 John Curtis & #14 Tampa Plant -- should be a good match-up. However; Pre-Season rankings seldom stay intact as the season progresses. Last year I did a comparison. If you give 1 point for #1, 2 for #2,etc. 1-25 adds up to 325. The 2010 Pre-Season & Year End rankings finished up approximately 325-1400. Half the teams in the Pre-Season rankings are lucky to finish in the top 100.From the Sugar Bowl Website:
