VIDEO TAPING A GAME???

Friday 1 October I was at the Del Rio vs S.A. Holmes game. Holmes won 24 to 21.
The game was in Del Rio. I was sitting up on the top row with lots of Holmes parents and the Holmes Principal. I was making a video along with about 4 other men, we each had our own equipment.
At the start of the 3rd qtr. a unformed Security "policeman" with a night stick came up in the stands and told one of the parents who was taping that it was their policy that no taping was allowed. All the others kept taping. Then a man in plain cloths came up to two others and said they couldn't tape,
I just kept on taping. The security guys were on the track staring at me. I wanted them to try to arrest me or something - but they didn't . I taped all the game.
MY QUESTION IS: Has anyone ever heard that a parant can't tape a football game. It was a first for me.

I use a digital cam and I am not really interested in "game film" type of footage so much as I am in "action shots" type footage. So if you saw my footage you wouldn't be able to see the entire field of play or know what the defensive backs were doing (for that matter anybody not near the ball as I tend to follow it where ever it goes). I like getting shots of the cheerleaders doing goofy stuff and the other support ogranizations (pom pom girls, dance squads, band, those guys who inflate the tunnels, people dancing or doing interesting stuff in the stands). Of course, I tend not to get asked many questions when I am taping games and the teams I have followed haven't been all that hot to begin with so I don't really think they care who sees them at this stage (luckily for me, I would hate to get into a throwdown with some security smurf over my cam).

Since I posted Had more information via phone.
#1. If a District's AD did not want taping in his stadium: it has to be brought up and voted on in the District Meeting of the ADs and Principals BEFORE the season starts. An AD in a Dist. cannot ( legally or ethically) just decide on his own that for a particular game parents cannot tape.
#2. The school I am interested in has 2 Audiovisual men taping, one for offense and one for defense....so it is easier to grade. They are experienced.
#3 I found out that the AD in question had not brought this up at the Dist. meeting and was "flying by the seat of his pants". My AD says they were out of bounds to ask a parent to stop taping the game. But hey, what do you expect from that Border town, Del Rio. That AD just wanted to flex the muscles to show off.

or their daughter cheerleading or whoever in the band. I would think that if it is
a "problem" a major notice would be have been mailed out to all parents. It just
sounds like major grandstanding by the "rent a cops and such!"

I did not think that it was illegal for a parent to video tape their son playing football
or their daughter cheerleading or whoever in the band. I would think that if it is
a "problem" a major notice would be have been mailed out to all parents. It just
sounds like major grandstanding by the "rent a cops and such!"
In order to prevent video taping it just has to be posted at the gates.
When I am booking and promoting concerts I often have to regulate video, and even still photography.... It is usually on the back of the ticket that by using the ticket to enter you agree to abide by any legal regulations, posted rules, and security requests.
If it is on the ticket properly or posted and a security officer asks you to stop... and you do not... he has the right as an employee to remove you...
We have had instances where we have confiscated tapes.... had folks yell and make threats... they don't like it when the cops, and judge tell them they broke the rules....
I figure Exporter will be reading his tickets before entering now!!!

U.I.L. rules prohibit drinking alcohol and using tobacco plus cursing at refs and players by the spectators. Those are written rules, again I say those are written U.I.L. Rules and they do not carry the weight of REAL LAWS in the State of Texas.
An analogy would be for a security guard to accost you for breaking the school dress code as you walk by the school on a school property sidewalk, since you are barefooted and wearing a mini-skirt with a full beard and shoulder -length hair. Can he arrest you, a forty year old man just walking by the school?
To the point, at the game there were no warnings, no signs prohibiting taping and we all had been taping for the last 10 to 15 years. This AD just got a "wild hair" and decided to show off. I am told that the AD from San Antonio Northside ISD is contacting the Del Rio ISD AD and getting it all smoothed out. Not a word had been said at the District Meeting before the season began. So the actions of the Del Rio AD were like making up new rules after the game had started.

How many cups of java did you have this morning?
Hint: Tomorrow cut back by 2!!
LOL
I never said he had the right to accost you....
If you show up at the local high school stadium and on the back of your ticket it has a warning about video cameras.... or ... if a sign is posted at the gate... he can take the tape from you.
State law allows the owners of property to govern the activities on that property.... including photography!!
If you come to one of my concerts... I will be sure to forewarn you!!
LOL

Now John Hawk: I am now educated about filming at an entertaiment event. I assure you I will not violate your prohibitions on taping, filming or otherwise removing images from your property. No Sir, if there is a written request for "No Filming" then no filming it will be!
You can understand the several people who have been taping for years and years, driving about 3 hours to the game, then they want to tape their kids who are playing.....and all of a sudden in the 3rd Qtr. a goon comes up into the stands with a billy club and says ,"No taping". Now that is way out of line. Before this incident, there was never a inkling of anything being wrong with taping the kids. I have taped in about 15 different towns since I got my camera about 8 years ago.
I really think that you, HawkMan, see the taping from the standpoint of one who promotes bands and entertainment. I ask you, what is the harm of some poor joker taping a band at one of your shows? Do you think he will go out and charge admission for people to see it? Is that it? Don't be so stingy.
I will cut it to 2 cups of coffee tomorrow.

Coffee?? What?? Was I too forthright? It's all in the eyes of the beholder, right?

To be honest... I have NO problem with folks bringing their cameras and camcorders....
BUT ----
I have to enforce the contract with the band.... whether it is Brooks & Dunn, Asleep at the Wheel, Cory Morrow....etc... each one has a contract rider that stipulates the conditions they will perform under... what food you feed them, beverages, size of the stage... and yes... some restrict filming and photography....
Why... copyright... and they make money selling videos and photos....
It is my job to make sure the contracts are fulfilled, when a security officer, or uniformed police at one of my shows takes a camera and the individual pitches a fit... and my head of security can't make them see the light... I get the call on the radio... I usually have to listen to threats.... I hope they calm down.... if not they are removed... and can be prosecuted for criminal trespass... be banned from the facility..... most....99.9%..... admit to either not knowing or just admit they were wrong.... we usually take the film or hold the camera till the show is over.... amazing the correlation to alcohol sold or consumed and how long it takes to talk reason into folks in those situations....

I just weent to the bathroom and got a wonderful idea for you.
You promote big-time Country & Western singers etc.
If you were to promote a "Michael Moore" extravaganza out in Midland and invite such dignitaries James Carvill and Mary Matalyn, would it be a hit?
Oh man, you'd be famous all over Texas! Try to hold it at the new staduim. And be sure to have a Hipp-Hop band there to make Moore feel at home.
Haaah , Haa, Haaa, Ha, Haa. Oh Boy, youd be the toast of the town ....or something else. I just heard Michael Moores appearance has been canceled at the University of Colorado. He's free!
