In this list, each team will still be listed in their district by enrollment in descending order. The top two teams are guaranteed DI if they make the playoffs. The bottom two teams are guaranteed DII if they make the playoffs. I added the teams nicknames, the overall w-l record for 2011, district record, previous district, last playoff round in 2011, and last opponent in playoffs, if applicable. I will try to add last playoff runs for teams that didn't make the playoffs and deepest playoff runs for each 5A team in the near future but it will take a while.

2012-2014 Class 5A realignment with additional data:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuWk0g5GaFWwdEVhNWdIUFJPdVdUMFR3ckUwaG1qRXc

The alignments for the 4A and 3A teams. In these tables, the data includes team nicknames, w-l record plus district record, previous district, last playoff round in 2011, and the last playoff opponent they faced. The established column is empty. I am still working on getting the years on when each school was established. Later on, I will try to add last playoff run for teams that didn't make the playoffs and deepest playoff run for all the teams. These last two will take quite a while so I'm in no rush to finish those yet. I hope to get the fight songs for each school too.

Class 4A:

Class 3A:

I will work on a 2A-Six-Man spreadsheet in July.

I figured that this list is not a bad reference because people can see their new district alignments, where new district foes previously played and how well they fared. Also, I think it's good to have their last playoff round in there to show how far they advanced and how the new district compares to each team in that respect. Take a look at 16-3A and the teams in that district are quite impressive.

Top two teams in 4A are guaranteed D-I. Bottom two teams are guaranteed D-II. There are teams in the district listings that may not play football and are included in the district just because I wanted to put them in there. They play basketball only or do not participate fully in football. These teams are in the middle of the district listing and will not be listed as the bottom two teams due to saving those spots for teams that are guaranteed to be D-II if they make the playoffs. The 3A listings are the same except only one team goes D-I. Any team on the top of the district in this list are guaranteed to go D-I if they make the playoffs.

Also, I have a full listing of the entire 32 team districts in 2011. It also has each district champ's playoff run, the DI and DII rep listed, as well as tiebreakers that took place if they needed to. Plus, I have District 23-5A listed differently because 23-5A used a Zone format and how they got their playoff reps was quite different than the other districts.

The Entire 32 districts of Texas 5A football in 2011

In any event, here ya go. I hope y'all enjoy! I want to acknowledge 5ATF, Maxpreps, THSF.com, TOC, local newspapers, the UIL website, and various fans for explaning the tiebreakers. They gave me a lot of data and I hope I was very accurate with these listings. If there are any errors on records and such, please let me know. I will research it and fix it if I did mess up. Thanks!

I worked on a re-alignment project about year ago to see what a 6A would look like. It took me months and I never really got it completely finished by the time the real re-alignment came around, but at least I got some valuable information out of it. Those lower classifications are really hard trying to create districts from scratch. I learned a lot about Texas Geography.

They need to stick to the way it is now; except for one thing -- only allow 2 teams into the playoffs; Texas hasn't had a "True"
State Champion since 1989.
1. There aren't enough large enrollment teams to create a 6A.
2. Travel -- El Paso & Amarillo would likely be in the same district.
3. Once a school has 2000-2500 students they've got all they need to be a great team.
Look at Katy & Lake Travis for example. If it really mattered; then Allen, Plano teams,
Converse Judson, Dallas Skyline & others with over 4000 students would be 10-0
every year outscoring teams 500-50.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion but what does SMH mean? By the way who was #1 last year -- SLC OR Spring Dekaney? If the UIL went back to the 2-team format their wouldn't be anything to wonder about. It would be cut and dry.

Del Valle answered about SMH.

Who gives a flying flip about who was #1? This is Texas. We don't care anything about polls.

Look, I've said it before, I agree there should be only one Division per Class, as well as only two playoff teams per district. As long as the "suits" are running the UIL, we just have to take what comes our way. To win a 64 team tournament is quite an accomplishment. I am not about to discredit ANY of those teams or downplay their titles. They did what they had to do and deserved the Trophies and Rings. I am personally offended by your opinion about there having not been a "true" champion since 1989.

1. 6A isn't needed or being considered because of large enrollment schools and any discrepancy between the largest and smallest. 6A is needed and being considered to accommodate growth.

In 1990 there was approximately 17 Million Texas residents according to rhe US Census Bureau. Today there are over 25 Million. In 1990 the 5A cutoff number (minimum enrollment to be in 5A) was 1,460. In 2012 it is 2,065. There are currently 1,445 Texas Public High Schools according to the Texas Education Agency. In 1990 there approximately 1,000. Not only are there more High Schools, but the Enrollments are much higher now.
2. Adding a true 6th 11 man football classification would not have nearly the affect on travel you might think. 6A would basically be the 175-185 most populous current 5A schools for example. Your point about El Paso and Amarillo being in the same district is absolutely incorrect and not based on any facts whatsoever. You might wanna do some research before just throwing things out there. I am not the kind of person to just believe what I read. I tend to research things for myself.
3. Completely irrelevant as well as a matter of opinion.

My point is that there might not be enough schools in the El Paso & Amarillo,Lubbock,Odessa,Midland with large enough enrollments to create a 6A. I only see 2 in District I and 2 in District II with over 3000 if that were the cutoff. I suppose the cutoff would have to be somewhat lower that 3000.

Right. If you simply divided all 11 man teams into six roughly equal Classifications, the 6A cutoff # would be in the 2,400's. There are six in 1-5A now and five in 2-5A. The five in 2-5A just happen to be the Oddesa, Midland and San Angelo schools. Five is not perfect, but it can work. Then the Abilene, Lubbock and Amarillo current 5A would stay 5A and join other current 4A's who would become 5A's from those towns to form two 5A districts.

As I mention 6A is needed simply to accommodate growth, so there is no need to make a 3,000+ 6A, which would present travel issues.

Here is a copy of the proposal I presented to the UIL to prove feasibility of a 6th division in football. I have since done a new one using new numbers, but this shows that it is very possible, and I think in the future a necessity to change the current format.

Alignment Proposal

For the past three alignments I have created my own set of alignments with the idea of making things more fair for schools and resolving some of the chief complaints, those being disparity in size among the largest and smallest schools in each classification, and travel distance. I have taught in different functions at school districts including a district with multiple 5A schools, a 3A district, three 2A districts, and two 1A districts that played 6-man football. I have coached football and track, been a band director, directed one-act play, and coached various academic and debate teams, and feel that I have a unique insight into the various aspects of the classification process and the challenges these schools face.
Once again, I decided this time to follow the trends already being established by the UIL. In class 1A we have a Division I and division II already in place. In football the Division II is divided into two divisions of their own. This is actually a very good idea and helps to get rid of the disparity from top to bottom. There is no reason, however, to have this division in football and not extend it to basketball, spring sports, and academic events. The smaller schools really cannot compete against schools up to four times their size, not just in football, but also in basketball, track and field, One-act play, band, and academic events, and this would give them a shot at success for the first time. In addition, by having only one district for all sports, the experience of having real district rivalries is increased as well.
In my proposal division 1A follows what the UIL has already done. I have renamed the divisions within this as they should be; calling them 1A, 2A, and 3A. I have also added a division to the top end in order to end the disparity argument. Most of the districts have 5 to six members, which the UIL has already demonstrated that they are willing to use. The argument of distance is moot, as most schools will be able to play all of the same teams they have played previously, and will be able to choose more of the teams they play, unlike the unfortunate teams who had been placed into ten team districts in past alignments, especially those of West Texas who already had the furthest travel times of any schools in Texas.
The top five divisions all have as close to the same number of schools as possible in them, so there is no division with teams packed into districts like sardines, like those which in some cases exist currently and have existed in the past. The last division of 11-man schools has a a few more schools, which helps to make up for the number of schools not electing to play football. There are fewer byes and more football districts than have existed in the past in this division as well. With the schools being more even as to size, the necessity of two divisions within a classification is negated and a clear-cut winner in each classification can be crowned, although that will be left up to the coaches in those divisions as it is currently. In the 6-man divisions there are thirteen football districts, and sixteen districts for all other activities.
