Question...

During thursday's game, E-E scored on all of it's offensive possessions in its EXTREMELY limited time on offense (6 or 7 minutes and save one fumble in the 4th Quarter). PSJA Memorial (despite being limited to 65 total yards) only, and I repeat ONLY scored and kept it close because every play after they received the ball resulted in an obsurd penalty against E-E (for example: Fan interference - 7 times for 25 yards EACH time, sacking the QB resulting in holding ON THE PERSON SACKING THE QUARTERBACK, RESULTING IN ROUGHING THE PASSER - 10 times for 35 yards EACH time, illegal formation "too many men in the box" to stop a run - 2 times for 15 yards)....it's amazing what you can do with 8 downs each series. I wonder what type of intervention will happen with the refs. PSJA's players scratched the eyes of our players during the game after the play was dead, kicked the entire team's players when their were down, and purposely punched their ribs whenever they got a shot...but not a single flag was thrown against PSJA Memorial. The entire game was videotaped by most of the fans and the coaching staff, however, any time that our coaching staff questioned a call, an unsportsmanlike conduct flag was thrown and so was a "arguing with the officials" flag. Talk about crap...after the game, they ran to avoid the E-E administration and athletic director having words with them. Other than a formal complaint against the entire squad to the UIL and the actual organization that the referees are from, is there anything else that can be done? A full copy of the video will be sent also; this video includes footage from half time where players are getting deep cuts under their eyes dressed and putting ice on their legs and ribs with nasty bruises developing. I hope this type of stuff doesn't happen to anyone, but sadly, it does.

Gregory-Portland 15 Calallen 8 -Final-

The refs appeared to have been paid off by the Calallen coaching staff. Whether or not this is true, I cannot say, but every time that Calallen needed a defensive stop (or a first down) the coaches would call the ref over and then the ref would throw a flag against GP. This included a 10 yard penalty before the 2nd half started.

El Paso refs do not seem to like us. In Franklin vs. Bel-Air, they were throwing punches and taking late shots at our knees in an attempt to blow them out. All they do is warn them every time. However, if one of our guys retaliates just once by pushing them back, we get thrown out of the game. They threw one of our guys out because he blocked a guy out of bounds, the guy tripped, and pulled our guy on top of him. Then the absolute worst refs were our game against Coronado, the line judge calls a 5 yard facemask. The ref then says "We are going to make that a 15 yarder." Then the line judge replies, "No it was only a 5 yarder." Yet they go and mark off a 15 yarder, without conferring or anything. The ref didn't even throw a flag, even though the line judge was late throwing his. Then the worst call I have ever seen, it is 3 and 1 on our 49, they give to the fullback, or lineback stuffs them on the 50, and drives him back, yet they give him "forward progress" to the 48 1/2. Then on 4th and short, they try a qb sneak, they get a very good spot, considering he never passed the LOS. Then when they come out to measure, it is a good 2 links short of a first down. yet somehow against what all the officials say, the ref gives them a first down. And they were gonna call pass interferance against our corners no matter what they did. I guess that they did not want those teams to get embarressed.

I think any time a human is making split second decisions there will be erors. But I feel like the quality of referees is spiraling down hill at a fast rate and I wonder who will be there to stop the fall. Will it be electronics or of human descent?I have seen some poor referees in the last four to five years and I have watched veteran referees seeming careless about the kids.I feel the integrity of the game is terrible at best in the metroplex areas with the kids caring less and less about the history of the game and trying to glorify themselves in a rediculous manner. How shallow is it for a team to be down by three touch downs and have some kid on he losing side make one tackle and jump around like an ape in the zoo grunting and pounding his chest like he just saved the world.....give me a break teach the kids respect for each other, thier oponents, coaches, family, referees, and most of all fear of GOD....Start keeping the kids in line on the field and hold the coaches and schools accountable.Throw the FLAG on unsportsman like behavior as well as the easy line up calls.Consentrate on the infraction that get kids hurt like face mask, late hits sphere,etc... not just the easy FAT MAN calls of off sides and motion.

Yeah, I think the refs are more pressured than the athletes themselves sometimes. Having said that, it's more of a reason for them to step up to the plate. The way I see it: these days, you've seen refs call tons of games. You've seen refs make tons of mistakes. You've even seen some of those refs have their lives threatened because of those mistakes. So if you decide to be a ref, you know what you're getting yourself into.

And sure, refs screw up a lot, and sometimes it costs your team the game (cough, cough, Austin High game, cough) but ranting about it doesn't get you that win.

One of the 'biggest' problems with the officials is that the stripes do not make them all look thinner....

Maybe one of the biggest problems is that most people who are interested in football want to be coaches and not refs. All of the good refs are in the NCAA or NFL ranks, so that leaves a bunch of partisan and biased people in the HS ranks. Ultimately, a referee has to really love the sport of football so much that he dedicates himself to not be a fan of any program, but a neutral observer. I have tried to condition my own opinion in this fashon everytime that I watch a game. I don't cheer, I don't yell, and I am mostly quiet, but I am observing and trying to disect what the other team is doing.

There are good refs out there, it is just there are a lot of bad ones who don't know the difference between the NFL's rules, the NCAA's rules, the UIL's rules, or the NFHS's rules. Ultimately getting paid off is not too hard, a ref may earn a decent amount of money for a game, but more often than not it is not hard for a corrupt official to be paid off by a rich booster. It is also not hard for a bad ref to just ruin the game by working with other bad refs who are unfamiliar with the rules.

In order to fix this problem, it might be a really good idea to start training women to be refs. Think about it, none of them would ever be seriously considered for a head coachng spot any time soon, for the most part they don't know the game that well to begin with so training them won't have a bunch of preconceived notions to get rid of, and mostly since they don't really care who wins or loses, they will remian impartial. I could be wrong on this, but it might be worth exploring.

HP and RWH game----
"you forgot to mention that he did it against 7, 8, 9 men in the box PLUS 5 more in stripes!!!"

#8 for the Hawks caught the pass and WENT out-of-bounds, but the ref signaled to continue the clock!!!!

4ourth and 2wo from the 10 yard line and HP goes for it and attempts a goal line pass and gets a Face guarding call on RWH!!

1irst play is straight up the middle for a TD=17-10...but wait is it a TD or a fumble?.
Refs blows the whistle and calls it a TD [but replay] shows the HP td was knocked loose a yard before it crossed the goal line!!

"Some VERY curious calls by the refs in this game. HP was very lucky to even make it to OT. Couldn't the head ref have overruled the sidge judge on that pass where the reciever steps out of bounds at the 24? There should have been an officials' timout & time put back on the clock IMO. But Heath won anyway- great game & Kendial Lawrence is a beast! "

"The Rockwall Heath announcers were saying it was a good call as it had to do with forward motion and he stepped out going backwards. "

"it looked as if he jumped sideways to get out of bounds after establishing his possesion to me."

None so devastating that they cost us any game.

Biggest issue I"ve seen this season is w/that fine line between Pass Interference & Tackling As/After The Ball Is Touched. Seen a fair few flags get thrown for interference which shouldn't have. Seen a lot of blatant holds that didn't get called. But those are the two easiest to miss, if you're a ref w/two dozen bodies running all over the field you're trying to keep an eye on.

Refs at the Austin High game this weekend better not make mistakes or one of the two sides is gonna be up in arms. Westlake does not take well to losing to Austin High, and Austin High does not take well to losing to Westlake.
