[edit] 1920 to 1950
[edit] 1951 to present[edit] 5AI realize that there are many districts and many years in which there were 2, 3 or even 4 co-champs officially proclaimed but this is a table of the team that got the top seed for each district going in to the playoffs, or in other words, this is a table of teams that would have qualified for the playoffs if the 1 team per district rule (pre-1982) was still in effect. 1951 was the first year that the UIL divided all 11-man programs into 5 classifications, determined by enrollment, with the smallest designated Class B (which did not have a playoff to a state championship until 1972) then 1A, 2A, 3A and the largest was 4A. In 1980 the 5 classification system changed essentially in name only with the smallest classification changing from class B to 1A, 1A to 2A, 2A to 3A, 3A to 4A and a new 5A was designated for the largest schools. Over 90% of the 4A schools from 1979 were part of 5A in 1980 so the new 5A was just a continuation of what had been 4A. The original 4A in 1951 included only 52 teams, divided into 8 districts. As the population of Texas grew, and the number of larger high schools increased, it required an increase in number of districts with 4A increasing from 8 to 16 districts starting in 1956. With continued growth and with desegregation in the late 60's making it mandatory for the dozens of segregated all-black schools to be allowed to compete in the UIL, 4A increased once again from 16 districts to 32 in 1968, and the number of districts has remained constant up to the present day. Only 8 programs have competed in the largest classification all 88 seasons since the UIL playoff system was started in 1920: Abilene, Amarillo, Austin SFA, Fort Worth Paschal, Galveston Ball, Lubbock High, San Angelo Central and John Tyler High. Only 16 programs have competed in the largest classification all 57 seasons since the modern system was started in 1951: Abilene, Amarillo, Austin SFA, Baytown Lee, Corpus Christi Ray, Fort Worth Paschal, Galveston Ball, Houston Austin, Houston Lamar, Houston Milby, Laredo Martin, Lubbock High, Odessa High, Pasadena High, San Angelo Central and John Tyler High. The color coding is indicative of the general location of the entire district for each particular year, not the individual team listed, thus for example, Corsicana could possibly be dark blue when part of a district including mainly Waco and Killeen area teams, in brown when in a district of primarily DFW area teams and light blue when in a district primarily of East Texas teams.

This increased to 16 districts in 1956 and remained at 16 districts through 1987. In 1988 the numbering of districts in 4A increased to 32 but there were not actually 32 districts with teams assigned to each until 1996. From 1988-1995 there were not enough 4A teams to adequately fill 32 districts so there were blank districts which had no teams assigned to them. Districts paired with a blank district in the 1st round of the playoffs thus got a bye and played an Area round game as their first actual playoff game.
