BREAKING NEWS: #1 QB in Nation Decommits from Texas

Quinn Ewers, from Southlake Carroll, the #1 ranked Junior Quarterback and player in the nation, has decommitted from the Texas Longhorns. Ohio State and Alabama are rumored to be the most likely landing spots for Ewers with the Buckeyes name coming up most often in rumors.

Here is the statement by Ewers that he released on Twitter:

“Recently, as I’ve competed alongside my teammates during my junior season at Southlake Carroll, I’ve also taken some time to think about my future. Given the COVID-19 pandemic facing us, this has been a challenging year for students like myself, with the support of my family, I tried to navigate the recruiting process the best way I could. With the process being abnormal this season, I tried my best to keep an open mind to all possibilities. However, the more I’ve considered the more I’ve come to realize I didn’t explore all options as thoroughly as I would have liked. Therefore, I’ve decided to de-commit and reassess the situation before making such an important decision on my future. I would like to thank the University of Texas for their belief in me and my abilities. I understand this year has been challenging for the coaches and administrators as well, so I appreciate their understanding and wish them the best in their future. My family and I also thank Texas Longhorn fans were their interest in support. I will soon have a firm decision on where I will spend the next few formative years of my life and career and I look forward to sharing that with you.”

The 6’3” 205lb Junoir quarterback threw for 4,003 yards and 45 touchdowns last year while completing over 70% of his passes last season. He led the Southlake Carroll Dragons to a 13-1 season. He is having another strong season and has the Dragons at 2-1. Their one loss was a 42-44 loss at Rockwall. He and the Dragons were set to play on ESPN a week ago, though the game was canceled due to COVID-19. Ewers and the Dragons will be a threat to win a state title this year.This is a big loss for the Texas Longhorns. Quinn Ewers was their biggest recruit in a long time and likely would have moved into the starting position as a freshman when he got to Austin. Ohio State would seem to be an enticing landing spot for Ewers as they’ve recently put a few QB’s into the NFL and their QB this year, Justin Fields is a Heisman favorite and likely Top 5 pick in the next NFL Draft. Alabama has Freshmen Bryce Young waiting to take over next year as a Sophomore at QB and it would seem it most likely Ewers would have to wait until his Sophomore or Junior season to start at Alabama, though with his talent anything is possible. Ohio State might be his best option to start as a Freshmen for one of the top programs in the country. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. We would not rule out other schools from getting in the mix.
