University of Houston head football coach Tom Herman leads the Cougars into an opening-week showdown against Oklahoma with a Heisman trophy candidate quarterback in John Tyler product Greg Ward Jr., and with high expectations following last year’s Peach Bowl win over Florida State.

Herman was in Kilgore on Friday afternoon for the Houston Football Camp at Kilgore High School. An estimated 300 football players were in attendance for the camp. Before things began, Herman talked with the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Question: East Texas has been really good to the University of Houston, huh?

Coach Herman: The list is very long (of special East Texas players at Houston), and not just on our current team, but in the history of U of H. You don’t need to look any further than our two kids from John Tyler right now with Greg Ward Jr. and Tyus Bowser. They are both leaders on our team, starters and big-time contributors for us.
