CONROE, Texas — Homecoming is a time for celebration and Conroe Oak Ridge was able to cap Friday night with a 24-21 win against Montgomery High School at Woodforest Bank Stadium.

Montgomery needed momentum early and didn’t get it, fumbling on their first drive and giving the ball to the War Eagles before they could get anything started. In their two quarterback system, Oak Ridge went with Reinard Britz first, who quickly acquitted himself with a 92-yard bomb to wide receiver Tanner Lacy to put them on the board. The War Eagles scored again on their next drive off a screen pass to Darrius Jelks.

Montgomery was shut down for most of the first half, but finally scored off a little trickery on 33-yard double pass to running back Alex Nunn with under five minutes left in the second quarter. Oak Ridge’s offense churned out yards the entire first half, but didn’t score again until they kicked a field goal to go up 17-7 as the clock ran down on a messy first half which had 15 penalties.

Both teams traded touchdowns to start the second half; the War Eagles off a two-yard rush and the Bears of a 26-yard rush. It was a grueling second half as both teams leaned on their running game the last two quarters. Oak Ridge’s defense contained the Bears, but they managed to score again which pulled the Bears within three which forced the Oak Ridge coaching staff to change their game plan from attempting run the clock out.

They couldn’t score again and Montgomery’s defense deserves a lot of credit as they held the War Eagles to just seven points in the second half. The Bears’ offense spent the fourth quarter looking poised for an upset, but Oak Ridge’s defense applied just enough pressure in their final drive and forced the Bears to turn the ball over on downs with a minute left.
