Fort Bend Marshall defeats Texas City in Landslide Game

MISSOURI CITY, Texas— Fort Bend Marshall defeated District 23-5A rivals Texas City in a 42-12 rout Thursday night at Ken Hall Stadium.

The victory came just weeks after suffering a detrimental 56-27 loss against top-ranked Manvel. Reversing course after the tough loss to the Mavericks, the Buffaloes have gone 3-0, scoring 150 points and only allowing 25 points in three games.

Fort Bend Marshall (6-2, 5-1) has been hot since the loss to Manvel on Oct. 14, winning its third straight victory — including games against Ball, Fort Bend Elkins. According to the coach on the other sideline, it looks if they keep getting better and better each game.

“They’re talented as can be over there,” Texas City Head Coach Leland Surovik said. “They’re gonna make you make mistakes.”

It may be a poignant quote by Surovik and one that’s honest, but there also may be a touch of falsehood to it. In reality, Marshall fumbled more than Texas City, threw more picks, gave up a safety, and racked up nearly two and a half more times the penalty yards.

Texas City, in theory, should’ve been neck-and-neck with Marshall.

The difference? The Buffaloes had depth and a lot of it.

Running backs Devon Achane and Korey King both had hat tricks on the night, scoring three times apiece and from distances of 7, 16, 42, 55, 56, and 71 yards away. Not a normal box score.

Not normal at all.

To make matters even odder, the first score of the game came on a bad snap in a punting situation near the goal line for Marshall. Kicker William Hernandez hopped on the ball in the end zone (pause for golf clap for football awareness) ensuring no touchdown to be scored off the bad snap. Unfortunately for Texas City, that was quite possibly the most exciting thing that happened to them all night. Tragic.

Fort Bend Marshall made the most of their field day Thursday night, rushing for just over 450 yards and limiting Texas City to 225 yards on the day. It’s still tough to see just how good this Marshall team is.

The press has them just teetering on number rank status. Antithetically, coaches in and around the Houston-area have been quoted on their worries for facing the Buffaloes in the postseason.

All-in-all, it’s safe to say that this year’s team is exponentially better than the 2016 squad. The only sour note is that everyone seems to have improved this year. As the season continues, we might begin to see the rapid acceleration of state semi-finalist or the calamitous first-round departure of a team that couldn’t keep its composure or the status quo at hand.
