Four Downs From Week Two of Small School Texas Football

Week two of high school football in Texas is in the books. Once again, many great storylines emerged from last weekend’s contests, but let us take a look at the four most intriguing stories from the action in 4A down to six-man:

Top ranked Yoemen defeated

Behind the stellar performance of QB Jett Truss, the Gatesville Hornets pulled off perhaps the biggest upset in Texas last week, topping Cameron Yoe 31-26. Gatesville jumped out to a 14-0 lead by the second quarter, but Yoe rallied back to take a 19-17 lead into the final quarter. After trading touchdowns, Gatesville found themselves down by a point, but continued the rally with Truss’ fourth touchdown of the game, a 10 yard run to put the Hornets ahead.

Yoe did have one last chance to snatch the win, having marched to the Hornets one yard line. However a touchdown was called back for an illegal motion penalty, then the ball was fumbled and recovered by Gatesville’s Derrick Bayer to seal the deal. Truss finished the game with 121 rushing yards and three touchdowns, as well as 121 yards passing with an additional score.
Gatesville finished the 2016 season with a 4-6 record, having started out 0-2 with losses to Yoe and Waco Connally in week one. Gatesville’s starting 2017 with a 2-0 mark, having also defeated Connally 38-14 in the season opener.

Cuero prevails in clash of ranked teams

County rivalries are always among the more highly competitive football games, as Cuero and Yoakum know. However with both teams entering with a sixth place ranking in their respective classification, the 108th meeting of DeWitt County foes was especially one to watch.

Cuero continued their stranglehold on the all-time record, topping the Bulldogs 41-13 behind a dazzling performance by Jordan Whittington. The receiver hauled in five passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, but was even more potent on the ground, rushing for 148 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries.

Rough week for ranked small schools

Cameron Yoe and Yoakum are just the beginning of last week’s shakeups in the rankings. After taking a 7-3 lead into the final quarter, a touchdown at the 8:27 mark by Argyle Liberty Christian’s Kason Howell proved to be the game winner as seventh ranked Celina was stunned 10-9. Elsewhere, Brock (#2 in 3A) suffered their first loss at home in program history with a 26-9 defeat against Midland Chrsitian, China Spring (#10 in 4A) dropped their contest against Huntsville 17-14, and Clifton edged Crawford (#4 in 2A) 21-20. Meanwhile in six-man: Jonesboro dropped to eighth in DI after a 71-44 loss to Milford, and Follett dropped to ninth in DII with last week’s 44-20 defeat to Turkey Valley.

Football is back on the Gulf Coast

It is absolutely wonderful to see high school football played once again by schools previously affected by Hurricane Harvey. Refugio returned to action last week, and topped Goliad 35-28 in one of a handful of week two games which were the first of the season for many teams. Sinton topped Rockport-Fulton 25-6, but this game in particular was more than just numbers on a scoreboard.

Just about two weeks after Rockport took a direct hit from the eye of the Category 4 storm, the team was able to play a football game. They, like several schools along the Coastal Bend, were able to provide their communities with a reprieve, perhaps even a sense of normalcy.
