Four games are set to be played Saturday with the first of those games scheduled at 10:30 a.m. between Denton Ryan and Colleyville Heritage for the 5A DI Region I championship.

Denton Ryan (13-0) has hardly missed a step this year with a defense led by seniors Jason Gulley and Toby Burch that hold opponents to an average of under 17 points a game and an offense that has averaged 45 points on offense since October. Junior quarterback Spencer Sanders has been at the forefront of this high-octane offense.

Sanders has thrown for 3,056 yards and 36 touchdowns on the season. Besides his superb ability to sling the ball around, Sanders is also the leading rusher for the Denton Ryan offense. His rushing ability has allowed him to rush for 990 yards and six touchdowns to compliment his quarterback play.

Don’t let the individual numbers fool you though as Sanders has a plethora of talent surrounding him in running back Tyreke Davis and receivers Chritauskie Dove and Gabriel Douglas. Davis accounts for 874 rushing yards and nine touchdowns and both receivers have produced over 1,000 yards for the season. The balance that this Denton Ryan team has on offense is remarkable, but their opponent in Colleyville Heritage presents a defense that has begun to buckle down at the right time.

Heritage (10-3) has allowed 21 points a game so far in the playoffs, but are keen on making adjustments at the half that close the door on any more opportunities come the second half. Heritage pounces on mistakes made by quarterbacks with corner Marcus Mosley and linebacker Sage Webb securing passing lanes by nabbing four and two interceptions respectively on the season.

Offensively for Heritage, this team has produced 44 points on average this season and can be expected to gain up to 467 yards of total offense. Quarterback Cam Roane has thrown 31 touchdowns and 2,768 yards. His favorite target has been Kam Brown who has 12 touchdown receptions and 725 yards receiving. Running back Mario Ortiz has hit the century mark in every playoff game so far and ran for 240 yards in Heritage’s last playoff game.

Heritage and Ryan do have a common opponent in Richland who both defeated Richland in November with Heritage winning 53-36 and Ryan winning 34-14.
