The coverage from both secondaries was nothing short of stellar.

Carthage’s secondary will obviously grab the headlines with their interceptions, but there were some excellent plays made by the Wylie secondary as well. Both posted lots of coverage sacks, both were excellent in forcing the quarterbacks into bad decisions.

Let’s talk about the Carthage secondary. All night, tipped passes seemed to fall into their hands. That’s not done by accident, that’s not blind, dumb luck, that’s fantastic coverage. They were in the area, they were in tight enough coverage to make a play on the ball, and they retained their focus until the ball hit the turf. Three of those times, the ball didn’t hit the turf, and it was the difference.

The Wylie secondary wasn’t bad either. They forced Kason Davis into a lot of bad situations, especially in rollouts. Carthage didn’t get a third down conversion until the second half. That’s an indication of some solid coverage and solid interior line play. Credit both Bulldogs here.

The difference between winning and losing is that much.

There’s going to be a lot of talk about the Carthage interceptions, and for good reason. Let’s take some time to talk about the margin of error that we see here. These are two defenses who have been excellent in the postseason, but the difference between these two teams was in the mere inches. We went into this game expecting a very close battle, and it did not disappoint.

The difference between winning and losing in football is that much. It’s inches, millimeters at times.

Carthage absolutely came alive in the second quarter, and stayed alive throughout the second half.

Wylie got off to a hot start, picking apart Carthage for two drives. After Wylie went up 14-0 in the first quarter, they only scored 3 points.

Carthage went on a 31-3 run to end the game. It was brutal, it was efficient, and most importantly, it was hard-fought.
