Lake Travis had no problems with Buda Hays last year. This time around, it was a little different. The Rebels provided a pesky challenge but eventually pulled away for a 60-34 victory on Friday night.

Buda Hays head coach Gary Gaddy said his team was ready “to compete” and they started the game with the football. After being stopped on fourth down and one early, the Cavaliers got off to a hot start thanks to the efforts of Hudson Card, who scored two touchdowns to give Lake Travis an early 13-0 lead. The Rebels responded late in the first quarter with a Bayler Jordan touchdown reception to put Hays on the board and make it 13-7 at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, running back Thailand Mayberry would get another touchdown on the board to tie the game at 13. Matthew Baldwin, who had a big night, answered and found his go-to target in Garrett Wilson to score and put the Cavaliers back in front.

But Mayberry added another touchdown to his total from a big first half that put the Rebels in front 21-20. Lake Travis would eventually regain the lead to make it 29-21 at the break. Baldwin finished a perfect half, going 12-for-12 with four touchdown passes.

After both defenses stiffened up at the start of the third quarter, Lake Travis would add a Cameron Dicker field goal and another Garrett Wilson touchdown to make it 39-21. But as was the case for most of the night, the Rebels would simply not go away.

Quarterback Xavier Martinez would add a touchdown run of his own and throw another touchdown pass to Gentry Brawith off the heels of a Jaidon Bialaszewski interception of Baldwin to cut the deficit to 39-34.

Lake Travis was finally able to take control of the game thanks to Garrett Wilson who caught two more touchdown passes from Baldwin. Sean Brown-Nixon would cap off the scoring with a fumble recovery in the end zone with under two minutes left in the game.

Lake Travis has a bye week next week prior to their rivalry game with Austin Westlake on October 13 while Hays hosts Westlake on October 6.
