THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The visiting Lufkin Panthers stole a district win against The Woodlands College Park Cavaliers 21-3. After dropping their first game, the Panthers have been on a run of now four straight wins and move to 4-1 on the season. This was the third home game for the Cavaliers who were coming off a tough 19-13 loss at A&M Consolidated and are now 1-3 on the season. Lufkin was led Houston wide receiver commit Malik Jackson and dual threat quarterback KeWone Thomas, both who had great games.

Panthers opened with the ball, and a long kick return set them up at the one-yard line for a quick touchdown by KeWone Thomas. College Park matched with a big return of their own, but couldn’t capitalize and turned the ball over on downs. Both teams failed to get much going again until 2:24 left in the first when Thomas hit Malik Jackson for a nine-yard touchdown.

The second quarter was marred by ugly play as the Cavaliers threw a pick and couldn’t score until they hit a 41-yard field goal as the clock expired into the half. Lufkin had a player ejected for targeting, and after a strong first quarter couldn’t get much going.

Cavaliers opened the second half losing a fumble that was recovered by Lufkin Safety Darren Woodson that the Panthers couldn’t capitalize on. Later in the quarter, a promising Panther drive was stopped by a fumble in the end zone, but it didn’t matter two minutes later, Thomas hit Breylon Garcia for a 63-yard touchdown. Lufkin went into the third quarter ahead 21-3 and ran down the clock through the fourth quarter.

College Park’s defense is actually quite solid, they hit hard and forced turnovers, and held down the Panthers’ run game, but they were overmatched against a strong Lufkin wide receiver corps. Offensively, Hunnicutt had a solid first half but was just 2-9 for eight yards in the second. The Cavaliers couldn’t get much going on the ground and definitely missed Daniel Vann. They face Beaumont West Brook next week and look to turn their season around. Lufkin host The Woodlands next week in a game of one loss teams.
