The Morning After – Discussing the biggest storylines of Friday night’s Texas High School Football Playoff games

This weekend was one of the most wild ones we’ve seen yet, and that’s in no way an exaggeration. There’s no way to get to every single storyline here. There are far too many. Let’s hit the biggest ones.

Galena Park North Shore stonewalls Katy

What an effort from the Mustang defense to completely deny Katy with the game on the line. This is a Deondrick Glass-less Katy, yes, but this is still Katy, with four plays to reach paydirt from the two yard line. Four plays in a row, North Shore denied them. I do believe this cements the Mustangs as more than a threat, more than a problem, more than even a contender. I think it moves them to a favorite.

San Angelo Central – Allen was Texas High School Football atmosphere perfection

This game could have been played at the clinical, sterile, and glass monument to industry that we call AT&T Stadium. It could’ve been played at Allen’s 60 million dollar stadium. Instead, it was played at San Angelo Stadium, and it truly felt like an old-school matchup, despite the flash and flair of uniforms and the blistering offense.

Watch Adam West go full Batman on this football

This is the catch of the year, I don’t care who you are. West plucked this one out of the air like a batarang, he caught it so casually that if this was your first time watching football you might think that footballs don’t have weight. The rest of this game was a sloppy fumble-fest in the rain, but this catch was aesthetic and technical perfection.

Psycho crazy insane finishes all over the state.

Abilene fumbled while trying to run out the clock after leading DeSoto all game. DeSoto scored with less than a minute left to win.

It really looks like Munday broke the plane here against Muenster. The difference between winning and losing was literally centimeters here.

Lancaster faced a fourth and five, and hit up Omar Manning for seven to keep their game winning drive alive in what ended up being a slugfest with Wylie East.

We already talked about North Shore’s goal line stand, which was so exceptional that it deserved a post all on its own.

Atascocita beat Houston Lamar by a single point in NRG. At one point, Atascocita was down 21-7.

It’s hard to beat the same team twice. Carthage got revenge for a regular season loss to Henderson, 33-31.

Lexington kicked a last second field goal to top East Bernard, 38-35.

These are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. There were too many close finishes to count in this one.

Lake Travis and Austin Westlake set for a rematch

Both Austin area teams dominated their third round opponents, and are all set for a rematch. Let’s hope it’s more competitive than the last time these two clashed: Lake Travis romped all over the Chapparals to the tune of a 49-7 score. There’s reason to believe that stud QB Sam Ehlinger will be much more healthy for this one, but Westlake still has to find a way to slow down a dominant LT offense.

“Abilene Against The World” ended up being great

Earlier this week, I wrote something pointing out the struggles of West Texas teams when they get into the third round, and pointed out that all three Abilene schools would be heavy underdogs. Here’s how they preformed:

Abilene Cooper lost to Aledo, 56-35. The Cougars scored a lot more on Aledo than a lot of people do.

Abilene High lost to DeSoto, 49-45, and arguably would’ve won if not for a late fumble as they were running out the clock.

Abilene Wylie stomped Argyle, 35-14. Wylie is now officially a threat in 4A after a slow start to the season.

That’s not bad at all for three games where each team was favored to lose heavily.

We still have the last of the big three games left to play.

Cedar Park and Manvel clash today, and that one could come down to the wire. Stay tuned with us here, we’ll give you the updates.
