After leading the Mineola Yellowjackets to their first state championship in 2016, head coach Joe Drennon is making the jump to 5A. Drennon was officially named as the next head coach and athletic director at Hallsville on Monday night.

Drennon leaves Mineola with a 75-33 overall record, including a record of 43-6 the last three seasons. He takes over for David Plunk, who was reassigned in January after 12 seasons as the football coach and AD. Plunk finished 64-63 in his 12 years and is the winningest coach in school history. The Bobcats went 2-8 this past season and missed the playoffs.

Hallsville ISD Superintendent Jeff Collum released a statement saying, “We are very excited about our new Athletic Director and Head football coach, Joe Drennon. He is coming from a highly successful program which includes a 2016 state championship in football in Mineola, Texas. Our students and our community will benefit from Coach Drennon’s hard work, character, discipline, and championship attitude. Again, we are extremely excited about this addition to the Hallsville ISD team.”
