HOUSTON — Katy High School clawed past the Galena Park North Shore 31-3 Saturday afternoon at NRG Stadium, riding the backs of strong defensive play and offensive execution.

Despite North Shore’s highly-touted backfield, the Tigers’ defense was shut-down quality. The trio of Deondrick Glass, Josh Oglesby, and Austin Marshall did enough offensively to finish off the Mustangs offensively.

Both defenses came to play as each offense went three-and-out on their first drives of the day. Katy forced a fumble early and recovered inside the 40-yard line to give their offense a chance to put up a touchdown. Not to be outdone, North Shore’s defense held their own and forced Katy to settle for a 42-yard field goal with 4:02 left in the first quarter.

The next Katy possession proved to be a breakthrough as Austin Marshall found sophomore receiver Jordan Patrick for a nine-yard touchdown jump out to a 10-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Katy added another touchdown to their lead early in the second quarter, as Austin Marshall dumped it off to Trey Brown, who sped upfield for a 59-yard score.

“We’ve been playing well against the run all year long and we expect to do that,” Katy Head Coach Gary Joseph said. “The kid [Zach Evans] is a fine player and a fine back, but our kids played good defense and rose to the occasion.”

The Mustangs were testing star running backs Deondrick Glass and Josh Oglesby, but, loading the box had its flaws, as Austin Marshall had full freedom to sling it. The Mustang defense adjusted quickly though, and Marshall threw his first interception in the last five minutes of the half, to shift momentum in North Shore’s favor. Zachary Evans overcame an early fumble and broke off some solid runs on the ensuing possession, but they were forced to settle for a field goal. At the half, Katy was on top 17-3.

Zach Evans fumbled for the second time in the game on North Shore’s first possession of the second half. The star sophomore back was shut down by the Tiger defense and was pretty banged up by the end of the game. His elite running back counterpart, Glass, found the end zone within three plays of the turnover to extend the lead to 24-3.

Dematrius Davis hadn’t cracked all game — despite the bullying the Tigers were laying on him — but finally fell apart for him after he threw the first interception in his high school varsity career. In the first twelve minutes of the second half, Katy turned two turnovers into 14 points via Deondrick Glass and held North Shore to three important.

North Shore’s offense finally got a drive going — a little too late — as Davis overcame his interception and threw passes of 27 and 35 yards on their way to inside the 10-yard line. The Tigers will travel up to Alamo Stadium for a matchup against the winner of Lake Travis and San Antonio O’Connor game.

North Shore finished its season at 9-4.
