A former DeSoto head coach is getting back into the high school coaching ranks, this time in East Texas. Claude Mathis was officially hired on Thursday by Marshall ISD as the next head coach of the Marshall Mavericks. The move was first reported by David Smoak on Monday and confirmed by Matt Stepp on Thursday.

Mathis replaces Clint Harper, who was hired by Duncanville ISD as their new athletic director last month. Harper went 27-20 in four seasons with the Mavericks and made the playoffs each season.

Mathis was an assistant coach at SMU, serving as the running backs coach and the director of high school relations. Prior to the SMU job, Mathis was the head coach at DeSoto from 2008 through 2014. In his seven seasons with the Eagles, Mathis compiled a 74-18 record and led the team to trips to the state semifinals in 2012 and 2013. He’s also had head coaching stops at Austin Anderson, Somerville and Austin LBJ.

The Mavericks finished 6-5 in 2016 and lost in the bi-district round to Wylie East in the Class 5A Division II playoffs.
