On a warm Friday night in Kansas City, Chiefs fans got to see their future under center for the very first time. Former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes made his debut for the Chiefs and he did not disappoint.

On his first play from scrimmage, Mahomes put his strong right arm on full display, completing a 40-yard pass to Demarcus Robinson down the sideline.

The play was negated due to a holding call but that wasn’t all the former Whitehouse High School star had to offer.

In the third quarter, Mahomes threw his first touchdown pass of the preseason on a one-yard scramble to Marcus Kemp. The Chiefs would go on to win the game 27-17.

Mahomes finished 7 for 9 for 49 yards and the touchdown pass but it was a promising start for the electrifying quarterback. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid liked what he saw from his rookie quarterback, telling the Kansas City Star, “He made some nice reads, nice throws. Started off like gangbusters, even though we got it called back.”

There is still going to be a long learning curve with Mahomes as he transition from the high-flying Red Raider offense to a more conventional pro-style offense. That said, there is definitely some promise and at Arrowhead Stadium, everyone got just a glimpse of what could be there.
