Picks

Sweetwater – 0

West Orange-Stark – IIII

Advantage

West Orange – Stark, four votes to none

Reasoning

Sweetwater is a great team that’s having a great season. They have some excellent wins, particularly over Krum and Gilmer in the playoffs. They’re on a historic run, and they’re back in the state championship game for the first time since the ’80s.

With all that being said, we feel like West Orange-Stark is on another level, and has been all year.

When we say defenses are good, we often mean that they hold opposing teams to around 21 points per game. When we say they’re great, we say that they hold teams to around 7-14 points per game. West Orange-Stark will finish this year with more shutouts than games in which they allowed points. The Mustangs have blanked opponents nine times this year, and no one scored on them until November the 30th. Only two teams have scored in the double digits on WO-S this year.

It’s not that it’s just their defense either. The lowest point total the Mustangs have scored this year is 32. The highest? 73, scored in a 73-0 blowout win that came in the playoffs.

Sweetwater is a great team, and it’s a bummer that they had to draw the best pound-for-pound team in the state. We don’t deal in hyperbole here, and we like to give the benefit of the doubt to the underdog. We don’t fire off hot takes, and we definitely shy away from guarantees. With that being said, out of all the games that will be played this weekend, this one is the most likely to be a blowout. We like West Orange-Stark to complete one of the best seasons of all time.
