Picks

DeSoto – II

Cibolo Steele – II

Advantage

Push

Reasoning

DeSoto is talented, there’s no disputing that. The Eagles have stars at nearly every position, from Shawn Robinson at quarterback to KD Nixon at wide receiver to Kemonte Yow at MLB/DE, the Eagles are stacked with talent.

It’s not just talent that makes them a good team either, the Eagles play unified, something you often don’t see from a team of blue-chips. Their defense is excellent, their pass protection and run blocking is awesome on a team level, and Shawn Robinson makes great decisions with the football.

DeSoto thrives on spreading the field and getting the ball to their playmakers in space and letting them beat you. This isn’t a bad approach at all, it’s been extremely effective, and you can argue that if DeSoto hadn’t faced Allen in recent years they would’ve won more titles than they have.

If DeSoto likes to spread the field, then Cibolo Steele likes to do the opposite: they like to make the field as small as possible, then beat the tar out of you on that small field. Their running game is bruising, their defense is hard-hitting. Steele is not merely a physical team, but everything about them does stem from how physical they are.

The Knights aren’t without talent. Xavier Martin is an excellent player at quarterback, they have a very good secondary, and two backs that can lay the wood in Travell Lumpkin and Brenden Brady.

DeSoto gets all the press clippings, but Steele just plays a physical brand of football. Both styles have merit, and we think that this clash of disciplines will make for one of the best state championship games this weekend.
