After two weeks and thousands of votes, we’re excited to announce our “Best of the Year”, as chosen by the fans.

Best Regular Season Game

Our winner for Best Regular Season Game was a double overtime bout between a state finalist and a state champion, Cibolo Steele vs. Lake Travis. The final score stood 59-56 in favor of Lake Travis, Charlie Brewer threw for 400 yards, and Xavier Martin had 221 yards running and throwing in the first half alone. The explosive Week 2 bout is a sure instant classic.

Best Playoff Game

There’s no shocker here in the voting, the shock came in the final from the game itself. Manvel came into a bout with Temple the odds on favorite to win a 5A title. The game itself was nothing short of incredible, and when the report on this game came in, everyone on our staff was nothing short of shocked and amazed. The game jump-started an amazing run by Temple to the state finals.

Best State Title Game

The defensive battle between Highland Park and Temple was nothing short of a clinic on stopping offenses, as both sides struggled to find the end zone all day. In the end, Highland Park came out on top in a game that made hardcore football fans across the state very happy.

Coach Of The Year

Carthage’s Scott Surratt came out on top in the voting for Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to a 13-2 record and a comeback win over Abilene Wylie in the title game. The Bulldogs were a playoff force, defeating China Spring in a triple overtime game in the semifinals, and blocked a field goal against Stafford to secure a win the week before.

Offensive Player Of The Year

He grabbed headlines all year for the DeSoto Eagles, and it’s no surprise that he snagged this honor as well: Shawn Robinson is our Offensive Player of the Year. Robinson was instrumental in leading the Eagles to their first state title in their storied history.

Defensive Player Of The Year

When Anthony Hines III hits you, you feel it. There’s no doubt that the star linebacker from Plano East was one of the best, if not the best defenders in the state over the past year.

Special Teams Player Of The Year

Flower Mound’s Western Michigan bound Josh Grant snagged the vote for Special Teams Player Of The Year after his stellar year with the Jaguars. He’s got the range to be an excellent kicker, and was clutch for the Jaguars in 2016.
