The big headline in Class 2A Division II Regions I & II is the reappearance of Clarksville and Canadian back into the 2A level after moving up from 1A Division I. Canadian and Clarksville both have enjoyed a solid amount of success over the last few years and they will get to test their luck in 2A once again. The Canadian Wildcats over the last five seasons have won a mind blowing 87 percent of their games in the last five seasons. The only two programs that come close to that number is Region I's top ranked team, the Cisco Loboes. The race in Region II with Clarksville, Mildred, Holliday, Whitewright and Nocona is wide open and it could prove to be anyone's region to reign supreme by the end of the season.
Looking at the schedule, one of the big match ups that looms large for the region includes Region I favorite Cisco travelling to one of Class 1A's big powers in Stamford. The big individual one on one battle in that match up is between Cisco LB Mason Reed and Stamford QB Hagen Hutchinson could be one of the marquee things to watch over the course of the season. If a district match up is more appetitizing, Nocona and Holliday will do battle in Week 8. The Nocona Indians are coming off a 6-6 2011 campaign and could be slated to have an even bigger season in 2012 with 16 total returning starters.
Class 2A Division II Regions I & II are filled with promising players on both sides of the ball. Look no further than in Whitewright with the national spotlight shining on quarterback Tyrone Swoopes. Throwing for almost 1,400 yards and rushing for almost 2,300 more yards in 2011, the Tigers quarterback has the chance to lead Whitewright to yet another deep playoff run. Mildred will carry its deep round playoff hopes on Iowa commit Nic Shimonek. Expect a big season from Tate Fenoglio of Nocona and Boston Hudson of Canadian out of the running game.
On the defensive side, looking at how Clarksville adjusts to the 2A level with Stephen McPeters at defensive end and
Kelton Scales at defensive back will be the big question mark and thing to watch. One of the more underrated players in the Class 2A Division II could be Como-Pickton DB Hank Tullis. If Como-Pickton end up back in the playoffs in 2012, Tullis will be a major reason why. Other players to watch could be Canadian's Andrew Ezzell and Quile Wady of Cooper. |
