Four downs: Second half rally falls short for Baylor at Kansas State

Miscues Cost Bears Big

The first half was just plain ugly for the Bears. The offense couldn’t get anything going, Jesse Ertz and the Kansas State Wildcats ran up and down the defense in the first half and the offense couldn’t take advantage of a Wildcat fumble that ended in a blocked field goal.

The Bears looked much better in the second half but the Bears can point to two plays that effectively ended their chances: a high snap on third and one in the third quarter with Baylor within a score, a Connor Martin fumbled snap on a punt that effectively ended the Bears chances. It was another solid effort but one that went by the wayside after a few costly mistakes.

John Lovett Provides The First Spark

For the majority of the game, the Baylor Bears struggled to run the football against a tough physical Kansas State front line. Terence Williams finished with 27 yards and the offensive line struggled up front in the afternoon.

Enter John Lovett.

The true freshman from Burlington, New Jersey burst through the line and outran the Wildcats defense for a 74-yard touchdown run that sparked the offense in a strong second half for Baylor. It ultimately wasn’t enough but it was another sign o

Denzel Mims Continues To Shine

What a discovery that the former Daingerfield has been this season. After a breakout performance last week against No. 3 Oklahoma, the sophomore followed it up with another good performance that included a 70-yard catch and run for a touchdown from Zach Smith.

Mims has quickly become a top target with over 400 yards already through the first five games of the season. The Bears have their go-to receiver moving forward, especially with Chris Platt out for the season.

Baylor Does Not Go Away Easily

Say this about the Bears. They have been in every game this season. Their largest deficit has been seven points entering the fourth quarter and head coach Matt Rhule has his team playing hard. The second half was the polar opposite from a rough first half.

Moving forward, the Bears will be a tough out the rest of the way, even if the record doesn’t reflect that.
