State Powerhouses Showing Out On Day 1 Of 7on7

By Dean Bisceglia

No big surprises from the big names on day 1, they just keep on beating everyone. All the teams that made it to their respective state title game last December, and qualified for the 7on7 tournament advanced past day one to the championship bracket.

The 3A-D1 champion from this past year looks like they are picking up where they left off. Brock beat everyone in their pool by at least 2 scores today, and averaged over 33 points in their 3 games. Brock finished their day off with a, 41-12, blowout win against Rockport. Brock will take on Springtown in their opening matchup in the “win or go home” championship bracket.

The 3A-D1 runner-up is on the other side of the D2 championship bracket looking to get some revenge with Brock. Although Cameron Yoe didn’t win all their games like Brock did they were just as impressive in their wins. Yoe averaged 41 points in their three games. They finished their day by blowing out Springtown, the other team that made it out of Pool L. The Yoemen will take on Giddings in their first game tomorrow morning.

Argyle may have the most work to do tomorrow. The 4A-D1 runner-up last December looked like the least impressive out of the finalists, but they did what they needed to do to advance. Averaging 25 points and giving up 20 points a game isn’t leaving much room for error. The Eagles will take on Pool O winner Stephenville.

Celina lost their starting Senior QB Conner Pingleton on the opening drive of the state game against West Orange-Stark with a broken wrist, but look out if Pingleton goes down this season. The Bobcats look to be in good hands with Sophomore QB Travis Radtke. Radtke led the Bobcats to the top of Pool F while averaging 35 points per game. Radkte is getting his shot to prove himself this tournament, because Pingleton is dealing with a back injury trying to get ready for the start of the season in a month.  The Bobcats will take on Pool N second place finisher La Feria.

Last years Division II winner, Navasota failed to make it out of pool play and will be in the consolation bracket this year. The Division 2 championship game will be played at 3 pm, and there will be a new champion crowned.
