Former Converse Judson star defensive end Alton Robinson has signed with Syracuse and will suit up for the Orange for the 2017 season, according to a report from the Associated Press.

The news comes just over a month after the Las Cruces Sun-News reported that Robinson, who spent the 2016 season at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, had committed to New Mexico State. Such a move would provide Robinson with a second chance at Division I football after the former three-star Texas A&M signee wasn’t able to enroll in College Station after being charged with felony burglary just weeks after National Signing Day in 2016.

The charges have since been reduced to a misdemeanor, which opened up the door for Robinson to commit to New Mexico State, although he elected to evaluate his options and ultimately signed with Syracuse.

According to a release from the school, Syracuse conducted its own review of the the circumstances surrounding Robinson, with the finding producing ‘positive feedback.’

“We have conducted a thorough and comprehensive review of Alton’s background and have received nothing but positive feedback from all who know him, including educators, academic leaders and coaches,” Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack said. “Alton has shown deep regret and remorse for his actions and has grown as a result of the support he’s had from his family, friends and coaches.”

Robinson is now listed on Syracuse’s active roster and with the Orange needing to fill the void Josh Allen left on the defensive line, Robinson is a viable candidate for immediate playing time.

As a freshman at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Robinson tallied 67 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 14 sacks, dominating in the kind of fashion that garnered Robinson high-major interest as a recruit.

Robinson will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
