TCU’s Recruiting Haul Looking Good Heading Into National Signing Day

TCU has made a late push on the recruiting front in the last several weeks, taking advantage of a few unexpected slots opening up on their roster to go after some top flight talent nationwide. The Frogs currently have 11 commits, including JUCO linebacker Alex Bush, who has signed his NLI.

The Frogs’ highest rated recruit is QB Shawn Robinson (DeSoto), the highest rated player ever at that position to sign with TCU. Enrolling later this month, Robinson is likely to compete for snaps this spring, and could push Kenny Hill (Southlake) for the starting job in the fall. Joining Robinson on offense is four star receiver Omar Manning (Lancaster), one of the best in the state – though he is being heavily pursued by other programs, including Texas. Kenedy Snell and Jalen Reagor, teammates out of Waxahachie, are a pair of speedsters who can be immediate contributors as receivers in TCU’s high-flying offense. The offensive line picks up a four star commit as well in Aledo’s Wes Harris, who has been one of the best recruiters for the program since giving his verbal back in May of 2015.

TCU has offers out to several offensive linemen, notably Eleasah Anderson out of Taylor High School in Houston, who has put the Frogs in the lead for his services. It won’t be surprising if Patterson and co continue to mine the JUCO ranks for some immediate help in the trenches, as the unit was inconsistent and 2016 and could use an injection of size and experience.

Defensively, it’s an intriguing group for Coach Patterson, with athletes like Lakendrick Van Zandt committed and Trestan Ebner still a possibility, though he decommitted last month. The teammates from Henderson announced together, but Ebner’s desire to play offense has given him pause, and it appears he will decide between Baylor and TCU closer to signing day, with Texas potentially in the mix as well. The secondary could be the biggest beneficiary of the Class of 2017; with so many returning players entering their junior and senior seasons next fall, it’s crucial that Patterson restock now. Flipping corner Noah Daniels (Clear Creek) from Baylor was a big get, as the speedy cover guy can compete against the fast wide receivers that litter the Big 12. Daniels will take an official visit to Utah later this month, and was recently offered by Notre Dame, so Frog fans should keep an eye of him over these next few weeks. Garret Wallow, a hard hitting safety out of Louisiana is a name to watch; at 6’2” and 200 pounds, he reminds some of linebacker Ty Summers, and could easily transition to that position at the next level.

The Frogs are searching far and wide for size along the defensive line recently, pursuing a trio of JUCO tackles in Californian Kamilo Tongamoa, Josh Curry out of Arizona, and Fua Leilua from Utah. All tip the scales at over 300 pounds, bringing truth to Patterson’s statements at the end of the season that his team needed to get much bigger in the trenches.
With only eleven committed players, and slots for 18-20 in the signing class, Patterson and co have some work to do before February 1st. The coaching staff will continue to look for players that have Frog Factor as they host several big names in the coming weeks for official visits.
