The Texans pulled a solid good-guy move yesterday by re-signing Andre Johnson to a one day contract so that he can retire as a Texan.

Johnson was a national champion in college with the Miami Hurricanes in addition to being a Parade All-American in high school. He was taken third overall by the Texans in the 2003 NFL Draft, and spent 12 seasons with the franchise. While a Texan, he eclipsed the 1,000 yard receiving mark in seven of his 12 seasons. He was also a seven time Pro Bowler, and lead the NFL in receiving yards in 2008 and 2009. He also infamously fought Cortland Finnegan during a game in 2010. Both Johnson and Finnegan were ejected, but not suspended.
Johnson regressed in his later years after a series of injuries hampered his production with the Texans, and he left the franchise in 2015. He spent two more years in the NFL, one with the Colts and one with the Titans, before retiring in 2016.
This one day contract will allow Johnson to retire as a Texan.
There’s no real doubt in anyone’s mind that Johnson is the most successful player in the Texans’ short history. He was a bright spot when the team was down and a huge contributor when they were good. He seemingly caught lots of passes no matter who the quarterback was, and the Texans have had some quarterbacks that really struggled.
