LAWRENCE, Kansas- Texas Tech rebounded nicely from a loss to Oklahoma State last week by defeating Kansas 65-19 on Saturday. It was Texas Tech’s first Big 12 win, and they now sit at 4-1 overall on the season.

In years past against Kansas – especially on the road for an 11 a.m. kickoff — the Red Raiders were notorious for starting slow against the Jayhawks. This year that wasn’t the case.

Texas Tech got off to a hot start, scoring on each of their first three drives. Justin Stockton punched in the first score of the day from 12 yards out. After a defensive stop, running back Desmond Nisby took a carry 47 yards to the house to open up a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Quarterback Nic Shimonek got in on the scoring action shortly after. He escaped pressure in the pocket and hit receiver Quan Shorts on the move to his left for a 37-yard touchdown. After that, there was pretty much no looking back for the Red Raiders.

A botched punt later in the first quarter have Kansas great field position, and they capitalized to cut the lead to 21-7.

Tech linebacker intercepted a pass and returned it deep into Kansas territory, setting up another score for Desmond Nisby and the Red Raider offense. By halftime, the score was 35-10.

However, Kansas made it a tad bit interesting late in the third quarter. Coming out of halftime, the Jayhawks were able to slow down the Tech offense and scored 9 unanswered points on a field goal and a touchdown with a failed extra point, making it 35-19 with 5:49 left in the third quarter.

But after that stretch, Tech closed out strong. The Red Raider defense forced another crucial turnover, as nickeback Justus Parker returned a forced fumble for a touchdown to extend the Tech lead to 42-19.

Minutes later, Parker took advantage of a ripped pass and intercepted Kansas, giving Tech the ball back. The offense didn’t hesitate to capitalize, going just two plays for 60 yards and another touchdown, resulting in a score of 48-19 at the end of the third quarter.

From that point, Texas Tech put in their backups and extended the lead to 65-19 before the clock hit all zeros. The Red Raiders will now prepare for a road trip to Morgantown as they take on West Virginia at 11 a.m. next Saturday.
