Starting today, TexasHSFootball.com will rank the Top 10 quarterbacks from the Lone Star State. We begin with the No. 10 gunslinger, Austin Westlake’s Sam Ehlinger.
Ehlinger comes from what the local paper, the Austin American-Statesman, calls a quarterback factory. Current NFL signal callers Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints and Nick Foles of the St. Louis Rams graduated from Westlake.
As a sophomore, Ehlinger’s head coach Todd Dodge — former Southlake Carroll head coach and four-time Class 5A state champion — believed the inexperienced Ehlinger deserved to start for the Chaparrals.
The 6-foot-1, 207 pounder sustained a few injuries throughout the season, only playing half the regular season. Ehlinger suffered a mild concussion and an ankle injury in early October. Both injuries plagued him, but he still managed to play well with just a small sample size of games.
Ehlinger threw for 2,300 yards, tossed 24 touchdowns, rushed for nine scores and recorded only one interception.
“He’s mature beyond his years,” Dodge told KVUE of Austin regarding his young quarterback. “He has a natural leadership ability, and you can tell as a young player that he isn’t afraid to get in there and say the right things — both positively and [if he] has to get on somebody’s tail a little bit, he’ll do that also.”
Ehlinger’s work he’s put in the offseason hasn’t gone unnoticed.
So far Ehlinger has received offers from Houston and SMU, and with the commitments of fellow Class of 2017 quarterbacks — Denton Guyer’s Shawn Robinson (TCU), San Antonio Reagan’s Kellen Mond (Baylor) and Mesquite Horn’s Chris Robison (Oklahoma) — his stock will surely rise if he can stay healthy next season.
