Teams from this area provided lots of entertainment in the opening week; blowouts, nailbiters, the works. Here are some of the top games from Texoma in week two:

Wichita Falls Rider (0-1) @ Lubbock Coronado (1-0) (9/8)- Lowery Field

Despite taking advantage of a miscue at the opening kickoff, Rider was dealt a 35-14 loss at the hands of Mansfield Legacy in the season opener. Jorge Vargas completed 12 passes for 123 yards and Rider’s first touchdown of the game; Brandon Bolton rushed for 104 yards and the Raiders only other score in the contest.

Qua Gray was stellar in Coronado’s 56-14 season opening romp of Plainview; the senior quarterback completed 17 passes for a whopping 367 yards and five touchdowns. Blair Conwright and Devin Morrison each caught a pair of touchdown passes, and finished the night with 133 and 137 receiving yards respectively.

Last Result: Lubbock Coronado 54, Wichita Falls Rider 47 (2016)

Graham (1-0) @ Brownwood (1-0) (9/8) Gordon Wood Stadium

The Steers and Lions play one of the more exciting rivalry matches in Texas, this season being the third time in five years the two teams enter with a 1-0 record. Graham avenged the 2016 season opening loss to Sanger, topping the Indians 55-14 this time around. Contributions were witnessed everywhere for the Steers: Tucker Horn completed 19 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns, three of those to Adam Groves to go along with 159 yards receiving. Chase Gilmore tallied 159 yards on the ground, as well as three touchdown runs.

Brownwood gained control of their contest against Canyon early, rattling off 32 consecutive points to lead 46-13 at the half, and ultimately throttle the competition 60-20. Tommy Bowden contributed to four touchdowns, three in the air and one on the ground. Bowden was deadly efficient, completing only eight passes, but for 193 yards and the three scores. Brownwood scored four touchdowns on the ground with four different rushers, not on this list is Gavin Jefferson, but he did contribute 115 yards rushing and caught a 66 yard touchdown pass from Bowden.

Last Result: Brownwood 34, Graham 30 (2016)

Bowie (0-1) vs. Howe (0-1) (9/8) Jackrabbit Stadium

Bowie received a punch in the gut early on against Aubrey, as a 52 yard run and a 59 yard pass put the Jackrabbits in a 14-0 hole in the first quarter; it didn’t get much better as the Chaparrals ran away with a 44-0 win. Aubrey’s defense was tough as well, holding Bowie to only 83 yards rushing and 59 yards passing.

Howe took on defending state champs Gunter in the season opener, but was unable to stop the Tigers 16 game win streak, dropping the contest 50-12. A pair of rushing touchdowns by Dylan Moreau and Mason Riggs in the fourth quarter prevented the game from becoming a shutout.

Last Result: Howe 38, Bowie 13 (2016)

Jacksboro (1-0) vs. Windthorst (0-1) (9/8) Jacksboro ISD Stadium

Jacksboro dominated their season opener with a 61-0 drubbing of Olney. 12 different players took rushing plays for the Tigers, with seven reaching paydirt. Hunter Hackley, Alexis Rodriguez and Bryadon Pewitt each scored a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Windthorst looks to have a quality team in 2017, but was challenged heavily by Henrietta in the season opener, eventually taking a rough 42-32 loss. Koy Pennartz led all rushers in the game with 179 yards rushing, and recorded a pair of touchdowns. The silver lining of this defeat: Windthorst moved the ball very well against a larger school, tallying a total of 531 yards of offense.

Last Result: Jacksboro 21, Windthorst 14 (2016)

Wichita Falls Notre Dame (0-1) vs. Bryson (0-1) (9/8) Father Abstetar Field

Notre Dame and Bryson look to be solid this season, but both endured tough season opening losses. Notre Dame fell 69-44 to Forestburg last week despite the performance of Jack Trivette, who hauled in three catches for touchdowns. Jacob Ysasaga also tallied a pair of scores on the ground.

Bryson stormed back late in their contest against Milford, scoring 20 consecutive points in the fourth quarter; however a missed PAT in the remaining minutes was the decider, with Milford taking the 51-50 win. Brayden Houser completed 12 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns in the game.

Last Result: Bryson 69, Wichita Falls Notre Dame 24 (2016)

Crowell (1-0) vs. Gordon (1-0) (9/8) Longhorn Stadium

Gordon’s match against Newcastle last week came down to the wire, but the Longhorns got the upper hand in the end, claiming a 44-38 win. Leading the way was Edgar Rodea, who rushed for 127 yards and a pair of scores. Brandon Mahan completed five passes for 40 yards and a touchdown as well.

Crowell’s season opener against Motley County was also a close contest, but the Wildcats prevailed in the end with a 63-50 win.

Last Meeting: Crowell 70, Gordon 36 (2016)

Forestburg (1-0) vs. Strawn (1-0) (9/8) Longhorn Field

Strawn took on a tough Abbott team last week, but was in control of the game the whole way, defeating the Panthers 66-20. The game began with a 16-0 lead for Strawn before allowing a touchdown midway through the opening quarter. Paxton Miller scored a pair of touchdowns for the Greyhounds in the game.

The debut for Forestburg head coach Tommy Tritz was a spectacular one, with the Longhorns topping Wichita Falls Notre Dame 69-44.

Last Result: Strawn 62, Forestburg 14 (2016)

Newcastle (0-1) @ Guthrie (0-1) (9/8) Jack Huey Field

Newcastle was on the losing side of the aforementioned 44-38 final against Gordon last week, with turnovers being partly to blame: An interception and two fumbles recovered by Gordon ultimately spelled the Bobcats demise. Lance Brice rushed for a pair of touchdowns with 63 yards, while J.T. Spurlin recorded 98 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Nazareth’s potent offense was too much for Guthrie, as the Jaguars suffered a 62-13 loss at the Jaybird Classic in Jayton to open the season.

Last Result: Guthrie 50, Newcastle 30 (2016)
